Database Space Available is Large

I have been testing the rebuild of many fragmented indexes on my database. The rebuild process went well, but after it finished, I found more than 55% space available in the mdf file. I already took full and log backups. Then, I shrank the log file. Before
rebuilding indexes, large portions of data had been removed (almost 26 million records). Should I shrink the database to reduce its size? or this will lead to index fragmentation.
Thanks in advance
Ghada M. Ahmad

Should I shrink the database to reduce its size? or this will lead to
index fragmentation.
Yes, database shrink will cause index fragmentation again, so if you are not low on disk space avaoid it to shrink a database.

  • Database File Space Available (%) alert for sysft_ Catalog_Name

    Hi,
i'm monitoring some SQL Server environments by Grid Control 10.2.0.5 and plug-in for SQL Server 4.0.3.1.0.
I have received some alerts sent from Database File Space Available (%) metric about lack of space for the sysft_<Catalog_Name> datafile, but i can't manage it by Microsoft SQL Management Studio.. or not?
Can someone give me a suggestion to resolve this issue?
    Thanks
    SBI

    Hi SBI,
From the EMGC Console, go to the SQLServer plugin homepage and click on "Metrics and Policy Settings" under the related links section of the page. Next click on the edit column (3 pencils) for the Metric "Database File Space Available (%)". This will take you to the Edit Advanced Settings page where you can specify what database files should be examined for this metric and what thresholds should be set for that particular file.

  • SQL Server Plug-in reports inaccurate Database Space information

I'm trying to track down some inaccuracies I'm seeing in the SQL Server Plug-in for Grid Control. Every database I have on my Database Instance has a Critical alert regarding the Space Available %. For my example, we'll take the 'master' database. it is showing as .81% Space available. My guess is that the plug-in uses the sp_spaceused procedure to get the information. When I run that, I get the following:
    database_name: master
database_size: 72.00 MB (This is the size of the database file and the transaction log, 64M + 8M)
    unallocated space: 61.34 MB
    reserved: 2728 KB
    data: 1072 KB
    index_size: 1056 KB
unused: 600 KB (Total amount of space reserved for objname but no yet used.)
If you take 600 KB/72MB , you get the .081% available. However, that is not accurate. (I've verified both numbers in the OMS mgmt$metric_hourly view).
I don't think the plug-in's use of the unused value is correct. This is space allocated to objects in the database, but available. I wonder if this metric should be looking at the unallocated_space/database_size rather than the unused piece. This would show this database to have 85.2% available space.
The flaw I see in sp_spaceused is that it is taking into account the database and transaction log as a single unit. Rather than separate entities.

This is erroneous behaviour by the SQL Server plug-in. Please refer to bug 7186134. The bug is planned to be addressed with the newer version of plug-in to be released as part of Plug-in Release Cycle 9 (due for RTM in Dec. '08)

  • "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" - uploading files problem

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running a late-2012 27 inch iMac - 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with the 3TB fusion drive, OS 10.8.4. At present there is 1.92TB of available storage.
I have received this message "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" just before a full on crash multiple times in the past couple of days whilst using WeTransfer to send over some large files (500MB+). The applications I have had open at the time have been: Activity Monitor, App Store, Firefox, and Finder. Over the course of uploading the files, the active system memory has gone from 1.04GB and steadily increased until it more or less maxes out around 29GB, at which point the Page Outs rocket up to around 40GB/s and the swap memory fills up pretty quickly until the computer basically can't take any more and blacks out.
This is a pretty new thing, haven't really had an issues before. My main software used: Sibelius 7 & Logic Pro X. I've also recently started working with Final Cut Pro X, which seems to have been struggling at points. I've tried closing everything, restarting the computer and not opening anything (specifically NOT FCPX) before attempting an upload. I've even gone so far as to remove FCPX from my system, and yet the problem is still recurring. Both "kernal_task" and "WindowServer" have been running high on CPU when these problems have occurred.
Does anyone know what might be the issue and how it could possibly be resolved?
Really appreciate any help, I'm in the middle of a fairly sizeable project and the deadlines are just around the corner.
    Thanks,
    Tom

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory

This message pops up when running the system for some time a day or 2. Full message
"Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using, Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."

    2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Dou
    Memery 4 GB 1067MHz

This answers both of your questions. The computer needs some hard drive space for swap files and for storing other information while the computer runs. You are getting a warning that there is limited hard drive space that is affecting the ability of the computer to run correctly. Note, that your hard drive it not completely full. It that where so, you would be seeing really weird behaviors and likely applications would be crashing right and left. If nothing is done to remedy the situation, you will likely start to see weird behaviors and unexpected crashes.
Time for some clean up. Perhaps, there are some old files that can be trashed. Perhaps there are some old files that you want to save but don't use that often. Do you need instant access to old iMovie and iDVD projects? They take up a lot of space. These seldom used files could be moved to a secondary hard drive.
Also, use a product like OmniSweeper by Omnigroup; It will help to find folders/files that are large. It helps me to find those "Ah-ha" files. Those are the large files that I forgot I had on my hard drives that I don't need anymore yet are using GB of space. BTW, OmniSweeper is free!
Best of luck in cleaning up.

  • Mac os x startup disk has no more space available for application memory

Suddenly over the past 2-3 weeks, first my iMac, then my Mac Pro both started giving me the pop-up error message: "Your mac os x startup disk has no more space available for application memory" offering for me to Force Quit open applications. Which does not work. Restarting temporarily helps, but the error will eventually return.
I have over 50% available in HD space on the iMac.
Also, I do not know if this is related, but the computers are running very slowly as well.
Additionally, before all of this, our Contact data, sync with Mobile Me, tripled in size with duplicates and jumbled messages.
Seemed like a cascade of failures beginning with contacts and ending with the memory error.
I have tried Applejack several times to no avail.
Any one have any ideas? Thanks.

From the HD, but not from from install disk. I will dig it out and try it.
Did you run Apple's Hardware Test?
    Where do I find this?
Did you disconnect all peripherals except for the keyboard & mice while troubleshooting?
I did not since I am having the same problem on 2 different computers.

  • Database space

    Hi Gurus,
My client had never used LO cockpit before. I am activating the extract structures for MM. I am aware that filling up lot of set up tables and subsequent process may require lot of database space in the production server. I dont know how big the database is now.
Can someone please guide me regarding this. Whether i need to ask my DBA team to increase the DB memory both in the BW and R/3 production server. I f you have figures of the space it may be of lot of help. Data may run into few million records ( around 10 million).
    thanks in advacne
    regards
    satish

    Dear Satish,
You can check the database size and the available space size of a certain SAP system in transaction DB02. If you furthermore select "Object Details" (this is the name in NetWeaver 7.0, in NetWeaver 2004 it is slightly different, as far as I remember) you should be able to check the size of the R/3 tables which you are going to extract.
SE11 could be helpful, too. This transaction tells you which length the table records have. If you multiply the value with the number of records you want to extract, you will get a first impression regarding the space size that will be needed.
I hope that these hints help to answer your question.
    Kind regards,
    Stefan

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • How to improve BW database space

    Hi, all
I have encountered an issue about BW database space in BW development instance, when I extract data from R3, there is no enough space for uploading the data.
however, I need check BW report with R3 immediately, I'll be very appreciated if anyone can help me.
Furthermore, I have deleted many PSA data loads.
    thanks in advance!

Here are some other things that you can do, or have done, to help:
    1) Delete Change Logs that are more than 21 days old (or some other aging).
    2) Have your Basis DBAs do a reorg on the underlying tables for larger DSOs.
    3) Run compression on larger InfoCubes.
    4) Archive data that is older than two years (or some other aging).
There are other things you can look at, but will take more time to complete. For example, if you're using the 0EC_PCA_3 DataSource for extracting PCA details, it extracts 3 records (one per currency type - transaction, local and operating concern) for each row of data that's in R3/ECC. Instead of using that DataSource, one could create a generic DataSource based on Function Module to pull 1 record for each record in the table, significantly reducing the amount of data (requires some other actions on the reporting end though so that users can choose which currency they want to report in).

  • HT1758 Mac OSX has no more space available for memory

Getting message:  Mac OSX start up disk has no more space available for memory.  Remove files from startup disk.
How do I solve this problem?

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    RSA5, select  too much DataSource.
got runtime error when replicate DataSource. How can I change this situation without change SAP basis parameters?

Weird issue and dont know if this is a bad SSD or just a bug in Lion BUT I have an i7 18 ghz 2011 macbook air with 256GB SSD. Now the issue is if i click on "Macintosh HD" and press command +I i get a one number, later i go into disk utility and it says a whole different number (space available). I deal with large files for video and im always deleting some and adding others. I reformatted twice and had everything re-installed, but after a few days of usage the symptoms come back. Anyone experiencing this issues? can it be a hardware issue or a bug in Lion? I called support, but they told me is out of my 90 days and i live way too far from an apple store.
    see the picture below.
Disk Utility says 69GB free, while the Finder says 199GB free? that is a HUGE difference.

  • Time Machine not recognizing full space available on NAS.

I recently purchsed and set up an Iomega Storcenter ix4-200d NAS with Time Machine support.  The NAS has 8 TB storage total, with ~4.6 TB available.
I have TIme Machine support turned on in the Storcenter, assigned to a folder called "Time-Machine."  In my OSX Time Machine preferences, I select the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS as the back-up disk, and my Mac connects to it just fine.
The challenge is Time Machine returns an error saying there isn't enough space on the backup disk to complete the backup.
For some reason, Time Machine is only recognizing 536.36 GB of space available on the backup disk, even though there are ~4.6 TB available.  I tried manually moving my iTunes media folder (~700 GB) to the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS to see if the Iomega NAS was arbitrarily setting a max size to a Time Machine folder.  I was able to manually move just under 1 TB of data to the same "Time-Machine" folder that Time Machine says only has 536.36 GB of space.
I tried deleting the Time-Machine store on my NAS, turning Time Machine support off, then turning it back off and creating a new "Time-Machine" folder.  I did this several times and still get the same behavior.
I even tried running Time Machine piecemeal, excluding larger folders at first and running a back-up, to see if maybe Time Machine wasn't liking that large of an initial backup.  This worked, and then I gradually removed some exclusions and ran back-ups again, so each back-up size was never more than 200 GBs or so.  However, after several back-ups, I received the same error message saying there wasn't enough space on the backup disk when the total sparsbundle size reached 536.36 GBs.
Since I can manually move more than 536.36 GB of data to the backup disk, I'm guessing it must be something with Time Machine not recognizing the full space available on the NAS.
Any ideas?  Has anyone seen this before?

    Hello,
not that it helps, but I see the same on the exact same configuration. My message is also about not having enough space, ip-to exactly the same amount of room being available (only 536.36 GB available)?
I tried everything, including a full reset of the StorCenter, but to no avail. The timemachine backup used to work, however I thought that this was just because it didn't exceed the limit of one physical disk in the StorCenter (I've got 4 x 1 TB).
What is strange is that the original author has 2TB disks and still has the same problem? So it likely isn't related to the physical disk size. It seems like the maximum backup can only be 536.36 GB ??
