Database Views and Master-Detail using ADF
How would I create a master-detail form using a database view for the search-able master table and a database view as the detail table?
The detail-view will need to be update-able (adf-table) using an instead-of trigger to perform the updates to the database table.
Thanks in advance...
There are several sections in the ADF Developer's Guide about using views (http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/jdev/b25947_01/index.html):
- 26.4 Basing an Entity Object on a PL/SQL Package API
- 6.2.4 Creating an Entity Object for a Synonym or View
You can also try Steve Muench's web log: http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2004/09/23/notYetDocumentedAdfSampleApplications.html
There are at least two (old) items there that involve view with instead-off triggers:
- Composite Entity Using Stored Procedure API to Create/Modify/Remove Master and Children
- Entity Object Based on View With Instead Of Triggers Avoiding Returning Into Clause

Refresh problem by combination of programmatic view and master-detail page
I am using the latest versions of both ADF (10.1.3.2.0.4066) and JHeadstart (10.1.3.1.26) and I have an application with 1 page in which I have as root page a programmatic view (table-form) which I fill with request parameters.
Under that programmatic view I have a master (table) with 3 detail pages (table).
The programmatic view is populated with always 1 row, which goes always correct.
The problem is occuring when iterating through the first entity based master table which contains lots of rows. Then the problem is that when you navigate through the master table the detail pages are refreshed correctly, but when you navigate back to the first row that row won't get updated.
The next thing I tried is create a new jheadstart application with only the master-detail pages (entity based), so without the programmatic view, and then the iterating through the master table and the refresh of the child tables is working correct.
What can be the problem here.Have you tested this in the ADF Business Components Browser? That's the tester that you can find by right-clicking your ADF BC Application Module and choosing Test. If you go to the View Object instance for the programmatic view, and using the ViewLinks to its children, do you get the same behavior as in the JHeadstart application?
kind regards,

EAV modelling approach on database tables and how to use it in Forms Dvl
Hello,
I am dealing with two tables in data modell which are structured on EAV ( Entity-Attribute-Value ) modelling approach.
Survey( Survey# number not null,
Start_Date_Of_Survey date not null ,
End_Date_Of_Survey date null,
Sts_Of_Survey varchar2( 4 ) not null ,
Contractor_Partner# number not null, -- reference foreign key, to Partner's Table
Survey_Report CLOB ) ;
Survey# primary key of Survey.
Meta_Survey_Parameter_Register( Parameter# varchar2( 40 ) not null,
Additional_Parameter_Desc varchar2( 240 ) null,
Type_Of_Value varchar2( 60 ) not null,
Data_Type varchar2( 10 ) not null,
Unit varchar2( 10 ) null,
High_Value varchar2( 20 ) null,
Low_Value varchar2( 20 ) null );
Type_Of_Value Is restricted to : ATOMIC_VALUE, INTERVAL_VALUE_FROM_TO
Data_Type is restricted to: Date, time, number( X,Y ), varchar2,
Unit is varchar2 value not resstricted: for example: %, kg as kilo, m as meter, m/s as meter per second, null
This table is meta table so it suppose to be used as some register - static part of the schema.
Then I have table which attaches Parameters to the Survey as the association table
Survey_Parameters( Survey#, Parameter#, Value, Comment );
Primary key( Survey#, Parameter# );
I need to implement this in Forms and Reports.
My question is how to implement it to maximally make good use of Oracle forms 10g or 11g features and Oracle Reports 10g:
a) when fulfilling the survey and use of parsing rules supplied in Meta_Survey_Parameter_Register
b) at the producing as the survey report with reports
c) in data analyisis in data warehouse impementations.Hello Craig,
Thank you Craig for your answer.
I must confess that I am also not familiar with EAV theoretical background and concept. Till recently I even did not know that this kind of problem could be placed
in theoretical background called EAV. This put smile nad releive on my mind. Because since this moment I do not feel this kind of problem as some exception or
some exceptional tools or data design ( object modelling and object databases ) suppose to be used. This way I can still counted on concepts in RDBMS databases
and applications. Well I guess so.
Let me comment and answer on your text between your lines.
I am only conceptually familiar with EAV modeling, so I don't claim to be an expert! ;-) Given the abstract way in which data is stored with EAV, I would suggest that you first create a SQL Query that will produce the desired record set.
Ok. But I guess you have in mind to transform vertical set of values to horizontal ( pivoting, transposing )?
View has cast operator that transform data type of each parameter from general ( e.g. varchar2 ) to the one that is registered in the
Meta_Parameter_Register. This way it is provided to get the survey with the list of assigned parameters in horizontal shape?
Once you have this, you can either use the Query as the source of a Database View and then base your Forms data block on this view or you can use the query in a Procedure and base your Forms data block on the procedure or lastely, you could use the query directly and base your Forms data block on the query using the "From Clause" option.
Ok, I think I understand it.
So When I have horizontal list there is challenge during
- insert
- delete
- update
operations how to handle these operations to transform to vertical operation.
This could only be done with Forms data block based on procedure and instead of triggers?
The simplest option would be to create a DB view and base your block on the view. You will not be able to update the data however. If you need to be able to change or add new data, I would suggest you use a Procedure based block. Take a look at these links for additional information on using Procedure and From Clause based blocks.
Ok Craig, sounds like it makes sense.
IT seems your suggestion is caling for some simpler example with the same characteristic of the problem.
Like two tables:
Master( Master#, ..... )
Detail( Master#, Detail#, value_low_or_just_value, value_high, data_type )
Forms: How to base a block on a FROM clause Query
Forms: How to base a data block on a Procedure
Ok,
Hope this helps,
I see your point and it makes sense , it is only the challenge to see how much of flexibility I can reach and how cheap workarounds are to preserve
the level of flexibility in the tools that are not naturally supporting EAV ( like forms and reports ).
If someone's response is helpful or correct, please mark it accordingly.
Sure...
We are on the line.
I am sure there is someone else in the community that experienced this kind of challenge. -
Database View do not refresh in ADF application
Greetings,
im facing a weird problem in my application (JDeveloper 11.1.2.4.0 - ADF). All this time i was working directly with tables (VO), but now i also started using database views.
Everything works fine, when i add a new row in a table that my Database Views is associated with, it refresh properly.
BUT if i delete rows manually from my database, the View do not refresh in my application, not by refreshing the page,
redeploying application, even executing the view object query inside the view object. The only way for the DB View to be
refresh inside the JDeveloper and on deployment time is by restart JDeveloper. I try adding an action on my OV to re-execute them when
i do something specifically, hopefully the will reset the cache and retrieve the DB view again, but with no luck..
Correction: now it doesnt even refresh on restart jdeveloper.
Just for the clarification, im talking about Database Views, and not just Object Views. I create a Object View inside the application to retrieve the data
from the Database View results.
Can you help me on this please?Yes the queries in SQLDeveloper was showing me correct results.
But i feel disappointed.. When i went to close SQLDeveloper to try something, it pop me a message to commit/rollback changes.
After i commit them, my app show correct results too. -
Many - to - many view links (master-detail)
Case :
I have a relation many-to-many between two tables, composed of 3 tables:
Table Users ( User_Id, User_name ) // Master 1
Table Groups ( Group_Id, Group_name ) // Master 2
Table Users_Groups ( User_Id, Group_Id ) // Child (holding then many - many relation)
Need :
I want to make Master-detail relation, so that when I change the group (Master 2) the details of the users - user_id, user_name - in this group appear in table below.
problem :
All the master-detail examples I have seen in Jdeveleoper, between One - many realtionship, where the details table contain the information to be displayed; now my case that the details to be displayed is in another table (Master 1) not in the child table directly.
So using ordinary view Link between the a master table and the child table displayes only the Id's of the child table but I need that the names that in (Master 1) table which is related to the selected master id.
ThankxDuplicate of add where clause to detail view in master/detail relation

Displaying Master-Data using ADF DI
Hi
I'm trying to display a master data(as a form) and a detail data(as a table) in excel sheet using ADF DI.
The process I followed is as below.
1. This is on HR schema. I created a departmentsVO, and dragged Departments from the data control to the top half of a jspx page as a form, and Employees datacontrol that is wihtin the Departments datacontrol into the lower half of the page.
2. I ran the page, and the master-detail is perfect i.e., when i click navigate the departments form, corresponding employees of that department are coming in a table in the lower half.
But the problem is when i used this pagedef file to use in an excel file.
1. Alll form elements are available in the excel as individual components. Table is available as a tree component.
2. I binded all the form elements in the excel, also bound prev and next buttons, all at the top section of the excel file.
3. Binded the table component in the bottom of the excel file.
3. Defined table download action and Worksheet downsync action as worksheet properties. Workbook prop are also defined properly.
When I ran the page,
Form elements and table is prefilled, navigation of form is also working fine. But when I navigate through the form, the corresponding employees are not changing, they are all employees of the first department id.
My requirement is to change the employee table as the department form is being navigated.
Can someone pls give some suggestions. What i think I may be missing is that the table is not getting refreshed as I navigate the form(But I already associated the table download action to the worksheet properties).
Thanks in advance,
Ravi.Found a solution. This might be helpful to others...so m posting it :-)
While binding the 'Next' button, I added 'Download' component action of the table to the actionset of the button(which already has UpSycn, Next, DownSync).
So, on click on the button, it actually downloads the latest data to the table. And master - details were shown just perfectly :-) -
Implmenting Master Detail using dropdown box
I am getting an exception when using a dropdown box and datatable to implement Master/Detail using the Pointbase db. I followed the directions provided in the tutorial, "Using Databound Components to Access Databases". I also used the code snipets suggested in this section. I have included a copy of the exception handler information.[

org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve.invoke(SI have a dropDownBox which has a database table containing artist names attached to it. I accomplished this by dragging the artist table onto the dropDownBox.
I created a dataTable and dragged the table, Inventory, that contains a list of all the prints for an artist. The primary key for this table is the stock number, The primary key for the artist table is the artist code.
I would like to be able to select an artist from the dropDownBox and have only the fineart related to that artist displayed in the dataTable.
I followed the example in the tutorial, but its not working. I noticed that the way the master/detail relationship is done in the Application Model is totally different. I am new to java and web programming, so the way it was done in the application model I don't understand enough to replicate.
If you look at my original post, I provided the error messages and a copy of my code. This application is a school project which needs to be turned in by Tuesday of this coming week, I would appreciate any help. Thanks. -
Difference among the Help view,Database view and Maintanance View
hi,
can Anyone pls let me know the Difference among the Help view,Database view and Maintanance View
thanks®ards
ramaThe followings are different types of views:
Database View (SE11)
Database views are implement an inner join, that is, only records of the primary table (selected via the join operation) for which the corresponding records of the secondary tables also exist are fetched. Inconsistencies between primary and secondary table could, therefore, lead to a reduced selection set.
In database views, the join conditions can be formulated using equality relationships between any base fields. In the other types of view, they must be taken from existing foreign keys. That is, tables can only be collected in a maintenance or help view if they are linked to one another via foreign keys.
Help View ( SE54)
Help views are used to output additional information when the online help system is called.
When the F4 button is pressed for a screen field, a check is first made on whether a matchcode is defined for this field. If this is not the case, the help view is displayed in which the check table of the field is the primary table. Thus, for each table no more than one help view can be created, that is, a table can only be primary table in at most one help view.

Difference between "Help View" and "Search Help"
Projection View
Projection views are used to suppress or mask certain fields in a table (projection), thus minimizing the number of interfaces. This means that only the data that is actually required is exchanged when the database is accessed.
A projection view can draw upon only one table. Selection conditions cannot be specified for projection views.
Maintenance View ( SE54 )
Maintenance views enable a business-oriented approach to looking at data, while at the same time, making it possible to maintain the data involved. Data from several tables can be summarized in a maintenance view and maintained collectively via this view. That is, the data is entered via the view and then distributed to the underlying tables by the system.

Diff between database view and inner join
Hello,
I need to select data from multiple tables. I need to choose between 2 options.
1) create a database view and use this view for select.
2) write an inner join in abap prorgam.
In which cases we should create a view and in which cases we should use a inner join?
What are the factors which decide these?
Pls advice.
Thanks,
Rupali.Hi,
Both are same..
But if you use regulary and used view in Multiple programs then create view..
If inner join in abap prorgam between two or more table used in less Programs and do not want to
create View (Means not to create transport request) then go for JOin in Program.

Hi, difference between database view and elementary search help
hi
pl. can any one tell me the difference between
database view and elementary search help,
and help view and elementary search help,
and database view and help view.
in the output i do not see any difference.
thanx.
rocky roboHI
An entire table can be included in a database view. In this case all the fields of the included table will become fields of the view (whereby you can explicitly exclude certain fields). If new fields are included in the table or existing fields are deleted, the view is automatically adjusted to this change.
Database view:

Difference between Database view and Table
Hi there,
Can anyone tell me the difference between Database view and Table.
Will the Database view query be more faster than a database table?Tables and database views can be defined in the ABAP Dictionary.
These objects are created in the underlying database with this definition. Changes in the definition of a table or database view are also automatically made in the database.
Data from several tables can be combined in a meaningful way using a view (join).
You can also hide information that is of no interest to you (projection) or only display
those data records that satisfy certain conditions (selection).
Database views implement an inner join. You only get those records which have an
entry in all the tables included in the view.
in views db modifications are not possible
views only contain data at run time
when they consult the database
in case of views the join definitions are already sstored in the database itself
whereas join as open sql is a query to oracle database as similar select statements
Views are optimized by SAP and stored in the repository while Joins
are in reports that needs to be compiled at every execution
Reward if helps

Add fields to maintenance view and update then using events
Hi experts:
I've created a table with 4 fields, one of them is userid. Also, there is a maintenance view to add new entries.
I want to display user name when typing userid using events (1 or 21). I know how to do it if username is one of the fields of the table, but there is a requirement to not store username in the table, just userid.
My question is: is possible to add a field into the maintenance view and update it using events but not store the value in DB?.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Carlos.In the save event just clear the entries of the field(user name) in the internal table.

Unable to create Tree (af:tree and af:menuTree) using ADF 10G
Hi All,
I have tried creating a tree af:menuTree and af:tree using ADF 10G (JDeveloper 10.3.1.4) and i am unable to see the output on the screen.
Can you please guide me on this.
Some searchs on OTN suggested that it is not supported in 10G. If this is so, can you suggest any workaround?
Thanks,
RamHi Michael,
**Here is the code I used for Menu Tree
<afh:cellFormat valign="top">
<af:menuTree var="node" value="TEST">
<f:facet name="testNode">
<af:commandMenuItem text="testCM" action="#{node.action}"/>
</f:facet>
</af:menuTree>
</afh:cellFormat>
**Here is the code I used for Tree
<afh:cellFormat valign="top">

Using bind variables in the model view for master detail
Hi all,
I have a master-detail views setup on the following two queries.
In the first query below - I use two bind variables to collect the start and end date.
you have to add (and :startDate = :startDate and :endDate = :endDate) or you will get errors - bind not defined in sql
I then use the viewQueryCriteria to collect the data on a search panel - so far so good. (Make the bind variables required) along with the other criteria.
The bind variables are displayed in the search panel and the data is entered correctly.
The query executes and all is happy.
VIEWOBJECT1
SELECT DepositAccounts.COA_ID,
... ChartOfAccounts.ACCOUNT_CODE || ' ' || ChartOfAccounts.ACCOUNT_TITLE as description
FROM DEPOSIT_ACCOUNTS DepositAccounts, DEPOSIT_ACCOUNT_DETAILS DepositAccountDetails, CHART_OF_ACCOUNTS ChartOfAccounts
WHERE DepositAccounts.ID = DepositAccountDetails.DEP_ACC_ID
and ChartOfAccounts.id = DepositAccountDetails.COA_ID
and :startDate = :startDate and :endDate = :endDate
Now I add the summation of a value (AMOUNT) to the view object (java - create view impl) to the VOViewRowImpl
and everything works - the value is shown in the transient attribute formatted and looking nice.
VIEWOBJECT2
SELECT PostingBatchAccounts.AMOUNT,
FROM POSTING_BATCH_ACCOUNTS PostingBatchAccounts, POSTING_BATCHES PostingBatches
where PostingBatchAccounts.PB_ID = PostingBatches.ID
and PostingBatches.SOURCE_DATE between :startDate and :endDate
Now I need to add the start date and end date to the child query - before the view executes (or the summation is calculated).
The attributes are in the where clause (PostingBatches.SOURCE_DATE between :startDate and :endDate) in VIEWOBJECT2 which is the child.
I need the child records and the summation to work with the date restrictions.
I would assume you could get access to the child view in the VOViewImpl file and set the bind variables there.
Everything I find is based on the JSF - not the model layer - this should be fairly easy (and common). can anyone give me a hand on this?Hi all,

Some special characters fail when passwords are changed via UCP, but are okay if I enter them directly into ACS. Any ideas on where to start? Problem always seen with the & character, but the $ character seems to be position dependent.
