DB Polling Options

Hello Everybody,
I have a Database adapter as an exposed service to my BPEL process. My BPEL keeps polling the DB adapter. My configurations of polling options in Step 9 are as follows
Polling frequency : 60 seconds
no of databse rows per XML document : 1
Database rows per transaction : 1
I checked the option : distributed polling
Now when there are 6 records in the database, there are 6 BPEL instances getting created in EM console. IS there any way to tell DB adapter, like when there are 6 records in Databse, after the first record is processed completely, then the 2nd BPEL instance should be created and third..fourth...fifth...sixth....i mean one after another....Please help me on this regard.
Thanks a lot !

Hi There,
if you want one record to be picked up every 60 seconds, keep distributed polling on but in WLS console edit the DbAdapter connection factory and set 'usesSkipLocking' to false.
A max of x records / polling interval is no longer the default because it acts as a speed limit on performance. It used to be you could get this speed limit by setting distributed polling, now you need to set distributed polling AND set usesSkipLocking to false.
If you are simply interested in in-order delivery, make sure on the Operation Page of the DbAdapter wizard you check the 'In-order' delivery check box. And make sure the BPEL process can be completed all in one transaction. Then the DbAdapter won't send the second message until the first has been processed.
To insure in-order delivery in an adapter neutral way, you can edit the BPEL configuration in composite.xml and set bpel.config.oneWayDeliveryPolicy to "sync". And make sure there are no transaction boundaries (dehydration points) within the BPEL process.
Thanks
Steve

• How to Set Polling Options of a DB adapter From EnterpriseManager/AdminCons

HI All,
We all know after Dragging a DB adapeter we can manually set the polling Options in J developer
However,
My query is how to Set Polling Options of a DB adapter From EnterpriseManager/AdminCons so that we dun hav to change our code and redeploy if any change is asked for.
My DB adapter is deployed to EM.(SOA Server).
Polling Options are like:
From the Polling Frequency list, select how frequently to poll for new records or events.
In the Database Rows per XML Document field, specify the number of rows per XML document when sending events to Oracle BPEL PM or Mediator. This is the batch setting between the database adapter and its consumer: Oracle BPEL PM or Mediator.
In the Database Rows per Transaction field, select Unlimited or enter a value to indicate the number of table rows to process during a single transaction.
When polling the database for events, you can order the returned rows by the selected column by using the Order By list. The best practice is to choose <No Ordering>, as message ordering regardless is not guaranteed without extra configuration.

Hi,
Inside your composite (in the EM), you can see there is a category table call 'Services and References'.
Under it, find the name of your JCA Adapter, where you've define the polling from the DB. Click on it and go to the property tab.
There you can find all the parameters you've set and more.
After you finish update it, click on Apply (this will automatically poll the data).

• How to specify custom SQL in polling db adapter with logical delete option

Hi all,
I am writing a SOA composite app using JDeveloper SOA Suite 11.1.1.4 connecting to a SQL Server db using a polling DB Adapter with the logical delete option to send data to a BPEL process.
I have requirements which go beyond what is supported in the JDeveloper UI for DB Adapter polling options, namely:
* update more than one column to mark each row read, and
* specify different SQL for the logical delete operation based on whether bpel processing of the data polled was successful or not.
A complicating factor is that the polling involves two tables. Here is my full use-case:
1) Polling will select data derived from two tables: e.g. 'headers' and 'details' simplified for this example:
table: headers
hid - primary key
name - data label
status - 'unprocessed', 'processed', or 'error'
processedDate - null when data is loaded, set to current datetime when row is processed
table: details
hid - foreign key pointed at header.hid
attr - data attribute name
value - value of data attribute
2) There is a many:1 relationship between detail and header rows through the hid columns. The db adapter polling SELECT shall return results from an outer join consisting of one header row and the associated detail rows where header.status = 'unprocessed' and header.hid = details.hid. (This is supported by the Jdeveloper UI)
3) The polled data will be sent to be processed by a bpel process:
3.1) If the bpel processing succeeds, the logical delete (UPDATE) operation shall set header.status = 'processed', and header.processedDate = 'getdate()'.
3.2) If bpel processing fails (e.g. hits a data error while processing the selected data) the logical delete (UPDATE) operation shall set header.status = 'failed', header.processedDate = 'getdate()', and header.errorMsg = '{some text returned from bpel}'.
Several parts of #3 are not supported by the JDeveloper UI: updating multiple columns to mark the row processed, using getdate() to populate a value of one of those column updates, doing different update operations based on the results of the BPEL processing of the data (success or error), and using data obtained from BPEL processing as a value of those column updates (error message).
I have found examples which describe specifying custom SQL using the polling delete option to create a template then modifying the toplink file(s) to specify custom select and update SQL to implement a logical delete. (e.g. http://dlimiter.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/advanced-logic-in-oracle-bpel-polling-database-adapter/ and http://myexperienceswithsoa.blogspot.com/2010/06/db-adapter-polling-tricks.html). But none of them match what I've got in my project, in the first case because maybe because I'm using a higher version of JDeveloper, and in the second I think because in my case two tables are involved.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, John

Hi John,
You've raised a good scenario.
First of all let me say that the purpose of the DB polling transaction, is to have an option to initiate a process from a DB table/view and not to update multiple fields in a table (or have other complex manipulation on the table).
So, when choose to update a field in a record, after reading it, you are "telling" the engine not to poll this record again. Sure, i guess you can find a solution/workaround for it, but I don't think this is the way....
The question now is what to do?
You can have another DB adapter where you can update the data after finishing the process. In that case, after reading the data (on polling transaction) - update the header.status = 'processed' for example, and after processing the selected data update the rest of the fields.
Hope it make some sense to you.

• Issue in Clustered environment DB adapter Polling

hi all ,
i have a table and one BPEL process is polling records depending on status value .
Polled records are updated from N to P after polling .
but , In cluster environment for One Row Multiple Instances are creating .
Is there any way to ensure that in Cluster env. also for single Row , only one BPEL instance will be created ?
I am using SOA 10.1.3.4
i have used that "Distributed Polling" option in DB adapter .
In JCA file i am using below configaration : -
ActivationSpec="oracle.tip.adapter.db.DBActivationSpec"
DescriptorName="PollTable.InterfaceData"
QueryName="PollTable"
PollingStrategyName="LogicalDeletePollingStrategy"

MaxTransactionSize="1"
PollingInterval="10"
NumberOfThreads="1"
UseBatchDestroy="false"
ReturnSingleResultSet="false"
In that i am facing the Table Lock scenario .

Use Reserved Value feature to avoid duplicate instances.
Even if i having 10 Records in database Row .Its locking all other 9 row and no instance are generating .Do you see any error in $ORACLE_HOME/opmn/logs/<BPEL/ESBRT container>.log file? If you are having 1-M relationship defined in adapter then possibly you are hitting a known issue.

I am facing an issue with DB adapter in OSB.
My requirement is, i have one table name as "Header Table",for every 1 sec around 5 messages are inserted into this table.By using that records i need to call API.
For this i created one DB adapter with polling option.It is poll the Header table for every 3 seconds and fetch the 5 records.Suppose in first iteration at 3 seconds it poll and get 5 records

But here issue is the thread is poll the table after first iteration(first 5) records are processing only.After All 5 records are processed only the next polling happening.
That means every 3 sec polling is not happening.
For this i increased NumberOfThreads value =3 in Adapter jca file.Then polling is Not working,it is completely stopped not even 3 sec also?
I tried with both XA , NonXA adapters and Distributed polling option also.But it is not working.This is not working in Cluster environment and as well as my local system?
When i use NumberOfThreads=1 it is working,More than 1 it is not working
These properties i used for JCA file.

• Duplicate processing by DBAdapter when using Distributed Polling with Logical Delete Strategy

We have DBAdapter based polling services in OSB running across two Active-Active clusters (total 20 managed service across 2 clusters),
listening to the same database table. (Both clusters read from the same source DB). We want to ensure distributed polling without duplication,
hence in the DBAdapter we have selected Distributed Polling option, meaning we are using "Select For Update Skip Locking".
But we see that sometimes, same rows are processed by two different nodes and transactions are processed twice.
How do we ensure that only one managed server processes a particular row using select for update? We do not want to use the markReservedValue option which was preferred in older version of DBAdapter.
We are using following values in DB Adapter configuration, the Jdev project for DBAdapter and the OSB proxy using DBAdapter are attached.
LogicalDeletePolling Strategy
MarkReadValue = Processed
MarkUnreadValue = Initiate
MarkReservedValue = <empty as we are using Skip Locking>
PollingFrequency = 1 second
maxRaiseSize = 1
MaxTransactionSize = 10
DistributionPolling = checked (adds lock-n-wait in properties file and changes the SQL to SELECT FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED)
Thanks and Regards

Hi All,
Actually I'm also facing the same problem.
Step I follwed:
1) Created a job_table in database
create talbe job_table(id, job_name, job_desc, job_status)
2)created a bpel process to test the Inbound distributed polling.
3)Configure the DBAdapter for polling.
a)update a field in the job_table with logical delete.
b)select the field name form the drop down
c) change the read value-->Inprogress and unRead value--->Ready
d) dont change the value for Reserved value
e) select the check box for "distributed polling".
f) the query will be appended with "For update NoWait."
g)click next and then finish.
4) Then i followed the below steps.
To enable pessimistic locking, run through the wizard once to create an inbound polling query. In the Applications Navigator window, expand Application Sources, then TopLink, and click TopLink Mappings. In the Structure window, click the table name. In Diagram View, click the following tabs: TopLink Mappings, Queries, Named Queries, Options; then the Advanced… button, and then Pessimistic Locking and Acquire Locks. You see the message, "Set Refresh Identity Map Results?" If a query uses pessimistic locking, it must refresh the identity map results. Click OK when you see the message, "Would you like us to set Refresh Identity Map Results and Refresh Remote Identity Map Results to true?Ó Run the wizard again to regenerate everything. In the new toplink_mappings.xml file, you see something like this for the query: <lock-mode>1</lock-mode>.
5) lock-mose is not changed to 1 in toplink_mappingss.xml
Can we edit the toplink_mappings.xml manually.
If yes, what allt he values Ineed to change in toplink_mappings.xml file, so that it will not pick the same record for the multiple times in clustered environment.
Please help me out this is urgent.
Thanking you in advance.

• Current DateTime in Database polling 'WHERE Clause'

Hi,
I am trying to explore the usage of polling option with Database adapter in SOA Suite 11g.
I am doing a sample process which will poll the data from a database table which has 2 fields, one is ID and the other one is UpdatedDate which is of type TIMESTAMP. I am trying to delete the records after polling, whose UpdatedDate is less than the current date. I am using the where clause in polling option to set the condition of UpdatedDate < CurrentDate.
The problem is I am not getting, how to get the current date in the right side of the expression. To provide the right side option, we have 3 options of Literal, Query and parameter. I have tried will all the options; when I am trying with Literal, the right side is updated with Null value.
Could any one help me to resolve this issue. I need the value of current dateTime as the right side expression of the where clause.
Thanks.

Hi,
You're maybe over complicating this... The DbAdapter should be able to delete processed records automatically for you since you use one of the defined polling strategies...

• BPEL: invalid namespace error with DB adapter polling and java embedding

Hello
I'm using bpel 10.1.3.1.0, and I'm experiencing the following problem: I'm am not able to use the SetTitle() function in a process which polls for records using the db adapter.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
- I create a very simple bpel process which poll for records in a table.
- I deploy it, write manually a record in the polled table and the process start.
- I can see the record picked up through the visual flow in the console
- everything looks ok and the process ends correctly
- now I add a java embedding activities just after the receive
- I set the instance title like this: setTitle("Go");
- redeploy, write a record in the polled table and the process start.
- but the process ends in error with the following message "XMLDOMException has been thrown. invalid namespace for prefix xmlns"
And there is no way to make it work. Consider:
If I put the same java embedding activity in another process, for example a simple asynchronous process which just copy the input to the output, and I run from the console, the instance title is set as I want ("Go")
If I remove the three lines from the polling process
<bpelx:exec name="Java_Embedding_1" language="java" version="1.3">
<![CDATA[setTitle("Go");]]>
</bpelx:exec>
then the process is executed correctly again. I add them again and then namespace error.
Whatever statement I put in the java embedding activity (for example a string concatenation or even just a comment I have the same result: invalid namespace for prefix xmlns.
Does anybody has a suggestion to evercome the problem? I need to set the title because its a mess to find out which instance processed a specific record.
Thanks by
Paolo

I made a lot of further tests, and I can say the problem is related only to the database adapter polling mechanism.
If I create an asynchronous process, with any kind of database activity (for example select) I can set the title normally.
If I create a process which start with database table polling, then I cannot use the java embedding.
try this:
- create BPEL empty project
- drop a database adapter service and follow the wizard:
- select a connection (I tried both oracle or sqlserver connection)
- select "poll for new or changed record"
- select any table empty or with few record inside (1 or 2)
- press next 4 times
- chose delete record after read (press next)
- chose order by "no ordering" in polling options (press next 2 times)
- now drop a receive activity on the process, and connect with the polling partner link
- drop a java embedding and write any valid java statement
- deploy; if the table is empty, write a recod in the table
- the process is instantiated, but the it fails in the --> receive <-- activity with "invalid namespace" error

• Database Adapter Polling

I am using Jdeveloper 10.1.3.1.0 to do the database polling. The adapter polls two tables joined by the foreign key.Then it will update the status code as logic deletion. However, when I tried to set the database rows per xml document to 1 on step 10 of 11 of the polling options. However, when I tried to set database row per transaction to 50, it won't allow me. My understanding is that this 50 will set the database commit every 50 records. The wizard basically stopped there. Only after I changed it to unlimited, it proceeded.Can anybody help me?

Hi,
The triggering instances will not depend on the Database rows/transaction but will only depend on the Database rows/xml document.
Database rows/transaction is internal to the DB and the DB adapter.
If u keep Database rows/transaction as 200 and no. of rows/ xml document as 100 and 1000 rows are to be processed, then it will create 10 instances.
However if you have 1000 rows for processing DB adapter will run a cursor in a loop to pick up 200 rows from the 1000
rows 5 times (this is a batch setting between DB and the DB adapter and will distribute the load of picking 1000 rows at a time into 5 transactions) and then these 200 rows will be distributed into 2 BPEL instances of 100 rows (this is a batch setting between DB adapter and BPEL).
Hope this clarifies.
With Regards,
Harshwardhan

The reason for this is most likely that either
1) the Resource Adapters RAR file has not been deployed successfully to the WebLogic J2EE Application server or
2) the JNDI <jndi-name> setting in the WebLogic JCA deployment descriptor has not been set to eis/DB/soademodatabase. In the last case you might
have to add a new 'connector-factory' entry (connection) to the deployment descriptor.

I confugired the Connection factory properly; I checked at DB Adapter -> Configuration -> Outbound Connection Pools -> xADataSourceName - jdbc/soadeoDatabase
when I checked at JNDI tree I dont have any value under it.

can any body help me in this?
Please let me know whether I follwed correct procedure or not?
If I am wrong, please provide me the correct steps.
Thanks in Advance.

This error is usually raised if there is no outbound pool connections with the "eis/db/soademodata" name in the database adapter.
First create a data source to the database in the JDBC Resources.
Next in Weblogic server console --> Deployments --> DBAdapter --> Configurations --> Outbound Pool Connections --> create a new outbound pool connection with the name "eis/db/soademodata".
Now update the "xADataSourceName" property of this connection pool with the JNDI name of the datasource created in the first step.

• Database Adapter Polling problem

Hi All,
The polling option is processing all the rows in a table at a time instead of using polling frequency. I have used an option of update a field (logical delete) where I have initialized unread value='N' and read value='Y'. Now ,the problem is i have to poll a single row from the table for every 60 seconds ( second row should be processed only after 60 seconds), but all the rows are processing at a same time. Can somebody let me know what could be the problem?
The options that I set in db adapter are:
Polling Frequency: 60 seconds
Database &rows per XML Document: 1
Database Rows per transaction: 1
JDBC options , Query & Timeout: 60

• Issue with DB Adapter Polling

Hi all,
I am trying a Polling service with Logical Delete as polling option. Unfortunately, service is not polling the database. We have only insert and update rights on the database is that the problem.
Do I need admin rights on the database for the polling. ?? I am really help less and not able to find the issue.
I have created the datasource as XA and with all default settings.. added the outbound connection pool and updated the DBAdapter project, restarted the servers and then created the datapolling..
I have created a data polling in another database and it is working fine, but I am not sure why exactly the polling is not working in the database which I need.. :'( please help me and lemme know
if you need any other info for finding out the issue?

If you mean Sys/SYSDBA rights then no, you do not need that to be able to poll. What you need is Select/Update/Insert rights on the particular table. If the table is created in the tablespace of the DB schema which you have configured in the datasource, then there should not be any issues and you should not need any grants done in DB.
If table is created in tablespace of a different DB schema(user) and you are polling using a different schema user (which is configured in the datasource on weblogic) then make sure that the DB schema you are putting in the datasource has select/update/insert rights on the table you are trying to poll from.

• How many records does JDBC adapter can obtain in one polling?

Hello everybody,
I need to do an interface between legacy system and SAP ECC, the legacy systems have a DB so i use the jdbc adapter (sender) and receive the information to SAP ECC with proxy, so i need to activate the polling option from my jdbc adapter working as a sender, i read a table with lot of records, and i need to know how many records does jdbc adapter support when the polling is executed, because is necessary read all records from the table and change the status of the processed field.
Is possible to get all the records from that table in one polling interval (50,000 records aprox)?, or i need to do the polling by blocks of records until finish all records from the table?, the second option, i dont have idea how can i do it.
Regards,
Vicman

Hi again!,
i still working on that, but i have a question, is possible to handle Store Procedure in jdbc adapter?? is supported?, like PL SQL, because i was working in the next query but i don't know if it works and where do i need to locate the query in the Query SQL Statement or in Update SQL Statement field or both? but how?.
DECLARE c_cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT * FROM tablename
WHERE processed=0
OPEN c_cursor
FETCH NEXT FROM c_cursor
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
update tablename set processed=1
FETCH NEXT FROM c_cursor
END
CLOSE c_cursor
DEALLOCATE c_cursor

• DB Polling

Hi,
I did polling example like when ever a new record is inserted to table 1 that record will copy to table2 and frequency I mentioned to 5 seconds.
After I deployed the application records from table1 copied to table2
again i inserted 2 more records. but these 2 are not copying to table2.
Please help me whet to do for this?

In Polling Options Step 10 of 13 I got the following SQL statements.
Pre Polling SQL:
SELECT SEQ_VALUE FROM MY_SEQUENCE WHERE (SEQ_NAME = 'TABLE1')
Polling SQL:
SELECT SNO, "NAME", CARDNUMBER, STATUS FROM TABLE1 WHERE (SNO > #SEQ_VALUE) ORDER BY SNO ASC
After Read SQL:
UPDATE MY_SEQUENCE SET SEQ_VALUE = #SEQ_VALUE WHERE (SEQ_NAME = 'TABLE1')

• DB Polling one process

Hello Everybody,
I have a Database adapter as an exposed service to my BPEL process. My BPEL keeps polling the DB adapter. My configurations of polling options are as follows
Polling frequency : 60 seconds
no of databse rows per XML document : 1
Database rows per transaction : 1
Now when there are n records in the database, there are n BPEL instances getting created in EM console. IS there any way to tell DB adapter, like when there are n records in Databse, after the first record is processed completely (Column JOB:Yes --> JOB:NO) , then the 2nd BPEL instance should be created and third..n mean one after another....
Please help me on this regard.
Thanks a lot !
