Database Preperation on RHEL5
Hi all,
Can someone give me the best practices partition layout for Oracle 10g/11g on redhat5 Ent? My server is configured as follows:
DELL 2950
1.2 TB (RAID5) comprised of 5 Drives of 300Gb SATA 6ht drive is hot spare)
PERC RAID controller
16GB RAM
What paritions should be primary? How can this space be best utilized? Database will be approx 60GB. Would EXT3 be the optimal file system format? Our main and additional mount points would be: apps, d10, d11, d12, d13. Should / boot, be on a primary partition? Any assistance would be helpful.
damorgan,
You're correct, I did leave out some further details and do appreciate your response thus far. Let me see if I can answer some of your questions. In regards to archive redo logs, yes, they will be stored on the server, as for the size, that will vary from 10mb - 200 mb and we haven't decided for how long we will keep them.
RMAN via OSB will be stored on another server, then out to tape.
Flashback will be enabled and logging for 3 - 5 hours only.
Datafile growth is minimal. Not too much data will be entered into the existing database. Really, not a complex system. We track permits and customer accounts for land management. As for RAID5, well, I have a total of 6 drives, 300GB SATA. All the other Oracle servers that were here prior to my coming on on board, are ll RAID5. I really didn't want to tamper with their standards. But open to any sugestions given what I have.
Thanks!

Any advice on cloning a 10.2.0.4.0 database on Linux RHEL5.6
Hello Guru's,
I am looking to move 2 production servers on RHEL 5.6 running oracle 10.2.0.4.0 over to 2 new Dell R410's, both are live production systems and I need to have a minimal amount of downtime. I would normally do a simple export/import but a few of my tables are now over 200 million rows- this is a nightmare to export/import. I am also running advanced replication on both servers on a few tables- not the big ones.
Any advice on how to do this quickly, I was considering testing database cloning, but I have never tried it and wanted real world advice before I waist time researching a method that would be useless.
Thank you in advance for any advice/experience you have to get this done quickly and effective.
Kindest regards,

There was OS upgrade from RHEL5 to RHEL6 and Oracle 11gR2 ( 11.2.0.3) is running on rhel5, we need to upgrade to 11.2.0.4 on RHEL6.
Do anyone know what are the exact steps to perform this task?

How to install oracle developer 10g on rhel 5
hi,
i have install oracle database 10g on rhel5 now i want to install developer 10g on this machine so plz send me any link where i can know step by step installation of oracle developer 10g on rhel5.
thankssuperdba wrote:
although i know this forum is related to database but i would also be grateful if u send me the link of right forum.The link?How about the steps, so you can find the right forum regardless of the question?
Start at http://forums.oracle.com (top left of this page)
Scroll down to a relevant category, such as Developer Tools
If the relevant forum is not visible click on 'More' (Forms IS visible) -
Special characters not displaying in button label
My production environment is: Oracle Forms 6i connecting to an Oracle 8i database. Forms are Windows client/server. In a form there is a layout of buttons like a QWERTY keyboard. And in the property palette information for each data block, the item is of type "Push Button" and the default Label is set to a specific number which correlates to what that number translates into a special character (i.e. Portuguese, or Spanish characters). So example: CHR196 label = "196". So when at runtime. The following command is executing upon seeing this canvas:
Set_Item_Property('CHR196', LABEL, CHR(196));
So in Forms6i the CHR(196) comes out to be a letter in the alphabet from either Spanish or Portuguese and shows up perfectly.
But NOT in 11g. That environment I'm in is:
Oracle Fusion Middleware Forms 11g on RHEL5 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5) on a 32-bit platform
connecting to
Oracle Database 11g on RHEL5 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5) on a 64-bit platform
using a
Windows based browser (IE7 - Internet Explorer 7).
Could it be due to the forms being in a JVM (Java Virtual Machine)? All I see is a small "square" and this shows up on ALL the button labels. Could it be the NLS_LANGUAGE format of the database? Because when I run the query : SELECT CHR(196) FROM dual on 8i or 11g, the proper character shows up in TOAD or SQL+.
Thanks,Hello Paul,
I once used hexadecimal coded characters like &xnnn; and they were not transformed. When coding them in decimal, everthing worked fine.

For that i need to drop this existing database and restrore, recovery from those backups. My database is configured with asm that is having two disk groups.
DATA for storing data
FRA for archive logs
How can i drop the rac 10.2.0.4 database and restore & recovery database from RMAN backups with asm. Could any one send clean steps for this testing?
Thanks

Before droping this database how to deregister these services from clusterware? After recover the database how to register the database services with clusterware?if you want to register/de-register, you need to use SRVCTL in clusterware. commands to ADD/REMOVE from clusterware, refer this below note.

How resolve the problem?
Thanks!I have not tried it yet myself. However, Tim Hall has a step-by-step at
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleDB10gR2InstallationOnRHEL5.php
The challenge: when crashes occur, you will need to dewtermine whether they are due to Oracle, due to the untested RedHat, due to the Oracle-RedHat mix. And you will be on your own for a while. <g>

Looking for help to increase performance on a DB XML database.
I'll try to answer all the questions in the Performance Questionnaire from here.
1) I'm primarily concerned with insertion performance. The best I've seen so far is about 6000 inserts/per second. This is running inside a VMWare VM with 3 GB of RAM. The VM is set up with 2 CPUs each with 2 cores. The host machine has 8GB of RAM with a dual core 2.67 GHZ i7 (2 logical cores per CPU). The best performance I've seen is by running 2 threads of execution. A single thread only gets me about 2500 inserts per/second.
This is all within a very simple, isolate program. I'm trying to determine how to re-architect a more complicated system, but if I can't hope to hit 10k inserts per second with my sample, I don't see how it's possible to expand this out to something more complicated.
2) Versions: BDBXML version 2.5.26 no special patches or config options
3) BDB version 4.8.26, no special patches
4) 2.67 dual core, hyperthreaded intel i7 (4 logical processors)
5) Host: Windows 7 64-bit, Guest: RHEL5 64-bit
6) Underlying disk is a 320GB WesternDigital barricuda (SATA). It's a laptop harddrive, I believe it's only 5400 RPM. Although the VM does not have exclusive access to the drive, it is not the same drive as the Host sytem drive. (i.e. Windows runs off of the C drive, this is the D drive). The has a 60GB slice of this drive.
7) Drive is NTFS formatted for the host. Guest, ext3
8) Host 8gb, guest 3gb (total usage when running tests low, i.e. no swapping by guest or host)
9) not currently using any replication
10) Not using remote filesystem
11) db_cv_mutex=POSIX/pthreads/library/x86_64/gcc-assembly
12) Using the C++ API for DBXML, and the C API for BDB
using gcc/g++ version 4.1.2
13) not using app server or web server
14) flags to 'DB_ENV->open()': | DB_SYSTEM_MEM
| DB_INIT_MPOOL
| DB_INIT_LOCK
| DB_INIT_LOG
| DB_INIT_TXN
| DB_RECOVER
| DB_THREAD
other env flags explicitly set:
DB_LOG_IN_MEMORY 1
DB_LOG_ZERO 1
set_cachesize(env, 1, 0, 1) // 1GB cache in single block
DB_TXN_NOSYNC 1
DB_TXN_WRITE_NOSYNC 1
I am not using a DB_CONFIG file at this time.
15) For the container config:
transactional true
transactionsNotDurable true
containertype wholedoc
indexNodes Off
pagesize 4096
16) In my little test program, I have a single container.
16.1) flags are the same as listed above.
16.2) I've tried with an empty container, and one with documents already inside and haven't noticed much difference at this point. I'm running 1, 2, 3, or 4 threads, each inserting 10k documents in a loop. Each insert is a single transaction.
16.3) Wholedoc (tried both node & wholedoc, I believe wholedoc was slightly faster).
16.4) The best performance I've seen is with a smaller document that is about 500 bytes.
16.5) I'm not currently using any document data.
17)sample document:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='no'?>
<Record xmlns='http://someurl.com/test' JID='UUID-f9032e9c-7e9a-4f2c-b40e-621b0e66c47f'>
<DataType>journal</DataType>
<RecordID>f9032e9c-7e9a-4f2c-b40e-621b0e66c47f</RecordID>
<Hostname>test.foo.com</Hostname>
<HostUUID>34c90268-57ba-4d4c-a602-bdb30251ec77</HostUUID>
<Timestamp>2011-11-10T04:09:55-05:00</Timestamp>
<ProcessID>0</ProcessID>
<User name='root'>0</User>
<SecurityLabel>unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023</SecurityLabel>
</Record>
18. As mentioned, I'm looked to get at least 10k documents per second for insertion. Updates are much more infrequent, and can run slower. I am not doing any partial updates, or replacing documents. In the actual system, there are minor updates that happen to document metadata, but again, these can be slower.
19. I'm primarily concerned with insertion rate, not query.
20. Xquery samples are not applicable at the moment.
21. I am using transactions, no special flags aside from setting them all to 'not durable'
22. Log files are currently stored on the same disk as the database.
23. I'm not using AUTO_COMMIT
24. I don't believe there are any non-transactional operations
25. best performance from 2 threads doing insertions
26. The primary way I've been testing performance is by using the 'clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME)' calls inside my test program. The test program spawns 1 or more threads, each thread inserts 10k documents. The main thread waits for all the threads to complete, then exits. I'm happy to send the source code for this program if that would be helpful.
27. As mentioned, I'm hoping to get at least 10k inserts per second.

Installation Problem in SAPNW7.0 with Oracle on RHEL5.4
Hi Everyone,
I am installing SAP NETWEAVER7.0 SR3 with ORACLE 10.2.0.4 on RHEL5.4 Operating System. I have installed the java
and i have install the ORACLE 10.2.0.4 Successfully. I set the environment variable in vi .bash_profile and i set the kernal parameters with their values in vi /etc/sysctl.conf file then run the command sysctl -p. Later i run the ./sapinst script the cd /NW7.0/
BS_Installation Master_2005/ IM_LINUX_x86_64. It went fine up to the 24th phase. At the 24th phase "start instance" i got the error.
The error message is
" ERROR 2010-10-10 12:03:03.542
CJS-20022 Could not start instance 'DVEBMGS00' of SAP system QAS"
I did try my level best to resolve it. Can any one tell me what could be the issue and how to resolve it.

Unable to startup 12c RAC database, can't open spfile in ASM
hello,
I'm testing 12cRAC database on RHEL5 and need your help to troubleshoot and fix the following issue -
DBCA fails at the end of the configuration to create and startup new RAC database with the following errors
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
ORA-01565: error in identifying file '+DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora'
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora
ORA-15056: additional error message
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfiletdb1.ora
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
I also tried executing script (which was created by DBCA) to create the new DB manually and got the same results - it happens during first attempt to start it up using SPFILE after new DB was successfully created (it was started up using pfile)
Clusterware with ASM install was successful, binaries were also installed without issues,
cluster seems healthy, I see correct files within ASM using asmcmd etc ..
got stuck here and need some directions ... very confused by ORA-01017 password error
wonder if anyone had same or similar issues ?
Thank you !Fixed.
Thank you everyone for suggestions and recommendations -
ASM is accessible using asmcmd and I can see all the DB files incuding spfile, they were created by DBCA, alert log showed same information I posted
After extensive troubleshooting and testing the issue was idedntified and fixed - 'dba' group needs to be the primary group for 'oracle' user, not the secondary one. I suspected that something was not right with 'oracle' user access to asm based on that strange password error. There is more I need to check as the issue and fix with swapping groups seems strange. Secondary group is not enough ti have proper rights ??? my first reaction was - seriously ? wtf ?
Anyway - I need to move one now ...
Thank you again ! -
Duplicate target database for standby failing with below error
Hello All, Need your assistance
We are creating a physical standby database (standalone) from 2 node RAC database, OS =RHEL5 and DB =11gR2
What we did: We took RMAN backup of primary DB along with archives and copied to standby server in same location. We have modified necessory prameters on primary as well as standby too.
The command we used :
RMAN>connect target sys/pwd@primary auxiliary sys/pwd@stdby
RMAN> run {
allocate auxiliary channel ch1 type disk;
duplicate target database for standby dorecover nofilenamecheck;
release channel ch1;
Note we tried : duplicate target database for standby as well as duplicate target database for standby nofilenamecheck methods too....But no luck..we are getting following error.
channel ch1: reading from backup piece /u01/BDB/BWFCCPRD_5fmpdvce_1_1
channel ch1: ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece /u01/BDB/BWFCCPRD_5fmpdvce_1_1

could you pease help to resolve this ....?
Note : Creating standby using RMAN 11g new feature : duplicate target database for standby from active database is not possible in our environment since the network bandwith is tooooo low, We have tried and not able to succeed because of n/w issue, So we are doing this alternate method...!!!
Looking for your valuable advises...

Can't mount oracle database on linux system
This is same as previous posting just added
e-mail and username info fo forum posting.
I am not able to mount an Oracle database.
I am new to Oracle and am working on an Oracle8i installation on an
Intel Linux Suse 6.3 platform. I am using only one harddrive and am
not using the 4 mount points as mentioned for efficiecy purposes in
the Oracle documentation..I am using the installation cd from Oracle8i
for Linux Starter Kit by Oracle Press. If anyone has this book they
can refer to pages 41-44 for the examples I followed.
As sysdba in sqplplus using the STARTUP command I can not Mount the
database -step 2 of the 3 stage process (Start, Mount and Open the
database) of opening an Oracle database.
I show the errors I encountered when I did the first 2 of the 3 steps
in the step-by-step mode (STARTUP NOMOUNT pfile=, ALTER DATABASE
MOUNT) in the sqlplus session and alert log respectively with startup
nomount and alter database mount for this sqlplus session.
Additionally I show the init.ora file lines referring to control file
which seem to be referred to by the sqlplus error messages and the
alert.log file. Perhaps some can give me some advice as what I can try
to fix this problem.
At the end of this e-mail I added several questions I had in regard to the control
files. Any help is appreciated.
Well, here are the sqlplus session results and its alert.log file:

init.ora control files
# define two control files by default
control_files = (ora_control1, ora_control2)
Here are my control file questions:
I need to know several points:
1) What are control files susposed to
contain and how would I recognize them?
I used the
unix find /usr/oracle \*ctl* -print
command to locate files with a ctl extension.
This resulted in about a dozen such files in
different directories as shown below:
./bin/lsnrctl
./bin/extractlib
./bin/agtctl
./bin/oidctl
./bin/lsnrctl0
./bin/agtctlO
./rdbms/demo/ulcase1.ctl
./rdbms/demo/ulcase10.ctl

2) On page 100 in the book Oracle 8i A Beginners's
by Oracle Press mention is made of a
CREATE CONTROLFILE command that can under
circumstances be used to re-create a control-file.
but that is all that is said about it. Perhaps
you might know something more about it.
3) Would you recommend any good text for
Oracle DBA's, especially for the problem of the sort
that I am encountering?
[email protected]
nullIt's probably not supported on RHEL5/Centos5/etc., but...
You can get the installer to function using the following steps:
- extract the cal_linux_*.tar.gz, and cd into the OracleCalendar_inst directory
In there is the actual installer, cal_linux.
- the cal_linux is shell script wrapped around some binary blobs. The installer's
problem is that Oracle is setting the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 environment
variable, which is a mistake on RHEL5. You need to make it not set that variable,
but you need to do so in a way that the size of the shell script does not change at all,
and none of the binary blobs are impacted.
- the approach I took was
mv cal_linux cal_linux.BAK
sed -e 's/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL= /g' < cal_linux.BAK > cal_linux
chmod a+rx cal_linux
cal_linux -i gui
Note: you must have exactly 5 spaces in the substitution part of the sed command, because you're replacing 5 characters (2.2.5), and the size of the shell script must not change.
If you do that, the installer should run (one warning from awk still) and you should be able to install the product.

How can i generate a large SCN for database
Hi,
On databases where SCN number is larger that 2^32 , my application seems to work in a weird way. Am trying to get this re produced in my test setup , but am unable to pump up the SCN number to such a large value.
I am trying this on RHEL5-64 bit and WIN2003-64 bit with Oracle 11gR2 using a script which does some table creation , deletion etc.
Does any one know any method to increase the SCN value ? This would be of great help.
--AmithSimply selecting a row from v$database, in a loop, will increase the current SCN. Don't ask me why this happens as I do not have an answer for the same.
SQL> select current_scn from v$database;
CURRENT_SCN
2944216219
1 row selected.
SQL> select current_scn from v$database;
CURRENT_SCN
2944216221
1 row selected.
SQL> select current_scn from v$database;
CURRENT_SCN
2944216222
1 row selected.
