Database report generation?

Anyone know of any good java-based database report generation tools that would work in a JSC created application? I'd like both web reporting and print capabilities.

I haven't used any report generation tool with Creator. But I have seen users reporting about using Jasper Reports and JReports along with Creator in this forum.

Exe build with database conn and report generation vi's?

I tried to build an .exe and learned the hard way that there are many things needed to be included for this to work. As is now my program is not working.
I wanted to get a list of necessary steps to make a successful build. Please correct me if I am wrong or missing anything:
1. For the report generation toolkit I must include a few support files (_exclsub.llb and _wordsub.llb)
2. For the database connectivity: I must follow NI's User guide by implementing the toolset build script function? Is there an easier way?
If there are any simpler ways to get this working please let me know.

Yes I have the runtime installed. I also got the program working correctly by doing the following:
LV 8.6 and greater-->
1. added two folders to the project from the project explorer menu.
      a. Utilities folder
      b. LVClass folder
2. during the .exe build I had to:
      a. add LVClass folder to always include in source file settings
      b. browse in the Utilities folder to NIReportLLB folder and add that to always include as mentioned above (note: if you add the whole utilities folder you will get a broken vi error when building it, even if you fix the vi it still didn't work properly for me so I just included the folder I needed for word/excel)
took about a day to troubleshoot and fix but the program is working as expected. Hope this helps someone else in the future.

LabView database connectivity toolkit 1.0.1 compatibility with MS-ACCESS 2010 / Labview report generation toolkit for Office 1.1.3 compatibility with Office 2010

In the very near future we will be forced to upgrade to Office 2010 Company wide and I am a little concerned with some of our older test platforms that have applications built in LabView 8.2.1. These applications save data to MS-ACCESS 2000 databases using the LabView database connectivity toolkit 1.0.1. Office 2003 is also loaded on these test platforms with all test reports generated using the LabView report generation toolkit for Office 1.1.3.
I have not gotten my hands on a copy of Office 2010 yet to see if there will be any compatibility issues. Does anyone have any experience in this area?

The MS-Access part is fairly well isolated through the ADO interface LabVIEW uses. The only possible problems there IMHO are difficulties with possible Acess compatibilities itself such as an example, SQL statement you may have invoked directly through the ADO interface. Maybe you did use a depreciated command back then that has since been removed. As long as the only thing you do are simple INSERT and SELECT statements only, I would expect it to just keep working.
The Report Generation interface is a different beast. Microsoft manages to change the Automation interface with every version of office in a way that strongly binding applications like LabVIEW break on. There is no good way around that except not changing those methods, but that is a cause that has been lost already. You will certainly have to verify the version dependant Report Generation API VIs to still work with Office 2010 and most likely you will have to make some changes to those VIs to make them work again with the modified ActiveX interface of Office 2010. Note, that I have no experience with porting report generation to Office 2010 but I have had some headaches from porting that between Office 97, 2000, 2003, and 2007.

Error in report generation-Load report failed

I have installed crystal reports for VS2005 runtime in my live environment.When i try to load the report file from a .Net page i am getting the error'Error in Report generation-Load report failed'.
This works fine in development and testing but when moved to production we are having issues.
I believe i have a workaround i.e i need to open the rpt in a VS 2005 environment and re-write the connection string again.This fix had worked in development and testing when we had the same issue.
But not sure if this is a known issue with crystal reports and if so do we have any hot fixes for the same.

The reason why i posted the item on 'data Connectivity issues' is because i suspect the problem is with the connection string.Though i had provided the correct connection string,re-writing the connection string with the same info might help to fix the issue with loading the report.
Does it mean that there is a problem in the connectivity?
I have a risk here that i cant re-write the connection string..i.e to open the RPT file in VS2005 and bind it.The production web server & database server sits in a third party environment and it is not in the company network.So i cant connect to this server to re-write from any other severs in the network.
Is there any fix which can applied to the server to get this issue resolved?

I just received instructions from the TMG software company to uninstall and install the PDF driver they use. This fixed the problem. Apparently upgrading to v7.01 damages the driver but reinstalling it corrects the problem.

Hello!
I need to install the Report Generation Toolkit, but only using Excel 2007.
Is this possible? Or will we need to install a full Office suite? Is there a way to workaround full install?
We'll only be using Excel anyway...

Hey Oley,
I have been doing a bit of research and what I found is that there was a corruption in the Windows Installer database. You can use the "Windows Installer Clean Up Utility" downloaded from Microsoft to remove ALL traces of Office, and then reinstall. This should solve the problem. I found this in another discussion forum with someone else with a very similar issue. I hope this helps!

Report Generation working on Dev machine but not on Deployment + Lessons learned

I don't do deployments very often with Teststand. But I have to say, I learned a lot from this one from trial and error and help from the message board. I have got my deployment to final work (almost) with these lessons learned:
1. Create a base installer for the engines and drivers, that way if you need to update it is much smaller.
2. Dont install Teststand before Labview on a new development machine (not related to this deployment but I did learn that)
3. Don't have your Testexec window open, alter the Station Globals, then close the window. It just puts them back to the old version (probably my biggest problem).
4. Paths are extemely important.
I think I have figured it out with much time involved and kept notes of what I have done for future. The ONLY issue I have left is this below. My dev machine works as it should but when I deploy, it does not. FYI- I manually copied over Station Globals, Process model, and Testexec. DO I need something else?
I create serial numbers for my UUT's in the proceses model. It all works fine in development. The serial numbers are generated and the UUT filename is titled [023232232].txt and changes per unit. The path for example lets say is C:\Users\Ryan\Desktop\temp. A logfile is generated for each and put in that folder.
When I deploy, it does something different. Instead of putting the files into the temp folder, it errors out saying it is in use. If I delete the temp folder, it creates a file called "temp" which contains my text logfile. This file just keeps getting overwritten.
Any ideas on this?

One way you can ensure that the Report Options you want to have stay with your sequence file is to actually override them using a Sequence File Callback. I have attached a link to a KnowledgeBase article that walks you through how to add the ReportOptions callback to your sequence and programmatically set the options that you would normally set by going to Configure»Report Options from the Sequence Editor.
Also, to ensure that the correct Process Model is being used with your sequence file after distributing, you can set the Process Model within the Sequence File Properties. This can be found by going to Edit»Sequence File Properties, and then going to the Advanced tab. I have attached a screenshot of this window below, as well. From here, you can set the Model Option to Require Specific Model, which especially comes in handy if you are using your own custom Process Models.

800706BA RPC server unavailable in Report Generation toolkit

Hi all,
I've got a problem with LabVIEW 7.1.1 and Report Generation Toolkit (RGTK).RGTK is used to connect to MS-Word, create a new document from template and report test results. Works like a charme when stying local on the respective test machine.
LabVIEWs 'Automation Open' node as wella as other parts of the RGTK have an control 'machine name' so I suspected I could bring a report server into game. Tried it and get an error "0x800706BA - The RPC server is unavailable in myTestVI" (translated from German Windows error).
All the required subVIs to create a document have been put into a small test app. This one runs fine when running on the desired report server, but fail when opened and run on the devellopment machine.
I have searched extensively for that error code and have changed some port settings in the firewalls and some services settings with no success. Can anyone help me out?
BTW, on the remote machine a new process named WINWORD is started, but nothing more.

The error 0x800706BA is, as you said, a windows error (and, btw, your translation was correct as the original title is "The RPC server is unavailable").

I want to expand LabVIEW's reporting capabilities. Can someone tell me what the difference is between DIAdem and the LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office.

There are several major differences between the two solutions. I'll try and outline them as good as I can ...
The biggest different is that LabVIEW and its toolkits are programming tools and DIAdem is a ready to run application.
The LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit basically provides an extensive library of VIs that allow you to connect LabVIEW to the MS Office library and create and edit reports in Word and Excel.
DIAdem is a stand alone application that was designed to post-process data from various sources. The tools included in DIAdem are:
1. NAVIGATOR: Allows you to import data from files (ASCII, binary, Excel, etc.) as well as DataBases (SQL/ODBC, Citadel, ASAM, etc.). The unique DataPlugin technology available within DIAdem allows you to import vitually and data file by creating a DataPlugin that describes the data format and gets linked to DIAdem. 2. VIEW: Graphical and Numerical data inspection tool. Use cursors to zoom and scroll through your data, edit your data graphically and numerically and compare different tests.

Dynamic crystal report generation - issues with column headings

I'm trying to generate a crystal report dynamically based on a "result set" data(Query: select REPORT_ID, REPORT_NAME, REPORT_DESC, RPT_FILE_NAME, LOCATION from IRS_REPORT_DETAILS). I'm able to generate the report run time, But the report is without columns heads. I would like to include the column headings as well. 
I searched the API(RAS) and found that there is a 'add(java.lang.String fieldName, java.lang.String headingText) " method present in "ReportObjectController" using which we can add the headings.

Here you are getting the first field in the array. This may not be the field you want to add since we aren't sure how the arrays are ordered when retrieving fields from the report. It is better to retrieve the fields with the findObjectByName method, thus ensuring you are retrieving the field you want to add to your heading.

Decimal delimiter and excel report generation

Hello,
I've a problem with the "Report Generation Toolkit" while trying to generate reports in MS Excel.
I first select data from an Access database table. Although the database table contains information
in string-format as well as numbers, in the first instance it'll be passed as an array of strings to the
report generation vi's (generate easy table).
While my computer's region settings (WinXP) are always set to german standard I now get different
results if I on the one hand try to generate a report table in Word-format (Word Easy Table) and
on the other hand a report in Excel-format (Excel Easy Table).
While all numbers are displayed correctly within the Word-table, they aren't within the Excel-table.
Thereby (Excel-table) the numbers are converted falsely as shown below:
0,12345 -> 0,12345 (values < 1 are displayed correctly)
1,2345 -> 12.345 (false)
In my opinion there's a problem with the decimal delimiter. Does anybody have an idea of how to maybe
modify this way of working only within my application without changing my computer's region settings?

On the one hand you can configure LabView to either use the localized decimal point or not (Menu Tools-->Options->Frontpanel->Use localized decimal point), on the other hand you can format singlse strings either with or without using the localized decimal point. The VI "format sting.vi" can use the format-sting %.; or %,; to define the decimal point. (Just make a double-left click on the VI to start the format-string editor for help).

Print number of pages with Report Generation toolkit

I use the report generation toolkit and the Print Report.vi to print a table and some text extracted from a MS Access database. The result of this is a print out that takes up several pages.
Now, on each page i want something like (Page x of y), and I do not want to buy more expensive NI packages for this simple thing. I know it should be possible since the Report Express vi can do it --- which for me is a useless vi.
I do not consider it a nice solution to try and keep track of the number of pages myself by dividing the table into more tables and use the new page vi between each "page table". This I would not like to do since depending on paper size, font size, and length of text strings in each cell this will be virtually impossible.
By moving into the Print Report.vi I've tried to see if I somehow can extract the info --- I've not found anything usefull but expect a workaround to possible.
Any suggestions?

Hi Skinny,
There are some tokens you can use in the headers and footers of Standard Reports generated by the Report Generation VIs. If you take a look at [LabVIEW]\examples\reports\TextReportExample.llb\Text Report Example.vi, you'll see that the right footer text of the report has the token <pagenofm>, which generates a footer of the form "1 of 10", to indicate page 1 out of 10 pages. There's also another tag you can use, <page>, that just lists the page number itself without a total number of pages. If you look at the help for the Set Report Header Text.vi or Set Report Footer Text.vi, you'll see a link in the help for all the different "tokens" you can use with the report header and footer. Actually, now that I think about it, you can use these tokens anywhere in the report, including the body text.

I am developing a website using jsp on tomcat.The site required a number of online report generation option from database(mysql).
My problem is-
1.how to generate different types of report other than simple html tag embedded within jsp .
2.How to store all those reports in a file(.txt or .doc).
N.B I dont want to use any reporting tool.

The program I'm working on has to create a test report. I use an Office-XP word document, provided by my client, as pattern for this report, in which strings, tables and graphs from my program are to be inserted.
My program is made using LabWindows/CVI 7.0. For the test process and report generation I plan to use TestStand 3.0.
My question now is, if and how it is possible, to realize such a custom report in TestStand 3.0?
(I've already learned that all TestStand sequences and process models can be modified to match my individual needs, but the steps in the report generation sequences are a bit cryptic and I can't find any manuals covering this topic in detail.)

There is no extra documentation detailing the breakdown of the TestStand report generation, other than the highlevel detail of the different callbacks for the Header, footer and body of the report as found in the Teststand manuals.
But, the flow the the report sequencefile is fairly straight forward, once you are familier to the component parts of the a step.
The easies way to help the understanding is to single step through an small example and watch some of the variables.
Where most of the work is done is the sequence PutOneResultInReport found in the sequencefile reportgen_[xml|html|txt].seq. (note there's a different report generation sequencefile for xml, html and txt.)
For simple modification to the report you make use of the Callback overrides and
there's one for the Header part, one for the Footer and another for the Body.
There is an example in the TS3.0 manual using the Header callback.
If you are making big changes to the report then you will need to change the actual report sequencefile.
Alternatively,
you could try Www.emodularsolutions.com, they have produced a Report Generation package called DocFlex.
Or
Log your results to a database and then use some external package to pull the information and package to a defined stlye sheet. I am sure there are software package that will do this.

A trigger is designed to be a part of a transaction, not it's end.
It is like following these steps (not really accurate, but should give an idea):
1. programA issues INSERT statement on tableA
2. 'control' goes over to the database
3. constraint checks happen
4. the associated triggers on tableA do their work (e.g. fetching a sequence value for a primary key)
5. 'control' goes back to programA
6. programA decides if a commit (no error occurred) or a rollback (error case) has to be issued.
