Decrease client imeout against DFS-R shares

We are configuring DFS-R to act as a high availability service for our file shares. I realize there are some caveats but I can live with those. What I am looking to do though is reduce the timeout value for clients from the default two minutes to seconds
- even if this increases network load.
IE. A client connects to a dfs share that is replicated and works in the share through Explorer. The server the client is connected to, drops off line or is shutdown for maintenance, the users connected to that server then experience the hour glass for up to
two minutes until the referral ttl expires and is processed and the client connects to the second server that also hosts the dfs share. Its this hour glass interruption and long failover time our users are complaining about because if they try and click another
folder they get the Windows is Not Responding. If they are trying to access a mapped drive then obviously they can click and wait but we are looking for minimal interruption. Yes, clustering is an option but we are starting to span campuses and dfs-r reduces
the spof at the share level in a cluster.
Any pointers would be great!

  • Running Oracle 9i client code against an Oracle 10g install on PC

On Unix I am able to run Oracle 9i client code against an Oracle 10g install by setting ORACLE_HOME to the Oracle 10g install location and then creating a symbolic link (example: ln -fs libclntsh.so.10.1 libclntsh.so.9.0).
On PC (in particular XP SP2) I want to do something similar without using "junctions" or "junction points". Is there a way to set an environment variable or ini file to have my 9i client code point to the right libraries? I keep getting an error saying that my client code will not run due to "orasql9.dll" not being found. The "orasql10.dll" is installed on my machine.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Even your application built on 9i, doesn't mean it will not work with 10g database. From what I can see, running 9i executable under 10g installation to create mixed blood breed will do more harm than good. Not only it's not supported but also the outcome is unpredictable.

Is it possible to add a dfs file share path ?

    Hi,
It seems we cannot use a DFS file share path here.
    I found a similar thread:

In reply it mentioned "the share needs to be provided from a 2012 server directly as it needs to manage the permissions and share permissions directly".
As you tested you get an access denied error when trying to use a DFS share.

  • Windows 7 SP1 client file lock on network share hosted ny WIndows 2012 Server

    Hello
I have one strange problem after migration from Windows 2003 Server to Windows 2012 Server R2 Standard.
All migration tasks went well but two things do not work.
In Computer Management you have The Opened Files feature and if you open any file that is located on the network share hosted by Windows 2012 R2 form Windows 7 SP1 and then close it
it remains open in the Opened Files tab (even if you wait an hour).  There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
The session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Can someone help me with that ?
    About the environment:
It is one server Domain migrated form 2003 to 2012R2.
The domain and forest level was raised to 2012 R2.
I have made clean install of Windows 2012 R2 and then migrated AD.
    Best Regards

  • Oracle Forms 6i client/server against an Oracle 10gR2 database

    Hello
    We have the following situation:
Oracle Forms6i/Reports6i client server application against an Oracle 8i cost-based database. we want to migrate this application
    step 1:
Migrate the database to 10gr2, but do not touch the client application
    Go live
    step 2:
Migrate the development environment to 6i webforms.
    Production environment stays client server.
With this construction we can still create new patches/functionality.
    step 3:
    Migrate to Forms10gR2 (and reports)
I know Forms 6i is not supported anymore.
My question is on step 1.
When I read NOTE: 338513.1 entitled "Is Forms/Reports 6i Certified To Work Against Oracle Server 10g Rel 1, Rel 2 or 11g?" carefully
it says that Forms 6i is not certified against 10gR2.
On OTN I read several posts that this works ok (assuming you do not use the wrong character set).
I also read on OTN that patch 18 (which is only supported for EBS customers) is certified against 10gR2.
    The questions:
    - Is Oracle Forms patch 18 certified against an Oracle 10gR2 database? (or only for EBS)
    - Is there anybody out there that can confirm that Oracle Forms 6i C/S works against Oracle 10gR2
    Regards Erik

    Thank you.
    Now I found it.
But how do I read that page.
    It says:
    Client Certifications
    OS      Product      Server Status
    XP      6.0.8.27.0 Patch 18      N/A      Desupported
    Application Tier Certifications
    OS      Product      Server      Status
    XP      6.0.8.27.0 Patch 18      9.2      Desupported
    XP      6.0.8.27.0 Patch 18      10g      Desupported
    I read this as follows:
Patch 18 was certified agains a 10g database in a webforms environment.
No client server mentioned and Server 10g , so no 10gR2!
    I'm I right?
    Regards Erik

  • Clients see 0KB free on share

I have some users that are connected via smb to a share on the server. They have reported that occassionally it will show that 0KB is free, even though there are ~2TB free on that share. This is only happening to clients that mount the share with SMB. If I tell them to eject the share and re mount it as AFP, it reports the correct free space. If they eject that and go back to SMB it still reports 0KB. A restart on the local computer they are having trouble with fixes this. What could be the problem? All clients are running 10.4.8, server is 10.4.8

    This is a client-side problem.
Older versions of the Mac OS, and most Windows versions can't understand volumes larger than 2TB. At the time they were developed 2TB seemed like an unimaginable amount of space and so programmers made assumptions that included artificial limits like this.
Consequently when the OS does come across such a volume, the actual size overflows the apps' expectation and you often end up with a negative value, which is even scarier than '0KB available'.
In either case, the problem is purely cosmetic.

  • Windows DFS folder share between networks

Does anyone know if the below is possible?
Say you had 2 totally separate local networks (e.g. no connection to eachother). If you had a server with 2 nic's, 1 on each network, could you setup a share on that server which would allow access from 1 network to the other via the server share?
I thought it might be possible using DFS but it doesn't work.

  • Win 7 Client cannot access Win 2012 share by domain name

    Hello Everyone,
We have Windows 2012 R2 Server configured as Domain cum File Server Role,
There are 20 Win7 Clients / Domain Users who access and used their specific folder on server with \\Servername\Foldername

This happen to any users anytime and the same time other users can access their folder by name,

    This is a kerberos issue.
By default, tickets (especially the TGT which is issued at logon) have a
live time of 8 hours or so (can be adjustet). If this ticket expires and
cannot be renewed (due to a lack of connectivity to a DC or whatever
infrastructure issue), Kerberos fails and ressources cannot be accessed
    via name.
IP on the other hand always uses NTLM and thus still works.

  • SBS 2008 - Windows 8.1+ clients trouble accessing file server shares

I have now upgraded 1 Windows 8 machine to Windows 8.1, and also clean installed another with Win 8.1 update 1 today, and both machines have trouble accessing the SBS2008 file server shares by UNC. If I browse by IP address of the server it seems to work
flawlessly. The odd thing is that it's sporadic. So if I browse in explorer to "\\*netbiosname*\share" the Win8.1 machine will sometimes be able to access the share, and other times it will fail with a "network unable to reach location etc.."
error. When it does work, it can take up to 5-10 minutes while explorer is frozen before the share is accessed. We're running quite a few Windows 8 machines without a problem, but it seems to be a specific problem with 8.1. Any idea?

This doesn't seem to fix this specific problem. I had a few days of "luck", but now it's back. I just upgraded another co-workers machine to Win8.1 and he advised me that he's been having the same problem even with the above fix applied. His issue
is when opening an office document that's located on the file server using location "\\servername\filename.xlsx", it takes a very long time (minutes) to open the excel file. This was happening to me as well, and if I tried to browse the network during
this period, Windows Explorer would sometimes give me path not found, and unspecified error. I will try and capture a screen of the error when it occurs. Any ideas??
edit: I have also noticed an unresponsive Windows Explorer for a few seconds to a minute over the last few days, which is a pretty good indicator that it's still happening on my machine.
The odd thing is, if I use the IP address of the file server, everything is fine. I changed all of my links to use the IP since October when Win8.1 was released to combat this problem, and only changed them back to the server name for testing since I want
to start deploying Win8.1 to others in the office. Unless I can fix this bug, they'll have to be stuck on Win8.
    Thanks,
    kk

  • Best options for migrating Samba shares to DFS

My team is in the process of setting up a new domain for our organization. We want to slowly migrate users from non-AD accounts and workstations to AD (2012). One of the pieces we are having trouble coming to a consensus on is the best method(s) for migrating
the Samba shares from our RHEL server to DFS.
One idea was to join the Samba server to the domain then add the shares into DFS to allow the non-AD users to continue to use the old server and the new users to use the DFS server. As we had time (small team) we would join the individual workstations, have
the users start using their AD credentials, and move their mapped drives to the DFS share. Later, we could add a DFS server for replication and eventually drop the Samba server once everyone was migrated.
Another opinion that we should simply copy the departmental shares across to the DFS server and move whole departments rather than individual users, locking down the old Samba shares as we go.
These are pretty much theoretical at this point as I can't seem to find any documentation on how best to migrate from Samba to DFS. I would appreciate ideas.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You could map drives to old server using the DFS server credential:
    net use \\DFS server\\share  Z:  /user:domain\username password
Then run the robocopy command to migrate the shared folder from the old server to the DFS server:
    robocopy “\\source server\drive$\folder path” Z:\ /COPYALL /B /SEC /MIR /R:0 /W:0 /LOG:c:\logs\robolog.txt /NFL /NDL
For more detailed information about the robocopy command, you could refer to the artice below:

  • Time Machine AFP shares for client machines

I have migrated a Mac Mini from 10.6 Server to 10.7 Server. This is my own internal mail server etc so it is not too critical.
I have a DROBO connected to the mini and the DROBO has been partitioned into 4 partitions. Three of the partitions are shares which I used for the Time Machine (TM) backups on my MBP, my wife's iMac and the mini server. The fourth partition was for shared files. All this worked well in 10.6 but it seems broken with 10.7. I did this so I could limit how much space was available for each client machine's TM backup.
First in the Server.app the TM service I though was just for the server but it seems that once you specify this it created a shared folder which serves as a target for client machine backups. There doesn't seem to be a way of designating specific shares for different client machines.
Second, the shares that I used in 10.6 are still there and permissions are correct but even though I can connect to the share via the finder, TM on a client (MBP running 10.7) looks like it stalls during the preparing backup phase then fails.
If you cannot specify individual shares for client TM backups this is huge step backwards! With little or no documentation and a ludicrous dumbing down of the Server management interface I can't see 10.7 server as anything but a toy. Not to mention the switch from MySQL and removal of pptp VPNs this product is just half baked. Sorry but the more I use 10.7 server the less I like it.

Well, it appears to be working. I used the "Connect To Server" option from the "Go" menu of the Finder and connected via IP address. The Mini is set up with a static IP. I'm not sure if it is working consistently, yet. I got one good Time Machine backup so far.
I do seem to be experiencing some inconsistent network behavior as far as seeing the Mini on the network via my Lion machines. It seems to drop off the Finder sidebar for no apparent reason. Will post another update later.

  • InDesign CS4 -- unable to browse DFS share folders?

We've recently purchased a slew of CS4 licenses in anticipation for our company's migration from InDesign CS2 to CS4. However in testing we've noticed what appears to be a bug with InDesign. Anytime we use file browse dialog within InDesign CS4(ex. trying to open a new file, trying to import a file into the current .idd, etc..) we run into an issue where we are unable to browse to any DFS network share. The DFS shares are listed, however they are grayed out and unable to be selected. However, the first time InDesign is run, the shares show up correctly and are able to be accessed. When you close InDesign and re-open it, the DFS links are now grayed out and unaccessable.
InDesign CS2 also had the same issue however there was a workaround available: When browsing for a file in CS2, if you choose the "Use Adobe Dialog" all the DFS shares would then be displayed under the 'Computer' link on the left hand side. However after researching these forums and speaking with Adobe techs there is no such feature available in CS4.
Normally I would assume this was some type of compatability issue with DFS and Adobe products...however every other program in the CS4 suite works perfectly... it's just InDesign that's giving us problems(and of course, InDesign is the program we need the most).
Does anyone have any insight as to how we could possibly workaround this issue? Has anyone experienced any similar issues with DFS links being grayed out in InDesign?
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Thanks for the reply.
Apparently they have tried waiting (quite a while) before trying the delete but no joy they still have to close InDesign or reboot.
