Default RSS reader option

What does the preference in both Safari > Prefs > RSS > Default RSS reader and Mail > Prefs > RSS > Default RSS reader do?
Until now I've been doing all my RSS in Safari, which is OK but not stellar.
Now that Mail supports RSS in 10.5, I'm experimenting with it there. But as far as I can tell, RSS feeds that are subscribed to in either app seem to get updated in either app. So what does the "default RSS feed" do?

Hi
When you open (expand) an RSS feed in either Safari or Mail, either Safari will go to the actual page (if set as the default), or a specific RSS Reader will open.

How do I change the default RSS reader under Mountain Lion and Safari 6?
Removing the configuration preference from Safari 6 was a BAD IDEA!
Anyway, any help will be deeply appreciated.  Thanks.

Use whatever RSS reader you prefer from the very many that currently exist. Find them at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads . You can also find them on the Mac App Store. A good one is NetNewsWire 3.3.2. It's also free.

  • How to set default RSS reader...

    Hi,
how do I set an alternative default rss reader in ML ? I've NetNewsWire installed but when I select a feed:// bookmark in Safari it still goes to the default mailer (Thunderbird) in my case. How can I make NetNewsWire the detault reader?
    Cheers, Fons.

I found and used http://www.rubicode.com/Software/Bundles.html#RCDefaultApp to set NetNewsWire as the default RSS reader. All fine now.

is there a way to make Feedly.com my default RSS reader? I tried using shrook, but it wasn't a good replacement since it doesn't save the list of RSS feeds i feed it.

  • Set Default RSS Reader in Mountain Lion???

So now that Mail & Safari dont have default RSS readers support, how does one change what was previously set?  Somehow the program "Socialite" has been set as my default RSS Feed reader.  I do NOT want to use this program for RSS feeds but cannot seem to find a way to change the default association.

  • Set a default RSS reader when clicking RSS button in Safari?

When I'm in Safari and I click on the RSS button in a web page, it loads up my podcast app (Downcast) which does me no good.  I use Mr. Reader for my RSS reader (it's a Google Reader client) -- how do I get Safari to load that up instead?  And then presumably it would then create a new subscription feed in Mr. Reader for that RSS feed that I clicked on in Safari.

I use Reeder. I thought I had this same problem with the last version of Safari but somehow I was able to turn it off (I want to see it first and choose to add it myself to my RSS reader).
But since Mountain Lion, I haven't been able to turn it off.

  • Is the default "Subscribe to This Page" feature within Firefox a RSS Reader?

    Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know whether the default "Subscribe to This Page" feature within Firefox is a RSS Reader?
For example, I want to subscribe to certain blogs etc., and my research suggested I install Feedly ([https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/feedly/]), which I now have. However, I noticed whilst playing around that within Firefox, the feature to subscribe to a page offers this too - but is the Firefox feature the same as a RSS Reader?
    Thanks in advance
    Y2J

Really, most RSS readers are the same.
In the past I have used the Firefox RSS reader to setup live bookmarks.<br>
Currently I use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/rss-icon-in-awesombar/?src=userprofile RSS Icon In Awesombar] add-on. It functions the same as the default Firefox feature, but to save space I want the button in the location bar.
You can use whatever one you want. As said above, it really doesn't matter.

  • How do I change the default PDF reader from Acrobat Pro to Preview?

Right now Acrobat Pro is set as the default PDF reader in my Safari 3. It's slow and wonky, which I think might be a 10.5 issue. Anyway I'd like to make Preview my default PDF reader for Safari but I can't find where to make this change.

    Hi Harry
You may also have to remove the Adobe PDF plug-in(s) from your Internet Plug-ins folder. If so, create a new folder in the Library where the Internet Plug-ins folder is located, calling it Internet Plug-ins - disabled. Move the file(s) to there. This way, if you need to use Adobe again, it's as simple as moving the file back, then reselecting the option in the Adobe app.
After so, restart Safari and try a PDF.

  • Cron RSS Reader

So I've been using newsbeuter like many people for over a year now. However, the one complaint I and many others have voiced on the forums is that: there exists no cron RSS reader. Sure you can run newsbeuter 24/7 with the auto-refresh feature enabled, but who wants that. So a week ago at the start of the holidays I wrote my own. Now after a week I have seen that it works and that it should be ready to release in beta. Please understand that this is designed in my favorite way; stupid simple. It is source edited and demands only two files: a history file, and the program. I wrote it in python because of the wonderful feedparser library and because this way you can edit your feeds on the fly without needing to recompile.
For anyone who wishes, feel free to play around with this and give me your feedback.
To get it working just run the following to ensure you have the deps:
sudo pacman -Sy coreutils curl python3 python-feedparser youtube-dl
Next put the following source in a file and chmod 700 it. Now you can ./rss or maybe put it in ~/bin and add that to your path so you can run it like any other binary. But wait! Now before you run it, you will more than likely want to edit the config unless you want all of my feeds and just happen to have a /home/keller/downloads folder you want all the stuff put in. To edit the urls just follow the examples I left in. They are in the style ("Name Of Feed", "http:\\example.com\rss\url.xml") where the first entry starts with and additional open brace and then each end in a comma if it is not the last feed entry or a additional close brace if it is. If you don't have anything for the particular category, just use (). Now give it a run by appending the --no-download option. If you don't, it's going to take a while and will work on every feed entry.
    To quote --help:
    Usage: rss [Options]
This is a zero hassle RSS reader. It is designed to be source configured and
run without a care in the world. Cron it, script it, just plain run it...
    Options:
-h, --help Show me this message.
--no-download Do not act on new entries.
    (Simply mark as old.)
    -q, --quiet Don't talk.
    -v, --say-something The opposite of -q.
In terms of action, it will:
First: Append new links to a file called links.html in the downloads folder that you can view with your browser of choice. This is the fastest so you can read your feeds while you wait on the downloads.
Second: Download the attached image from Deviant Art
Third: Download every youtube video at a max of 720p (To speed up the download and conserve bandwidth)
Lastly: Download all of your podcasts
I was debating adding twitter, but I don't use RSS for twitter (or twitter for that matter) so if there is a desire for it (or others) let me know.

That's all folks. If you do give it a try, please give feed back even if it's just that the whole thing sucks. I'd love to know what feeds don't work, if there is anything you want added, or if you just think it's swell.
If there appears to be some interest I'll look at putting this in the AUR. Maybe with a mode for config files so that each user can have thier feeds all independantly checked with each run under cron. Though that'll take some work to get just right so I'm only doing so if people are sure they would like such a feature. So yeah, feel free to ask for the moon, I'll see what I can do in most cases.
Lastly, I am humbly sorry that I suck at documenting how exactly it works here. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to post away and I will do my best to answer them.

This is a shame that Apple doesnt (somehow) make this one of the cross-platform features.
I mean come on, how many of us mac users actually have ALL our computer-using relatives on a mac? In a perfect world, all of us, but reality is, I'm the only one out of about 11 people on my and my wife's side of the family that we share pics of the kids with. Everyone else uses Winblows.
I was pumped when I heard about photocasting. Alas, now that I've tried to make this work smoothly for the novice windows users who want to see pictures of our kids, I realize there is *zero chance* of me being able to use this. There is no way I can see myself sending my 63 year old mother an RSS feed link and having her figure out what to do with it (when she can barely figure out how to look at the pics I send in email he he). If she has to go install an RSS reader, forget it.
Anyway, great mac only feature, but this would be a huge feather in Apple's cap if they could figure out how to serve this up to Windows end users just as effortlessly.

The iPhone does not store email addresses for received mail. The iPhone stores all email addressees for sent mail in a list of previous recipients. The list of previous recipients is not synced with Outlook or any address book, but the list of previous recipients is included with the iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. The auto-addrss feature pulls from your contacts on the iPhone and from the list of previous recipients.
Different from the Mail.app on a Mac, there is no access to the list of previous recipients on the iPhone to remove a previous recipient from the list, or to add a previous recipient to contacts that is not already entered - not at the present time anyway.
The only way to purge the existing list at the present time is by restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Hopefully access to the list of previous recipients will be included with the iOS 5 update.

  • Default PDF reader

    Hello
I have an N97 Mini, bought SIM free. I use it as a mobile office.
    Two problems:
I have installed a freeware PDF reader, and the trial version of Adobe Acrobat (now expired) came with the phone (I think - it may have installed when I bought a license for Quickoffice). I have set the freeware PDF reader as the default (Settings>Phone>Application Settings>Default apps.>Options>Advanced Options>) but it resets back to the trial Adobe app. I want the Freeware PDF reader to stick as the default reader.
Also, I'd like to remove the Adobe Acrobat trial, but I can't find a way todo this.
    Suggestions, please!
