Dba....
Can you help me answer a dba question. I want to know if the system tablespace should be dictionary or locally managed. And also if which tablespaces should be locally managed such as Rollback segment or Temp tablespaces.
Furthermore, I want to know if it is necessary to manage extents in the system tablespace.
Hi
To display the current "configuration" you can use the following statement:
SELECT tablespace_name, extent_management, allocation_type FROM dba_tablespaces
If possible use only locally managed tablespaces. This is very important for RBS and TEMP. Notice that only with 9iR2 is possible to have a locally managed system tablespace.
Usually no extent management is performed on the system tablespace.

Can not insert a row to a table from Oracle DBA Studio
Hi,
I try to use the Oracle DBA Studio to create a table and put some test data in it. Here is what I found:
I start Oracle DBA Studio on the client machine by connecting to an Oracle server 8i (8.1.7). I create a simple table called Test with two columns: one is USER, VARCHAR2, 10; and the other is USER2, CHAR, 2. After that, I right click on the table name and select "Table Data Editor" from the popup menu. The table editor window shows up. I type in the value 'AA' and 'BB' in the grid of two columns. Then I click the Apply button. An error message box popped up:
ORA-00928 missing SELECT keyword.
I click Show SQL button. The SQL statement is as following:
INSERT INTO "TASYS"."TEST" (USER ,USER2 ) VALUES ('AA' ,'BB').
I copy the statement to SQL Plus and run it. The same error is generated. But if I remove (USER, USER2) from the statement, it inserts a row without complaint. In other word, the database will not allow to insert if individual columns are list. I realize something must wrong with the new server and client installed and could not figure out what happening. Hope someone can help.
Thanks.
nullI am not sure, but could it be that USER is a keyword or predefine word. Check Oracle'slist of predefine/keyword

Can i sign up as a company with a dba?
Hi,
I developed my first application and want went to set up my paid developer account and i'm given the option to sign up as an individual or company.
I don't want my name as individual to be on the developer account and on the app store and i also prefer to have a company name and brand represent my apps.
But i don't want to create a whole corporation or LLC with all its expenses and procedures before i'm doing more series business. i want to get a BDA (doing business as) as i am in california and open an bank account and everything and use that as my company (which is basically me but more official).
Can i do that? does apple accept DBA's as a company to sign up with?
They also ask for these items and i don't know what some of them are or if they existing in a case of DBA:
Articles of incorporation
Business license
Certificate of Formation
Charter documents
Operating Agreement
Partnership papers
Reseller or vendor license
If anyone has created an account with dba or know anything about this, i would appriciate any information you can provide.
Thanks in advance,
JJamesWise wrote:
I am now however, really considering creating an LLC instead. the whole take it away and sue you doesn't sound like fun at all. not sure what the expense is but perhaps its worth the invesment and hassle.
not sure where to even start with that.
Money. Lots of it. In all honesty, you are very unlikely to be sued. Your liklihood of being a target is directly proportional to how juicy the reward might be - i.e. how much money you have. That is why everyone is suing Apple these days - not because they have done anything wrong, but because they have money to settle with. At worst, a small developer might get a cease and desist notice. Sometimes patent trolls go after regular people, but that is like getting struck by lightening. You can take some precautions, but it is actually very rare and if it hits you, you're toast regardless.
also would you know how i check if a developer name is taken?
Have your attorney do a trademark search. Just joking. Don't bother. All the good names are taken. You can't just look for developer names, you have to look for any name that has been trademarked for anything related to what you are doing. Your bet is to invent a name that doesn't exist and that no one else would want. My first business name was "Harmony Software" - and I was definitely the first to have it. But then someone sent me a cease and desist because they mentioned the word "email" in their trademark application. Otherwise, there was no similarity whatsoever. But I was far too busy and far too poor to fight them. I came up with "Etresoft" that is almost French, but not quite, and a little English, and pretty much unpronounceable and unreadable by most people. I'm safe now.
I would also urge you to reconsider using a personal account. Look up someone with a personal account and try to track them down. Because Apple does most of the legwork for you, there isn't much you need to reveal. -

DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's
I'd like to have this project included in the Open Source Oracle tools list at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/community/opensource_projects.html
I've been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I've always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Homes and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now its in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OSs, other Shells, and other Databases.
Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:
DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts designed to make it easy for DBA's to use Databases in a command line environment. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh and bash on AIX, Solaris, Linux. The code base itself is 3 years old and has been in use in Production environments all of that time.
Features include:
* Automatic setting of all environment variables based on SID requested.
* Manage PATH's and other path like variables for each ORACLE_HOME needed.
* Run scripts with stored passwords (no more hard-coding of passwords!!)
* Automatically set SID based on Script location (makes it easier to share scripts between SID's)
* manage temporary script output and check for oracle errors in output
* check database status and versions from scripts
* stop/start databases in parallel (faster startup)
* compile all database objects
* analyze objects in parallel (Faster analyzes)
* set aliases and variables for common SID areas, etc..
* many helpful commands for common Oracle tasks
Over a thousand people have already downloaded the prior release and more are downloading every hour.
I'm seeking feedback from anybody that would be willing to take a look at the project, trying it out, give me any feedback you have on it, and perhaps even direct me to where I could best promote this project.
I wrote a tutorial that shows at a glance some of the more useful features of DBAShell:

Scott's profile has password_verfiy function. Hence i thought abc123 password was not matching with the password verify condition. Surprisingly, what ever password SCOTT tries with, he could get the same error message and could not change his password.. Ultimatly SCOTT could never change his password. How is it possible ??
It is noteworthy to mention that if i give DBA role to SOCTT then he can change his password with abc123 or any thing that satisfies with password verification function.
Now Only a user who has DBA role or a DBA could change passwords..
Can somebody through some light on it and explain what corrective action to be taken so that Users can change their password without DBA's interreption.
Thanks in advance

Srini<PRE>
This is the description of the error message:
=============================================================================
ORA-28003 password verification for the specified password failed
Cause: The new password did not meet the necessary complexity specifications
and the PASSWORD_VERIFY_FUNCTION failed.
Action: Enter a different password. Contact the database administrator to find
out the rules for choosing the new password.
=============================================================================
it clearly says that password has to match the complexity specifications. You will not be able
to change password without meeting the complexity requirements.
DBA's can make the change to the password because if DBA's can not change the password, it could lock
you out of the database (all users including the DBA's) and you will not be able to access the
database.
Try removing the password verify function and see if you can then change the password succssfully.
</PRE>
hi Prakash,
The verify password function is standard oracle function and I do not think the current problem is any way related to the rules that were framed in verify password function. The key point here is a user could not change his own password. But a DBA or a user who has ALTER USER system privs.. can do so..

How would I create a function to establish is a user has data dba access?
Mark,
Your script does not display all system privileges granted to a user. Here is an example.

2.1.1 and 3.0 EA2: No tables shown for a non-dba user on 11R2
Hi all
I'm experiencing a strange problem with one 11R2 DB standard edition installation on Windows 2008 32-bit.
Versions are:
Windows
Windows 2008 SP2 32 bit (build 6002)
Oracle
Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE 11.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
Java
java version "1.6.0_23"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_23-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode, sharing)
The DB has some users, to whom some tables belong.
If I run SQL Developer (either 2.1.1 or 3.0 EA2) on the server (as windows administrator), and create a connection using one of the non-dba users credentials, clicking on the Tables (filtered view) leaf, does not show any table, even if they are on the DB (e.g. using sqlplus from command line and doing a select table_name from user_tables shows the entire list, and I can select, insert, delete and so on).
If I connect from my pc (I have 10g client installed), it works perfectly, i.e. I see the list of tables, and I can operate on them as expected.
Conversely, on 11R2 another installation (Oracle Enterprise Edition on Windows 2003 Enterprise), both versions of sqldeveloper work fine on the server machine. Here versions are:
Windows
Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 build 3790
Oracle
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE 11.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
Java
java version "1.6.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)
What could be wrong here? Is there any way to debug it?
Thanks in advance
Ciao
AndreaI run sqldeveloper.bat as instructed by you.
These are the results. The error appears only when starting sqldeveloper. When I expand tables I see nothing.

Error while running the Oracle Text optimize index procedure (even as a dba user too)
Hi Experts,
I am on Oracle on 11.2.0.2 on Linux. I have implemented Oracle Text. My Oracle Text indexes are fragmented but I am getting an error while running the optimize_index error. Following is the error:
begin
ctx_ddl.optimize_index(idx_name=>'ACCESS_T1',optlevel=>'FULL');
end;
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
ORA-06512: at "CTXSYS.DRUE", line 160
ORA-06512: at "CTXSYS.CTX_DDL", line 941
ORA-06512: at line 1
Now I tried then to run this as DBA user too and it failed the same way!
begin
ctx_ddl.optimize_index(idx_name=>'BVSCH1.ACCESS_T1',optlevel=>'FULL');
end;
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
ORA-06512: at "CTXSYS.DRUE", line 160
ORA-06512: at "CTXSYS.CTX_DDL", line 941
ORA-06512: at line 1
Now CTXAPP role is granted to my schema and still I am getting this error. I will be thankful for the suggestions.
Also one other important observation: We have this issue ONLY in one database and in the other two databases, I don't see any problem at all.
I am unable to figure out what the issue is with this one database!
Thanks,
OrauserNHow about check the following?
Bug 10626728 - CTX_DDL.optimize_index "full" fails with an empty ORA-20000 since 11.2.0.2 upgrade (DOCID 10626728.8) -

Can no longer logon to EM DBA-Studio 8.1.7. with user SYSTEM
Hello
my 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition Database shows some "strange bahavior". I can no longer logon to Enterprise Manager Console with user system. (Message: This Application needs more privileges...) But the user system still has the same system privileges as before when it worked fine. So what could have gone wrong?
The logon with user sys as sysdba still works.
I can still logon with any user in SQL Worksheet and SQL Plus for instance.
I have checked for any data loss......but all data still seems to be available. I checked for it with desc and select commands.
BUT.....I can no longer post a "select * from cat"
(Message: Table or view does not exist !)
The database is in archivelog mode in case a recovery is necessary.
Before the "crash" a normal user schema dump was exported without any problem. But that shouldn't have triggered off the problem!?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much for any hint.
Stefan
PS: My user SYSTEM already has the DBA and the SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE but still is no longer able to logon in DBA-Studio!
I assume it is a more serious problem since none of my users can still perform a "select * from cat" which should always be possible!Stopping the jrew process is what i do anyway, but that doesn't seem to be e very elegant way of working with DBA Studio. What is the reason for this behavior?
Thanks to anyone who can give me a clue -
