Data Transfer by WiFi to Networked Drive

Hi,
I've got a Firelite external USB hard drive hooked up to my wifi router on my home network, and I can mount the drive in OSX and see the folders in it, but I keep getting "Error -36 ... some data cannot be read or written" whenever I try to send or get files from the drive. I've got Windows File Sharing and stuff turned on, and I can read&write data onto the Firelite drive from a machine running Windows 2000, so there is no problem with login or so forth that I can find. I'm using SMB to connect to the drive, and that seems to be no problem.
Any suggestions how to get past this error message so that I can actually use the drive? I can't connect it directly to the computer by USB because newer 15" G4 PBs don't have enough power in their ports to run such devices without an external power source (another issue, see the Apple Discussions with 100s of postings on the issue). So using my router to access the drive is the only way to get there and use it for backups.
Thanks,
Megan

Not sure if you've found the answer.

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

  • Any data transfer app (wifi)?

Is there an app that would allow data transfer via Wifi (to a server or other computer) for the purpose of transferring videos I edited in iMovie on the IP4 without having to get them super compressed as it's currenty done on the iPhone?

Not sure if you've found the answer.
    Apple has some thoughts:

  • MiFi: Does data transfer within the home network count as data usage

I want to use a MiFi with a wireless surveillance system, which can record 100s of GBs of video per month. If I send video to a PC all on the same network, does that count as data usage?

Traffic sent over the local network will not be counted against your MiFi/data plan.  VZW charges for all traffic that is sent over thier wireless infrastructure/towers.  If this your question is then that is the answer.
    With that being said:
You can setup your cameras and disconnect the MiFi from the VZW network.  There is a Disconnect button on the main page of the router admin page that allows you to do it.  This would enable you to maintain the local network and confirm that the security system will work offline.  After you confirm your camera to computer network is working you can reconnect it to VZW and see if you can access the computer / camera over the web.
As a local router the MiFi will perform just fine with your cameras and computers.  There are certainly better routers you can purchase for that function but thats another subject.  Its when you try to make your devices available over the internet where most people have problems.  Since the MiFi is a 4G capabile device it is tied into the new SIM card and NAT network.  In most cases public IP addresses are not assigned or accessible on the MiFi.  This makes it very difficult to get through to your devices from a remote location (as I assume you want to do).  Most users on this forum have not found a way around it other than reverting back to an older model like the MiFi 2200.

  • IPad4 wi-fi+celluar data transfer speed on 3g+ network.

I use iPad4 wi-fi+celluar in the HSDPA, HSUPA,  Dual-Carrier network. Download speed is not more than 2,5Mbit/s, when Nokia Lumia 920 gives me 10+Mbit/s (same microSIM, same location, same hours). Tried different carriers - same. Please, help me understand - why I can't use internet at full speeds.
    Thanks anyway.

Here's an article that discusses the third generation iPad with WiFi+cellular.  As you can see, it reports much higher speeds than you have.  So it must depend on environment, how you're testing, etc.
The article discusses "New iPad 4G" - but again that was the third generation iPad which was introduced in March, 2012.

  • Streaming data from cRIO to a data file (binary file) on a network Network Drive on the same LAN

    Dear All
I hope my message finds you all well
My Question is :  is it possible to log my data from cRIO to a network drive and stream the data being captured to a binary file in this drive ? and do the conventional File IO functions ?
I heard that DataSocket can do this , but it is mainly used between computers (this is what i understood so far about it)
My network drive is a DLink ShareCenter : http://sharecenter.dlink.com/products/DNS-320
I know that i can use the NI 9802 SD Card module , but it is out of my budget now to buy it
    Please assist

    Hi Mohammed,
Are you trying to accomplish all this with or without the use of a host machine? If you're doing it with a host machine then the best bet would be to transfer data to the host using network published shared variables and then write to a file on the network from there.
If you're trying to do all this from the cRIO straight to the network drive with no intermediate host PC there are many things to consider. First off would be making sure there are no security protocols on the network drive that would prevent the cRIO from accessing it. Next you'd have to make sure there are no drivers required for the network drive as many drivers will not work on the Real-Time OS since most of these drivers are designed for a Windows system. If all this is taken care of then I'd say FTP is probably your best bet for getting files onto the network drive as long as you have an FTP server.
I'm unsure about if you would be able to stream to a binary file from a cRIO. I would need to know more about your application and what hardware you're using. Again I'd recommend you use a host PC and do the file I/O from there if possible. Can you tell us a bit more about your application and setup?

  • Can we point an Data files to a network drive.

    Hi All
Nice to see you al l!!!
Just for knowledge i tried to install the SAP IDEAS ECC6.0 in a machine and wanted to point the Data files in a Network Mapped drive. As per my studies its should be possible. But while I was installing I tried to point the data file to the mapped Network drive, I couldn't find any option or the Mapped Drive in the drop down options given.  Is there any possibility that i can implement in this fashion.
    Environment: Windows 2003

    Hi ,
    Thanks for your Quick reply.  Just for knowledge. Is it possible to Install the in the local for the first time and change the Data files alone to the Network derive later as we can change the location of the data files in Oracle like ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE u2018<fully qualified path to original data file name>u2019 TO u2018<new or original fully qualified path to new or original data file name>u2019;

  • How do use Time Machine to back up to my network drive?

I have been dealing with this issue for days. When I had bought my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago I figured Id try and back it up to my 1.5tb Western Digital HD that's plugged into the USB port on my router. I Have connected to it through finder and can access it fine however my main point in getting to it is to back up my MacBook with Time Machine over the air to the external HD. I have researched and tried many tricks such as running codes in finder to create a "sparsebundle" using the code " hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname "Time Machine" COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle " in Terminal. I was able to succeed in creating one but my problem comes when I want to transfer it to the network drive. I use the code " rsync -aE COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle /Volumes/NETWORKDRIVE/ ". However I get error codes such as "file could not be transferred (23)" and "no file or directory (2)". Also before I did all of these steps I made sure to make network drives discoverable in Time Machine by running the code " defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 " in Terminal. However without using the trick that I keep getting errors with Time Machine gets error message 45 when attempting to back up to the Network Drive straight after making the Drive discoverable. I know Apple niched Time Machine back ups on network drives after or toward the end of Leopard and thats why it is so hard to do it now but I was hoping someone can aid me in my never ending problem?

    Hi Barney
What format is the drive on the router? It has to be HFS+ (Extended, journaled).
Sorry Barney, that's not correct in this context. The user must create an HFS+ sparse bundle and then upload it to the network drive. The network drive will be formatted as its formatted.
I also believe it has to be an Apple Airport Extreme router.
Again, that is not the case. I am successfully using Time Machine to an Iomega network drive for the last 12 months. No issues at all.
However, you are making your backup completely unreliable.
There may be an element of truth to this, however, I have used the "Star Wars" interface to recover individual files directly.  If I should need to perform a larger recovery and for some reason I can't get the usual access through Apple software, I have established that I can directly access the sparse bundle on the drive and mount it on the computer. Once there, I can just copy files directly from it. The sparse bundle folder structure makes it easy to get the latest version of every file with a couple of mouse drags.  This means that I will always be able to get access to my backups.
Apple nixed it because they couldn't get it to work reliably. I imagine they only support that sort of thing on their own Time Capsule because they can control the wireless transmission and error checking (and they sold TCs specifically for that purpose).
I don't know why Apple nixed it - I've had zero problems with this configuration and it is by far the most sensible way to use Time Machine. It seems completely pointless to have a portable MacBook and then have to physically connect a drive to it permanently for backup purposes.
I've only had personal experience with the Iomega drive - maybe it only works with a limited number of manufacturers?

  • SSD data transfer

Once the data transfer from the original desktop drive to the SSD is complete, is the original drive now for all intent and purpose "clean" or has the data simply been copied to the new SSD?  I am definately a novice who really wants to learn by doing something himself and this forum has turned out to be a great tool.  Thank you.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It is a copy.  The original disk drive is still bootable and as a matter of fact, if you leave the old drive in the computer along with the new SSD you will probably have to select the SSD in the BIOS boot order selection to keep it from booting to the old drive.
Once you are confident the new drive works as expected, you can always reformat the old drive to reclaim the space held by the operation system.  Don't do that without first doing a good backup of everything.

  • Very slow network directory listing - but fast data transfer speed once listed?

    Hello,
I have really tried to sort this myself before opening up to the community, however I have run out of ideas, and hope someone can offer the magic solution I have missed.
I am currently using the 3.4ghz i7 iMac on a 1GB LAN, running OSX10.7.2 - connecting to a Windows Server 2008 (Running Release 2) over ethernet.
If i go to a network directory that i haven't recently accessed it can take up to 60 seconds to show the contents of that directory. Once i have accessed that folder, if i come out of it and go back in it will be instant again - but the first time it lists the directory it looks like i have opened an empty folder - which after anything from 10seconds to 1 minute will suddenly show the files that are there.
Internet connectivity is fast through the network, and file transfers across the LAN are fast. (showing as approx 300mb per second) I can play and edit HD content across the network with no slowdown so I am confident that this issue is not related to the network speed itself, and is more to do with a setting on this mac.
Symptoms are very similar to this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/12245148?messageID=12245148&amp%3b#1224514 8 - however i understand that in OSX Lion - SMB was removed - so i cannot find this file to edit.
I have tried bypassing additional hubs in the network by wiring direct cables to the switch that is connected to the file server, this made no difference.
I have also tried disconnecting the ethernet cable, and running over wifi. This fixes the listing problem, but when editing HD content over a network drive, this connection is not fast enough to carry the data without interruption (some projects are linked to up to 900gb of hd video content!)
Using ethernet, I have tried DHCP, DHCP with manual address, and manual mode. All reproduce this problem. i have tried using the windows workgroup, and tried without it.
I have also followed this suggestion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2134936?threadID=2134936&tstart=45 and used OpenDNS. this did not fix the issue.
For argument sake, I have also just tested a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard to see if it was OS related. This reproduces the exact same problem, near instant directory listing on the wifi, a long and arduous wait on ethernet.
I cannot work out why directory listing is instant over wifi, but not over ethernet on 2 different macs, running 2 different versions of OSX. I also do not understand why if the network is having trouble listing the directories - the data transfer speed is 300mbps when i copy files across the wired network from the file server to the mac.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be the problem here? We are about to start work on a very large project, where the content we are editing is spread out across around 200 different network folders (different shoots captured over the past 2 years). We really don't have the time to wait 60 seconds each time we need to access one of those directories to look for a file, and I am very close to pulling all my hair out!
I really look forward to hearing from anyone who can offer any insight.

If you are suspecting that the Windows update had something to do with your LAN going slow, then try the following:
    1.  Look for updates for your clients LAN NIC driver; or
    2.  Un-install the updates.

  • HT201250 Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

  • Time Capsule only runs with 1,1Mbit up/down during data transfer, internet speed is ok, TC is used to extend an existing network

    Hello Everyone,
I have a new 2TB Time Capsule running with a MacBook Air. I want to use the TC to access data (Aperture library, iTunes library, other Files) and to backup my MacBook Air via Time Machine. I set it up, integrated the TC in my Network (FritzBox) by choosing "extend existing network" and it works. BUT only with 1.1Mbit/second while writing or reading Data to/from it. Internet speed is very good, like it was before. While the 1.1Mbit/second seem to be ok with Aperture and iTunes (streaming music and movies) it is still painfully slow and I'm not realy happy with that
    I've read that:
The 1.1Mbit problem is pretty common when Time Capsule is integrated and used to extend a network (bridge modus), it also looses all ethernet connectivity then (that woul explain why connecting it by ethernet didn't help during initial setup and data transfer)
Is there a solution besides ditching the Fritzbox and using the TC to build the network? Because basicly I still need the Fritzbox for its DECT features.
Thank you for any help in advance and have a nice day,
    Olli

You have double hop wireless with this setup..
You should bridge the TC.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge, and plug the TC into the Frizyboy by ethernet.
Then you can setup the TC wireless to reinforce the fritzy..
    Same wireless name as SSID.
Same security settings... really should be WPA2 AES or in TC personal.
    Same password..
    Just different wireless channel.
Then you can use 5ghz on the TC if you are up close and personal.

  • I have an iPod Touch but I currently don't have a PC.  I found an app that would allow me to connect to my network drive and I was able to transfer music files to it.  These files do not show under the Music app and I can't find any way to do it.

I need help from some Apple people. I have an iPod Touch and I wanted to load it up with some fresh music but I currently don't have a PC. I found an app that would allow me to connect to my 2TB network drive directly and I was able to transfer a bunch of music files to the iPod. Unfortunately, these new files do not show under the Music app and I can't seem to find any way to convince the iPod that they are music. I can play them through the file manager only. Android doesn't have this problem, any music I put on my phone is recognized as music and can be played through any of the music apps. Am I missing something or is Apple to inflexible to handle this?

You can't. The only way to get songs in the Music app is to sync from a computer or to download from iTunes.

  • Question: New Hard Drive and Data Transfer Kit Device

Yep, I go another HDD this time for my lil Compaq Persario 700 series notebook OS Win XP. I bought a DriveWire Univeral Adapter & Data Transfer Kit. I want to know if there would be any issue transferring my iTunes Library to my new HDD? I do have some music apart of my iTunes Library that's DRM protected. Should still deactivate my account during the transfer . . . that is, if it's possible. Thank you for any assistance your can give me. Itunes 10 by the way.

From what you posted, you should be able to set the itunes media folder location to the exHD and then run the ituens consolidate library command.
That will put your itunes library content onto the exHD.
    Here's Apple's article on that
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364
Pay attention to this note from it
+Note: If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library). No matter what, it's always a good idea to have a backup of the media you have in iTunes.+
That means you MUST have the exHD connected BEFORe starting itunes. WHat it doesn't mention is, it always needs to have the same drive letter. WIndows can change USB port drive letter without telling you it's doing it. Best practice, is to assign a permanent drive letter such as m: for Media. You can assign drive letters using windows disk manager.
There's no need to deactivate any account during this procedure - why do you think you should?
