Default values for dependent drop down menu

Hi!
I did create an insert record page that lets the user put in information using text fields. In addition the form has a dependent drop down menu for a category and then depending on the chosen category, the user is presented with choices in a second drop down menu for subcategories.
The insert of the record itself works fine.
The records are then listed in a table. A link to a details page should then list all fields of a chosen record. I have another form sporting them dependent drop down menus again. Since I retrieve a record from the database I would like to have the drop down menus default to the values stored in the database.
But whatever I tried the menus always default to the respective first entries in each menu.
I tried to use the "select value equal to" field in the "insert record" for the category and the "Default detail value" field in the dependent drop down item for the subcategory field.
Any pointers anybody?

I think I have done nearly exactly what you need
I will try to explain
for a start I am working on a art gallery site that has many different artists and many different paintings
I am able to add a new artist and have that artist name appear automatically in a dropdown menu on my add painting form page so that when I add a new painting I do not have to type the arrtists name every time
I am not sure this is what you need but I think maybe....
(i have another site that displays different categories of jewellry... with a form that has same dropdown and can choose product category.... but the process is the same)
the way I did it was to first create an 'artist_info' table in my database and an 'add artist page' pretty simple
Then an painting_pnt table in my database and an 'add painting' page with a form that contains a dropdown menu that is dynamically populated from the artist_infotable... label from the artist_name field value from the artist_id field so the form uses two recordsets.......
Then in my painting_pnt table I have a field that stores the artist_id
So when I add a new artist..... the name automatically appears in the dropdown menu when I add a new painting I choose the artist name and then later I can filter recordsets on my detail pages using the id_artist....
there is a lot more to it as well but that should get you started

How to set default value for a drop down in Mobile Application Studio

We have a requirement in which for a drop down - Transaction type (Activities), the value should be defaulted to 'Visit' and the Activity Category should be 'Sales Visit'. I tried debugging the code and got the piece of code where this value is referred, but i'm unable to find out the location where this value is picked from. Also while opening up the properties corresponding to this, there is a default value tab in the properties pane. I tried by giving this default value, but didn't work. When I'm trying to revert the changes i've made in the property, it is showing up an error.
Any pointers on this would be of great help.

You can default the process type field of BOACTIVITY by different ways-
1.In BOL, business object BOACTIVITY loaded event, check the parameter bIsNew and then default the value of process type if you want it only for new activities.
Other attributes currently get defaulted in the attributechanged event of BOACTIVITY where field is processtype.So if processtype is defaulted it will try to default other attributes based on that.It will pick values from the customizing maintained in SPRO->CRM->Transactions->Basic Settings->Define Transaction Type->Customizing Header.
2.You can also do defaulting in the UI.If you want to default one field based on a value selected for drop down, then write the code in the onselected2 event of the drop down.
In your specific case, best way is to use option 1.

I have two drop downs. Both are coming from look up fields from two lists. i want to set a default value(first list item) for the first drop down list box and then apply cascading based on the default value for the next drop down list box. where in i can set a default value but i can't apply cascading based on that default value. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I followed the instructions to the link you sent me and it did not produce the results I had hope for.
The directions are pretty straight forward and I attempted the steps several times with the same results.
Basically the field that supposed to be the detail field is blank rather than having the ID of the master field.

Filter query based on a value from a drop down menu

I am using ADFBC/JDev 10.1.3/ADF-faces (JSPX)
I would like to display a table of data based on a view object and have a drop down menu of values that the user can select from which would filter the table of data. The filter would be applied to a field in the VO. For example, have a JSPX page that shows all employees and have a drop down menu that filters the employees by a specific department with an option to show all departments too in the drop down. I'm not sure if Steve Muench's example #76 (http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2004/09/23/notYetDocumentedAdfSampleApplications.html) would serve as a basis for this requirement or not.
Can anybody give me high level guidance on how to do this? Both declaratively and programmatically would be great.

I can't get the JSPX page to display the correct data. It's displaying the entire VO and when you try to select Yes or No or All from the drop down menu, it just changes the Active Flag column in the table to whatever you select for the first row only and still displays the rest of the rows in the VO.

I'm using Firefox 5.0 and I cannot type a value into a drop down menu.

There is a webpage with a drop down menu box.
When I open the page with IE, I can choose from the listed values OR type my own value,
When I open the page with Firefox, I can only choose from the listed values BUT CANNOT type my own value.
The page is on my company and so I am sorry that I cannot show it to you guys at the moment.
Is there anything I can try modifying so that I can make the box typable?

Go to Options > Advanced > General and uncheck the "Use hardware acceleration when available"

The javascript for a drop down menu

I have a problem. I am new in pdf
javascripting. What i want to do is to make a drop down menu with multiple items, clicking any of each items will take me to a bookmark or a web addess. I can make the drop menu (this is wuite easy, however without adding java script the drop down menu will be dead. Can someone help me with this script, i will be much obliged if some one has an actual pdf file with that drop down menu and the script. How to make default value in a drop down list

I have created a drop down list using Selection-Screen code. I have three values in it. I would like to make one of the option as a default value. How to achieve it?
I am working on module pool program. I have few screens as a part of my program. I have created print button on tool bar of one screen but that print button is appearing on the other screens too. How to avoid it?

Default value in the drop down by index

Setting the Default Value for a dynamic select menu

Hi I have a php page with 2 forms on it, one feeds the other to achieve a drill down (manufacturer > model). In the second select menu I have a default static value "Select Aircraft Model", I want to set a value for the first dynamic select menu to read "Select Aircraft Manufacturer". When I add a static value to my list it tells me I alreay have a dynamic behavior on this menu and to choose a different one. I have included the code for both menus. Thank you in advance, I know this must be a stupid question, but it's got me stumped.

Importing Value/Text into drop down menu Binding tab

I did this before and I can't for the life of me remember how I did it. I need to be able to replace the text in the Value and Text areas (as shown below) with updated text. I don't think I did it using Data binding. Seems like I was able to use either an .xml or .csv file and copy and paste it and I got the result I needed.
I am splitting the Value among multiple fields. I know this was not entered manually as there are about 5000 entries. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If the Clip board has copied one column(ex: excel sheet) it will copy all the rows as values "Text" of the drop down ONLY.
If the Clip board has copied 2 columns the first column goes in to "Text" and the second column goes into"Value". By default the it will be checked the "Specify item values" check box too.
All you need here is:
1.format text and values in to 2 separate columns to populate the dropdown. (can use excel features to generate the spreadsheet. This step output should be in 2 columns only to go in to text and values of DD).
2. place a dropdown field (no properties changes required on any TAB(ex: binding))
3. copy the 2 columns from the spreadsheet and paste it using the "paste from clipboard" under "Field" tab
4. now check the binding tab, should be there both values and text for all the entries provided by spread sheet.

Completely database, um based dependant drop down menu's.

Ok my mind feels like swiss cheese right now trying to think of a way to do this without it being hard coded (meaning a change to the Database would also require a code change).
I currently have a form with various dropdowns populated via a database. Now (im sure most all of it will have to be recoded due to this) it is required the items be dependant of the primary selection. I.E. main selection is made, the other 4 drop downs get populated with the correct data. I am racking my brain with only using items fromt he database.
I suppose I will present what i was think of doing to get opinions.
Create a result set with rows of all 5 drop downs data. Make an array of just the primary item to use to populate the primary selection box. Now where I am confused is, wouldn't I have to keep the other data in the from of the result set, so when changing a selection of the primary attribute, it would compare said attribute in the resultset.

This is what I am not sure about (never have really done javascript before) can this type of logic be done dynamically, i.e. run a while loop such as this and populate the fields, then reset the index on the result set upon the selection of a new primary item.
If im an idiot and way off please tell me, if you have a better way, also please tell me. I just am trying to keep the need for code changes upon database changes to an absolute bare minimum.

you can put all of your lists in session. Then when rendering the page loop through the collections of objects and assign them to a javascript array variable. Then in your javascript method you would use the array to populate your drop downs.
so inside of your javascript tags you would use either scriplets or my preference c:forEach..
