Dead area in menu bar

With OS X 10.5.7, there seems to be a dead area in the very top of the menu bar that, when clicked, deactivates the current window within an app, resulting in all of the menu items going dim.
Anyone else see this problem and/or any fixes reported?
thanks - b

Thanks for the response, guys. Here's the rundown:
- seemed like a reboot helped, but after closing the laptop and reopening, the problem reappeared.
- more detail on symptom: I think upon further reflection, clicking in the top pixel row on screen stays in the application (or Finder), but deselects the current window. If the app has a Window menu, I'm able to select a window from that dropdown.
- on the latest reboot, the problem reappeared
V.K. : Tried the terminal command you recommended after latest reboot -- didn't help.
Any other things to try?
Best -

  • Online PDF files in Explorer 9 have no menu bar.

    Online PDF files open OK in Explorer 9 but there are no menu bar (save, up down, ect).  If I save the file using Windows and then open the files, Adobe reader diplays correctly with the buttons.  If I open a PDF online using Google Chrome, the menu buttons appear normally.

    Thank you Pat for the fast reply.  OK, I clicked on the F8 key and it does bring up the menu bar, but none of the buttons work.  Any other suggestions?

  • Migrating from eVC++4.0 to VS2008: Menu Bar not coming for class inherited from CProterty sheet

    We are migrating code developed in eVC++4.0 to Visual Studio 2008. We are facing a Problem as descripted below. We are using Pocket PC 2003 emulator.
    We are creating a class inherited from CPropertySheet. As below:
    In Header File:
    class COptionsSheet :
    public CPropertySheet
          DECLARE_DYNAMIC(COptionsSheet)
    #if(WINVER == 0x400)// This works for MenuBAr inherited from CDialog classes.
          CCommandBar m_cb;
    #else
          CCeCommandBar m_cb;
    #endif
    public:
    virtual BOOL OnInitDialog();
    We are drawing menu bar on the property window as below:
    In .CPP file:
    IMPLEMENT_DYNAMIC(COrderSheet, CPropertySheet)
    BEGIN_MESSAGE_MAP(COrderSheet, CPropertySheet)
    ON_COMMAND(ID_CUSTOMER_COLLECTPAYMENT, OnCustomerCollectpayment)
    ON_WM_INITMENUPOPUP()
    ON_NOTIFY(GN_CONTEXTMENU, 0, OnContextMenu)
    END_MESSAGE_MAP()
    BOOL COrderSheet::OnInitDialog()
    BOOL bResult = CPropertySheet::OnInitDialog();
    m_cb.Create(this);//This we have changed for VS 2008 as menu was not appearing for class inherited from CDialog class as well. In eVC++
    4.0 code we have used. Please see m_cb in header file discription
    m_cb.InsertMenuBar(IDR_ORDER1);// This calis unable to draw mwnu bar
    CMenu *pMenu = CWnd::GetMenu();
    //pMenu becomes NULL in very next line as we are passing it as parameter below.
    gPromotion.LoadSalesPromotions(pMenu,
    "Sales", SRC_TRACE_START);
    We tried this as well but it’s also not working:
    CMenu *pMenu = new CMenu;
          BOOL cehckStatus = pMenu->LoadMenu(IDR_ORDER1);
    SetMenu(pMenu);
          CRect r;  GetWindowRect(&r);
          r.bottom += GetSystemMetrics(SM_CYMENU);
          MoveWindow(r);
    Do we have to change or add something more for the menu bar in case of Property Sheet. Is there any change between eVC++ and Visual studio 2008 that we need to incorporate here.

  • After updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google,yahoo, Facebook (message,notification,profile,home) and others site are disabled. How can solve this problem?

    after updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google(web ,image,video,map etc),yahoo, Facebook (message,notification,profile,home) and others site are disabled. even I cant log out from different sites cz the log out bar is completely disabled. I tried with Firefox 4;5 and 6, same problem exist . I tried by active all add ons for facebook, same problem exist. If I use internet explorer , I don't find such problem with it.
    How can I solve this problem?

    Thanks a lot for your swift response. And sorry if it was a bit too hectic to go through my detailed query (which I did because it was misunderstood when I asked previously). As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
    BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
    Thanks for your help; hope this wasn't extremely long.

    When is select Bookmarks from the Menu Bar, at the very bottom are a bunch of bookmarks. How can I move these in groups to a folder or folders?

    The easiest way to move bookmarks around is in the Bookmarks Organizer, which at some point was renamed the Library. To open it, you can choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks or press Ctrl+Shift+b.
    (Please note that the sort order of the Library dialog doesn't actually carry over to the menu. To sort the menu alphabetically, it's easiest to open the Bookmarks Sidebar, right-click the words Bookmarks Menu and choose Sort by Name.)

  • The menu bar and task bar are missing. I tried opening in safe mode like instructed but there is no firefox button and I tried opening with shift key down but it doesn't open in safe mode.

    all that is showing is bookmark tabs. I can't search or open my home page. I don't have a fire fox button at the top to click on to open in safe mode.

    # Maybe you are in ''Full screen'' mode. Use the '''F11''' key to enter or exit this mode.
    # Press the '''Alt''' key and while keeping it pressed, press these keys: '''V T M'''. Do you see the menu bar now?

  • Mozilla crashed yesterday and now bookmarks are not showing along the left side of page as they did before. They are on the menu bar but hubby does not like this location. Anyway I can get it back to the left side of the page?

    This spring we changed from IE to Mozilla after upgrading to Win 7. Everything has been fine with Firefox until yesterday when it crashed when I attempted to open an email. Since then the bookmarks (or favorites as my husband calls them) have not been in their usual place which was along the left side of the page. They are located in the Bookmarks bar at the top of the page but husband prefers the old IE way which we had until yesterday PM. Is there any way that we can get them back to the left side of the page other than going back to IE? Now that I have gotten used to Firefox I like it just fine.

    *You can open the Bookmarks in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > Bookmarks (Ctrl+B)
    *You can open the History in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > History (Ctrl+H)
    Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
    You can find toolbar buttons to open the bookmarks (star) and the history (clock) in the sidebar in the toolbar palette and drag them on a toolbar.<br />
    Firefox 4 versions and later have two bookmark buttons with a star in the Customize window.<br />
    One star button has a drop marker that open a Bookmark menu.<br />
    The other star button without the drop marker opens the bookmarks in the sidebar.<br />

  • My address bar and menu bar are missing, unable to back up history or bookmarks..

    I unchecked menu bar then unchecked address bar. Now I can't right click and check them back to make them appear. Now I can't back up my history or my bookmarks. I have no help> or menu.

    <u>'''Can't see the Menu Bar'''</u> (File, Edit, View, History...Help)? Hold down the key ( key in OSX) and press the following letters in this exact order: V T M
    The Menu Bar should now be displayed permanently, unless you turn it off again (View > Toolbars). Turning the Menu Bar on and off is a new feature in version 3.6.

  • I accidently unmarked the book marks tool bar, the tool bar and the menu bar how do i get them back ?becaus now only the tabs are visible and i cant access my features or book marks

    i was getting to know my firefox so i accidentally unmarked the menu bar the book marks tool bar and the tool bar. so now only my tabs are visible and i cant get to any of my add-ons or extensions.
    and even surfing the net has become difficult cause there is almost nothing i can do with a new empty tab.
    how can i get these bars back. i tried taking the cursor up to the thin line above the tabs and the window border but the menu to mark the above mentioned features does not appear any more.
    i tried restarting firefox several times but it didn't work. i even uninstalled and completely downloaded a new version of firefox and installed it but the problem still persists.
    i am operations system is windows XP.

    Firefox 3.6+ versions have a feature to allow the user to hide the Menu bar.
    Hit the '''Alt''' key to temporarily show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark. <br />
    The F10 can also be used on most PC's to temporarily reveal the Menu bar.

  • How do i get rid of these dumb icons on my menu bar. they are not useful and they take up too much room. why did you do this?

    i just upgraded to the new version of firefox. for some inexplicable reason, you've added icons to the left of my personal menu choices in the menu bar. these icons are purely decorative, they take up too much room, and now i can't display as many clickable items in the menu bar. extremely irritating. if you are going to add junk, at least give us the option to not display it. is there a way that i can turn off the display of these useless icons?

    thank you! that worked! appreciate how quickly and accurate the support was.
    that said,
    it would be nice if the icons were the add-on,
    and the default was no icons.
    i'm sure the majority of your users would prefer function rather than fluff.
    thanks again, mj

  • Icons in menu bar and standard menus are invisible!

    I'm having an issue with OS X 10.8.2 on my 15" (not Retina) Macbook Pro (late 2011, Core i7 2.4 GHz w/ 16GB RAM and SSD);
    The majority of system icons in the menu bar "extras" area (that is, to the right near the date/time in the menu bar) are blank. The area where the icon would be located is responsive to clicks, and drops a menu item down upon click, but the icons themselves are invisible. The same goes for Spotlight which has a spot for it's icon and responds to the hotkey of Apple + Spacebar, but the icon itself is invisible. The only icons that are visible are third party programs that run and place themselves there such as Little Snitch, and the battery low ("red" battery) indicator icon; other battery icons are invisible.
    Also invisible/blank are the icons for going back and forward in a Finder window as well as the back/forward icons in System Preferences sub-dialogs. The icons for choosing labels, changing the way Finder windows display (their view options), and a few others that I cannot name as I cannot see them are invisible as well. Icons that would normally display to the left of "All My Files", "AirDrop", "Applications", "Desktop", et cetera in the Finder window do not display, either.
    I have tried installing the 10.8.2 Combo Update and using the Disk Utility "Repair" and "Verify" Filesystem options but neither fixed the issue. I have tried deleting the cached plist files for the SystemUIServer as well but there was no change in the icon display (or, that is, lack of display!).
    I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 (including the Combined Update) on the late-2011 Macbook Pro 15" w/ 2.4 GHz Core i7 (default 4GB memory and 750gb HDD; upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a Crucial M4 256GB SSD). I cannot recall if the problem started after I updated any system software or not; I upgraded to 10.8.2 via buying OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store so that I would have a copy on USB to install after replacing my HDD with my SSD. Everything worked fine on fresh installation, and I am not sure at what point the icons disappeared.
    Does anyone have any insight into this problem, and more importantly, how to correct it? Please see the screenshots below for a proper illustration of the problem I am experiencing. The sole icon visible, with the two columns, is Little Snitch 3.0.
       ^-- Clicking the menu bar battery icon (except, there is no icon!)
       ^-- Finder window with the icons for back/forward, view options, icons for location list items on the left, etc. missing
       ^-- System Preferences dialog, with icons for the back/forward function missing.
        ^-- Help window with the icons for back/forward and some other function missing.
    Thank you in advance!

    I have a similar issue. When the computer goes into "Hibernate" mode -- that is, it loses power while sleeping and it writes the contents of it's memory to disk in order to boot into that exact configuration when woken up -- many of my icons when Apple-Tab'ing to another application appear as static. They look like a slightly colorized version of the "static snow" you see when tuning into a station that doesn't exist on a UHF antenna television. Also, icons in Chrome such as web sites "favorite icons" or favicon.ico (the icons that appear in the URL bar and bookmarks) will be scrambled in the same fashion , at first , until the actual icon is loaded.
    Between this, my menu bar and finder icons not displaying, and being unable to boot into safe mode, I'm getting quite ******. I have no idea what the **** is going on with my Macbook Pro. The issue of the scrambled icons actually existed prior to installing an SSD and doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I may end up throwing in the towl and re-installing the operating system but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen. It seems the latest update, 10.8.2, is absolute garbage.
    What the ****, Apple? And I really don't want to take the computer to the morons at the Apple Store. They are not "geniuses" by any measure.

  • I just upgraded to mountain lion. I am unable to use airplay mirroring through my apple tv. They are both on the same network. It says a airplay icon should appear in the menu bar but it isn't there. What am I missing here?
