Delays in Automation! WHY?

So sometimes when i start getting heavy into automation-it doesn't work right: It does not activate or de-activate right where i draw the line or bypass it. For example i want to automate an 1/8 note delay or a reverse reverb on 1 word in the vocals- so when i take bypass off at that word, sometimes it won't start the delay right away or the reverb will kick in at the wrong time!
Sometimes i have to just settle with very basic automation, and draw the line well before the audio. very annoying especially when automating down to the milisecond. does anyone know how to fix this. is there a setting i'm missing? Thanks

In preferences/audio/devices the process buffer range setting
In preferences/audio/general the sample accurate automation setting
also the MIDI chase events settings (project settings/MIDI/chase) could be involved...
Playback of automation is known to have problems. However, when bouncing everything turns out as it should. Try to bounce just the four bars around the example you just described, and see if the bounce is correctly automated - with sample accurate automation set to the third option.

Automator: Why can't I add "Take a Picture" to workflow?

I'm pretty sure the digital cameras I have are supported for this action, but I can't even get to that point because when I drag the "Take a Picture" action to the workflow, it won't "stick". Other actions such as "Take a Video Snapshot" add normally, but the "Take a Picture" action just snaps back to the library when I try to drag and drop.
I'm automator novice, so I am hoping there is a simple answer to this question. Perhaps it can only be added to follow certain other actions? Or I have to somehow explicitly add the camera device earlier in the workflow? Any ideas?

bizarre update:
I'm starting to think this is a bug.
I tried the record button in Automator to try to take a picture in Image Capture and see if I could capture the action that way. In order to do this I was prompted to turn on "Enable access for assistive devices" in the Universal Access system setting. I didn't get as far as testing the image capture (no camera was plugged in) -- instead I was playing around and recorded the launching of Photo Booth and snapping of a picture with the iSight. Suddenly all my Automator windows were disappeared, even though they were still listed under "Window" menu in Automator, and on closing Automator I was asked to save changes to them.
What does this all have to do with the Take a Picture action? Well, all of a sudden on reopening Automator it started working and I could add it to any workflow. Still no camera connected at that time, so the dropdown list was empty. I quickly created a workflow with a single Take a Picture action and saved it. On a subsequent opening of this workflow, the action was disappeared, the workflow was blank, and I could no longer add the Take a Picture action to anything.
I have since repeated this sequence, and it seems like the recording of the Photo Booth opening and snapshot does something unholy to Automator and then suddenly the Take a Picture action can be used.
Obviously I'm going to try to reproduce this more definitively and also try to take a picture with a workflow. But this kind blew my mind so I had to share. I will update again if I learn anything else.

Delay on automation

Hello, whenever I try to enable a plugin on a certain spot, by using the "bypass" button in the "touch mode", I only hear (and see) it happening a few bars later. However, when I turn up up the volume or ping-pong with the pan of a certain track it happens where I actually did it.
Does anyone know what I do wrong? I didn't find it in the preferences.

I don't know if it's what you mean, but if you bypass a plugin with that requires a lot of latency there will be problems. Something like Logic's EQ can usually be bypassed between words without a problem but not heavier stuff. Instead of bypassing the plugin, try automating the parameters in the plugin so it has no effect but still passes through it. That way there will be no timing issues.

Drawing Automation: Why is it moving to the left of where I draw???

OOOOK. I've run into a problem in 8 that I also had with LP7. It's pretty simple to explain (I think). When I draw in automation using the Marquee tool and then drag the automation up or down, Logic slides the automation information over to the left. For example, when I am editing Volume Automation, I drag the marquee over all of bar 5 and pull that automation down a few dB, but Logic then moves the automation to bar 4 beat three to bar 5 beat three. It works like that everywhere in my session. Another example: I highlight pan automation using the marquee tool from bar 6 beat 1 to bar 6 beat 3 and pull it up (which would mean left with panning) and Logic will move that automation info to bar 5 beat 4 to bar 6 beat 2.
If that doesn't make sense I'd be happy to try and clarify further.
What's going on here? Anybody know? Is this particular session just corrupt? Anyone who can shed some light on this would be much appreciated! The marquee tool is a really great and convenient tool but when it's not working the way it's supposed to it's very frustrating.

Great idea, but no...it didn't correct the problem. I did try it though.
Here's a weird observation: The only time I've had corrupt Logic files in the past month is when I assign a different icon than the default to any of the tracks. And I'm not using my own icons...I'm using the icons that come with Logic and show up in the menu. I don't have time to test this some more at the moment but might do it some more soon to see if that's in fact what's causing things to go crazy.
Any other experiences similar to my own?

Remote connection established - delayed ping responses - why??

When we have established a remote session with Cisco RAS it takes a long time - 30 secs to a minute - until we start to receive ping responses from a server on the network. Any ideas?

There is nothing wrong with the configuration because connection is established. With Ping command the normal response occurs in 1 to 10 seconds, depending on network traffic. But in you case it is taking more than 30m sec. this may occur due to big length cable use or traffic. To determine if ping is getting delay looked at the CPU.

Consumer -call ->HTTP layer( SOAP)->WS layer-->Application->DB
Our WS data is in WS layer mostly in form of XML,
To call any XML code we need a SOAP protocol and we need HTTP for this.

5-7 sec delay changing channels from HD to Non Hd.

I have a 26in LCD Samsung Hd TV model LNS2651dx got it in 2007. The first comcast set top box I got it was connected dvi and I had no problem with this issue.
But the box went bad so comcast brought out a DCH 3416 set top box and it was connected HDMI and this was the first time I noticed this 5 to 7 second delay changing channels.
It only happens when I go from hd1080i to non hd 480p or vice versa. So I thought it was the set top box so I had comcast replace it. So they brought out a new one a DCH 3200 and the same problem is still occurring.
Now is it my TV or is it this brand Motorola comcast settop box DCH series? or even the hdmi cord 3.1 which is new?
If I put the 4:3 override on stretch it doesn't do it because it thinks every channel is in 1080i, but I'm not sure if this is safe for my TV, because some have said people look wider then they should be. I noticed on a hd channel a skinny person, but when I turned to the non hd version he was wider.
So back to my original ? What is the problem with the delay is it taking time to figure out the sound and picture, that's why there is a delay. But why don't I have this problem with dvi? If anyone can help that would be great.

Large delay in FFMPEG stream

I'm attempting to setup a system where my co-hosts of our show can send me their video feeds, without having to use Skype. I've worked out a system using ffmpeg, nginx, and vlc that works, but has several seconds of delay, which if it can be reduced, would be very helpful.
ffmpeg pulls the video from the webcam, (and I have tested this with merely copying the h264 stream from the webcam, and sending that raw to the server), ffmpeg then sends an rtmp stream to nginx, and finally, vlc connects and displays the stream from nginx.
I'm not sure which component here is introducing delay, or even why.

The combination of both of these reduced latency to a much more managable ~500ms.

Delay in call processing by lync2013 server

We have deployed CU3 Lync Setup, We are able to absorb few seconds delay in call Processing between Lync clients and Polycom Phones.
During Call transfer or call park , we are able to absorb the delay of 1.5 to 3 seconds.
Lync clients are in same domain.
Because of this few sec delay, our automation scripts are failing. Please suggest how to minimize the delay.

First I tried with Polycom VVX series- Where call transfer, Call Answer, or Call Park is taking 1 to 3 sec delay
Then I tried with lync 2013 client in the same set up, delay has been between 1 to 2.5 sec.
Delay in lync is somewhat less compare to VVX series, but its not a big difference.
Whether this delay is behaviour of Lync server and What will be the response time in the real time deployment?

Headphone jack delay

When I plug any headphones to my mid-2011 MBA, it takes 2-5 seconds for the sound to start playing from the headphones.
During these 2-5 seconds the music still plays from the external speakers. When unplugging headphones the music starts playing from the speakers almost immediately, with maybe a 1-2second delay sometimes.
Why is this? Can this be fixed with a SW-update? Is this common? Should I have my laptop replaced?
Is this a Lion-related issue?

I bought a refurbished mid 2011 13" Macbook Air with the same 3 second delay. I've had it for 48 hours now.

Mac OS 9 auto login with multiple users

Is there a way to have a mac running Mac OS 9 set up with multiple users autologin to one of the accounts?
Ok, since I know people will ask why do you want to do that. I have an old mac and found my old XTension home automation software. I want to make this machine a dedicated home lighting controller. (I have a new mac mini doing this in my house, but I wanted to play with the old machine for fun). Now, I have multiple users set up and one account for home automation that has the panel version of the finder and the only application visible is XTension. This all works great.
If the power goes out, I want the machine to reboot into this home automation account automatically. I also want to have the machine power cycle once a week just to keep from any memory problems etc.

If you are using this for just Home Automation, why not turn off the "Multiple Users" add-ons and have it revert to a single-user system. Look at the "Multiple Users" Control Panel.

Yet Another Expressing anger and dissatisfaction over the Cyan situation. How can you ignore so many and not answer a single question about this?

When I bought my Icon it was advertised as being "8.1 ready." Soon, I was led to believe, I would have Cortana. I was told that there were improvements to the camera that were in the Cyan firmware. As this phone had high spec hardware and was being called the Windows "flagship phone" on Verizon, I had no reason to doubt the update would arrive.
Not only did it not, as we are all aware, but as months went by and people took to this forum, other Windows forums and Twitter to complain and question, Verizon has never put out a simple clear statement to their customers about what their intentions are and when they might take action. I feel deceived and ignored.
To not address this in any way when so many are so vocally asking is rude. Quite simply rude.
Even today the Icon is available online at the Microsoft store and the copy there says that this phone is "Windows Phone 8.1 ready" with an asterisk that leads to the disclaimer that "update availability and timing varies by carrier." It has been four months since this update began rolling out.
What has led me to post this and lend my voice to the chorus is the articles published in the last day or two saying that Verizon has now changed the status of the update to "under development." Once again, without a single word of explanation or apology. Without a single message to all of their customers who have been asking for information for months. Again, just rude.
These articles suggest the reason for the delay is Verizon's dissatisfaction with how their apps are working with 8.1. Of course there is no way for me to know if this is true since Verizon will not say anything at all about it. So I might as well believe what the reports say I guess. This of course makes the whole thing so much worse.
Verizon, are you seriously holding up this thing that all of your customers want so as to make sure the horrible bloatware that no one wants will "work"?! You can't put out the update and then fix your terrible apps yourself like every other app maker? Only so that we can then uninstall them anyway? This is ridiculous and insulting.
Verizon is always trying to disable phone features to customer's detriment and their profit. I don't doubt that is what this delay is about. Now it is difficult to tether my phone without paying an extra fee even though the feature is built into Windows Phone. Just a way to keep me from using the data that I payed for and that is allotted to me. In the old days you couldn't move pictures off of your phone through the usb cable you had. You had to send them over the network and use data.
Why not try providing services instead of taking them away and delaying them? Why not treat customers well instead of ignoring their questions? Why not do what is right and allow Microsoft to update their hardware, hardware that we bought after being told that it was 8.1 ready?

Both these are third party software that can connect to multiple services.
As iVmichael says there are other crossplatform solutions as well.

Disk failure of my HDD?

So why does it matter?
Trying to access it via Dolphin ends up Dolphin being frozen. Trying to access it via Thunar says it's loading but it doesn't complete. Manual mount and fdisk -l simply stall. Finally, boot is spammed with those errors and it keeps checking for this drive and because of that, boot has increased to 10 minutes. But IMPORTANTLY, if I let the PC rest for a few minutes, the disk returns to normal for 5 minutes.
This is a NTFS device, so I checked it using chkdsk on Windows and VERY slowily (used to be 5 minutes, now I have to leave it for an hour), it completes and it says there are no errors.
The good news is that it's a backup device, so it doesn't contain any data that are important because they are all on my other sda1 disk, used also for the OS. However, I still would like this one fixed, because it suddenly just did that...
I also did change the cable connection, and that DID work for a while. The first time this happened, I replugged the SATA drive and it worked for a day. Second time it happened, I did the same and it worked for another day. But today, I did that, and it DIDN'T work. I even tried swapping cables from the main sda1 to this, nope, doesn't work.
If you are wondering why on earth am I running a SATA drive in IDE mode, it's because the BIOS only supports IDE mode and yet, detects SATA drives -_-.
Any thoughts?

The drive seems to be dying alright, I would do as MoonSwan recomends, get another drive that is larger than that one and do a full disk backup. Do use any reasonable means to keep the dying drive cool as it will probably give you a better chance of recovering all data.
Don't run any more tests on the drive as it will add more working hours to a drive that is already not too well, one extra pass of a test can be the difference between getting all data and having some data lost.

The tests were probably issued manually and since short offline tests last for only a couple of minutes it is possible to have more than one test in the same hour.
As for getting "Aborted by host" status, I believe that it is not uncommon, at least for extended offline tests, but if I remember correctly I've never seen that for short offline tests. The reason why it happens is that you issue the test and then leave the drive alone, since there is no activity from the outside to the drive it may go to sleep, or something may put the drive to sleep, such as an usb/sata/ide controller bridge, in that case the test will be aborted and the status will be "Aborted by host".
I have seen this behavior with some of my external hard drives and I needed to put a script doing something on the drive every couple of minutes to keep it from going into standby so the extended offline test could be completed.

Macbook Pro and KVM (Lindy KVM Switch Lite DVI 2 Port)

I have purchased the above to allow me to share my apple cinema screen, speakers, keyboard and mouse with my G5 Tower and MacBook Pro.
I have it all plugged in etc, but when I switch computers, the Macbook doesn't work properly, both screens flash blue on and off every 20 seconds or so. As if it is not detecting the screen properly.
Then when i switch back to the tower, there is a 10-20 second delay before the keyboard and mouse kicks in (the keyboard is plugged into the cinema screen and the mouse into the keyboard, as it should be)
I did find that if i plugged the keyboard straight into the KVM then I get no keyboard delay. But why when USb is going through the cinema display do i get such a long delay?
When the tower is selected the macbook still thinks there is a second screen attached (can see both in my display prefs) and goes into dual screen mode (which is the way i want to use it when all plugged in) but it is when i switch the Macbook, it all start to go wrong.
Any ideas? Have tired resetting everything (PRAm, plist, ejecting the screen (ctrl + shift + eject)), several times. Checked cables etc
I thought it could be hardware issue, perhaps the Macbook Pro doesn't give a big enough signal out of the KVM (as it has to travel two cable lengths)
The display works fine when plugged directly into the MBP.
I tried it in bootcamp (xp) and annoyingly the KVM works fine, and I get dual screen mode, share keyboard and audio as it should. It is only in Leopard 10.5.6 that i get the problems.
So it is not hardware as technically it has to power to do as it should (as windows proved), it seems more like a Apple software problem as it looks like it is constantly checking for displays and resetting itself.
Anyway to force it not to do this?

I've just noticed a similar issue. I have an ATEN CS62DU switch between a PC with vista and a macbook pro 2.33ghz. 15.4inch (early 2007). Switching worked fine as far as I can remember, but after upgrading my mac to 10.5.6 it crashes as soon as I switch. Very very iritating.
Anyone else experienced kvm malfunction after the 10.5.X -> 10.5.6 upgrade?
