Customer ClassLoader:  keeping JWS from loading jars

I really like the ability of JWS to be able to download jars required for my application to run, but there are several jars that I need the ability to load up via a custom ClassLoader. But because JWS includes all of these jars in the classpath upon application start, the system class loader will take the first class it can find. Because I need to load classes from these jars based upon something a user selects, I need to have control over the codesource for these classes. Does anyone have any ideas on how to tackle this problem? Not include the jars in the jnlp and then download if not cached locally, if that's the case what's the best way to do that? Include in jnlp and be able to load with custom classloader(I dont think this will work)? Any ideas on this would greatly be appreciated.

Easiest solution to your problem and still being able to use the update mechanism of JWS is to include your JAR-file in another JAR-file that JWS loads, and then write up your own classloader, which tries to fetch your JAR-file from the downloaded JAR-file (if JWS already downloaded it, otherwise JWS will download it).
The contents of the jws-stub.jar would be something
of the following ;).
jws-stub.jar
--> myjar1.jar
--> myjar2.jar
org.myjar.MyJarClassloader
Then based on your user selecting something you
can decide which JAR-file you want to load, and thus
which class.
Hope this helped,
Manfred.

  • Secondary internal disk .. how do I keep it from loading?

    I have a secondary internal disk in my G5 Power PC. It was my original disk that I use now as an emergency and spare. It still contains all of the software so it is bootable. It loads with every startup. I have to eject it, as it causes too much heat internally. My tech suggested "pulling the plug" but I'd rather not. I want to have it NOT load at startup, as besides the heat issue, it also starts loading fonts into Extensis, and when I eject the disk, Extensis winds up crashing the computer at some point. I now have to stop Extensis from loading, eject the hard drive, and then start Extensis up again. I know it sounds trivial, but it's a pain.

    The location and condition and terms of use are strange and difficult.

    I'm running Windows 7 OS and had the same issue. I solved my problem by going to the Spotify icon (Shortcut) and right click and go to the bottom were is says properties.Click on properties then click on "open file location". Find a folder that says Users.Click and open Users folder. You sould see a folder that is your username. (xxxx-user). Click and open that folder. Find the file that says "pref". Click to open and you should get a pop-up that says, "choose the program you want to use to open this file". Make sure the check box on the lower left says, "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is unchecked (It already may be greyed out).Click on WordPad and you should see: ps.publish-playlist=0 and ps.publish-activity=0. Make both a number 3 and click save. Hopefully this will help.

    Hi,
    So it is not in this List ?
    You don't leave the app Open when you Shut down and have this box ticked ?
    AND you have other accounts Enabled so that you see the lower half of this pane ?
    If you only have the iMessages Account Enabled and not the Bonjour one you will not see this and not be able to set the "When I Quit...." setting.
    Whilst for AIM and Jabber and Yahoo Accounts this stop notifications as well it does not for iMessages.
    However I do find even though I get Dock Badge notifications It does not Start the app up.

  • How can I stop Firefox from loading automatically when I startup my computer?

    A while ago I setup Windows so Outlook and Firefox opened automatically when I log on. Now I want to stop FF from opening automatically. I have gone into the Startup folder and removed the shortcut to FF several times but it keeps coming back. I changed the name of Mozilla Firefox in the Windows Programs Directory to xxMozilla Firefox and that didn't keep it from loading. If necessary, I will remove FF from my computer altogether but I would rather not do that.

    Aaarg! I tried Matt's suggestion of using msconfig, restarted my computer, and it seemed to solve the problem. Today when I turned on the computer it hung up before loading Windows. I had to use the F12 button to get it to load. I did and it did and Firefox did not load.
    Now, this evening, I turned on the computer, the startup procedure was normal, and there's Firefox fired up and ready to go!

  • Replacing JAR files loaded by custom ClassLoader

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create an auto-updater for a stand alone application, which can look for new versions of relevant jar files on the internet and download them. I have code which will look for newly downloaded versions and can replace the old jar file with the new one (using simple File methods). This works fine for when the application is started initially, but as the application is a server and may not manually be started for a long time, I am trying to force the server to restart and reload with the new code.
    if(newCode.exists()) {
         System.out.println("new code!");
         if(oldCode.exists()) {
              oldCode.delete();
         if(code.exists()) {
              if(! code.renameTo(oldCode)) {
                        throw new IOException("Error backing up code file");
         if(! newCode.renameTo(code)) {
              throw new IOException("Error installing new code file");
    }I have looked around the forums a bit, and have come up with using a ClassLoader based on URLClassLoader:
    class ProxyLoader extends URLClassLoader
         public ProxyLoader(String jarFile) throws MalformedURLException {
              super(new URL[] { (new File(jarFile)).toURL() });
         public Class findClass(String name) throws ClassNotFoundException {
              System.out.println("Finding: " + name);
              return super.findClass(name);
    }This seems to work OK, as all the classes from the jar file are loaded by this classloader.
    I have a method which can create an instance of the class loader, and load the server application.
    private boolean startProxy(int port) {
         try {
              pl = new ProxyLoader("proxy.jar");
              Class ptClass = pl.loadClass("proxy.POPThread");
              pt = ptClass.newInstance();
              Method ptStart = ptClass.getMethod("start", new Class[0]);
              ptStart.invoke(pt, new Object[0]);
              return true;
         } catch(Exception e) {
              return false;
    }I also have a method to shut down the server:
    private boolean stopProxy() {
         try {
              Class ptClass = pl.loadClass("proxy.POPThread");
              Method ptInterrupt = ptClass.getMethod("interrupt", new Class[0]);
              ptInterrupt.invoke(pt, new Object[0]);
              return true;
         } catch(Exception e) {
              return false;
    }These appear to be working fine, the problem I have however is when I try to rename the existing jar file (proxy.jar) in order to replace it with a new one (proxy.new), the renameTo method on the File object fails. I am guessing that is because the proxy.jar file is still in use by the JVM. I have tried setting the classloader var to null, but this doesnt seem to have any effect.
    My main question is how can I 'free' the jar file so that it can be replaced with new code? Is it possible? My only otherway of working around this is to have a variable stored in a file pointing at the 'current' code, but the jar file isn't litterally replaced.
    This is a standalone application, which will probably run in a startup script on a server, so webstart isn't really an option.
    TIA
    iklesteve

    I have found this to be true anytime I try to use the renameTo() API to rename a file with a .jar file extension (regardless of the actual file type - i.e. it could be a text file with .jar appended and it will still fail) in the case where the class making the renameTo() call is loaded from another .jar file.
    I run the same exact code after extracting from the .jar, then the rename to the other .jar file is successful. Also, if I rename the .jar file to a ".ja" file, I can successfully rename the jar file even if the code is running with the context of another .jar file.
    Is this some kind of bogus security measure within the JVM or is it a bug?

  • Loading jar at runtime using custom classloader

    Hi,
    I'm trying to load a jar file to an application running inside weblogic at runtime.
    I followed the example that was posted at
    http://dev2dev.bea.com/cs/user/blog?file=/blog/jcscoobyrs/archive/2005/05/realworld_use_f.html
    and did the following:
    URLClassLoader loader = null;
    URL[] urls = {new URL("file:///" + "C:/Program Files/aaa/WEB-INF/lib/ImportTest3.jar")};
    ClassLoader classLoader = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader();
    ClassLoader loader = new URLClassLoader(urls, classLoader);
    Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(loader);
    Class customClass = Class.forName(className, true, loader);
    customCode = customClass.newInstance();
    Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(classLoader);
    everything works fine when I access my application once.
    But when I'm trying to do the same again, everything fails.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    When you say everything fails - can you clarify the failure? Can you paste the stacktrace? Is it a ClassNotFoundException?

    Can somebody tell me, what is going on

    Gseel is right: you try to instantiate an EJB with the BDK.
    Enterprise Java Beans are totally different from graphical/GUI beans. EJBs are thought for dealing with business logic like accessing a database, ldap directory and so on. They run on a application server (simply speaking - a java enabled webserver) and do some processing to handle user requests. Enterprise Java Beans usually don't interact directly with the user, they only do the work in the background and forward their results, which are then rendered for the user. Typically they are employed for handling web requests (a user with a browser), but they can also be used for awt/swing applications. Though - let me repeat - they don't appear visually on the screen.
    The only similarities between those two bean types are the following: they have getter/setter methods for their properties, they implement Serializeable (or a sub-interface like Externalizable, Remote) and they have a default no-argument constructor.
    If you want to run your been you need an application server (your bean is pre-packaged for the Bea Weblogic app-server). If you want to do something graphical, you'll need to search for GUI beans.

  • Loading classes from another jar file

    I've set up my jnpl file so that it references a core jar file (contains main() function). The jnlp also references another jar file (app.jar) which contains class files that I load and instantiate dynamically (using ClassLoader). The core.jar file contains a manifest that includes a reference to app.jar.
    The app works fine when I use "java -jar core.jar" from the command line.
    However, when I wrap the jars using jnlp, I always get a null pointer exception because it cannot find any class that is in the app.jar file. I've tried different strategies, such as trying to load a class file that sits on the server (in a jar file and not in a jar file), but that also fails if I use jnlp (However, it works if I use "java -jar core.jar")
    Any ideas what is going on?

  • Jar files not in WEB-INF/lib (custom ClassLoader?)

    I need to use classes in my JSP that do not come from a JAR file in the standard location. Sounds like I "simply" need to extend the ClassLoader used by the app server for loading the JSP. Is there any way of doing that?
    Example: my.jsp
    <h1>Hi</h1>
    <%
    FOO x = new FOO(); // code from a non-standard place
    ClassLoader cl = getClass().getClassLoader();
    %>
    I cannot put FOO.class into WEB-INF/lib or any of the standard places. Ideally I'd like to give the ClassLoader (cl above) a different (custom) parent ClassLoader which would know how to resolve FOO.class.
    I've poured over docs and Google and WebSphere and the Tomcat source code. Is this request of mine really so outrageous? I'm about the give up. What good are custom classloaders if one can't use them?

    You are essentially making the argument "All that Java
    needs is a URLClassLoader, and no one has any need for
    any custom ClassLoaders". (After all, that's all that
    I seem to have in a JSP context, with a list of
    hard-coded URLs into that URLClassLoader ...)
    Do a Google search on "custom ClassLoader" and you
    will find lots of reasons why people want to have
    custom ClassLoaders, such as ones that don't use any
    JAR or .class files ... which would qualify as why I
    can't put them into a certain place ...To be fair to duffymo, that is not how I read his argument. I read it as:
    "Sometimes we try to do things the hard way. If we sit back and rethink the problem, an easier solution might come about."
    I think this is a good opportunity to explain why you can not use the normal class loader heirarchy. You have no JARs and no .class files? Then where are you getting the class definitions? If you explain enough so that we might understand the problem:
    1) we might be able to come up with a solution or
    2) you might see a different approach before you are even done explaining
    #2 has happened to me more times then I can count. I sit down formulating a question for the forums, make sure I include enough detail to explain my problem. And by the time I am done I have a new (usually simpler) approach to solving the problem.
    Or you could sit and defend your first approach without providing any context and accomplish nothing. So its up to you.

  • Loading Resources from a .JAR

    I've read through this forum and searched java.sun.com and have found nothing to solve my problem, although I see many other people are having the same problem.
    I wrote a small application that needs to load a text file and images. When I just compile everything and then run it, all is well, my text file is found and my images are displayed. Now the problem is when I package everything into a .JAR file, suddenly my magic stops. Here is the directory structure
    - State.class
    FiftyStatesGame.class
    FlagPanel.class
    StatsPanel.class
    StatePanel.class
    states.txt
    /images
    /flags
    a bunch of .gif images (50 total)
    /states
    a bunch of .gif images (50 total)
    I create my archive with the following command
    jar cvf FiftyStates.jar *
    and all seems well, I've even changed the extension to .zip to ensure that the images and text file is inside the jar
    Now when I try to run the program using
    java -cp FiftyStates.jar FiftyStatesGame
    the program starts but I get a NullPointerException and my pictures don't load. :-(
    I've read in the forum about using
    URL imageURL = ClassLoader.getSystemResource(<path to image>);
    Image logo = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(imageURL);
    and I tried this and once again, it works when not in jar form, but as soon as the application is JARed, I encounter the same problems.
    Can anyone give me the answer to this crazy problem?
    and I guess I should go one step further and ask, if I want to give this program to a friend with the JRE installed on a windows machine, what command should I put in my batch file to run this program on his machine?
    javaw -cp FiftyStates.jar FiftyStatesGame
    Thanks for any help and advice

    Hi,
    Getting the image
    =================
    It seems to me you can't be too far away from resolving your problem.
    I've never actually tried to get an image from a jar file, so I'm guessing that this may not work for you, but I have unzipped a zip file contained within an executable jar.
    What I did was this:
        private ZipInputStream findInstallationFile() {
            ClassLoader classLoader;
            URL url;
            ZipInputStream zipInputStream = null;
            InputStream inputStream;
            classLoader = getClass().getClassLoader();
            url = classLoader.getResource(ZIP_RESOURCE_NAME);
            if (url != null) {
                try {
                    inputStream = url.openStream();
                    zipInputStream = new ZipInputStream(inputStream);
                } catch (IOException ioe) {
                    ioe.printStackTrace();
            } else {
                System.err.println("Failed to find resource: " + ZIP_RESOURCE_NAME);
            return zipInputStream;
        }The good thing about this is that you can see whether or not the resource was found in the jar file. If the returned URL is null, then the resource isn't there.

    ===============
    You can make it easier to run a jar file by including a manifest file. This is just a text file which should be in the META-INF directory in your jar file. The manifest file itself should be called Manifest.mf.
    The contents of the Manifest should be:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Main-Class: FiftyStatesGame
    This assumes that your main class is FiftyStatesGame which is in the default package (tut, tut!).
    Hope this helps!

  • How to load jar files from remote location

    Hi all,
    I am trying to load jar files from remote server, from a servlet which is running on OC4j.
    For doing this,First I am getting ClassLoader by using ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader() and then type casting it to URLClassLoader.
    But by doing it I am getting ClassCastException,because oc4j returns oracle.classloader.PolicyClassLoader instead of java.net.ClassLoader.
    Appreciate if anyone can tell me how to load remote jar files using oracle.classloader.PolicyClassLoader .
    Thanks
    Harish

    Hi,
    I suppose you know about this, but just in case.
    I have used jnpl to load jar files from remote location.
