Defining Environment Variables

Hi, I've been trying to define environment variables on Mac.
1) I tried creating the following directory ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and adding the environment variables but it didn't work. I got input/output error when I tried creating .MacOSX!
2)I tried to set them using export varname=value, didn't work.
Can someone help me please.

Who needs the environment variables? If it is a Terminal session, then creating $HOME/.bash_profile is the way to go.
If it is an application that you launch from within your login session, then the ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist will do that (after you logout and login again).
I like to use RCEnvironment for maintaining the ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist file.

If you need this for some daemon that starts at boot time, or is run via launchd, or maybe cron, then the above does not apply.

  • Best practices for defining Environment Variables/User Accounts in Linux

    Hello,
    After reading throught the Quick Install guide for 10gR2 on x86_64 Linux, I see that it is not recommended to define ANY variables in .bash_profile.
    I'm hoping to get a Best practices approach for defining environment variables - right now we use the oracle linux account for administration including sql*plus. So, where should the myriad variables be defined? Is it important enough to create a user account in linux to support best practices?
    What variables, exactly, should be defined? It seems that LD_LIBRARY_PATH is no longer being used?
    Thanks in advance
    Doug

    Something that I've done for years on unix/linux boxes is to create a seperate environment variable setup file for each instance on the box. This would include things like ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, etc. Then I would create an alias in my .bash_profile that would execute this script. As an example, I would create a orcl.env file that would hold all of the environment variables for this instance. Then in my .bash_profile I would create a line like the following:
    alias orcl=". $HOME/orcl.env"
    Then from anywhere you could type orcl and you would set your environment to connect to that database.
    Also, if you are using 10g, something else that is really nice if you are using sqlplus, and you connect to different databases without starting a new sqlplus session is to set a parameter in your $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/glogin.sql file:
    set sqlprompt "_user 'at' _connect_identifier >"
    This will automatically change your command prompt to look like this:
    RALPH at ORCL >
    if you connect as GEORGE, your prompt will immediately change to :
    GEORGE at ORCL >
    This way you can always know who and where you are connected to.
    Good luck!

  • Environment variables from ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist not read?

    Hello,
    I repost this from "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard > Account and Login" since it was advised to me overthere. Sorry if your already read this one before.
    I have a problem defining environment variables that should be visible to all my user processes, not only Terminal. According to the Apple documentation, I need to create a file ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and define my variables in there.
    Below you can see the exact paths and file name, together with the contents of the plist file:
    <pre>
    /Users/ringods/.MacOSX
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ ls -l
    total 8
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 ringods staff 313 Sep 29 15:35 environment.plist
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ cat environment.plist
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>ANT_HOME</key>
    <string>/opt/local/share/java/apache-ant</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    </pre>
    I then tried a logout/login sequence, but no ANT_HOME environment variable was defined. Even after completely rebooting, the environment variable was still not defined. I checked in a Terminal window using any of the following 3 commands:
    <pre>
    env
    export
    set
    </pre>
    This is on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.5. Am I missing something here? Does anyone know how to resolve this?

    I'm currently experiencing the same issue.
    I find however, if I take out the underscore from the name it works. At least the times I've tried.
    There is a post about using launchd.conf for configuring environment variables, but I couldn't get that to work either.

  • Environment variables in a OS User-Defined Metric Page

    I'm creating an OS-based User-Defined Metric in a Grid Control through a perl script
    How can I pass my own environment variables in the script setting the User-Interface Element- Environment, where for example i can specify var1=%perlBin% var2=%scriptsDir% etc ?
    The description in the User-Defined Metric Page says:
    Environment
    See Available Properties box for values you can assign to environment variables. Enter as space-separated list: var1=prop1 var2=prop2
    -r
    Josh

    That's exactly correct, you can specify them in the Environment field as defined here:
    Table 15-3 Create User-Defined Metric Page: Definition
    User-Interface Element      Description
    Metric Name
    Metric name identifying the user-defined metric in the Enterprise Manager user interface. This name must be unique for all User-Defined Metrics created on that host.
    Metric Type
    Type of the value returned by the user-defined script. Choose "NUMBER" if your script returns a number. Choose "STRING" if your script returns an alphanumeric text string.
    Command Line
    Enter the complete command line entry required to execute the user-defined script. You must enter the full command path as well as full path to the script location. For example, to run a Perl script, you might enter something like the following in the Command Line entry field:
    /u1/bin/perl /u1/scripts/myScript.pl
    The content of the Command Line is passed as a literal string, so you may use any syntax, special characters, or parameters allowed by your operating system.
    Environment
    Optional. Enter any environmental variable(s) required to run the user-defined script. A list of predefined properties that can be passed to your script as variables is listed in the Available Properties box. You may also specify your own environment variables. Multiple variables can be defined as a space-separated list.
    Example: If your script uses three variables (var1, var2, var3) where var1 is the location of the Perl directory (predefined), var2 is the directory where your Perl scripts are stored (predefined), and var3 is an Oracle home, your entry in the Environment text entry field would appear as follows:
    var1=%perlBin% var2=%scriptsDir% var3=/u1/orahome10
    For example, simply set var1=/this/is/the/directory/i/want/to/have/set/in/var1
    then var1 will be /this/is/the/directory/i/want/to/have/set/in/var1

  • X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro

    Hi
    I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
    GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
    After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
    Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
    Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
    Macbook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
    The reasons are these:
    1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
    2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
    You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
    I've put more discussion of these things here

        <key>NUKE_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/Nuke</string>
        <key>OFX_PLUGIN_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/OFX</string>
      </dict>
    </plist>
    Which worked just fine.  It was then changed to:
    <plist version="1.0">
      <dict>
        <key>NUKE_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/Nuke</string>
        <key>OFX_PLUGIN_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/OFX</string>
        <key>PATH</key>
        <string>/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/libexec:/Applications/Deadline/Resou rces/bin</string>
      </dict>
    </plist>
    and now, the only variable that shows up is PATH.  I edited the file back to the original, without the PATH variable, restarted my machine, and yet my Variables did not change...  Is there somewhere else that I should be looking?  Some other file?   this is what I get from terminal:
    $ echo $NUKE_PATH
    $ echo $OFX_PLUGIN_PATH
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/Applications/Deadline /Resources/bin
    And this even after deleting my environment.plist file.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

    I hope you made a typo in your post and meant ~/.MacOSX.  You typed ~/MacOSX, i.e., without the leading dot.
    At any rate $PATH is a predefined shell variable so I suspect you cannot define that one with this environment.plist mechanism.  The "proper" way to set up such things is with a  ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, ~/.profile, or IMO, best of all. ~/.bashrc.  These are scripts the shell looks for during launch (somewhat depending on whether it's a login shell or not -- see the bash reference manual).
    If bash is executed interactively it will also first look for /etc/profile.  And it will cause a $PATH variable to be created.  So that is probably the definition you are seeing all the time until you create an appropriate startup script of your own (e.g., ~/.bashrc) to override or modifiy the existing $PATH variable.
    Note, I may have paraphrased a lttile too much so see section 6.2 Bash Startup Files in the bash reference documentation for the complete proper description of the order these files are used.  If you have the developer tools installed look for bashref.html.  Otherwise it's online here.
    Finally, if you look at /etc/profile you will see it attempting to execute /usr/libexec/path_helper -s.  Try that in terminal and see if that isn't the $PATH definition you are currently seeing.

  • Setting Environment variable in windows xp

    Hi all,
    I am trying to run a java program in textpad, which is installed in windows XP, but i am getting the following error.
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
    Exception in thread "main"
    Can anybody tell me, how to set the environment variable in the control panel.
    Thanx,
    Guddu

    java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
    Exception in thread "main"This error is NOT caused by an environmental variable mis-configuration. It means you did not define a main method correctly, or you are trying to run a class as an application and it is not an application.public static void main(String[] args)

  • Using environment variable in local site folder filespec

    Configuration: Dreamweaver CC 2014.1; Windows 7
    I have quite a few sites defined in Dreamweaver and would like to define the folder locations using environment variables so thst if I decide to reorganize my disk (again) I can just redefine the variable instead of having to modify each of the site definitions. For example, instead of W:\dw\site\, I would like to specify %dw_root%\dw\site\ (where dw_root is defined as "W:"
    Attempting to save a configuration with this filespec fails with the error: The local site folder path must be absolute.
    I copied the path from the DW configuration dialog box and pasted it into a DOS window as the filespec of a DIR command to confirm the syntax was valid.
    Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work?
    Thanks.

    Very unlikely.  DW won't tolerate special characters (%&*~).

  • EJB 3.0 Environment Variables

    I am trying to create environment variables within my project, but it doesn't seem to recognize the env-entry within the sun-ejb.jar.xml file. I am using EJB 3.0, which could be the problem... is there a replacement for env-entries? If yes... what is it and how do I use it please? 10x.
    I am using Netbeans 5.5 with Java Application Server and EJB 3.0

    env-entry is not defined within sun-ejb-jar.xml. It's part of the standard Java EE component
    environment and is fully describable without any vendor-specific metadata.
    Just add it to ejb-jar.xml within the associated EJB component. You then look it up via
    new InitialContext("java:comp/env/<env-entry-name>"), where the portion of the lookup String
    relative to "java:comp/env/" must match the value in the env-entry-name of the env-entry.

    I see that only ORACLE_HOME variable value was got, question is why, of course, variable values are already defined as user variables.
    Variables PATH_MODULO and FILELOG was defined using windows maintenance variable method, that is :
    1.- settings
    2.- system
    3.- advanced options
    4.- environment variables
    Here my oracle version
    SQL> select version from v$instance;
    VERSION
    10.2.0.1.0

    Is this an Oracle Issue or variables would be defined in another way?
    ORACLE_HOME VARIABLE was created when oracle engine was installed.
    I have got same result after computer was restart.
    I appreciate wathever clue.

    Ok, that is , I only can read environment variables values, but not variables values at user profile. It happends in unix environment too. So I tried to use another instruction sequence in order to read user variables values.
