Database connection books?

I am a old school Visual Basic guy and trying to learn java as hobby. I am wanting to developed a web server application for a local charity organization. This is free work and has no time limit.
I have be using Java Creater since Wednesday. So please bear with me. I am getting along well with the Java part but when it comes to connection to a database, well I am real new. I would like to have a table to populate a drop down list. (similar to a collection in VB.NET) and I am lost. Eventually I will have a small database with client information on about one thousand people( Name , address, ect). I am not asking for code or to be burped. I would like a good book or other suggestions on how to learn how to do this properly.
Thanks for taking time to read this.

To get your feet wet, there's a lot of resources on the web.
I'd suggest starting here:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/index.html
After that, maybe one of these:
http://faq.javaranch.com/view?JdbcFaq
http://www.javaworld.com/channel_content/jw-jdbc-index.shtml
After that, you'll maybe have some better idea of what's involved and whether you need a book or can get by with Google and maybe a forum question or two from time to time.
Actually, I don't know of a really good book for this area of Java (unless you're interested in high end details of working with the Oracle database, then I'd suggest R.M.Menon's Expert Oracle JDBC Programming; it's not really a "getting started" book though). I've been underwhelmed by many of the other JDBC books I've bought...

  • Bc4j.xcfg, database connections and deploying ADF apps to oc4j

    I'm trying to understand how to enable custom database connections on a JDeveloper ADF application deployed to a stand-alone instance of OC4J.
    All entity objects were created as ADF Business Components.
    I looks like the db connection information used by the application is stored in a file named "bc4j.xcfg".
    How would I change the database connection information between different environments, changing the server, port and password information from an OC4J instance?
    I'd like to use an OC4J defined data-sources.xml file, but am looking for the simplest approach for now.

    Tomato tomaato, call it what you will, we now have to spend time (money) figuring out how to change from using the recommended use of a "connection" from Oracle tutorials and in Oracle Press books.
    Plus, neither I nor our client can get JDeveloper ADF 10.1.3 to work on OAS 10.1.2.
    Oracle has been of little help, other than stating to follow documentation. We followed the documentation at least a dozen times and on three different install of OAS 10.1.2.
    Why doesn't JDeveloper have a check-box or button that reconfigures the application to run on 10.1.2 (J2EE 1.3), there is a check-box to change JDK versions (1.4)? This is suspect to me.
    We are going to be speaking with the client this week, and have to state the ADF application works, but NOT on OAS 10.1.2.
    Does ADF work on OAS 10.1.3, absolutely, but the client is in 10.1.2 and can not upgrade at this time.
    I've read in blogs where lots of developers have the same issues without resolution and Oracle should just come out and state that 10.1.3 does not work on 10.1.2.
    So my experience has been a mixed bag with ADF, both in terms of the software and customer support from Oracle.

  • Make use of established database connection

    From within an application in the Application Navigation, I have successfully established a connection to a database which is on another host machine. The steps are:
    right-click on the name of the application > select New > Database Tier > Database Connection > Connection Name ....
    After the connection is done, I am able to see the tables, etc. in the Connection Navigation, i.e., the connection was successful.
    Under the same application, I created a web project and in the project I am writing a servlet. I figure I can make use of the established connection as described above, to create sql statement object? But I do not know how. For example, I named that connection SbConnection, and tried the statements:
      Statment stmt = null;
      stmt = SbConnection.createStatement();
    But it does not work out. I am trying this because the classical way of
      Class.forname(....).newInstance();
      Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(......);
    does not work no matter how I tried.
    I am just starting in doing web application, servlet and JSP etc. and would appreciate a lot for any help.

    Fantastic, dvohra! It works out! Thanks a lot for the know-how!
    Next I am going to dig out something to read about JNDI and DataSource type of connection. But the part of editing the web.xml is magic and myth to me. Any suggested books or web sites for reading? (After know-how is know-why and know what I am doing.) Many thanks!

  • Immediate HELP in Tomcat 5 to Postgresql 7.4 database connectivity problem

    Hi,
    I failed to connect Tomcat 5.0.24 with Postgresql
    7.4.2. The files created by me and the changes i had
    made in the existing files are rates.jsp,
    conversionDAO.java, web.xml and server.xml. The error
    message on the top of the rest of it was "The value of
    useBean class attribute converter.conversionDAO is
    invalid". So far I found out that the coding for
    database connectivity purpose in conversionDAO.java
    cause the error. Another thing is Postgresql jdbc
    driver is required to set in the CLASSPATH for the
    java file to access the Postgresql database. I don't
    know where should I put it in Tomcat for web

  • FIM 2010 Sync Error : stopped-database-connection-lost

    Hello everyone,
    a weird thing just happened to me,
    i'm synchronizing my MA and suddently i get the "stopped-database-connection-lost" error
    i have 5 Galsync MAs working perfectly and this sixth one just failing ... (since like today)
    which makes me wonder what is happening ... ?
    any ideas ?
    thanks !
    Hitch Bardawil

    Hitch,
    Look in the event log on the FIM Sync Server and on the SQL Server.
    This error occurs when FIM can't contact the SQL Server that hosts the FIMSynchronizationService database.
    Does this happen every time the sixth MA is run? What if you run them in a different order (might help us distinguish between a resource issue and something specific to that MA)?

  • Slow Initial Database Connection

    I think I have a slowness issue with the initial Oracle database connection. When I try to connect initially, the connection , it takes a long time. Is there anyway to speed this up...
    I am using encryption and jdbc on oracle.
    This takes a good 20 - 30 seconds....
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    PARAMETERS.put("oracle.net.encryption_client","REQUIRED");
    PARAMETERS.put("oracle.net.encryption_types_client","DES40C");
    PARAMETERS.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_client","REQUESTE");
    PARAMETERS.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_types_client","MD5");
    PARAMETERS.put("user",user);
    PARAMETERS.put("password",password);
    connect = DriverManager.getConnection(dbUrl,PARAMETERS);

    Didn't I answer this question?
    The process of encrypting the connection, and generating MD5 checksums for each message sent over that connection both take considerable time to set up and the only way to make it go faster is to throw more processing power at it (i.e., get a faster computer), or switch to a far weaker form of encryption (but that means we can break the code in mere minutes).
    This is a known feature. This is why the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Reconniassance Office (NRO) have more supercomputers than any other US Government Agency.
    If time really is a factor, then I suggest that you drop the MD5 requirement. MD5 essentially confirms that you have received all of the data you are expecting (and in a particular order) and no more than that. Attempting to decrypt DES also confirms that you have received all of the data you wanted (in the correct order) and no more than that. In other words, the two functions are redundant.
    However, MD5 is a one way function whereas DES is two way; DES allows you to decrypt the message itself, but MD5 only allows you to confirm that the message is genuine. Hence, drop MD5 in favor of DES.
    If you're really interested in rewriting the DES and MD5 schemes for more speed, do some reading on the cryptography forums, or check out an appropriate book at the library.

  • PHP database connection strategy

    Hello everyone,
    I'm currently writing a website with PHP and MySQL.
    I would like to know which strategy you choose to manage database connection.
    I did not find any way to have a database connection pooling in PHP like I usally use in J2EE.
    My current strategy is some kind of singleton my front controller will share with all "sub controller".
    So, to render a page, I'll have a single static connection ( using PDO ). Opened at the beginning and closed at the end of the page.
    So, what do you use in your PHP webapps?
    Regards.

    Care to give me an example, or point me to an online example of this?
    I'm merely an amateur, and don't understand things like 'singletons' - I do think that I currently code in MVC, but I would like to know more about design patterns. When it comes to db-connections, I think I open the connection, load all the needed data and close the connection. Don't know whether I 'collect the data in an object', though
    If you search a very good book, my suggestion is:
    http://www.amazon.com/Objects-Patterns- … 982&sr=8-1
    Seriouly, a must have!

    Great to see I'm not completely wrong

    Yep, I know Zend. But I want to create something without any framework to learn and improve my php knowledge.

  • Database connection and recordsets

    I have set up a database connection (to an Access database)
    and set up .asp pages to display various results. This works OK in
    the testing server apart from web links. How do I make those
    database fields which contain web addresses function as links? Is
    it to do with bindings? As you can probably tell, I'm quite new to
    Dreamweaver.
    Thanks

    Use the link fields and on the dialogue box that opens,
    choose the radio
    button that says "From Data Sources" instead of "File
    System". That will
    open up the access to the database fields and you can choose
    them.
    The link that results looks like this format:
    page2.asp?MyID=<%=myid %>

  • Installation problem with NW'04 SR1: database connection failed

    Hi all,
    while installing NW '04 SR1 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and MS SQL Server 2000 SP4 I ran into an error related to the database connection. While performing the step "Load Java Database content" SAPinst crashes with the message
    com.sap.sql.log.OpenSQLException: Could not load class com.ddtek.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver.
    The connection to the SLQ Server with e.g. the Query Analyzer is OK. I had a problem with this installation setup before (have a look at the corresponding <a href="https://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?threadID=338638&tstart=0">thread</a> ), the JDBC drivers where missing on the installation master but after copying them in the right direction the installation went on with no problem up to this point...
    Has anybody an idea what could have happened here? Is this maybe a problem connected to the one I recently had
    Below I attached the sapinst.log and jload.log with more detailed messages.

  • Closing the database connection after report in a server application

    I searched these forums and the internet for a definitive answer on asking the Crystal SDK for java to close the jdbc connection after it has generated a report.  We have been using the Crystal Report SDK to generate reports within our JEE application, built upon the Spring framework, for the past two years.  It works well, especially if you prepare views in the database for your reports.
    From what I can tell once you have used ReportClientDocument to create your report you all the close() method to release resources associated with report generation, but this does not close the jdbc database connection.
    Further research states that if you are using the CrystalReportViewer you can call the dispose method to close the database connection.  We are not using JSP nor this class, so that does us little good.
    Finally I found a post that one could call ((AdvancedReportDocument)reportClientDocument.getReportSource()).dispose().  This doesn't drop the connection either.
    Each report actually opens 3 connections according to SQL Server.  Each report will reuse the connections it has open, so for 50 reports, theoretically, we could have up to 150 connections.  We explained to our client those connections  remain inactive, however this is unacceptable to our client as they would like to minimize the number of connections left open to their database.
    If anyone can post any further information on this issue, it is much appreciated.

    Yes, another team member found the issue.  Quite embarrassing really I didn't see it.  I was looking for the answer within Crystal's libraries.  It had nothing to do with Crystal.
    The developer who wrote the helper code for using Crystal first opened a connection to the datasource for the live production database and read that connection information for the report. Next he set that connection information in the report template's PropertyBag, then ran the report. The developer however forgot to close the connection he used to look up the connection info, leaving a memory leak and using up all the connections.
    I'm glad you inquired.  I forgot to post the resolution here.

    Hussein,
    One thing which I noticed now is in the apps Tier the
    tnsnames.ora under $TNS_ADMIN
    shows entry like this:
    PROD=
            (DESCRIPTION=
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsServerName>)(PORT=1521))
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<dbServer>)(PORT=1521))
                (CONNECT_DATA=
                    (SID=PROD)
            )Actually *(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsIPaddress>)(PORT=1521))* this line in the tnsnames.ora is not correct. In fact the appsServerName should be replaced with dbServerName
    I deleted the tnsnames.ora and reran autoconfig but it is again recreating the same entry.
    Any clue how this can be fixed?
    Thanks

    It fails because in that particular server which i want to deploy the application i have not add all databases JDBC driver.
    is there any solution for it?
    thanks

    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, password);
