Default Constructor Problem

i am working on a script that will create a square. i have the script working, but it only works when an int is passed in when calling the methods in main. is there a way to make the program construct a square without having to specify the int? here is the code:
public class Square{
     public Square() {
public static void getName(){
     System.out.println("This shape is a square");
public void area(int x){
     double product = x * x;
     System.out.println("The area is " + product);
public void perim(int x){
     int perim = x * 2;
     System.out.println("The perimeter is " + perim);
public static void main(String[] args){
     Square mySquare = new Square();
     mySquare.getName();
     mySquare.area(5);
     mySquare.perim(5);
}

Let the class keep a record of its own dimensions by using a variable, and initialize the variable in the constructor:public class Square{
//Here is the square's dimension:
private int sideLength;
public Square() {
     sideLength=5;   //this is the default length if not specified by user
public Square(int arg) {
    sideLength=arg;
public static void getName(){
System.out.println("This shape is a square");
public double area(){
double product = sideLength * sideLength;
System.out.println("The area is " + product);
return product;
public int perim(){
int perim = sideLength * 4;
//NOT sideLength * 2 !!
System.out.println("The perimeter is " + perim);
return perim;
//good idea to have these too:
public void setSideLength(int arg){
sideLength = arg;
public int getSideLength(){
return sideLength;
public static void main(String[] args){
Square mySquare = new Square(10);
//or could just use:
//Square mySquare = new Square();
//to get default size (5 x 5)
//or could even get size from args[]
mySquare.getName();
mySquare.area();
mySquare.perim();
}

  • De-serialization not calling default constructor ??

    Hi,
    I have a strange problem with serialization (de-serialization, actually):
    I have a bunch of classes that represent the model for my application.
    These classes are organized as a complex tree and come in three flavors:
    public abstract class AbstractIOCLeaf implements IOCElement {
         private String name;
         private transient boolean changed = false;
         private transient LinkedList<ChangeListener> changeListeners;
         protected AbstractIOCLeaf() {
              super();
              name = null;
              changed = false;
              changeListeners = new LinkedList<ChangeListener>();
         } //needed for Serialzation
         protected AbstractIOCLeaf(String name) {
              this();
              this.name = name;
    ...this class is a leaf: it cannot contain other sub-elements.
    public abstract class AbstractIOCList<T extends IOCElement> extends AbstractIOCNode implements ComboBoxModel {
         protected LinkedList<T> list = null;
         protected transient List<ListDataListener> listListeners;
         protected abstract T newElement(String name);
         protected AbstractIOCList() { super();  listListeners = new LinkedList<ListDataListener>(); }
         public AbstractIOCList(String name) {
              super(name);
              list = new LinkedList<T>();
              listListeners = new LinkedList<ListDataListener>();
    ... This class holds a list of elements that are all equal.
    and finally:
    public abstract class AbstractIOCNode extends AbstractIOCLeaf implements ChangeListener, ListDataListener {
         protected AbstractIOCNode() { super(); }
         protected AbstractIOCNode(String name) {
              super(name);
    ... This class holds elements that are all different.
    The actual classes extends one of these following the pattern:
    public class StateMachine extends AbstractIOCNode {
         private StateList states = null;;
         private EventQueue fEventQueue = null;
         private StateMachine() { super(); }
         private StateMachine(String name) {
              super(name);
              states = StateList.newInstance(this);
              changed = false;
         public static StateMachine newInstance(String name) {
              StateMachine sm = new StateMachine(name);
              sm.initialize();
              return sm;
    public class StateList extends AbstractIOCList<State> {
         private StateMachine sm;
         private StateList() { super("StateList"); sm = null; }
         private StateList(StateMachine sm) {
              this();
              this.sm = sm;
         public static StateList newInstance(StateMachine sm) {
              StateList list = new StateList(sm);
              list.initialize();
              return list;
    ...etc. etc.
    I do serialization calling ObjectOutputStream.writeObject on the root object and (obviously) deserialize using ObjectOutputStream.readObject.
    The process works, but it seems that the default constructors in particular AbstractIOCLeaf() is never called while deserializing. First hint to something amiss was the fact that I always had the transient field changeListeners remaining in its default null state.
    Further investigation involving debugging and breakpointing confirmed no default constructor is called in spite of the super(); calls.
    What am I doing wrong??
    Did I miss something about serialization (apparently so, but I cannot understand what!)?
    Side issue:
    I tried substituting ObjectOutputStream.writeObject with XMLEncoder.writeObject, but then I get the error: "Class sun.reflect.misc.Trampoline can not access a member of class com.softin.IOCbuilder.model.IOController with modifiers "private"".
    Aren't those classes supposed to be equivalent?
    Is there any (fast) way to desume the offending member?
    Excuse me for the length of the post and
    Thanks in Advance
    Mauro

    Oops, nevermind. Sorry.

  • Always create any Object even without default constructor?

    hi!
    i'm wondering if there's an easy way to construct an object of a given class?
    let's assume i've got a class
    class MyClass
         public MyClass( OtherClass c)
    }now when i get the constructors for its Class-object with
    clazz.getDeclaredConstructor()
    it will return null;
    ok now i know ther's no default/empty constructor.
    does it make sense to then search for the next constructor with n parameters?
    and then invoke it with nonsense values?
    what happens if the parameter classes also have no default constructor to create parameter objects? like this:
    class OtherClass
         public OtherClass ( MyClass c)
    }now there's a loop between the two constructors and i can't create empty parameter values to invoke any of them!
    i wonder how the serialization engine works then?
    or did i miss something trivial (it's really late here ;) )

    What's the problem? To create a MyClass object, you
    don't need any OtherClass objects. You just do the
    equivalent ofnew MyClass(null)in your
    reflective code.
    slap forehead with toilet
    thanks for the tip.
    as i said there was something absolutely easy, it's tough not seeing the forest for the trees ;/
    But I agree with jschell, if your requirements are to
    create objects of arbitrary classes and call
    arbitrary methods with arbitrary parameter lists,
    then whoever did your design didn't think for long
    enough.WELL. you're absolutely right. but when it's time to process ANY given object there's no reliability on whatever design was chosen. or, would you insist the developer had to provide standatized formats when you write a debugger? no it has to work with any. so must i!

  • Reflection: get an instance of a internal class by default constructor

    Hi there
    first the structure (reduced):
    public class ConvertionFactors { //singelton
    private HashMap<String,Class> factors = new HashMap<String,Class>();
    private class M_TO_FT implements DataFilter{
    public double convert(double value) {

    public DataFilter getFilter(String from, String to)
    String name = from.toUpperCase()+convertionMethodNameSeparator+to.toUpperCase();
    Class c = factors.get(name); //retrieve the class
    Object o = c.newInstance(); //generate a instance.... not working
    return (DataFilter)o;
    The problem i want an instance of the internal class without defining a construktor like
    public M_TO_FT(){} because there are many classes like this one :-(
    (that was already working with a constructor that wants an instance of the container class.... thats what i am missing in the call c.newInstance() which uses the default constructor (i gues))
    i want something like
    new M_TO_FT() ; just the reflection version of it which calls the default constructor
    thanks for help

    i think because i never told the method which is the containing class for this internal class. if i defina a constructor in the inner class it always needs a instance of the containter. by calling c.newInstance() there is no relation to the container class and because the inner class cant exist without the outer class it may not be constructed.
    It is possible to get an instance with "new FT_TO_M();" (the traditional way) with the default constructor but jet i have not found a way to get a instance of a inner class with reflection without defining a constructor.

  • ConstructorDoc always shows a non default constructor

    If the source file has no explicite constructor, the ConstructorDocs of ClassDoc always hold a non default constructor as it seems. If there is an explicite coded constructor, the position of the constructor points to the right position in the file. If there is no constructor in the source, it points to the class declaration. Is this a javadoc bug or has anybody seen this problem before?

    I believe, all you need is to check the method: MemberDoc.isSynthetic() It is inherited by ConstructorDoc from the com.sun.javadoc.MemberDoc interface.
    This method is provided specifically to know (and filter out when needed) if the member is implicitly synthesized by the compiler.

  • Glitches in address fill-ins with nicknames; default font problem; plus other glitches in Thunderbird 31.3.0 and 31.4.0; can I roll back to an earlier version?

    I am unhappy with the recent upgrade to Thunderbird 31.3.0 and now 31.4.0. My bottom line question is whether I can roll back to the previous version, which was working well for me.
    The problems I have encountered include:
    1. I used to be able to enter a single letter in many cases in the address field, and the autocomplete would fill in the entry that I always use with that single letter. That function has been lost, as has auto fill-in based on the nicknames I have entered in my Address Book. I see there is another thread on this problem (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1036962), but no satisfactory answer so far. Entering a single letter now pulls up completely unrelated address entries that may not even have that letter as part of the name, address or nickname for that unrelated address. I have created new nicknames to try to adapt to this problem, but even these new nicknames no longer work with the 31.4.0 upgrade yesterday, forcing me to create yet more complex and hard-to-remember nicknames to pull up my frequent addressees. This is all very frustrating to me, as I depend on speed and ease when creating messages.
    2. Also, I used to be able to enter a single letter in the address field and then use the mouse to click on the "To:" symbol to the left of the next address line to change the next entry to "Cc:"; doing so would then cause the complete address to fill in in the "To:" address field, and make the next field ready for an entry. That no longer works. If I use that technique, the shortcut that I entered in the first field gets included along with the address (if I'm lucky enough to have the address itself selected now, given the problems I've mentioned above). I now have to press "Enter" in order to get the address in the first field to "take" correctly, and then have to click on the "To:" symbol for the next line as a separate action. Just another inconvenience with the new version.
    3. While still on the subject of addresses, personally I see no reason why the address and subject fields should now be colored blue by default rather than appearing as blank, white fields. I far prefer the old look. And I suspect that changing from the blue color to a nice, clean, white field takes time and computer resources that slow things down.
    4. The default font (Times in my case) no longer "takes" when replying to or forwarding messages. I've checked Tools/Options/Composition, and Times is still shown as my default font. However, when I start to type (in a reply with the original message quoted or in a forwarded message), the result is "Variable Width". In order to get Times, I need to highlight the block of text after typing, including the lead-in to the quoted message or the header of the forwarded message, and select "Times" when "(mixed)" shows up. This is a big pain; I often forget to do so and end up having to edit the Unsent Message (which I check before sending) as New and correct the font.
    5. A minor problem: I rely on the reminder to attach a message which shows up when an "attachment-related" word is entered in the body of the message. It has been a wonderful feature of Thunderbird that has prevented me on many occasions from sending off messages without the attachments. However, in the new versions, even if I have indeed added the attachment, a pop-up comes up on sending the message saying there has been no attachment and asking if I want to add one. It's easy enough to just click "No", but it's yet one more unnecessary and distracting step that this new version is requiring of the user.
    I'm really sad to see these various changes/glitches. I love Thunderbird and it bothers me deeply to find myself mired in so many new problems that slow down my work. I would be grateful for any suggestions and advice, and, particularly, for any information as whether I can roll back to the version prior to 31.3.0 that was working well for me.

    Thank you, Zenos. I tried rolling back to v31.2.0, since I had not encountered problems prior to December. However, that didn't help. So I followed your valuable suggestion to revert to v24.6; that seems to have done the trick.
    I would like to mark this problem as "Solved" -- the rollback seems to have worked. However, since my original post was a complex mix of things, before I do that, should I post the individual problem sets that I had noted (address fields/nicknames problems -- numbers 1-3; default font problem -- number 4; attachment reminder problem -- number 5) as separate issues which have not been solved?
    Do you know if these various issues are being worked on? I'm glad to have the temporary fix of rolling back to an earlier version, but I'd like to get back on the current update schedule at some point if and when these problems have been corrected.
    Thank you again!

  • Creating an instance of a class with no default constructor

    Hello gurus,
    I wrote my own serialization and RMI protocol for both C++ and Java that follows closely what the default Java version does. I'm trying to recreate an object on the Java side that was sent over the wire. The first step is to create an instance of the class. How do I create an instance of a class that has no constructor (i.e. the only instances are static, created by the class itself and returned by static methods) or one that has no default constructor (like Integer)? The Java serialization seems to support it but the reflection API doesn't seem to have any support for this (i.e. Class::newInstance() and Constructor::newInstance()). It seems that through the standard API you can only create an object via one of its constructors. There must be a "hidden" method somewhere that allows the Java serialization to create an object without calling a constructor - where is it?
    Dominique

    There must be a "hidden" method
    somewhere that allows the Java serialization to create
    an object without calling a constructor - where is
    it?You are correct, the way in which the Serialization creates Objects is "hidden" deep within the runtime.
    If it were not hidden, you would be able to find it, and use it to violate the integrity of the VM.

    The variable hLaw needs to be initialized - with a default constructor in this case. Class  Law doesn't have any user-defined constructors. Normally, a compiler would implicitly define a default constructor, equivalent to Law::Law() {} . But in
    this case, it can't - Law has a const data member, which must be initialized in constructor (it being const, there won't be any other chance), and the compiler doesn't know what value to initialize it to.
    You can 1) explicitly define a default constructor, and initialize g there, or 2) drop "const" from g (or drop g entirely, seeing as you aren't using it), or 3) give g an initializer, as in "const int g = 42;"

  • Super class default constructor

    Hello,
    I want to clear some confusion. I am studying for the exam. In this particular book an example shows that
    Super class has 2 constructor
    public abc() and public abc(int n)
    Sub class has 2 constructor
    public xyz() and public xyz(int n)
    now when an instance is created for the subclass
    xyz t = new xyz(1)
    It will invoke the super class no argument constructor eventhough a default constructor exist in subclass?
    Regards,
    adil

    Here are the rules for constructors--"ctors" because I'm lazy. Also, because I'm lazy, "super(...)" and "this(...)" mean any super or this call, regardless of how many args it takes, including those that take no args.
    1) Every class has at least one ctor.
    1.1) If you do not define an explicit constructor for your class, the compiler provides a implicit constructor that takes no args and simply calls super().
    1.2) If you do define one or more explicit constructors, regardless of whether they take args, then the compiler no longer provides the implicit no-arg ctor. In this case, you must explicitly define a public MyClass() {...} if you want one.
    1.3) Constructors are not inherited.
    2) The first statement in the body of any ctor is either a call to a superclass ctor super(...) or a call to another ctor of this class this(...) 2.1) If you do not explicitly put a call to super(...) or this(...) as the first statement in a ctor that you define, then the compiler implicitly inserts a call to super's no-arg ctor super() as the first call. The implicitly called ctor is always super's no-arg ctor, regardless of whether the currently running ctor takes args.
    2.2) There is always exactly one call to either super(...) or this(...) in each constructor, and it is always the first call. You can't put in more than one, and if you put one in, the compiler's implicitly provided one is removed.

    This is a question about the synthetic attribute for the default constructor. This attribute has been added at the moment the inner classes have been introduced in the language. I think its purpose is to distinguish methods added by the compiler (like the access methods) to handle the inner classes.
    Synthetic basically means something that has been added by the compiler and that has no corresponding source code.
    Following this, the default constructor (added when the class has no constructor) should also be tagged with a synthetic attribute, shouldn't it?
    Javac 1.4.2 doesn't add this attribute for the default constructor and I was wondering if the version 1.5 would do it.
    Thanks,
    Olivier

    As far as I tested the jdk 1.5 compiler, I found that
    it already tags default constructors with isSynthetic
    attribute. Default constructors are compiler generated
    and I am not sure how it affects the api, if they are
    tagged isSynthetic.No, the 1.50 beta 31 compiler does not tag default constructors with Synthetic attributes.

  • Default printer problems with adobe 10.1.2

    I was having problems printing PDFs since upgrading to 10.1.2.  After reading and trying many recommendations, I happened to notice that my default printer(I have only one printer) was listed twice on the print window.  The first (default) printer is spelled "HP PSC 2350 series" (upper case 'PSC')  The second is "HP psc 2350 series" (lower case 'psc') .  The printer is named 'HP psc 2350 series' in my printers and devices, and if I select this printer, the page will print perfectly.  Now that I have solved my printing issue,  I would like to change the default setting on the adobe print window to come up as the active link, so I don't have to continue to select a different printer everytime I wish to print a document.  The printer by the lower case "psc" name is set as the default printer in printers and devices, and I cannot figure out why it doesn't come up as the default printer on the adobe reader print window.  I also cannot figure out how to change the default in the print window.   An added interesting fact is that I get no response in the print window when I try to select "preferences' or 'advanced' for the upper case 'PSC' printer.
    My computer runs in Windows 7 (64-bit).  The printer is HP psc 2355xi all-in-one.  Any suggestions are much appreciated

    I have not been able to select a different default printer for Adobe,  but I can print if I manually select the correct link everytime.

    I am having the same issue.The correct printer is selected as the default printer on the control panel and there is no driver with the lowercase convention.However, the first printer option that appears is the lowercase convention. Is there any way to select a default printer for specifically for Adobe, as opossed to the PC itself?
