Data Warehouse report query using Entity Beans

I have used the EJB technology on one project, so I am not all that familiar with
best practices.
In my new project, I have to produce reports using a query that goes against a
dimensional database. I am wondering what options I have to run the query and
extract the results given that the application will run on WebLogic.
1) Straight JDBC
2) BMP
3) CMP (could be a problem because the quety is a join query, but I am not sure
if WebLogic requires that the query is against a table rather than a view)
The query is read-only. I am more interested in ease of coding and code management
rather than application performance at this point because I think the query will
spend a relatively large time executing on the Oracle database.
I would like to hear the best practices to be employed in this case. Thanks very
much!
Ravi.

Don't use entity beans for this. Straight JDBC is not perfect either, but it
is preferable to entity beans for this type of work.

  • Insert data into table from JSP page using Entity Beans(EJB 3.0)

    I want to insert data into a database table from JSP page using Entity Beans(EJB 3.0).
    1. I have a table 'FRIENDS', (in Oracle 10g database).
    2. It has two columns, 'NAME' and 'CITY'. Both have datatype strings(varchar2).
    3. Now from a JSP page, having two textfields, 'NAME' and 'CITY', I want to insert data into table 'FRIENDS'.
    4. In between JSP and database is a Entity Bean(EJB 3.0) and a stateless session bean.
    5. I am using JDev as editor.
    Please provide me code ASAP or link with similar example.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I am also trying that scenario. So u can
    Post the jsp form data to a Servlet which will act as a Controller.
    In the servlet invoke the business method.
    Similar kind of app is in www.roseindia.net
    Hope this would help u.
    Meanwhile if u get any optimal solution, pls post it.
    Thanks,
    Happy Java Coding.

  • Disadvantages of using entity beans.

    can I know the disadvantages of using entity beans.

    sigh I guess if someone puts it on a website it must be true...
    "Forces the use of a heavy component mechanism for fine grained business objects."
    Heaviness is not some arbitrary side-effect. It is directly due to the services provided by the EntityBeans (transactions, etc). If you need those services, you pay the price. If you don't then you shouldn't be using EJB to begin with. Also with the advent of LocalInterfaces, fine-grainedness is no longer a liability.
    "More complex than JDO limiting developer productivity."
    Perhaps it has less to do with limited productivity, and more to do with limited developers.
    "More difficult to achieve good performance."
    Compared to a simple data storage mechanism, sure.
    "Inheritance not supported."
    Really? Wow, I guess all the EJB code I've written for the last 3 years doesn't really work.
    "Cannot be used for persistence in non-application server environments."
    Uhh, yeah, but seeing as how the decision to use EJBs is not limited to the persistance scheme, the non-use of an application server is moot.
    "There is no dynamic query mechanism to lookup entity beans (finders are specified at compile time)."
    And what compiled business process (i.e SessionBeans) requires dynamic lookup of arbitrary data? Humans performing search functions can be done via entity beans, but probably should not be done since a large searches do not (or very rarely) need to be transactional.
    "It is not easy to write unit tests for beans as it is not possible to use them outside of the application server."
    For a long time this was true, but there are now many unit test suites designed for J2EE.
    "No support for automatic primary key generation."
    In the spec, no. But it's fairly trivial to implement on your own.
    "Only relational databases are supported."
    If you use CMP, yes. If you use BMP, you can do whatever you want inside your ejbLoad()/ejbStore() methods. Another reason to not use CMP.

  • Nested EJB QL Query in Entity Bean

    Hi All
    We are using CMP based Entity bean which has name <i>EmployeeBean</i> with a field pSALARY. We want a finder method which return an employee with maximum salary. we are using following Query.
    <b>select object(b) from EmployeeBean  b  where
                        b.pSALARY = (select max(c.pSALARY)  from EmployeeBean c)</b>
    But we validate the query in NWDS but we get following error
    <b>EJB QL statement is invalid. See General User Output View for details.</b>
    General User output view is blank. so we could not analyze the error in this query.
    can anybody tell us what's wrong with this Query. Or else how we should formulate the query in another way so that it gives us required result.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi
    just try  like this...
    MAX() and MIN() can be used to find the largest or smallest value in a collection of any type of CMP field. It cannot be used with identifiers or paths that terminate in a CMR field. The result type will be the type of CMP field that is being evaluated. For example, the following query returns the highest amount paid for a Job.
    <b>SELECT MAX( job.pSALARY )
    FROM EmployeeBean AS c, IN (c.EmployeeBean) AS job</b>
    The MAX() and MIN() functions can be applied to any valid CMP value including primitive types, strings, and even serializable objects. As you may recall, a CMP field can be a serializable application object that is converted to a binary field and stored in a database. The result of applying the MAX() and MIN() functions to serializable objects is not specified, however, because there is no standardized way of determining which serializable object is greater than another.
    The result of applying the MAX() and MIN() functions to a String is type depends on the underlying data store used. This uncertainty results from problems inherent in String comparisons, which are addressed fully in the section "The Problems with Strings."

  • To use Entity Bean or Oracle stored Package?

    Currently, in my project, Weblogic8.1 and Oracle is used, but lots of business logic is implemented using Oracle stored Packages, many of these packages have a package level readonly lookup table(like index-by table or nested table), which is populated with data from database, once the package is called, and is accessed very often in subsequent calls of stored procedures.
    Since, in Weblogic server, a connection pool is maintained, and those package level lookup tables would be stored as session data in oracle PGA, I'm afraid this might cause oracle database server to be overloaded.
    to fully take advantage of middleware cache service that weblogic provide, should I move those business logic out of oracle and implement them using like read only entity bean?
    any help appreciated!

    Its very hard to say without knowing the usage patterns of the data. It sounds like you have a lot of read-only entities. These could be spread around a WLS cluster, therefore there is more scalability and performance with this option. However, I would not neccessarily rewrite business logic from SP into EJB just for middle-tier caching.
    If its a DB intensive app with lots of SQL, then if the calls are within SP's, there is only 1 call from WLS and the DBA ought o be able to tune the DB usin read-ahead and other DBA semantics. If there is locality of reference in the data, again, DB can use read-ahead better than WLS, although RO cache in middle is more scalable than DBMS.
    I wouldnt rewrite business logic from SP to EJB/Entity beans to take advantage of cache, especially if there is no locality of read-only reference to data. Oracle could do this better in my opinion, especially if SP's already exist
    Need for information on the usage patterns of the data - how is it CRUD'd.
    I would use-case the steel threads and put them under test load to see if the SP's really are an issue, since this is an architecture decision. What state is the project at? Live/Dev? Inception?

  • Named query in Entity Bean - Problem with embedded class

    Hello Forum,
    I'm trying to set up a named query in my Entity Bean and I'm unable to get
    it up and running for an embedded class object.
    The class hierarchy is as follows:
             @MappedSuperclass
             AbstractSapResultData (contains dayOfAggregation field)
                     ^
                     |
            @MappedSuperclass
            AbstractSapUserData (contains the timeSlice field)
                     ^
                     |
              @Entity
              SapUserDataThe named query is as follows:
    @NamedQuery(name = SapUserDataContext.NAMED_QUERY_NAME_COUNT_QUERY,
                                query = "SELECT COUNT(obj) FROM SapUserData AS obj WHERE "
                                         + "obj.sapCustomerId"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + SapResultDataContext.COLUMN_NAME_SAP_CUSTOMER_ID
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.sapSystemId"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + SapResultDataContext.COLUMN_NAME_SAP_SYSTEM_ID
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.sapServerId"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + SapResultDataContext.COLUMN_NAME_SAP_SERVER_ID
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.dayOfAggregation.calendar"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + DayContext.COLUMN_NAME_DAY_OF_AGGREGATION
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.timeSlice.startTime"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + "timeSliceStartTime"
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.timeSlice.endTime"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + "timeSliceEndTime")The query deploys and runs except that part:
                                         + "obj.dayOfAggregation.calendar"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + DayContext.COLUMN_NAME_DAY_OF_AGGREGATIONI don't see any difference to the part of the query accessing the timeSlice
    field which is also an embedded class object - I access it in exactly the same way:
                                         + "obj.timeSlice.startTime"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + "timeSliceStartTime"
                                         + " AND "
                                         + "obj.timeSlice.endTime"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + "timeSliceEndTime"The problem is that the complete query runs on JBoss application server
    but on the SAP NetWeaver application server it only rund without the
                                         + "obj.dayOfAggregation.calendar"
                                         + "= :"
                                         + DayContext.COLUMN_NAME_DAY_OF_AGGREGATIONpart - If I enable that part on SAP NetWeaver the server complains:
    [EXCEPTION]
    {0}#1#java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: line 1: Comparison '=' not defined for dependent objects
    SELECT COUNT(obj) FROM SapUserData AS obj WHERE obj.sapCustomerId= :sap_customer_id AND obj.sapSystemId= :sap_system_id AND obj.sapServerId= :sap_server_id AND obj.dayOfAggregation.calendar= :day_of_aggregation AND obj.timeSlice.startTime= :timeSliceStartTime AND obj.timeSlice.endTime= :timeSliceEndTime
                                                                                                                                                                                                 ^I know that this isn't an application server specific forum but the SAP NetWeaver server is the most strict EJB 3.0 and JPA 1.0 implementation I've seen so far so I think I'm doing something wrong there.
    Someone in the SAp forum mentioned:
    The problem here is that you compare an input-parameter with an embeddable field of your entity.
    Regarding to the JPQL-grammer (spec 4.14) you are not allowed to compare
    with the non-terminal embeddable field but with the terminal fields of your
    embeddable. Stating that your embedded class might have the fields
    startTime and endTime your JPQL query might look like this:
    Query q = em.createQuery("SELECT count(obj.databaseId) FROM SapUserData obj WHERE obj.timeSlice.startTime = :startTime AND obj.timeSlice.endTime = :endTime");
    q.setParameter("startTime", foo.getStartTime());
    q.setParameter("endTime", foo.getEndTime());
    q.getResultList();
    This limitation in the JPQL grammar is rather uncomfortable.
    An automatic mapping of the parameter's fields to the terminal fields of your
    embedded field would be more convenient. The same can be said for lists
    as parameter-values which is possible in HQL, too. I think we have to wait
    patiently for JPA 2.0 and hope for improvements there. :-)
    With that help I was able to get it up and running for the timeSlice field but
    I don't see the difference to the dayOfAggregation field which is also just
    another embedded class using an object of a class annotated with
    @Embeddable.
    The get method of the dayOfAggregation field is as follows:
         * Get method for the member "<code>dayOfAggregation</code>".
         * @return Returns the dayOfAggregation.
        @Embedded
        @AttributeOverrides({@AttributeOverride(name = "calendar", /* Not possible to use interface constant here - field name must be used for reference */
                                                column = @Column(name = DayContext.COLUMN_NAME_DAY_OF_AGGREGATION,
                                                                 nullable = false)),
                             @AttributeOverride(name = "weekday",
                                                column = @Column(name = DayContext.COLUMN_NAME_WEEKDAY,
                                                                 nullable = false)),
        public Day getDayOfAggregation() {
            return this.dayOfAggregation;
        }The link to my question in the SAP forum for reference:

    The Entity Bean remote interface methods access the database.

  • Multiple Database Pooling using Entity Bean

    Hi,
    Can anyone come across this problem? I have an entity bean (BMP). I want to connect to multiple databases(Oracle, My-SQL, MS-SQL Server). The application is like this. if a request come from the client i have to identify the client request and connect to the database. How to do this. How to connect to get the pool from the connection pooling. Please reply its urgent.
    thanks
    Prem

    Thanks for ur reply.
    what the point is i want to identify the client request and send this request to that bean. i have developed 30 cmp beans, if i have to identify i have to change all cmp to bmp, is there any solution to this.

  • Using a BLOB data type in a CMP Entity Bean: Error when send large files

    I've successfully impleenting BLOB in my EJB. But the main prob is, it can only work on small file which is around 3K. Any larger files than that will caused error (refer below). I got info from a friend which is using normal JDBC call to insert a file into BLOB column that you can't use java.sql.Blob data type which will have this limitation. He suggested that by using oracle.sql.BLOB, this prob won't exist.
    The problem is I'm unable to use oracle.sql.BLOB in my CMP EJB because in the jbosscmp-jdbc.xml, I'm able to specify the normal BLOB only which is java.sql.Blob (Refer below).
             <cmp-field>
                <field-name>attachment</field-name>
                <column-name>attch</column-name>
                <jdbc-type>BLOB</jdbc-type>
                <sql-type>BLOB</sql-type>
            </cmp-field>So, how do I solve this problem? I need to store files which the size is much bigger than that. I'm using JBoss 4 as my app server and Oracle 9i as my DB. I can see that there's many ppl facing this prob, but no solution to it. Pls advise. Thanks.

  • Report Query using a Named Column Report Layout fails to produce PDF

    I am testing FOP and the Shared Component Report Queries query with a Named Column Report Layout. The xsl file was built using Stylus Studio and worked fine with the saved XML data file in Stylus Studio.
    500 Internal Server Error
    500 Internal Server Error
    Servlet error: An exception occurred.
    The current application deployment descriptors do not allow for including it in this response.
    Please consult the application log for details.
    I assume this is a message from FOP. What do I do now?

    Sam,
    I would suggest to take APEX out of the picture first and see if you can get this to work directly with your FOP solution, i.e. generate the XML data and take your XSL file and then post it directly to the FOP JSP (or whichever rendering engine you use). If this works, the problem might be somewhere in your APEX configuration. If it doesn't work, then the problem is likely in your XSL or XML structure. Here's how you can setup a static HTML page to post your XML and XSL to FOP:

  • Restrict displayed data in a query using roles

    Hi experts.
    i'm writing to you to explain our trouble.
    We have an infocube with 2 company codes 'A' & 'B'.
    We are trying to display only one of them depending on the user that executes THE SAME query, whitouth using a filter for the company code (0comp_code).
    We have done a couple of roles that restrict that infoobject and we have activated de chekbox in the infoobject properties/reporting "authorization relevant".
    This doesn´t work as well as we wanted, it restricts the access to the data that we don´t specify in the role, but when the query is executed, we obtain a message which says that the user has not authorization to acces data, here is the main problem, we only want to display a company code, but when we execute the query and tries to acces the data that is not defined in the role for that user, the query crashes and doesn't display anything.
    Is there a way to do what we want using role authorizations?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your answers, but, i am still having the problem.
    We are working with the 3.5 version, so we can not do what you say.
    In the other hand we have already used the transaction rssm to do that, but we are still having the authorization message when we execute the query whitouth a filter and comes data that is not defined int our roles.
    I am not sure, perhaps it is not possible with the 3.5 version.
    Thanks.

  • Save Data in Report to Use later

    I have several names to report I need to combine data from several records of the same type with different codes. Not all names have the same codes. I want to report the data on one line. Is there a way to save date to be used later in the report?
    For Example:
    Name              Code   Start Date        Code Transfer Date  Code              Promote Date
    Sue
    SD
    01/15/2000
    TD
    01/15/2005
    Mitch
    SD
    01/15/2004
    Sam
    SD
    01/15/2003
    PD
    01/15/2006

    Using the three records above I want the report to print (I'm using the Name Group Footer):
    Name
    Start Date
    Transfer Date
    Promote Date
    Sue
    01/15/2000
    01/15/2005
    Mitch
    01/15/2004
    Sam
    01/15/2003
    01/15/2006
