DateFormatSymbols and non support Locales

Hi
I am using the DateFormatSymbols class to get a list of the days of the week for various languages. As we know not all languages are currently supported by the JDK but I can supply additional languages using resource files.
What my code does is to first instantiate a new DateFormatSymbols for a given locale. If the Locale is not support i then catch the MissingResourceException (as stated in the javadoc) and load days of week from a resource file.
However this exception is never thrown and for unkown locales DateFormatSymbols just returns my OS default locale. Is this a known bug? or am i doing something wrong. Here's my code:
  String[] defaultDays;
  try
    DateFormatSymbols symbols = new DateFormatSymbols(new Locale("xx","xx"));
    defaultDays = symbols.getShortWeekdays();
  catch(MissingResourceException e)
  //unkown locale get weekdays from a resource file (hard coded for just now)
    defaultDays = new String[]{"s","m","t","w","t","f","s"};
  //display result
  for (int i = 0; i < defaultDays.length; i++) {
    System.out.print(defaultDays[i] + " ");
  }

As a guess that exception is probably only thrown if it can't find something that it 'knows' about. Thus if it couldn't find the default locale resource then it would throw it.
I suspect your only solution is going to be to keep a static list of what you are providing and use that first if that locale comes up.

  • WMIC - different output on English (non-localized) and non-English (localized) OS language

    Hi, I have strange behavior when running WMIC script to get serial numbers of storage devices across network:
    wmic /node:"w10","w16" /failfast:on diskdrive get model,serialnumber,description /format:list
    and get different results:
    C:\>wmic /node:"w10","w16" /failfast:on diskdrive get model,serialnumber,description /format:list
    Description=Дисковый накопитель
    Model=KINGSTON SV300S37A120G ATA Device - drive the same
    SerialNumber=303532304236323741333830383143[HIDEBYME] <<< Russian language OS
    Description=Disk drive
    Model=KINGSTON SV300S37A120G - drive the same
    SerialNumber=50026B[HIDEBYME] <<< English language OS
    I check many of them, and it's for sure, that SerialNumber output depends of OS language.
    If system are English, than we have SN, when not, we have something that 40 char lenght.
    Maybe someone know, how to fix it? Thanks.
    as is

    WMIC is not a script.  It is as ystemutility.  You should post in the forum for your OS.
    Language settings can affect everything. If a device is not designed t osupport languages then it may not report correctly. We cannot fix this in a script as it usually requiers low-level API calls.
    If you use PowerShell you could change langauge to English when accessing that device.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • SpeedGrade CC and non-supported GPU (video cards)

    My GeForce GT630 video card is not officially approved by Adobe. Premier Pro allows me to use it with a warning (and it works great). But with SpeedGrade CC apparently there is not way to use this GPU. The popular "hack" of changing the cuda_supported_cards.txt file does not work anymore -- it is locked. How can I get SpeedGrade CC to function with my GPU?

    Thanks for the encouragement. I found a way around the "saving" problem. I now have GeForce GT 630 at the top of the list in the TXT file. But in SpeedGrade CC Display Preferences it still claims, "No compatible devices have been found" even after a Refresh. Can you think of anything more I can try?
    P.S. I just used to this "hack" on Prelude CC and saw the immediate performance increase I expected. So it works for prelude -- why not SpeedGrade CC?

  • Adding new locale and language support

    Hi there,
    is it possible to add a non supported language to OIM Administration Console?
    The ideia is to copy one of the existing locale files and change their names, for example:
    we copied this two files xlRichClient_es.properties and xlWebAdmin_es.properties and renamed them to:
    xlWebAdmin_es_AR.properties and xlRichClient_es_AR.properties (Argentinian Spanish)
    then, at the xlDefaultAdmin.properties file, we just added this new locale: global.locales.es_AR=es|AR.
    Once this new locale is recognized, we can now edit the files text to...whatever..
    I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear enough, but...does anyone know if this is possible?! It seems so, though...
    thanks a lot!

    ok...it is basically like I said...
    If anyone needs to add a new language to OIM Administration Console, you just have to find your xlWebApp folder and at ...\xlWebApp\WEB-INF\classes you'll find the files that I was talking about. A pair for each language...(these files are within xlWebApp.war file, they just might have been extracted).
    In my case, OIM is only available in Brazilian Portuguese...and I needed to add European Portuguese (the mother language =D).
    So, you just need to copy the files xlWebAdmin_whatever.properties and xlRichClient_whatever.properties and rename them to the language you want OIM to automatically recognize (beware of the language code you need!).
    Again, in my case, I copied these two files xlWebAdmin_pt_BR.properties and xlRichClient_pt_BR.properties and renamed them to xlWebAdmin_pt.properties and xlRichClient_pt.properties...and voilá, now I just need to edit the content of these files to make the "translation" or whatever changes I may need.
    hope you find this helpful...

  • Root-Bridge and Non-Root Bridge Support

    I was wondering if the ISR Routers (Cisco 1811w) support the root-bridge and non-root-bridge feature. If not is there another device apart from the 1310 and 1410 bridges that support this feature?
    Thank You,
    VT

    Hi VT,
    The ISR AP supports both of these roles;
    Access Point Link Role Flexibility
    Access Point Link Role Flexibility allows access point radios to operate in a combination of radio roles,
    such as access point root, bridge root (with or without clients), bridge nonroot (with or without clients).
    This provides a more flexible deployment scheme to support the various applications requirement. Note
    that the ISR AP does not support access point repeater and WGB.
    Wireless Non-Root Bridge
    The wireless non-root bridge allows the access point radio to operate as the remote node in a point to
    point or point to multi-point network.
    Wireless Root Bridge
    The wireless root bridge role provides support for both point-to-point or point to multi-point bridging.

    RealPlayer can cause conflicts with Flash Player because it tries to assign EVERY TYPE of video or audio file to itself by default. I haven't used RealPlayer in years for that reason. It's an unnecessary program anymore. There are apps loike VLC media player that cna do EVERYTHING it does without conflicting with other apps like Flash Player.
    With WIndows 8, Microsoft began embedding FlashPlayer themselves into Internet Explorer. Because of that, you cannot download and install it from here. You cannot uninstall it from Internet Explorer without removing a specific Windows Update first. And you cannot update it via this website. ONLY through Windows Update can Flash Player for Internet Explorer be updated.
    That said, you probably DON'T have a virus that's causing the problems with Flash Player and Internet Explorer. Many, many websites are not "recognizing" the browser.
    This is a known problem with Internet Explorer 11, which Microsoft has been aware of since October 18 when they released IE11 The pages can't recognize the browser, so they don't recognize any of the plugins, like Flash Player.
    So far, Microsoft has made NO indication that they have any plan to fix it soon.
    Microsoft's recommendation is to use Compatibility View for affected pages, and "pretend" you're using an different browser. Trouble with that is it has seen limited success at best, and you have to individually enable it for EVERY page that has problems.
    I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser.
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Opera (from Opera)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Chrome (from Google)
    ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.

  • Outlook 2007 sends local mail and non-spam to junk folder

    I have exchange server 2003 on SBS with OWA and several outlook 2007 clients.  Email often seems to be sent to the junk mail folder by outlook 2007, especially when it comes from the exchange server (either local pickup or MAPI). This is definitely being done by the outlook client, since it never happens when the client is not running (for example, if outlook is not running and I use OWA, local email is never delivered to the junk mail folder).
    I turned off junk email filtering in outlook, and forced the local domain to the whitelist (outlook refuses to add it with the gui, saying it's my local domian, so I imported it from a file), and it still happens before and after.
    Any ideas?

    If it's a local machine, try setting the account to not use cached mode. That should force utilization of Exchange's rules.
    1.       Go to Tools >Account Settings
    2.       Highlight your Exchange Account and click “Change”
    3.       Uncheck “Use cached Exchange Mode”
    4.       Click Next and finish
    Note, this will not work well on a laptop that leaves the building, as it requires a connection with the server to view mail content.

    Am using a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Unicode and non-unicode

    WHAT IS DIFFRENTS BETWEEN UNICODE AND NON UNICODE ?
    BRIEFLY EXPLAIN ABOUT UNICODE?
                                                            THANKS IN ADVANCES

    A 16-bit character encoding scheme allowing characters from Western European, Eastern European, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Urdu, Hindi and all other major world languages, living and dead, to be encoded in a single character set. The Unicode specification also includes standard compression schemes and a wide range of typesetting information required for worldwide locale support. Symbian OS fully implements Unicode. A 16-bit code to represent the characters used in most of the world's scripts. UTF-8 is an alternative encoding in which one or more 8-bit bytes represents each Unicode character. A 16-bit character set defined by ISO 10646. A code similar to ASCII, used for representing commonly used symbols in a digital form. Unlike ASCII, however, Unicode uses a 16-bit dataspace, and so can support a wide variety of non-Roman alphabets including Cyrillic, Han Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Bengali, and so on. Supporting common non-Roman alphabets is of interest to community networks, which may want to promote multicultural aspects of their systems.
    ABAP Development under Unicode
    Prior to Unicode the length of a character was exactly one byte, allowing implicit typecasts or memory-layout oriented programming. With Unicode this situation has changed: One character is no longer one byte, so that additional specifications have to be added to define the unit of measure for implicit or explicit references to (the length of) characters.
    Character-like data in ABAP are always represented with the UTF-16 - standard (also used in Java or other development tools like Microsoft's Visual Basic); but this format is not related to the encoding of the underlying database.
    A Unicode-enabled ABAP program (UP) is a program in which all Unicode checks are effective. Such a program returns the same results in a non-Unicode system (NUS) as in a Unicode system (US). In order to perform the relevant syntax checks, you must activate the Unicode flag in the screens of the program and class attributes.
    In a US, you can only execute programs for which the Unicode flag is set. In future, the Unicode flag must be set for all SAP programs to enable them to run on a US. If the Unicode flag is set for a program, the syntax is checked and the program executed according to the rules described in this document, regardless of whether the system is a US or a NUS. From now on, the Unicode flag must be set for all new programs and classes that are created.
    If the Unicode flag is not set, a program can only be executed in an NUS. The syntactical and semantic changes described below do not apply to such programs. However, you can use all language extensions that have been introduced in the process of the conversion to Unicode.
    As a result of the modifications and restrictions associated with the Unicode flag, programs are executed in both Unicode and non-Unicode systems with the same semantics to a large degree. In rare cases, however, differences may occur. Programs that are designed to run on both systems therefore need to be tested on both platforms.

  • Unicode and non-unicode string data types Issue with 2008 SSIS Package

    Hi All,
    I am converting a 2005 SSIS Package to 2008. I have a task which has SQL Server as the source and Oracle as the destination. I copy the data from a SQL server view with a field nvarchar(10) to a field of a oracle table varchar(10). The package executes fine
    on my local when i use the data transformation task to convert to DT_STR. But when I deploy the dtsx file on the server and try to run from an SQL Job Agent it gives me the unicode and non-unicode string data types error for the field. I have checked the registry
    settings and its the same in my local and the server. Tried both the data conversion task and Derived Column task but with no luck. Pls suggest me what changes are required in my package to run it from the SQL Agent Job.
    Thanks.

    What is Unicode and non Unicode data formats
    Unicode :
    A Unicode character takes more bytes to store the data in the database. As we all know, many global industries wants to increase their business worldwide and grow at the same time, they would want to widen their business by providing
    services to the customers worldwide by supporting different languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. Many websites these days are supporting international languages to do their business and to attract more and more customers and that makes life
    easier for both the parties.
    To store the customer data into the database the database must support a mechanism to store the international characters, storing these characters is not easy, and many database vendors have to revised their strategies and come
    up with new mechanisms to support or to store these international characters in the database. Some of the big vendors like Oracle, Microsoft, IBM and other database vendors started providing the international character support so that the data can be stored
    and retrieved accordingly to avoid any hiccups while doing business with the international customers.
    The difference in storing character data between Unicode and non-Unicode depends on whether non-Unicode data is stored by using double-byte character sets. All non-East Asian languages and the Thai language store non-Unicode characters
    in single bytes. Therefore, storing these languages as Unicode uses two times the space that is used specifying a non-Unicode code page. On the other hand, the non-Unicode code pages of many other Asian languages specify character storage in double-byte character
    sets (DBCS). Therefore, for these languages, there is almost no difference in storage between non-Unicode and Unicode.
    Encoding Formats:
    Some of the common encoding formats for Unicode are UCS-2, UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32 have been made available by database vendors to their customers. For SQL Server 7.0 and higher versions Microsoft uses the encoding format UCS-2 to store the UTF-8 data. Under
    this mechanism, all Unicode characters are stored by using 2 bytes.
    Unicode data can be encoded in many different ways. UCS-2 and UTF-8 are two common ways to store bit patterns that represent Unicode characters. Microsoft Windows NT, SQL Server, Java, COM, and the SQL Server ODBC driver and OLEDB
    provider all internally represent Unicode data as UCS-2.
    The options for using SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 2000 as a backend server for an application that sends and receives Unicode data that is encoded as UTF-8 include:
    For example, if your business is using a website supporting ASP pages, then this is what happens:
    If your application uses Active Server Pages (ASP) and you are using Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000, you can add "<% Session.Codepage=65001 %>" to your server-side ASP script.
    This instructs IIS to convert all dynamically generated strings (example: Response.Write) from UCS-2 to UTF-8 automatically before sending them to the client.
    If you do not want to enable sessions, you can alternatively use the server-side directive "<%@ CodePage=65001 %>".
    Any UTF-8 data sent from the client to the server via GET or POST is also converted to UCS-2 automatically. The Session.Codepage property is the recommended method to handle UTF-8 data within a web application. This Codepage
    setting is not available on IIS 4.0 and Windows NT 4.0.
    Sorting and other operations :
    The effect of Unicode data on performance is complicated by a variety of factors that include the following:
    1. The difference between Unicode sorting rules and non-Unicode sorting rules
    2. The difference between sorting double-byte and single-byte characters
    3. Code page conversion between client and server
    Performing operations like >, <, ORDER BY are resource intensive and will be difficult to get correct results if the codepage conversion between client and server is not available.
    Sorting lots of Unicode data can be slower than non-Unicode data, because the data is stored in double bytes. On the other hand, sorting Asian characters in Unicode is faster than sorting Asian DBCS data in a specific code page,
    because DBCS data is actually a mixture of single-byte and double-byte widths, while Unicode characters are fixed-width.
    Non-Unicode :
    Non Unicode is exactly opposite to Unicode. Using non Unicode it is easy to store languages like ‘English’ but not other Asian languages that need more bits to store correctly otherwise truncation will occur.
    Now, let’s see some of the advantages of not storing the data in Unicode format:
    1. It takes less space to store the data in the database hence we will save lot of hard disk space.
    2. Moving of database files from one server to other takes less time.
    3. Backup and restore of the database makes huge impact and it is good for DBA’s that it takes less time
    Non-Unicode vs. Unicode Data Types: Comparison Chart
    The primary difference between unicode and non-Unicode data types is the ability of Unicode to easily handle the storage of foreign language characters which also requires more storage space.
    Non-Unicode
    Unicode
    (char, varchar, text)
    (nchar, nvarchar, ntext)
    Stores data in fixed or variable length
    Same as non-Unicode
    char: data is padded with blanks to fill the field size. For example, if a char(10) field contains 5 characters the system will pad it with 5 blanks
    nchar: same as char
    varchar: stores actual value and does not pad with blanks
    nvarchar: same as varchar
    requires 1 byte of storage
    requires 2 bytes of storage
    char and varchar: can store up to 8000 characters
    nchar and nvarchar: can store up to 4000 characters
    Best suited for US English: "One problem with data types that use 1 byte to encode each character is that the data type can only represent 256 different characters. This forces multiple
    encoding specifications (or code pages) for different alphabets such as European alphabets, which are relatively small. It is also impossible to handle systems such as the Japanese Kanji or Korean Hangul alphabets that have thousands of characters."1
    Best suited for systems that need to support at least one foreign language: "The Unicode specification defines a single encoding scheme for most characters widely used in businesses around the world.
    All computers consistently translate the bit patterns in Unicode data into characters using the single Unicode specification. This ensures that the same bit pattern is always converted to the same character on all computers. Data can be freely transferred
    from one database or computer to another without concern that the receiving system will translate the bit patterns into characters incorrectly.

  • Bauerbill: Powerpill + ABS, AUR, CPAN and Hackage support + more

    info page: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/info/bauerbill
    edit: the info page now contains a FAQ which you should check before posting any questions, especially questions about output
    I've created a version of Powerpill with ABS and AUR support. I've wanted to do this for a while but I didn't want to step on Yaourt's toes. Recently though there has been a wave of AUR helpers so I decided that it was time to throw my own contribution into the mix.
    Here's a quick feature overview:
    * AUR support (downloading, full dependency resolution, building, installation)
    * CPAN support (downloading, full dependency resolution, building, installation)
    * Hackage support (downloading, full dependency resolution, building, installation)
    * ABS support (can build all packages from source from any repo which provides the $repo.abs.tar.gz archive)
    * parallelization for faster downloads (single, combined package and source downloads for upgrades with aria2c, parallel searches, parallel taurball downloads, etc)
    * drops privileges to build when run as root, checks for sudo to install packages when run as non-root
    * unified sync db and AUR search (bauerbill -Ss, bauerbill -Si) with support for multiple search arguments
    * tracks all dependencies during build operations and cleans up makedepends when done
    * PKGBUILD inspection prompt with support for viewing, editing, backup up, diffing and patching files interactively
    * options to automatically patch and build specified packages
    * option to trust ABS PKGBUILDs to fully automate repo package building
    * option to trust specific AUR users to fully automate AUR package building
    * built-in Reflector support for finding additional mirrors for downloads
    * built-in PkgD support for retrieving packages over a LAN
    * build-in Rebase support for selective database extraction... also displays a list of changes during each operation
    Bauerbill is currently only available from the repo on my site and it depends on perl-xyne-common and perl-xyne-arch in the same repo. I rewrote large portions of the latter two while writing Bauerbill and I want to wait until the code feels stable before pushing them to [community]. Bauerbill will then get added to the AUR.
    Check that you have the latest versions of my perl modules before posting any bugs. I'm actively using bauerbill right now and pushing micro-updates as soon as I find something to fix.

    It's a Pacman wrapper so the default cache is /var/cache/pacman/pkg. You need to either specify a different cache using Pacman's "--cachedir <path>" option, or run it as root to gain access to the default cache. I'll try to make that message clearer, but try running "pacman -S emacs" and it will tell you that you need to be root too.
    Pank wrote:PS: I use pbfetch at the moment. The one thing that all these new yaourt replacements, execept pakthur, seem to miss is default to search. i.e. yaourt emacs would list all packages containing the term "emacs". Is there a reason that yaourt-replacements don't include this feature?
    Pacman doesn't default to searching. Use "bauerbill -Ss <pkg>" if you want to search.

    Nope. As the documentation states, it fetches $repo.abs.tar.gz archives. All of the official repositories contain archives of their PKGBUILDs and local source files (e.g. core.abs.tar.gz, extra.abs.tar.gz, community.abs.tar.gz, etc) that this is where Bauerbill gets the files for building repo packages. I did it this way because it enables Bauerbill to support unofficial repos that include such files. It's also much simpler than scraping the official site's html, which would be slow and place useless load on the server.
