Dbms_Scheduler and executable script

Hi,
I have a scenario. I was running a shell script (which in turn runs an oracle procedure) every 30 minutes and put it in cron. Now, this was before when the procedure used to take less than 30 minutes.
Now a days, intermittently, it takes MORE than 30 minutes. So, the second run of the procedure is not obeying the limits set for the program.
What I would like to have is have ONE instance of the shell script(it emails after the procedure is run), running at any given time. So, if the cron fires up and it sees that there is already one instance of the script running and this shouldn't run now.
The way I was trying to do this is like this:
i). Use dbms_scheduler to run the executable and somehow (I need help here on how) stopping the next run to not fire IF there is one already running.
or
ii). Use dbms_scheduler to run the actual procedure and somehow allowing only ONE run of the procedure at any given time (In this scenario, I have to take care of the email from Oracle itself instead of from unix).
or
iii). There is another solution where I was using autonomous transaction to update a table that the program is running and then NOT run the same procedure when it is already running. But, since this is an in-house solution and Oracle might have something for this already, I would like to use the Oracle one.

Actually i) is done for you automatically. If you schedule a job to run periodically and the last run runs over the next start date then dbms_scheduler will automatically skip the next run and go to the next one. dbms_scheduler never has two instances of the same job running at the same time.
So you don't need any extra concurrency control. If you do need concurrency control, dbms_lock offers a simple way to protect access to a resource (e.g. if only one session should be accessing a table at a time).
Finally if you just need e-mail sent when a job fails you can use an Oracle-provided utility on the Scheduler home page

Look for the job notification package under Scheduler Utilities which will make it very easy to send e-mail when your job fails.

    I have an issue with a dbms_scheduler and a shell script execution. So, the shell script as it self works fine, when i'm executing ./test.sh all process is running, but when i'm executing the script from dbms_scheduler it just simply doesn't work. Actually it works, but some of executable information in sh doesn't work, seems it just jump over of the part of the script. Sendmail part is running, maybe there is problem with rman script as it self?

    There is no error, i just receive all the time e-mail, seems it jumps over rman. I tried almost everything and still couldn't get result as i want. And, if i'm running script from command line - it works. Rman calls, and starts to recover archivelogs.

  • Change directory and execute script

    I'm trying to write a small program that gets 4 input values from the user and based on the first 3 values will change to a specific directory on a unix system. Using the fourth value it will execute a perl script in the directory. The fourth value is a variable in the script command line. What are some of the ways to get the program to do a CD and execute the script? Thanks for any suggestions/help. Steve

    One more question, How to force dbms_scheduler that using user oracle (OS) to run shell script?, as I know, default user is nobody and Oracle version 10.2.0.2 later that have external.job.ora to set it but 10.2.0.1 doesn't have it.

    I changed scheduler by set argument as below

    dbms_scheduler.set_job_argument_value('TEST',1,argument_value,'/home/oracle/test.sh');
    That is work. below is conclusion to did
    1. Change permission of $ORACLE_HOME/bin/extjob to 4750 (-rwsr-x---)
    2. Change owner of $ORACLE_HOME/bin/extjob to oracle:dba
    3. Use '/usr/bin/bash' instead of '/usr/bin/sh'
    But I found error about download file process that I'm using wget to download source file in shell script and run by dbms_scheduler as above.
    My problem, first file can download normally and process until finish but second file was hang.
    Do you have any idea or solution to prove and resolve it?

  • VERY simple find and execute script to be improved

    hello, I've been searching for other scripts like the following but have found nothing, so decided to hack this together. I have almost 0 bash programming experience, so I'm sure some kind soul could easily improve it. The functionality should be obvious to anyone here. It could probably do with some limit to the files being searched for, but I only use it in directories and with queries that I know won't give lots of results. Obviously, if there's some better script/option that my google fu couldn't find, then please let me know. Smart arse one liners more than welcome.

    Just after I went to bed lastnight I figured out the simplest way (i.e. only way I understand) to do what I wanted - just put it as a function in your .bashrc file.  Export doesn't work from a script back to the shell it was called from - that's what I was trying to say last night. So then, the final function is this:

    This works great. If any newbies stumble upon this page (I've been looking for something like this since I started using the command line) then I'll briefly run through how it works:
    1 - you type "fns x" where x is a word or partial word you know is in the filename
    2 - you select whichever of the found files/directories you want
    3a - you can then enter a command to run (e.g. vim)
    3b - or just hit ctrl-c to return to the prompt, and then use $X in place of wherever you would have put the path in the command you want to run. e.g. "cd $X" will move you to that directory, if it was a directory you were looking for

    Calendar (not called iCal anymore) does not include that capability any longer, apparently.  What you have to do now is go to Automator and create a Calendar Alert action.  You can add a Run AppleScript object to the action and paste in your script there, then when you save it, it will become available as a choice in the alert menu in Calendar.

  • Can servlets/ jsp automatically run perl scripts and executables?

    I'm a student and am new to to servlets and web programming in general.
    I need to know if it's possible to run perl scripts and executables automatically from servlets/ jsp.
    The program I am planning on creating should have a client outside a firewall that uploads perl files to a gateway machine inside the firewall, the servlet should be able to run this perl file, and then pass the resulting file as an argument to an executable, to be run by another servlet on a different server.
    I've tried looking everwhere for an answer to this and am about to revert to a cgi based approach because I'm not sure if it would work so any help/ suggestions would be much appreciated.

    There might be some other dependencies from other commons stuff that you will need to resolve to run it.
    Once you have that, presumably you are not telnetting back to the source of the applet. If so you will need to deal with security for the applet. Usually that means that you must sign the applet. Otherwise you will have to modify the policy file on each client machine that will run the applet.

    However...
    When you execute a query as a statement then toad itself opens the cursor against the database and issues the statement, fetching the rows as they are needed to display in it's interface. You say it takes only about 3 second to run, but the chances are that you haven't scrolled the result window down to the last record, for which I'm sure you'd find it takes a little longer.
    When you execute a query as a script, TOAD passes the query out to be run in SQL*Plus rather than from within TOAD itself. With SQL*Plus, it runs the whole statement fetching all the rows before returning control, the same as if you had scrolled to the end of the result set in TOAD.
    In reality there should be no difference in the time it takes to execute the statements to completion in either environment.

    "or anything can help to achieve this"Your question is rather vague, so it's hard to know what "this" is.
    Anyway, there are two aspects to your question:
    1. running a script (presumably a .SQL script or similar).
    Oracle doesn't provide much in the way of built-ins to run scripts. Scripts are OS tools, and generally intended to be invoked from an OS agent (a shell script, SQL*Plus, etc). One option for running scripts is to build a Java Stored Procedure which mimics teh SQL*Plus HOST command. Tom Kyte has an example of this. Find it here: http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:952229840241 Alternatively, as others have pointed out, DBMS_SCHEDULER supports running OS executables (since 10g). This would be a good solution if you want to run the script repeatedly, at definable times.
    2. accessing a remote directory
    The database can only access local directories. If you want it to be able to access a remote directory you will need to persuade your sysadmin or network admin to share the requisite drive and create a mapping to it on your database server.
    As for other ways of doing it, well the best way is to avoid the need for a script in the first place. Oracle has added a whole bundle of functionality to the database which increasingly render shell scripts obsolete. If you can explain what your script does we might be able to explain how to implement it as a pure PL/SQL solution.

  • Can't get conky-cli and bash scripts to both display in dwm statusbar!

    I'm trying to configure my dwm status bar to display some simple information using conky-cli and bash scripts. At first I tried just letting conky run the bash scripts (for network and volume state), but this increased my cpu usage by about 5%, which is significant considering I normally have 1-3% usage when idle. Also, I wanted to keep conky because it makes the display of certain information easy, such as cpu & RAM usage.
    The problem is I'm having trouble getting both to display side by side. Here are the relevant parts of my .xinitrc:

    For some reason when I run this I only get the network/volume scripts and date running, updating every second (I think). The conky line just doesn't show up. I don't know what could be wrong, since I didn't see any error messages.
    An even better solution would be to just have shell scripts to display CPU and MEM usage. I have a dual-core cpu, cpu0 and cpu1. I'd like to see both percentages if possible, or at least a percentage that is an accurate average of the two or something. In conky-cli I have something that shows:
    cpu0/1: xx% xx%
    Also, seeing RAM usage would help a lot. In conky it shows:
    mem: xx% (xxxMB)
    These are the ways I would like to have bash scripts show them, if possible, but I have zero skill in bash programming. I made this an option in case it's easier/cleaner/less resource hungry than a conky solution. Personally, if they're about the same in these aspects, I would prefer something with conky and the shell scripts because conky is so extensible, yet it's only flaw is executing scripts with minimal resource usage.

    Thanks. I was thinking of using load average to save a few characters, but I didn't quite understand the numbers. I'll try that once I get to my Linux box, but could you please explain or post a link to something that explains load average (what's low, high, normal, etc.)?
    EDIT: I found a website that explains loadavg. I now have my dwm status bar displaying it perfectly (yay!). Now I just need to add a few more things like battery status, etc. and I might be done. I'll probably post here if I have more questions, though.

    We've been getting the following error for some time now.

    Unfortunately the instance in question has since been decommissioned and simply does not exist any more. 
    We're currently on a repeat count of over 350,000 and I would REALLY like to get it stopped. I've had a look at adding an override but that points to the management server rather than the instance itself.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    There are for option for us to override a monitor ot rule:
    For all objects of class:             
    Class            
    When you select this option for your override, the override settings apply to all objects in the class at which the rule or monitor is targeted.
    For a group            
    When you select this option for your override, the override settings apply only to members of the group. The rule or monitor without the override settings continues to apply to all objects in the targeted class except for those objects that are also members
    of the group used for the override.
    When you create a group, you save it to an unsealed management pack. However, an element in an unsealed management pack, such as an override, cannot reference an element in a different unsealed management pack, such as a group. If you are going to use a group
    to limit the application of an override, you must either save the group to the same unsealed management pack as the override, or you must seal the management pack that contains the group.
    For a specific object of class:             
    Class            
    When you select this option for your override, the override settings apply only to the specified object. The rule or monitor without the override settings continues to apply to all other objects in the targeted class.
    For all objects of another class            
    When you select this option for your override, the override settings apply only to objects of a class other than the targeted class. The rule or monitor without the override settings continues to apply to all objects in the targeted class.
