Cyrillic characters in email from discussions

Hi.
I'm subscribed to a particular topic, and I've been receiving the usual emails for each new posting. These have been fine except for this one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9346909#9346909
The email didn't show the message in the usual font, but instead displayed it in Cyrillic (Russian) characters, yet as you can see, the posting is in perfectly normal English.
Anyone know what's going on?
Bob

The OP apologizes for his poor English, perhaps the original post was made in a language that uses Cyrillic characters and then translated or revised?

  • Yikes! How do I stop email from discussion group?

I've searched my settings and I can find nothing to block email from my discussion questions! This is incredible! Not only does Apple try to slip Safari onto my system but it provides no way of not receiving emails from the discussion group!
I haven't subscribed to anything and, even when following the instructions to stop the email (i.e., delete option in "My Subscriptions") I can't because no subscriptions are listed!
    Jeez!

I've got "no" check both times and have no subscriptions. The frequency options don't include "none".

I only got one dump of about 91 emails from both the iTunes-Mac and iTunes-Win but nothing since ... maybe the deluge has stopped!

    Restating my issue / question...
When I send email from this iMac, there is a string of characters assigned. The characters are all the "alpha numeric" characters on the QWERTY key board. This only occurs when email is sent from this iMac. The issue does not manifest when using any other lap top or computer.
Hence, I have ruled out the issue is a yahoo mail matter.
Again, I can access the Yahoo mail account form multiple devices and send email without unintended assignment of character strings, but when I send wmail using this iMac, the issue happens everytime.
Characters are stacked verticaly in a column. It looks as if all characters (except function keys) are included in the string.
    Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Received emails from Verizon - Pictures do not show correctly and strange characters appear in text

When I receive emails from Verizon users, embedded images do not display inline.  Each image(s) instead is displayed as a empty box with the red X boxed at the upper left.  The images are correctly displayed at the very end of the email.
Additionally, dotted capital A's appears frequently within the text as well as other extraneous characters and symbols.
Do I have an incorrect setting in Live Mail (Outlook express displays the same) or is it something Verizon is doing?  All of my other emails from different providers display properly.
Thanks in advance for any assistance which might be offered.

I have the same problem rec eiving from a friend who uses verizon. I use aol and even opened it in Internet Exporer and the same thing happened. This is a programing glitch with verizon email. I get the text in the email but the white squares with an x and no image. I have to downlod the images and open it as an attachment. The problem is you look at the image without the text which might be describing the image. Very inconvient. The person sending the emal has to enable the rich text option . I am still looking on how to do it on Verizon email but since I don't have it I am having trouble finding a solution.

  • Special characters an issue in reading email from server?

I have an email application that uses javamail 1.4.1 that grabs emails out of flat files and displays the messages on the screen. Until recently, all email was sent within the business, but now they are able to receive emails from any email provider. We've been seeing issues where parts of messages go missing, even links to attachments that don't get displayed to the screen. All of the correct information is in the flat files, but it doesn't get displayed. Does Javamail do anything to handle special characters or is there anything you think I could try to get these messages to display? It's really causing some problems!

As far as I can tell, it's not throwing any exceptions, the only ones I catch in retrieving emails are MessagingException, IOException, and IndexOutOfBoundsException, and I'm not seeing any errors in my log files. The headers are the only thing that come through correctly every time, it's always either the message or attachments that go missing. One of the messages is from a mobile phone, which could be a problem, but we've seen it from our company email addresses too. I'll see if I can get a hold of a sample message to post. In the meantime, what kinds of properties can be set? Is there a good place to look for that?
EDIT: here is a sample message (names have been changed to protect the innocent, also removed attachment encoding)

  • Cyrillic characters from MySQL not displaying correctly

I have a flash file that has a dynamic text link which is taking the data from a MySQL database.  Everything is fine when it is receiving standard characters, but when I try to use Cyrillic characters I just get ???? instead.
I've tried setting the collation to everything from windows 1251 to UTF8 (and variants).  I've also tried setting the text link to fonts ranging from Arial to Arial CYR, Verdana etc and even embedding the char sets into the file.
Nothing seems to be working - does anyone have any ideas about what I can do?
    Thanks!!

You also have to define the connection character set, so the
    data will
    be transfered correctly.

I do this by sending a
    SET NAMES 'utf8'
to the database right after establishing the connection.
    Additionally
your server has to send the correct charset parameter to the
    browser.
In PHP you can achieve this with a header() call:
    header('Content-type: text/html; charset=UTF-8');

  • How do I stop the stream of emails from the support discussions?

First of all - I'm new to the world of the Mac - which is a great world and I thank you for the solution to my question about printing Avery labels!  However, my incoming mailbox is now flooded with discussion comments and questions of every sort.  This is a very busy season. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to read through tutorials to find a solution to this dilemma!  Thanks....

You should also check to see if you are subscribed to any of the communities.
Go to the community that you are receiving the emails from and the same box called "Actions" will appear there just like it does next to the individual question.  Make sure that you are not reciveing email notifications for that community.  Probably the community  where you asked your question.  Typically that is what causes people to get 100's of email notifications. It isn't in any of the Your Stuff places, so its easy to miss and  I think that this is not included in the tutorial, either

does anybody know why im getting hundreds of emails from apple discussions after i replied a question ?

  • How to Unsubscribe from Discussion Email Notifications

This is really an addendum to the excellent tip posted by Frank Caggiano, titled Stopping emails from ASC. I tried to add this as a Comment to his tip, but apparently comments are closed (or I'm being dense, which is always a possibility ).
One of my reasons for posting, is that I had this very question but I could not find an answer searching through Apple Support Communities. My problem, in retrospect, was that I was searching using the keyword "unsubscribe," which does not appear in Frank's post (not that it should; there are many ways to describe this situation). So, I am hoping that a tip with "unsubscribe" in the title will help users who, like me, will search for information about "how to unsubscribe from discussion emails" or the like.
I encourage you to read Frank's post (clicking on the above link opens a new window) because he explains a method for addressing this problem very well, complete with nice screenshots.
To be clear, the situation addressed in this post is the one in which you keep receiving emails from Apple Support Communities Updates ([email protected]) notifying you of a new post to a discussion you are following. And, for whatever reason, e.g., you're receiving too many emails or the discussion has gone off on a tanget, you want to stop receiving those email notifications.
    I initially went to:
Your Stuff > Preferences > Email Notification Preferences,
and checked off "no" to each option. I thought that would do the trick.
    Wrong.
Unfortunately that did not work because, I finally figured out, I was in the wrong "email notifications" area. Here is the correct procedure (some repetition here from what Frank posted but, the following also includes an alternative method):
Go to: Your Stuff > Profile tab > Manage email notifications (on right, under "Actions") > Click box next to the discussion you are watching, and for which you want to stop email notifications > Click "Remove Selected Notifications"
    OR
Go to the discussion you are following (the one you are receiving emails about) > then, on the right side, under "Actions," click "Stop email notifications"
    Best Regards,
    Mark

  • Mail - Is it possible to remove an email from a discussion without deleting it?

As the question says... is it possible within Mail to remove an email from a Conversation without deleting the email? I have an email that is incorrectly being allocated to a particular conversation and I want to remove the link to the conversation but wish for the email to remain in the inbox but without being linked to the conversation.
Is this possible within Mail? If so how does one do it?
    thanks,
    Chris

Click on the arrow next to the number of emails in the conversation. That'll show you each separate email. You can create a new mailbox (call it what you want) and drag that email out of the conversation into that mailbox.

i did visited the apple store and my email worked perfectly there.... can anyone say whats wrong??

    Hi Pitas123
I am in the UK and had a similar problem. Ii eventually found the problem was due to my BT Home Hub Router.  Not sure where you live, but of you are in the UK, this might work for you.
I found this fix below on https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4604180?start=15&tstart=0
It worked for me.  If you can't link to the URL, here is the body of the text
There's an issue related to the BT homehub that is providing a hostname that is "syntactically incorrect" for several smtp server.
Here's how you can fix it.
Using your internet browser, go to the address "192.168.1.254
    - Follow instructions to reset your password if asked.
    - Then go to "Settings", then "Advanced Settings" and "home network"
You will see there all the devices that are connected or that has been connected before. It's gonna be easyer if yout computer is the only one connected.
Your computer should have a name like "unknown-xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ...
Click on this name, chose another name without any special characters, like "macbook" for exemple.
    And then click on "apply"
    - restart your computer.
    That should fix the issue.
Credit goes to vincentfromcork for providing me with the solution.
Hope it works for you.  If it does, spread the word ;-)

  • Can't send email from Yosemite

I have an iMac 21.5 inch, mid 2010, 3.06GHz Intel core i3, 4GB memory, and have just installed Yosemite 10.10. I am able to receive emails, but cannot send emails out of Mail. When I run the Mail Connection Doctor, I have a green light for the IMAP accounts, but red lights for the SMTP accounts. The SMTP accounts have the following error:
Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the account preference.
I am able to access my email via Safari, and am able to send emails that way. And with the previous Mac OS 10.6, I had no problems sending emails from Mail.
I have read the article OS X Mail: Troubleshooting sending and receiving email messages - Apple Support, but the information does not discuss Yosemite, and I am unable to find where to check out items like Network Utility.
How can I set up Mail in Yosemite to work sending emails? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

You should be able to launch Network Utility by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.

  • Mail can't send email from 123-reg accounts

    Hi all,
I've got an issue with Mac Mail can’t send email from 123-reg accounts.
I know there is a lot of articles on simular matters and some I have tried out with no luck, others are just speaking a whole other language.
Any help would be greatly recived, here's my situation below:
    Running a iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core i5 on OS X 10.8.3
I’m using 3 accounts on Macs Mail client, one is my iCloud account that is working fine and the other two are my 123-reg accounts that I use for business purposes. I’ve been working like this for a couple of years now and about 6 months ago I upgrade my operating system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
2 or 3 months ago I randomly got a problem where I was unable to send any emails from my 123-reg account, I could only receive emails. I checked my settings and they were all correct and unchanged so I attempted to delete them and recreate the account but with no such luck.
I then decided to check if it was a problem at 123-regs end and attempted to log into web mail. This worked and was able to both send and receive emails so eliminated that possibility.
I also have these accounts set up on my iPhone, so checked if there was any issues and everything was working fine. I then checked my iphone details and made sure the same was on my desktop and still no such luck.
I’ve tried out some of the articles I’ve found on here (the ones written in plain English) still no results. I’m not very IT illiterate and just wondered if anyone else has got any ideas, whether there is something specific with 123-reg accounts and Mac Mail?
    Many thanks.

    Thanks
I just had another hunt around looking at posts and discovered that it was because I recently changed to BT Infinity and they had a block on.
I didn't even think to question the ISP.

  • When I send email from iphone, mail on my mac crashes every time.

The latest in a string of issues I've had with Mountain Lion, and even more with Lion. This is the latest and most frustrating.
Eveytime I send an email from iphone or ipad, mail on my macbook pro crashes. This happens everytime!
Also, Safari is unusable as keeps crashing and hardly ever loads properly so moved to Chrome which works perfectly.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
