Deb Squeeze 32bit 10g XE install, but no APEX

I have a Debian Squeeze system. I downloaded and installed the debian (stable) distribution of the Oracle 10g XE database from the Oracle download page (behind the archived versions tab). So, Oracle is running. But I can't access the homepage.
I'm confused by several things:
Is Tomcat required to run apex? -- "well known" port 8080 is the same port that the apex listener defaults to - Also the APEX listener supplied as a separate product from Oracle is a war file.
Is the Oracle 10g XE, Homepage (accessed at http://localhost:8080/apex) the same as the apex_listener and apex engine found separately on the Oracle download page?
(the engine is aka Oracle APEX standalone product currently on release 4.1
the APEX listener is on version 1.1.3)
There are no war files in the Linux, deb or rpm downloads for 10g, XE from Oracle. The DatabaseHomePage.sh script indicates that apex is war. Is it?
I edited the script (as it appeared in the deb file) - it had a MS (Windows) variable in it:
#!/bin/sh
# DatabaseHomePage.sh - part of deb package.
for i in firefox mozilla konqueror ; do
if test -x "/usr/bin/$i"; then
# /usr/bin/$i http://127.0.0.1:%httpport%/apex
/usr/bin/$i http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex
exit $?
fi
done
Should there be something called apex in the deb download?
thanks in advance.

Hi Jari,
Is it OK to have Tomcat installed and using port 8080 and have apex also being served on port 8080?
I can connect from the command line to my localhost sid (XE), and I can also connect via sqldeveloper.
So, I confident that the oracle for Debain (for 32 bit) systems from the Oracle website installs and works properly. What I can't get working is APEX.
The listener port for XE was set to port 1523, so as to not interfer with another instance that on port 1521.
The http port that I originally put sid XE on during installation (during the "oracle_xe configure" exercise) was 80. What I expected would happen would be that Oracle would put an apex.html file in my /var/www directory that would kick off apex, but there was nothing. Now I sort of understand that Oracle apex is part of the database, and it is an http connection from the db to the browser - I think !!??
I guess it goes through Apache also?
The way I think my Oracle instance is set up is to serve http via URL:"http:/localhost:80/apex" (I use Iceweasel). It doesn't work. Is there some way to check how my database (10.2 xe) thinks it is set up?
What I ultimately after is getting apex working on my localhost.
In the process I've installed the db, apex 4.0.2 standalone and listener 1.0.2 along with Tomcat 6. So, things are a bit muddled.
Now I'm back to just tying to get EPG working with a browser.
thanks

• Calling report from form on which IDS 10g is installed

Dear All,
I have a form which calls a report. I am able to run this form and report from my application server 10g. But before deploying it on the server I would like to test it from my pc where Developer suite 10g is installed. i.e running a report from the form in on IDS client pc. I have made changes in formsweb.cfg and default.env file. I am starting a report server from the command prompt using rwserver server=rep_oraclag_OraBi. But when I run the report it says that unable to run report.

Dear All,
Thanks for the reply. I am able to run my report from the form through my application server which is installed on Linux. My question is how to run report on the development PC where IDS 10g is installed. Before deploying it on the server, I would like to test it from my development PC. Is there anyway I can do this? I have started on temporary report server using rwserver server=server_name. I have set path in formsweb.cfg and default.env. But when I run report from the form it says unable to run report. I am able to run all my forms on my development pc. But not able to run any report.

• HP Solution Centre reports unable to start as printer not installed; but I can print!!!

My Officejet Pro 8500 A909g suddenly stopped working. It was connected to my HP Pavillion dv9700 by wireless and has been for the last 6 months or so. My laptop is running on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I have made no software or hardware changes since I last used the printer; just a few hours ago.
I can now print again (having run through all the steps listed below), but can no longer use the HP Solution Centre to run any tasks as it reports that it 'cannot run because the device installation is not complete'
In order to get back to printing, I did all the usual of shutting everything down...computer, router and printer...all to no avail.
Then I downloaded the latest printer software from the HP site (OJP8500V909_Full_14.exe) and first ran the uninstall section of that software; removing ALL of the HP software from my machine.
I used CCleaner to remove all traces including those from the registry as well.
I uninstalled and re-installed the software.... 3 times. (at least it gave me a chance to catch up on reading a good Terry Pratchett book)
Each time I varied the conditions relating to my antivirus... Kaspersky. First by leaving the AV running; then by switching off the AV and switching on the Windows firewall; and then finally by switching off both the AV and the Windows Firewall.
On each occasion, during the installation, the software 'finds' my printer on the network; reports that it is installing, but when it gets to the end of the installation and moves on to the part where it reads 'configuring the printer', it gets stuck and after waiting for some time with the green progress light moving from side to side, nothing further happens.
I have downloaded and run various 'help' bits from the HP site ; HPHNDU.EXE and HPPDU.EXE and printed the test pages from them as well as printing from Word and Adobe pdf; so there is now no problem in printing.
Now, when I run the installation software again without uninstalling, depsite inputting the IP Address of the printer, I still get the error message that no printer could be found on the network?????
What have I missed here??
Thank you

One very important place to remove the other software is in the "server properties" in your printer folder. You need to click on your printer icon in the printers folder> then look for "server properties" , click it> go to drivers> remove all instances of your first printer you originally uninstalled. For some reason the drivers get hung in this and have to be removed in order for you to configure your device- Let me know of any questions

• Active ODP when both 9 and 10g are installed...

I have both ODP 9i and ODP 10g (along with the Oracle 10g client) installed on my workstation. How does one set up one or the other to be the 'active' ODP client? For instance, I have an application that I developed under ODP 9i... because I developed this under ODP 9, I want it to run under ODP 9 on my or anyone else's workstation. However, when I view it in the Visual Studio 2003 IDE, it shows ODP 10 as the 'active' client. Even when I run it, I find it is using ODP 10 (I know this because I have a Help...About screen in my runtime that displays the loaded assemblies) Even if I install it on a plain workstation (i.e. no Visual Studio 2003) with both 9i and 10g installed, and even though it was fully compiled using 9i, it still shows up as using the 10g ODP client. I don't want that at this time - if I compile it under 9i I want it to use Oracle 9i... Otherwise, what is the sense of having both clients on the machine?
So.... bottom line... is there a way to set one of the ODP clients to be 'active' even though both clients are installed?
Thanks in advance.
Tom

Hi,
By default, ODP installs publisher policy files to redirect to the latest version of ODP, which would make an app compiled with 92x odp use the 10x odp instead. If you dont want that to happen, delete the oracle.dataaccess publisher policy files from the GAC, but then you'll get no redirection at all. IE, you'll have to have the exact version the app was compiled with on that box to run the app.
Or, as msolnit pointed you to above, there's an article on the MS site that explains more about it, and other ways to prevent it on a per-application basis (see the Bypassing Publisher Policy section of that article)
Cheers, hope it helps.

• Oracle 10G client Install on Windows

We recently had our Oracle client upgraded from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10G. Now when we sign into the Oracle Enterprise Manager Console, select a user schema and right click on a table to View/Edit Contents, the records display but when i select a record and try to right click to Add Row / Delete all i get is a solid gray bar, so i can't delete the record. I am thinking this may be a permission problem of how the client was installed, but have no idea where to start. Any help from anyone will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same exact problem as documented in the following article but the solution documented in this article unfortunately did not apply:
http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa;jsessionid=8d922006ce67d1ef91f6c484a4ba035f8a2d3e0851a.rQjwahaM-AXMmkbGngTxpQOUaNaKaxD3lN4OagSLb3mIaN8IbwSLa30Qn3qP-x4KbhiKbA8Omh8Q-wOSa30K8Oz1iNyKb2TRnk8LaN8IpR9vmQLz-AbJpgaLc34SaNmMah0S8OexhOaOgzXApR9PplaOagbynknvrkLOlQzNp65In0__?messageID=1177518&#1177518

Thanks for the follow up. Yes, I do have two Oracle Homes on the server: One is for an Oracle Database Server 9i and the other is for the current install of Application Server. Both listeners are up and running and they are both listening on different ports. Having both of these services started simulatenously should not be a problem given that their listening on different ports, correct? I used the lsnrctl status command in each of the Oracle Homes and I didn't notice anything in the output that stated the listener was not running. The last piece of output states that "The command completed successfully" Anything, I should be looking for in the output?

• Can I use existing 10g iAS install with Application Express?

I apologize if this has been addressed somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer yet.
I have a 10g DB installed on machine A, and have been following the instructions to install Application Express. Instead of installing another instance of HTTP_Server (from the companion CD) on machine A, I have machine B with a full 10g iAS install on it (discoverer, portal, infrastructure, etc). I would like to use machine B as the front end to access htmldb. Machine B has 2 oracle homes, one for the infrastructure and one for the BI tools/portal stuff. Which one do I configure for htmldb? From reading in this forum I think I can use the dads.conf file instead of the marvel.conf file (which doesn't exist) to add the pls/htmldb info, but I can't figure out which one to edit. I probably have something else wrong somewhere, but this would help narrow things down. Currently when I go to the following url http://machineb:7778/pls/htmldb I get "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable".
Thanks in advance for any help.
Rhonda

Sure, you can use the Application Server, no need to install another one.
You would add the configuration to the BI tools/portal stuff Oracle Home, not the infrastructure.
You don't need the marvel.conf explicitly (but this is installed per default when you install the http server from the 10g companion CD).
You could just add the DAD configuration to the dads.conf.
To make it a bit simpler I would do the following:
1) remove the entries for /pls/htmldb from your current dads.conf (if they exist).
2) follow the instructions here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/howtos/howto_useoas10g.html
And use the following for the contents of the file marvel.conf (make sure to change it accordingly for your environment (changes to make are bold):
AddType text/xml xbl
AddType text/x-component htc
Alias /i/ /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db/htmldb/images/
<Location /pls/htmldb>

• 10g client install -- "Error in accessing system registry"

Yes, I am the administrator - there is just one account on my machine and it is me.
I am attempting to install 10g client in hopes of fixing another problem. Everything is a problem it seems.
When I launch setup.exe I get ...
"Error in accessing system registry. You may not have enough permissions to modify registry. Installation cannot continue."
My environment is ... Windows 7 Pro, I do have an Oracle Express Edition installed but since I am having a 32-bit vs. 64-bit issue with an app I am developing in C# 2008 Express, I thought I would try installing the 64-bit 10g standard edition client.

I didn't know this about Windows 7...
http://www.blogsdna.com/2168/windows-7-how-to-open-elevated-command-prompt-with-administrator-privileges.htm
I had to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. I was tipped off by your link which had paragraph 1.4 Managing User Accounts with User Account Control and states,
To ensure that only trusted applications run on your computer, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows 7 provide User Account Control. If you have enabled this security feature, then, depending on how you have configured it, Oracle Universal Installer prompts you for either your consent or your credentials when installing Oracle Database. Provide either the consent or your Windows Administrator credentials as appropriate.
You must have Administrator privileges to run some Oracle tools, such as Database Configuration Assistant, Net Configuration Assistant, and OPatch, or to run any tool or application that writes to any directory within the Oracle home. If User Account Control is enabled, and you are logged in as the local Administrator, then you can successfully run each of these commands in the usual way. However, if you are logged in as "a member of the Administrator group," then you must explicitly invoke these tasks with Windows Administrator privileges. All the Oracle shortcuts that require Administrator privileges will be invoked as "Administrator" automatically when you click the shortcuts. However, if you run the above tools from a Windows command prompt, you must run them from an Administrator command prompt. OPatch does not have a shortcut and has to be run from an Administrator command prompt.
I followed the instructions concerning the elevated command prompt and then tried the Oracle 10g standard edition client install. I got past the registry problem but then I ran into a Universal Installer 10.2 problem. A window popped up stating, "Abnormal program termination. An internal error has occurred. Please provide the following files to Oracle Support:"
"Unknown"
"Unknown"
"Unknown"
Maybe that is due to 10g not being supported on Windows 7. So NOW I will try 11gR2. :-)

• 32bit Runtime Environment - install after initial oes11 inst

Hi,
I've got an oes11 Server that came "preinstalled". Someone else installed it. During the initial sles11/oes11 install they did not install the "32bit runtime environment" but now I would like to install it. So, yast2 - oes install config and try to add (check the box next to) the 32bit runtime environment. Yast2 accepts it and there is a green check mark next to it. I click accept and it goes straight to the linker / configuration of the oes services. It does not install anything , etc... I tried "installing" it then rebooting the machine, no luck. Everytime I install it and then go back into yast2, it doesn't seem to get installed... Is it not possible to install the 32bit runtime environment after the initial install?
Thanks for your assistance and time.

Btw, when in yast2 and looking at patterns in the software manager, on the left hand side "32bit runtime environment" is unchecked but in the details (right window) several pacakges are shown to be installed but not all.... ?? Is my 32bit runtime environment installed or not? I get the impression the it is not "fully" installed. I got no error messages during the install and have since tried to install it without goind through the "OES Install and configuration" option and instead going directly through the Software Management Option. Same Problem, if it even is a problem?
Once again, thank you for your time and effort.

• Does iTunes come with 32bit and 64bit install?

I have Windows 7 and it's a 32bit and 64bit Gaming Laptop G73SW.
I've done all the troubleshoot tips, which has just made my computer worse.eg all icons changed, things now missing, so probably have to do a System Retore to get it all back.
Every time i speak to Apple, they're suggestions just make my computer stuffed, iTunes takes over all my programs etc.
Simply put: Does iTunes come with a 32bit and 64bit Install??? If not i won't be using that program.
Which makes it hard for my line of work atm as an Alpha and Beta Games Tester for many Private Platforms i play on.

Well genius, it's either a 32bit or 64bit system, it cannot be both.
Please learn to clearly describe the situation or it is unlikely that appropriate and relevant assistance will be provided.
Keep in mind, these are user to user support forums. The attitude that you spewed above is unlikely to get you any further assistance.

• Issue with ARD 3.0 not pushing out Installs, Says its installing but not

Issue with ARD 3.0 not pushing out Installs, Says its installing but not
Has anyone seen this. It seems to happen with ARD 3, have not seen this in ARD 2.
I go to the Install Packages on Target Computers, put in: 10.4.7 Combo (for the correct CPU, PPC or Intel), security updates, QT 7.1.2, etc.
Push it to Macs I can connect to, observe and control.
The progress bar copies the files (in some instances it does not) and then it just hangs there, bar does not move, Installs never finish, not good, very odd.

Is it the same clients that have the problem every time? Are those clients doing anything cpu intensive? Have you tried rebooting the affected clients?
Maybe try a smaller package on those clients.
