DECODE function with ' ' and ' '

I need of a command to compare intervals of dates, similar to DECODE, only that using '<' and '>'.
Example: if the date will be minor who ' 2005-10-01 ' then return ' problem ', else if the date will be minor who 2005-11-01 and greater that 2005-10-01, then returns ' ok '
I tried to use the function ' decode ' with the function ' sign ', but this only functions for numbers and it does not stop dates.
Former: Using a column that contains numbers, ok.
SELECT decode(SIGN(col_number-10),-1,'<10',decode(SIGN(col_number-20),-1,'<20',decode(SIGN(col_number-30),-1,'<30'))) col_number
FROM table
If to use a column that contains dates (dates or timestamp), problem (types of incosistentes dates: it waited NUMBER got YOU DATE).
SELECT decode(SIGN(col_date-10),-1,'<10',decode(SIGN(col_date-20),-1,'<20',decode(SIGN(col_date-30),-1,'<30'))) col_date
FROM table
Somebody has some idea?

Somebody has some idea?Yes, CASE().

  • Problem using DECODE() function with a Query of Queries

    I
    posted
    on my blog about an issue I was having trying to use the PL/SQL
    DECODE() function with a Coldfusion Query of Queries. This function
    works fine when you query a database for information. However, when
    you query another query, it seems that CF doesn't recognize it. I
    got errors stating that it found a left parenthesis where it
    expected a FROM key word. Here is a simplified version of what I am
    trying to do:
    quote:
    <!--- Simulated query; similar to what I was calling from
    my database --->
    <cfscript>
    qOriginal = queryNew("Name,Email,CountryCode",
    "VarChar,VarChar,VarChar");
    newRow = queryAddRow(qOriginal, 5);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "Name", "Joe", 1);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "Email", "[email protected]", 1);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "CountryCode", "AMER", 1);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "Name", "Sally", 2);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "Email", "[email protected]", 2);
    querySetCell(qOriginal, "CountryCode", "AMER", 2);

    FROM qOriginal
    ORDER BY CountryCode
    </cfquery>

    So running this returned the following error:
    Query Of Queries syntax error.
    Encountered "(. Incorrect Select Statement, Expecting a
    'FROM', but encountered '(' instead, A select statement should have
    a 'FROM' construct.
    Does anybody know why this doesn't work? Is it just not
    supported? Please note that I have also tried to use the CASE()
    function instead of DECODE() and that resulted in basically the
    same error. For now I an looping over my distinct query with a
    switch statement and manually loading a new query with the data how
    I want it. But it would be a lot cleaner and less code to have the
    DECODE() to work. Thx!

    DECODE() is an Oracle function, not generic SQL. Q-of-Q is a
    very limited subset of SQL and lacks many functions and clauses
    available in standard SQL, especially what you may be used to using
    in your particular RDBMS.

  • Performing math on Decode function tags and moving averages

    I have a query shown below to create columns for my report. Can I use the field names as shown in bold to perform math functions? Is there an easy way to do this?
    select Data_date,
    SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'SEF_F0348I',avg_value,NULL))"TE_Flow_mgd",
    SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'L_STEbod_con',avg_value,NULL))"TE_BOD_mgl",
    "TE_FLOW_mgd" * "TE_BOD_mgl" * 8.34*.45359 as "KG_BOD"FROM daily_tag_data
    Where data_date >= to_date('12/31/2002','mm/dd/yyyy')
    GROUP BY data_date;
    Also how would I perform a seven day moving average on "KG_BOD"
    Thanks - Very new at this.

    If you want avoid a sub-query, try this...
    select Data_date,
    SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'SEF_F0348I',avg_value,NULL))"TE_Flow_mgd",
    SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'L_STEbod_con',avg_value,NULL))"TE_BOD_mgl",
    SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'SEF_F0348I',avg_value,NULL)) * SUM(DECODE(tag_id,'L_STEbod_con',avg_value,NULL)) * 8.34*.45359 "KG_BOD"
    FROM daily_tag_data
    Where data_date >= to_date('12/31/2002','mm/dd/yyyy')
    GROUP BY data_date;
    just replace the 'column-alias' with the actual arithmetic fuction...

  • About Decode Function in oracle(on 28th)

    Hi all
    Can i use Decode function with Distinct as following.
    SUM(DISTINCT DECODE(LR.QUESTIONNAIRE_ID,62, L.WORK_SPACE))
    Regards

    Hi,
    The argument to SUM can be any numeric expression, including a DECODE statement that evaluates to a number.
    "SUM (DISTINCT ..." is very suspicious. If you have three rows, with values 1, 1 and 3, the "SUM (DISTINCT" is 4. Is that what you want?
    Perhaps your problem is that whenever you have more than one row, they will always be identical (e.g., a one-to-may join), so you have rows with 1, 1, and 1, from which you want to return 1. Most people do that by adding the value to the GROUP BY list, or by using MAX or MIN instead of SUM: they get the same results, but the code is clearer, and it works on non-numeric columns.

  • Error while replacing IF statements with DECODE function in procedure

    Hi All,
    I have created a procedure which has nested IF statements. Now I want to replace the IF statements with DECODE functions to improve performance.
    Procedure:
    IF (var_int_sev = '0')
    THEN
    var_sev := '2';
    ELSE
    SELECT sev
    INTO var_int_sev
    FROM errorconfig
    WHERE errorcode = var_errorcode;
    var_sev := var_int_sev;
    END IF;
    I converted the above IF statement into DECODE function as mentioned below:
    var_Sev := DECODE(var_int_sev,0,2,SELECT severity FROM errorconfig WHERE errorcode=var_ErrorCode)
    But it throws below error at the select statement used inside DECODE.
    Error(58,51): PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "SELECT" when expecting one of the following: ( - + case mod new not null others <an identifier> <a double-quoted delimited-identifier> <a bind variable> avg count current exists max min prior sql stddev sum variance execute forall merge time timestamp interval date <a string literal with character set specification> <a number> <a single-quoted SQL string> pipe <an alternatively-quoted string literal with character set specification> <an alternativ
    Can someone help me in converting the IF to DECODE in the above case. Also how can we use a select statement inside decode.

    instead of trying to rewrite all your code and hoping that the performance will be better, it's a better option to investigate and find out which part of your application is slow

  • DECODE function to validate date value and sort the records

    Hi Friends,
    I am looking for some query which can give me the required output,
    I need to do this using SQL query only and I have tried using the MIN() and MAX() functions it was working fine with limited data, now after inserting the last record(in the below table) which has date for start_range and end_range in(mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss) format.
    Because the data type is VARCHAR2 if I am using the MIN() function it is sorting as a string value, hence the min date is incorrect. I tried using validating the value to date or non date and tried to using MIN() and MAX() functions using the DECODE function, I am getting this error "ORA-01840: input value not long enough for date format".
    select table_name,
    DECODE(substr(START_RANGE,3,1)||substr(START_RANGE,6,1)||substr(START_RANGE,11,1)||substr(START_RANGE,14,1)||substr(START_RANGE,17,1),'// ::',
    to_char(min(to_date(start_range,'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss')),'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),min(start_range)) MIN_RUNS_START_RANGE,
    DECODE(substr(END_RANGE,3,1)||substr(A.END_RANGE,6,1)||substr(END_RANGE,11,1)||substr(END_RANGE,14,1)||substr(END_RANGE,17,1),'// ::',
    to_char(max(to_date(END_RANGE,'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss')),'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),max(END_RANGE)) MAX_RUNS_END_RANGE
    from MY_TABLE
    GROUP BY table_name,
    (substr(START_RANGE,3,1)||substr(START_RANGE,6,1)||substr(START_RANGE,11,1)||substr(START_RANGE,14,1)||substr(START_RANGE,17,1)),
    (substr(END_RANGE,3,1)||substr(END_RANGE,6,1)||substr(END_RANGE,11,1)||substr(END_RANGE,14,1)||substr(END_RANGE,17,1))
    Can sombody please advise what is the best way I can query this data with the required output.
    The following are the source table and records and the out put records using the sql query.
    MY_TABLE
    TABLE_NAME(VARCHAR2),START_RANGE(VARCHAR2),END_RANGE(VARCHAR2)

    TABLE2,ABCD,GGGG
    TABLE3,01/12/2010 00:00:00,01/31/2011 23:59:59
    Thanks
    Kalycs

    i also think this is a very bad table design ...
    but if you are not able to change it, you could split the select (date and non-date data) and combine the result with UNION like this:
    with t as
    SELECT 'TABLE1' table_name,'1000' start_range,'10000' end_range FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE2','ABCD','EEEE' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE3','01/12/2010 00:00:00','12/31/2010 23:59:59' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE1','10001','20000' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE2','EEEF','GGGG' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE3','01/01/2011 00:00:00','01/31/2011 23:59:59' FROM dual
    SELECT table_name,
           TO_CHAR(MIN(TO_DATE(start_range, 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')), 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),
           TO_CHAR(MAX(TO_DATE(end_range, 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')), 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
    FROM t
    WHERE start_range LIKE '%/%/%:%:%'
    GROUP BY table_name
    UNION
    SELECT table_name,
           MIN(start_range),
           MAX(end_range)
    FROM t
    WHERE start_range NOT LIKE '%/%/%:%:%'
    GROUP BY
        table_name;
    TABLE_ MIN_VALUE           MAX_VALUE
    TABLE1 1000                20000
    TABLE2 ABCD                GGGG
    TABLE3 01/12/2010 00:00:00 01/31/2011 23:59:59

  • BETWEEN FUNCTION WITH IN A DECODE FUNTION IN A CURSOR

    The following below is my query..I have to get the hours,min and seconds from a 'yyyy-mm-dd-24hh.mi.ss' value and check if the time is between 12 am to 6 am , then write it with one value else write an another value..I am trying to use 'BETWEEN' function in decode function but i am getting error.....Can we use BETWEEN function with in decode function or is there any other way
    set serveroutput on
    declare
    cursor cur_dte is select lst_upd_date from EMPLOYESS ;
    begin
    for i in cur_dte loop
    DECODE (substr(trim(i.lst_upd_date),12)) ,between '00.00.00.0000' and '06.00.00.00.0000' ,101,102);
    dbms_output.put_line(i.lst_upd_date);
    end loop;
    end

    First of all. If you are in PL/SQL then CASE is just a more colmplex expression then IF THEN ELSE. I usually prefere If then else, but for some rare cases.
    The other issue is that you convert a datetime value into a string. This is wrong. it opens up all possible kinds of cenversion bugs. Stay with date or timestamp as long as possible.
    The solution depends a little upon the datatype of your lst_upd_date column.
    Here is a pl/sql solution assuming it is DATE.
    The TRUNC function can be used to reduce a datetime to a day or to an hour.
    declare
       cursor cur_dte is select lst_upd_date from employees ;
    begin
       for i in cur_dte loop
         if trunc(i.lst_upd_date,'HH') between trunc(i.lst_upd_date) and trunc(i.lst_upd_date)+6/24 then
            dbms_output.put_line(to_char(i.lst_upd_date,'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS'));
         end if;
       end loop;
    end;
    /But a pure SQL solution is much better.
    Here is how you implement it using CASE in SQL.
    example using pure sql
    select e.*,
            case when trunc(e.lst_upd_date,'HH')
                   between trunc(e.lst_upd_date) and trunc(e.lst_upd_date)+6/24
            then 101
            else 102
            end as "early_morning_check"
    from employees e;And if it is a timestamp column then you could use the EXTRACT function.
    select e.*,
            case when to_number(extract(hour from e.lst_upd_date))
                   between 0 and 6
            then 101
            else 102
            end as "early_morning_check"
    from employees e;You might want to consider if date values like 06:45:00 should be included or not.

  • Case statement and Decode function both are not working in Select cursor.

    I have tried both the Case statement and Decode function in Select cursor, but both the things are not working. On the other hand both the things work in just select statement.
    See the first column in select (PAR_FLAG), I need to have this evaluated along with other fields. Can you please suggest some thing to make this work. And also I would like to
    know the reason why decode is not working, I heard some where Case statement do not work with 8i.

    know the reason why decode is not working, I heard some where Case statement do not work with 8i.
    Does this mean you are using 8i? Then scalar sub queries - selects within the select list, are not supported, along with CASE in PL/SQL.

  • OWB3i - Validate with DECODE function

    Hi,
    in OWB 3i when I validate an expression defined inside an expression operator with DECODE() function (which is not include in default transformation) come this error:
    Line 1, Col 1:
    PLS-00204: function or pseudo-column 'DECODE' may be used inside a SQL statement only
    but it seems only a warning because when i generate the scripts and run no other error happen and all works fine.
    Regards

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum!
    When you use a default value, the last argument to DECODE is the actual value you want as a default.
    For example:
    SELECT       ename
    ,       deptno
    ,       DECODE ( deptno
                 , 30     , 'Sales'
                      , 'All others'     -- Default value
                  )                 AS dname
    FROM      scott.emp
    ORDER BY  ename
    ;Output:
    ENAME          DEPTNO DNAME
    ADAMS              20 All others
    ALLEN              30 Sales
    BLAKE              30 Sales
    CLARK              10 All others
    FORD               20 All others
    JAMES              30 Sales
    JONES              20 All others
    KING               10 All others
    MARTIN             30 Sales
    MILLER             10 All others
    SCOTT              20 All others
    SMITH              20 All others
    TURNER             30 Sales
    WARD               30 Sales
    I hope this answers your question.
    If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all tables involved, and also post the results you want from that data.
    Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
    If you can show the problem using commonly available tables (such as those in the scott schema) then you don't need to post any sample data; just the results and the explanation.
    Always say which version of Oracle you're using (e.g., 11.2.0.2.0).

  • SQL*Loader and DECODE function

    Hi All,
    I am loading data from data files into oracle tables and while loading the data using SQL*Loader, the following requirement needs to be fulfilled.
    1) If OQPR < 300, RB = $ 0-299, SC = "SC1"
    2) If 300 < OQPR < 1200, RB = $ 300-1199, SC = "SC2"
    3) If 1200 < OQPR < 3000, RB = $ 1200-2999, SC = "SC3"
    4) If OQPR > 3000 USD, RB = > $3000, SC = "SC4"
    Here OPQR is a field in the data file.
    Can anyone suggest how do we handle this using DECODE function? Triggers and PL/SQL functions are not to be used.
    TIA.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

    The following expression gives you different values for your different intervals and boundaries :
    SIGN(:OQPR - 300) + SIGN(:OQPR - 1200) + SIGN(:OQPR - 3000)

    well i have to be honest, but i don't know if it the vista you use has any significance for this. but you can try.
    okay follow:
    1: click "start" on the status line on the buttom of your screen.
    2: then click on "all Programs" and find "Accessories" and find the "command prompt"
    3: Right click with your mouse "command prompt" and click on "run as administrator"
    (as you has click'd on "run as administrator", "command prompt" should appear.)
    4: when it appears you need to type this "netsh windsock reset"
    5: wait for your computer to registrer the command you gave it, and restart your computer.
    then erverything should be pretty much as good or better then new.

    I have a photo of an ice surface and another of a flower. Now I want to create a merged photo with the flower lying under the ice. I understand that I shall use the function "Layer" and have even read in the manual and looked on a video, but that information is not sufficiently detailed for me. I have tried several options, but I come now way. Generally it seems that your information is only for the ones who can, not for the people who can´t although it is we who really need to learn. Please give me a step by step (click by click) information on how I can get the ice above the flower and then make the ice partly transparent so the flower is seen underneath. Please send me an e-mail Erik Solbu [email protected]

    Open a new document big enough for your image. Then additional open your ice and flower image as well. Copy each and paste it into your blank document. They will be placed on their own separate layers.
    Make sure in your layers panel. (Bottom right) the ice is above the flower, by dragging it in place. In that same layers panel click the ice layer to select in and find the opacity meter above. Drag to the left until you get the effect you desire.

  • Problem with decode function.

    Hi,
    Can anyone of you help me out in solving this?
    It is like i wish to give different select statements according to the value of a parameter entered by user USING DECODE FUNCTION.The select statement contains some other select statements inside it.So when i execute it,it is giving error like 'ORA-00913-too many values(even when i enclose select statements within brackets).

    ORA-00913 too many values
    Cause: The SQL statement requires two sets of values equal in number. This error occurs when the second set contains more items than the first set. For example, the subquery in a WHERE or HAVING clause may return too many columns, or a VALUES or SELECT clause may return more columns than are listed in the INSERT.
    Action: Check the number of items in each set and change the SQL statement to make them equal.
    the above is from oracle documentation. the brackets is not the problem, u must be using multiple items in the integrated decode queries. If the problem still exists post ur DML for further analysis.
