Deadlocks and with (nolock) hint

Hi we run std 2008 r2.  Can a query with the hint "with (nolock)" on all tables ever be involved in a deadlock?

the documentation says schema locks (sch-s) don't block other queries.  So unless sql overrides the hint, I'm not understanding.  If it can only happen when sql overrides the hint, I'd like to understand when sql might make that decision.
Just for your reference.
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic842499-146-1.aspx
Please note that in some cases Optimizer might think to behave differently even when query hints are used. You cannot always say optimizer would only make decision based on Query hint. Although its highly unlikely for NOLOCK to cause deadlock but it can.
I would not argue about definition of deadlock it does not matter here.

    Pages for iPad is not recognizing the password I assigned to a document.  I included a hint, and I know I am entering the password associated with the hint.  Is there anything I can do to access my document?  i quite the Pages app and restarted it.  Now I guess I'll reset the iPad and see if that helps.   Thanks!

    Interesting that one does not need the password to delete using Finder.
    The Pages password protects the contents of the document.  If there were a Finder password, it would protect what you might think of as the "file wrapper" ... the stuff around the file content.
    Glad it's not vital.  I have to say I only pasword protect those Pages documents that are, in fact, vital.
    Best of luck.

    My mac keeps asking for a password when I try to install adobe flash player. Even with the hint I'm not getting it and also tried uninstall and the same thing occurred.

    It's referring to the MAC password that you have setup.
    A software prompts for a password only when there are restrictions set on the user account for unauthorised access to system files and folders.

  • Error: Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement, DBCC proccache will clear the probelm

    SQL Server: 2008 R2 SP2
    Before describing my problem, I have gone via the forum, there is no view or functions inside my stored procedure
    When running a particular stored procedure inside crystal report, the error " Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement" comes once every few weeks. After I clear the query cache plan, it works again for few weeks and the problem
    comes again. During these few weeks, there is no restart or query plan clearing.
    If I run the stored procedure inside SSMS, where the SQL statement is copied and pasted from SQL profiler during crystal report run, there is no error.
    I discovered running in SSMS and crystal report generate 2 different query plans even I copied the SQL from SQL profiler, I have actually saved the query plans. Unfortunately, this forum does not accept attachments, or otherwise I will post my query plans
    here.
    There is one thing I notice about the query plan is during nested loop operation, there is a warning "no join predicate". I don't use any views or UDF in the statement, nor did I use pre-1992 ANSI join syntax. However, I did use table variables.
    My guess is whether this will cause " Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement", after I clear the cache, I run crystal report again, and I look at the plan again, the "nested loop no join predicate" warning is gone.
    Running this stored procedure took 1 second maximum, even when this error is popping up, it pop up within 1 second.
    DBCC checkdb has been run
    The same stored procedure running by crystal report in a SQL 2008 (non r2) live environment has no problems, so I am thinking this is R2 specific problems.
    The "nested loop no join predicate" error SQL statment is below, no views, no udf, but table variables
    INSERT @ChequeAccount
    SELECT        PS.PaySummaryID, PS.EmployeeID, PS.CostCentreID,
                (PS.GrossPay    + PS.LumpSumA + PS.LumpSumB    + PS.LumpSumD+ PS.LumpSumE+ PS.ETP+ PS.PaymentsAfterTax    - PS.DeductionsAfterTax
     - PS.Tax- PS.ETPTax    + PS.TaxRebate) * -1 AS Amount,
                CGLM.GLAccountID
    FROM Pay_Summary PS JOIN Input_Sheet ISH ON PS.InputSheetID = ISH.InputSheetID  AND  ISH.PayrollID = @binPayrollID
    AND PS.PaySummaryID NOT IN (SELECT PaySummaryID FROM @ChequeAccount)
    JOIN Payroll P ON P.PayrollID = ISH.PayrollID AND P.EmployerID = @binEmployerID
    JOIN CustomGLFixMapping CGLM ON CGLM.EmployerID = P.EmployerID AND CustomGLFixMappingNameID = 1 AND CGLM.CostCentreID IS NULL

    The error Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement can occur when you use the NOLOCK table hint, or use the command SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED. That is, so-called dirty reads. The error is not related to the
    query plan per se, but when scanning a table, the storage engine will use an IAM scan rather than following the clustered index. If there is simultaneous activity, the storage engine may detect this and abort the operation to avoid returning incorrect data.
    Or it may not detect it, and return uncommitted data or fail to return committed data.
    All of these effects are transitory and they will not show up when you are alone on the system, only when there is concurrent activity in one or more of the tables in the query.
    Using dirty reads is a risky business for the reasons explained above, and it takes careful analysis to understand whether you can live with the errors you can get from a particular query. The error about data movement can be handled: trap the error and
    resubmit the query. But what about spurious incorrect results?
    If you believe locking to be a problem, you should consider setting the database to READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT
    and take out all use of READ UNCOMMITTED/NOLOCK. When the database is in READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT, readers read from the snapshot and only see committed data without blocking writers. This has some other effects like requiring a bigger tempdb,
    and there is a risk for other types of concurrency errors, but they tend to be smaller risks.
    I discovered running in SSMS and crystal report generate 2 different query plans even I copied the SQL from SQL profiler,
    This is because SSMS by default runs with SET ARITHABORT ON. I discuss this in more detail in this article on my web site:
    http://www.sommarskog.se/query-plan-mysteries.html
    However, as I said, this problem is not related to the query plan as such, although some query plans are more susceptible to this error than others. (All plans are suscpeitble to produce incorrect results).

  • Problem with Shape Hints

    My professor and I are both stumped, so maybe someone can help me out?
    I'm using Flash CS4 (on a mac) and I'm trying to use shape tweens between two parallelograms. They are shapes and not symbols, since I hear you can't shape tween symbols.
    The transition is sometimes funky, so I try using shape hints to keep it from tangling. Sometimes they all work perfectly fine, sometimes only 1-2 points cooperate, and sometimes Flash ignores them altogether.
    They are snapped to the appropriate vertices, they're in the right order, and they're the right colors to signify they've been placed properly (none are red). I also started with "a" as the top left and placed them counterclockwise, which the Adobe tutorial said to do. I've consulted a dozen or so other tutorials and none of them address this problem. I don't think it's the computer - I've tried it on my laptop and several of the desktops in the design labs and ran into the same problem.
    Is anyone good with shape hints that can tell me what I'm missing?

    I've been trying it and Flash is being consistently inconsistent. I'm doing the same thing to dozens and dozens of squares and still can't find any rhyme or reason, it just works some times and not others. I thought it might have to do with the top left corners being moved to the not-top-left, but when I adjusted that it only worked for a few things. I'm just gonna accept defeat, I'm just surprised that I've got the same problem on every computer I try but can't find anyone else experiencing it.

  • Oracle Ignores hint in One Instance and uses the hint in another instance

    Hi Oracle World,
    I am experiencing a strange problem in Oracle.
    We have two oracle servers: one for Test and one for Production.
    We have exactly the same code for a view in both the systems:
    The code is as follows:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FORCE VIEW V_FT(...................)
    AS
    SELECT /*+ star_transformation fact (FT) */
    FT.*, AH.ACCT_1, LH.REGION, FH.FNCT_1
    FROM
    LOCATION_HIERARCHY LH,
    ACCOUNT_HIERARCHY AH,
    FUNCTIONAL_HIERARCHY FH,
    FACT_TABLE FT
    WHERE
    LH.COMPANY = FT.COMPANY
    AND AH.ACCOUNT = FT.ACCOUNT
    AND FH.FUNCTIONR = FT.FUNCTION;
    When I see the execution path:
    In Test box the Explain plan is as expected: It takes the Star_transformation hint into account, converts all three reference table joins to bitmap and performance is good.
    But In Production, It tatally ignores the table name from the hint.
    Also it converts all the tables names to lower case: though it shouldn't impact, I have also tried to give the table names in lower case and then tried. Same issue.
    Tried with NO_MERGE hint. It was pretty good in Test but same issue in Production: it ignoes the table name from hint.
    I have taken out the table name from test and then tested. Now both the explain plans match. That proves oracle ignores the table name in Production.
    We have compared all the parameters in both. They are 100% same. All indexes are analyzed. Can anyone please help what could be the fundamental difference that causes this difference?
    Production takes 8 minutes for a specific query whereas Test returns the same query in 45 secs. Data volume is also not very much different except few hundreds.
    Any pointers please?
    Thanks & Regards
    Saswati

    It is enabled. As I have mentioned we have compared all the parameters in both.
    All v$parameter, init.ora settings everything is same.

  • SQL query performance difference with Index Hint in Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    I was having a problem in SQL select query which was taking around 20 seconds to get the results. So, by hit and trail method I added Index Oracle Hint into the same query with the list of indexes of the tables and the results are retrieved with in 10 milli seconds. I am not sure to get How this is working with Indexes Hint.
    The query with out Index Hint:
    select /*+rule*/ FdnTab2.fdn, paramTab3.attr_name from fdnmappingtable FdnTab, fdnmappingtable FdnTab2, parametertable paramTab1 ,parametertable paramTab3  where FdnTab.id=52787 and paramTab1.id= FdnTab.id  and paramTab3.id = FdnTab.id  and paramTab3.attr_value = FdnTab2.fdn  and paramTab1.attr_name='harqUsersMax' and paramTab1.attr_value <> 'DEFAULT' and exists ( select ParamTab2.attr_name from parametertable ParamTab2, templaterelationtable TemplateTab2  where TemplateTab2.id=FdnTab.id  and ParamTab2.id=TemplateTab2.template_id  and ParamTab2.id=FdnTab2.id  and ParamTab2.attr_name=paramTab1.attr_name)  ==> EXECUTION TIME: 20 secs
    The same query with Index Hint:
    select /*+INDEX(fdnmappingtable[PRIMARY_KY_FDNMAPPINGTABLE],parametertable[PRIMARY_KY_PARAMETERTABLE])*/ FdnTab2.fdn, paramTab3.attr_name from fdnmappingtable FdnTab, fdnmappingtable FdnTab2, parametertable paramTab1 ,parametertable paramTab3 where FdnTab.id=52787 and paramTab1.id= FdnTab.id and paramTab3.id = FdnTab.id and paramTab3.attr_value = FdnTab2.fdn and paramTab1.attr_name='harqUsersMax' and paramTab1.attr_value <> 'DEFAULT' and exists ( select ParamTab2.attr_name from parametertable ParamTab2, templaterelationtable TemplateTab2 where TemplateTab2.id=FdnTab.id and ParamTab2.id=TemplateTab2.template_id and ParamTab2.id=FdnTab2.id and ParamTab2.attr_name=paramTab1.attr_name) ==> EXECUTION TIME: 10 milli secs
    Can any one suggest what could be the real problem?
    Regards,
    Purushotham

    Sorry,
    The right query and the explain plan:
    select /*+rule*/ FdnTab2.fdn, paramTab3.attr_name from fdnmappingtable FdnTab, fdnmappingtable FdnTab2, parametertable paramTab1 ,parametertable paramTab3  where FdnTab.id=52787 and paramTab1.id= FdnTab.id  and paramTab3.id = FdnTab.id  and paramTab3.attr_value = FdnTab2.fdn  and paramTab1.attr_name='harqUsersMax' and paramTab1.attr_value <> 'DEFAULT' and exists ( select ParamTab2.attr_name from parametertable ParamTab2, templaterelationtable TemplateTab2  where TemplateTab2.id=FdnTab.id  and ParamTab2.id=TemplateTab2.template_id  and ParamTab2.id=FdnTab2.id  and ParamTab2.attr_name=paramTab1.attr_name)

    stg.DOC_doc=ORDERS.order_doc AND
    stg.ref_doc_num=QUOTE.quote_num AND
    QUOTE.s_no = ORDERS.s_no';
    This query is running for ever.
    If i create a table and insert with append hint, it will complete in 10 min.
    I know, the append hint will bypass redolog and insert above HWM.
    But my above code also a direct load and why it is taking this much time?
    My db is running in archive log mode. But i don't want to log the info in redo.
    Regards
    Govind

    I don't think so. /*+ APPEND */ is probably what you are thinking of. But even if it isn't direct load, inserting into a tablespace that isn't totally fragged might not be too slow for you. I'm just suggesting a test since you weren't getting any direct answers.
    I actually haven't done any testing on parallel with execute immediate either. I don't know if EI imposesl certain limitations on that or not.
    Anyone?
    Update: Actually, you are correct. Append is the default mode for a parallel insert. So that would make me start looking at side affects of the Execute Immediate.

    If all you did was rename your ID, you can go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted, then sign back in with your renamed ID.  Deleting the account only deletes the account and any data you are syncing with iCloud from your phone, not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing accounts, your data will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.
    If, however, you are changing to a new account with a new ID, choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted.  Then choose Merge when you sign into the new account and turn your iCloud syncing back on to upload your data to the new account.
    Before deleting the account, save you photo stream photos to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll).

  • Proc_getObject with nolock causes "read operation on a large object failed while sending data to the client"

    SharePoint 2013 code for the SharePoint Config database stored procedure dbo.proc_getObject has been changed from SharePoint 2010 with the difference of select with nolock.
    I am seeing numerous Error 7886, Severity-20 errors nightly:
    "A read operation on a large object failed while sending data to the client. A common cause for this is if the application is running in READ UNCOMMITTED isolation level. This connection will be terminated."
    Here I have commented out "with (nolock)" to 'fix' the error and to align the store proc with SharePoint 2010 code :
    ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[proc_getObject]
    @Id uniqueidentifier,
    @RequestGuid uniqueidentifier = NULL OUTPUT
    AS
    SET NOCOUNT ON
    SELECT
    Id,
    ParentId,
    ClassId,
    Name,
    Status,
    Version,
    Properties
    FROM
    Objects --with (nolock)
    WHERE
    Id = @Id
    RETURN 0
    How is this stored procedure called and for what use?
    Why did Microsoft make this change to SharePoint 2013 - some performance gain through dirty reads at the cost of stability? Or what could be a reason for this to happen that can be fixed?

    GetObject retrieves any farm object that is selected (by ID). Changing this is obviously not supported, and NoLock was used to (help) prevent locks when performing a select query.
    I've never seen this issue, and would guess it is unique to your environment given this is such a core piece of the SharePoint infrastructure.

  • Executing a query with parallel hint

    Hi folks,
    I see a lot of queries executing with parallel hint in our database. Please advice me on couple of questions.
    1. How do i find the all the unix slave process ids associated with a statement executing with parallel hint. For example if a statment has 8 in the parallel hint then it will start 8 parallel process. I need the process ids of those 8 parallel process.
    2. i see a lot of updates on a table and this table is a master table for a snapshot. So the updates are delaying the snapshot refreshes. Is there a way to find out the session id which is making the updates on this table.
    Thanks a lot for your support.
    Karthik

    1. The executing slave processes share the same sql_addr, sql_hash_value, sql_id as the master process in v$session, when they are actively executing.
    2. The sql_text identified by sql_addr, sql_hash_value or prev_sql_addr, prev_hash_value will show you the update statement, when the update is happening or has just happened.

    With about 1500 bookmarks and just 4 active Firefox extensions on my new laptop (Dell XPS L502, Core i7, 6GB of RAM, Win7 64-bit Ultimate) my Firefox boots up and works real slow. by slow I mean it boots up in 15 seconds; and with 3 tabs open when I switch tabs, it takes 5 seconds to switch to the new tab some of the times!). Internet Explorer and Chrome work much faster and I think this is not normal for Firefox. what can be the problem?
    Can this be because of my VGA card? my system has 2 VGA's; the 2GB GT540M Nvidia graphic card which is not active by default for Firefox and an Intel on-board VGA which is working by default for normal usages like browsing.
    I do not think this is a virus or anything, I have Updated malware and virus protection; and my RAM and CPU are not more than 25% loaded when running Firefox.

  • How to sync 2 different Mac users using the same Apple ID and with out mixing each other info?

    How to sync 2 different Mac users using the same Apple ID and with out mixing each other info?
    We are two people using three difrent Macs, 1 Iphone and 1 Ipad with separate USERS  on each Mac but sharing the same Apple ID: xxxxxx
    I set up the first user to iCloud and it was OK but when I set up the second user to use iCoud the first users's info gets mixed with the second user's info?
    Do we have to set up a diffrent Apple ID for each other?
    Sometime ago I added my friends E mail (yyyyy) to the main Apple ID (xxxx) as for using his E mail account (to separate our e mail accounts, and it's working ok) but now when I try to create a new apple ID whith the same friend's e mail (yyyyyy)  it says that his mail (yyyyy) is already an apple ID when the Apple ID is really my E mail (xxxxx)... any clue?
    Thanks

    I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered
    Go here > https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
    Manage your Apple ID and see if that does the trick
    Hope that helps
