Data Modeler Columns Properties

When I validate my relationel design the tool warns me that all columns have undefined security properties.
That is correct, but I cannot configure the security properties in a general way ie default values for all columns it seems. Do I really have to configure this for each column in order to get rid of the warnings?
The tool Help is not of must help here, since a search for the term "security" does not give any hit in the Help. All security properties are seem undocumented in Data Modeler

The idea is to not have default setting for security properties. You can change them in table dialog (columns page).

• SQL Datamodeler: Relational model: column properties: formula description

Hello
When I navigate to the column properties of a formula column I can add a formula description.
This formula description is not picked up by the DDL generator (Oracle).
What am I missing?
Regards Erik

Hi Erik,
if you put something there it will appear on diagram instead of data type (for good or bad). There will be more usage when support for virtual columns in Oracle 11g is implemented.

• Auto created FK columns in data modeler

Newbie to sql data modeler and have this question.
When created a relational model, it automatically generated many extra columns for Foreign Keys with notion of (1,2,..) Is there a setting to disable it. I like to have the generated DDL not to include these extra columns . Thanks.

Hi,
you can create foreign keys in two ways:
1) using table dialog - no new FK columns are generated
2) using "New FK Relation" tool - new FK columns are created automatically; However you can tune the process to your preferences:
- "General Options>General" page - select "Show properties dialog on new object" - as result FK dialog will appear when new FK is created;
- "General Options>Model>Relational" - select "Delete generated FK columns" - auto generated FK columns are here to help - you always have to define FK columns as part of FK definition (no functional FKs in current release) - you can replace these columns with existing columns and auto generated FK columns will be removed automatically (this cause only auto generated columns).
At the end you can find that auto generated columns are not that bad.

• 4.0 EA1 - Data Modeler does not show columns data types correctly

Data Modeler shows all columns data types as 'unknown'.

Hi,
you need to check "system data types" directory and it contents. Its default location in SQL Developer is sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\extensions\oracle.datamodeler\types
Check "Preferences>Data Modeler>Default system data types directory" setting. If it's empty then copy defaultdomains.xml from previous installation to directory above.
If it's not empty then you need to copy types.xml and defaultRDBMSSites.xml from default location to directory set as "Default system data types directory".

• Unable to see columns of Data Model in Template Builder for Word.

Experts,
My customer has defined Data Model,
and when Ct is trying to insert fields into their documents,
the columns in the Data Model can't been seen in Template Builder for Word.
(in tool bar; Oracle BI Publisher > Insert > Field)
The details is as follow;
(Data Model)
Name : TEST
Type : SQL Query
SQL Query : select case_id,case_name from TEST where case_id = :p_case_id and serious_flag = 'Y';
'p_case_id' is taken from LOV.
(sample data in TEST table)
CASE_ID CASE_NAME SERIOUS_FLAG
1 case1
2 case2 N
3 case3 Y
In this case, CASE_ID and CASE_NAME can't be seen in Template Builder.
But we can see the columns when the sample data is as follow;
CASE_ID CASE_NAME SERIOUS_FLAG
1 case1 Y <-(*)
2 case2 N
3 case3 Y
I mean, the data of the first row (in this case, case_id=1) is hit by the SQL query,
we can see the columns in Template Builder.
I'd like to know whether it is an intended behavior.
Regards.

Hi,
I reformed the sample data in TEST table.
In this case, the columns in the Data Model can't been seen in Template Builder for Word.
CASE_ID CASE_NAME SERIOUS_FLAG
1 case1
2 case2 N
3 case3 Y
But we can see the columns when the sample data is as follow;
CASE_ID CASE_NAME SERIOUS_FLAG
1     case1     Y     <=(*)
2 case2 N
3 case3 Y
In fact, when the data of the first row (in this case, case_id=1) is hit by the SQL query,
we can see the columns in Template Builder.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

• Oracle BI Publisher no columns loaded from data model

Hello Guys,
I use Oracle BI Publisher 11g. Have created a data model by using
the JDBC thin connection to a 11g database. The creation of the data model
worked fine using a SQL query. Now in the report creation wizard, I select
the "guide me" option to see how nice the wizard is.
The problem comes here, on the second window I should select the columns
but I only read "no columns available". Why is that?

Hi Metalray
For BIP report sample XML data is importent. with sample data you cannot generate the BIP reports.
Follow the below steps, you can achieve your expected BIP output
After crating data set in the data medel save the data model then click on
--get XML output option on right side of the top-corner.
-- then selet no. for the nuber of rows to return dropdown option,
--then click on Run. Then save the sample data by clicking on Save as sample data option.
--then it will take you to the data model page, now again save the data model
--and use it for creating the reports.
Now you were able to see the available columns in the the second window of guide me option
please mark if it helps you..

• Help needed to mark or highlight certain columns in Data Modeler

Hi there,
We use the data modeler to present our data model to the security department to explain/prove for which columns we ran a data masking/anonymization function. I am looking for any kind of way to either highlight or change a set of columns across all tables. So far I could only identify the red dot for “not null” and the option to introduce a ADT/UDT like “ANONYMIZED” to show in the graphical representation what we have done. As we base our DM on empty tables for decent overviews including the PK/FK relationships we are quite flexible. Still the “misusage” of ”Not Null” or ADT/UDT columns does not go together with the required PK/FK’s. Does anyone know a way to mark or highlight certain columns automatically when importing a data dictionary? (Unfortunately RDBMS comments do not get included in any overview). Thanks a lot. Cheers Stefan

Hi Philip, Thanks a lot for puting this enhancement request through.
Just downloaded the latest Patch upgrading to v 3.1.2-704 and confirmed that this functionality is not available yet.
Keeping your experience in mind what kind of expectation to you have for the approval and realization of your request?
Most likely this will take a couple of month – right? Or is there a beta version of 3.2 already available we could use.
Thanks a lot. Cheers Stefan

• Export/Report on dynamic properties in SQL Data Modeler

I'm thinking of using dynamic properties to hold meta-data in SQl Data Modeler, but I can't find a way of exporting or reporting on this info once I have created it.
Am I missing something?

John,
you can download DM 4.0.1 - dynamic properties can be included in custom report templates and into generated reports.

• Including table and column comment in the Data Modeler

Hi all,
I used Oracle's SQL Developer Data Modeler (Version 3.0.0.665) and created a data model for my project. I e-mailed a PDF format of the data model to our Systems Analyst. She asked if I could re-create the data model and include table and column comments. Is this a possibility and if so how is this done?
Thank you for your input,
Seyed

Hi Kent,
Using the information you provided and Oracle’s Working with SQL Developer Modeler Reporting I did the following:
1) Created a Reporting Schema User
1.1) Using my Oracle 10g Personal Edition, I created a new user and gave him DBA administrative privileges
2) Exported Relational Design to Reporting Schema
2.1) Opened the Relational Design
2.2) Exported it to the Reporting Schema. Note, I never got a message ‘Design has been exported successfully’.
3) Reviewed the Report Results
I think exporting the relational design was not successful, and didn’t get any error messages. Had step 2 completed successfully, I would have reviewed the Report Results in SQL Developer. By the way, I know I have marked this topic as closed, but would like to learn your method too.
Thank you for your help,
Seyed

• What is data format "Hypertext Link" in column properties??

Hi,
What is data format "Hypertext Link" in column properties? How to use it?
Can I use column value to navigate to other report without using "Value Interaction" in column properties.

By changing the data format to say HTML, or Hypertext link, you can add HTML content/HTML tags within the column formula.
You can create a column formula that would resolve into a dynamic hyperlink and pass parameters by using Go Url. Check out Chapter 11 in the Oracle® Business Intelligence Presentation Services Administration Guide
Check out an example:

• Right click in data modeler only shows "properties" choice

Hi:
I've been playing with the data modeler for an existing schema and I am unable to follow the directions in most of the tutorials because supposedly right-clicking on a table in the diagram or on within the data modeler browser is supposed to bring up a menu but when I right click I just see "properties". Is this a permission thing? I've made a relational diagram by dragging the objects from the connections view onto a diagram and I see them all.
In particular, I was trying to create a subview in the browser but right-clicking on subviews[] gives me nothing. The most choices I get at any level are "Show" "Hide" "Properties".
SQL Developer 2.1.1.64, Oracle 10gR2.
Thanks.

Hi Philip:
I was trying to import the data dictionary for my current schemas. I thought I was actually able to do this about a year ago with an earlier version. Do I need the download for that? I can see the complete relational model by dragging and dropping the tables/views into the diagram. But most of the data modeler example start with "File->import->Data Dictionary and I never see those submenus.
Thanks
