Databases in Oracle

Hi,
I am using Oracle 10g. I'm trying to find a query for Oracle to retrieve the available databases, just like mysql has "SHOW DATABASES". But I just can't seem to find it in their horrific huge documentation section. Can somebody help me?
Thank u...!

Thank u for u reply.
But in this post some members told me to run this
command in SQL*Plus. How can we run this Sql*Plus
because u r telling this unix command.You did not notice the 'host' in front of the unix command, did you?
That comnmand basically tells SQLPlus to pass the rest of the line to the host operating system.
>
Can u suggest me what to do and where to run this
command to solve my problem.I think you might want to slow down here and learn some basic operating system and sqlplus commands.
Go to the http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.all_books site and scroll down to SQL*Plus Quick Reference and SQL*Plus Users Guide and Reference manuals.

  • Creating a new database in Oracle Database 10g...

    I have downloaded a copy of Oracle Database 10g Express Edition from Oracle's website. I am using Windows XP. I am trying to create an Oracle database that I can connect to from Access 2003 via ODBC.
    1. How do I create a new database? I can see options to create tables, views, etc. but not a database.
    2. I have created a System DSN connection in the ODBC Data Source Administrator for the Oracle ODBC driver. Once I create a database in Oracle, how do I actually establish a connection to it from Access? The ODBC code to connect is there, but when I run it, I get an error.
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. How do I create a new database? I can see options to create tables, views, etc. but not a database.If you can see those options then you are already connected to the database. You probably want to create a user, not a database (are you by chance coming from SQL Server?)
    driver={OracleDriver};Dbq=TESTDBQ;Uid=Administrator;Pwd=;You would replace "Administrator" with the name of the user you created in the database.

  • Error not send data a database of oracle please

    I cannot send data from a variable a the database of oracle.
    variables they are = unot,dost,trest but it does not recognize its values......
    it does not insert anything in the fields of the data base
    this code:
    con = DriverManager.getConnection(url,"ora1", "oracle");
    stmt = con.createStatement();
    String uprs = "insert into anexo (cod_ane,codigo,desc_anexo)
    values(" + unot + "," + dost + "," + trest +")";
    stmt.executeUpdate(uprs);
    this error:
    SQLException: ORA-00936: missing expression

    Are they text fields? Try surrounding them with quotes:
    String uprs = "insert into anexo (cod_ane,codigo,desc_anexo)
    values('" + unot + "','" + dost + "','" + trest +"')";Try displaying uprs before the executeUpdate() and make sure it's really valid SQL.

  • HELP: Problem creating a new database in Oracle 9i

    I am having difficulty in creating a new database in Oracle 9i, on Windows 2000. I would be obliged if somebody can go through the posting below and guide me as to what mistake I am making or what is the source of the problem:
    I reproduce the steps taken by me.
    I have decide the database to be called Mydb. I have made the following directories:
    -- d:\mydb
    -- d:\mydb\data
    -- d:\mydb\control
    -- d:\mydb\log
    -- d:\mydb\bdump
    -- d:\mydb\cdump
    -- d:\mydb\udump
    -- d:\mydb\archive
    -- d:\mydb\pfile
    -- d:\mydb\scripts
    -- d:\mydb\exp
    I copied the initoracle.ora file to d:\mydb\pfile\initmydb.ora, and made the following changes to it:
    -- db_name = mydb
    -- instance_name = mydb
    -- control_files = ("d:\mydb\control\control01.ctl")
    -- background_dump_dest = d:\mydb\bdump
    -- core_dump_dest = d:\mydb\cdump
    -- user_dump_dest = d:\mydb\udump
    -- remote_login_passwordfile = exclusive
    Also, I created a text file called d:\Oracle\Ora90\DATABASE\initmydb.ora with the following contents:
    ifile=d:\mydb\pfile\initmydb.ora
    At DOS prompt, I run the following command:
    set oracle_sid=mydb
    I run the ORAPWD utility to create internal password file at the command prompt.
    d:
    cd \oracle\ora90\database
    orapwd file=pwdmydb.ora password=panther entries=25
    I create a Windows service for the database as follows:
    oradim -new -sid mydb -startmode a -pfile d:\mydb\pfile\initmydb.ora
    I get connected:
    sqlplusw /nolog
    connect sys/change_on_install as sysdba
    startup nomount # pfile=d:\mydb\pfile\initmydb.ora
    create database mydb
    MAXINSTANCES 1
    MAXLOGHISTORY 1
    MAXLOGFILES 5
    MAXLOGMEMBERS 5
    MAXDATAFILES 100
    datafile 'd:\mydb\data\system.dbf' size 325m REUSE

    group 2 ('d:\mydb\log\log2.log') size 1m,
    group 3 ('d:\mydb\log\log3.log') size 1m;
    Now I get the following error:
    create database mydb
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
    The data files, control file, redo log files are all created. But the above error comes, and I am unable to start the database. What is the reason?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    PS

    Hi DENIS,
    I have executed the following commands (which are in a script file),
    1. sqlplus /nolog
    2. connect sys/change_on_install as sysdba
    3. create database ...
    4. ...
    When I execute the 3rd command, I get an error message as "ORACLE TERMINATED FORCED" and it will end the session. So when the next set of commands in the script are executed, I got the error saying "DATABASE NOT OPEN".
    How to rectify this problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kiran

    If you have different databases on same node you could choose to not set ORACLE_SID in shell init file but use instead interactive oraenv Oracle script to set the right ORACLE_SID.

    Best Reagrds,I have not seen that specifically but it appears that not all of the grants were correctly applied.
    I would suggest running the schema validation tool which can be found on the knowledgebase as Solution ID: prim75459 as this will tell you what is missing/invalid.
    Once you know that, you can pull the neccesary grants from the create scripts located in the cd1\install\database\scripts folder.

  • Can i create a standby database in oracle 10g standared edition ?

    what are the steps required for creating a standby database using oracle 10g standard edition. or Any other feature for mirroring database in oracle 10g standared edition

    Dear mithun,
    Please read the following online documentation;
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/standby.htm
    +"+
    +2.3.2 Oracle Software Requirements+
    +The following list describes Oracle software requirements for using Data Guard:+
    +* Oracle Data Guard is available only as a feature of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition. It is not available with Oracle Database Standard Edition. This means the same release of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition must be installed on the primary database and all standby databases in a Data Guard configuration.+
    +Note:+
    +It is possible to simulate a standby database environment with databases running Oracle Database Standard Edition. You can do this by manually transferring archived redo log files using an operating system copy utility or using custom scripts that periodically send archived redo log files from one database to the other. The consequence is that this configuration does not provide the ease-of-use, manageability, performance, and disaster-recovery capabilities available with Data Guard.+
