Delete Track from iTunes Library if in User Playlist

Hello
I want to delete [music] tracks from the main iTunes [10.7] library if they are in a user playlist.
I saw (on dougscripts.com) an approach where the database id was obtained from the track in the playlist and this was then used to delete from the main library.  However, it does not seem to work:
delete (some track of thePlaylist whose database ID is (get database ID of deleteTrack))
returns error -1708 "... doesn't understand the delete message"
I think this is to do with a change to the way in which the main library is referenced, but if anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I found out what is happening: the tracks are shared from iCloud - via iTunes Match - which renders them un-deletable by AppleScript!

Currently, iMatch is turned off on my computer, as I do not want to upload any more songs. If I turn it on, will it upload all songs that are currently in my library? Is there another way that deleting them one by one?
You must enable iTunes Match on the new computer. The best way to accomplish what you want to do is to create a new, empty library by launching iTunes while holding down the Option key (Shift on Windows) and choosing "new library." Do not let iTunes scan for new content, but do enable iTunes Match on the empty library. Once the scan is finished you may delete tracks from the cloud. When you are done switch back to the main iTunes library.

Instead of removing the music from the cloud or the iTunes library why not shuffle your music using a Smart Playlist which excludes the holiday music, or tracks that are not checked. For example, use this very simple Smart Playlist:

  • Problems deleting tracks from itunes

I have a Mac, Iphone and Ipad. I have problems deleting tracks from iTunes. The issue I have is that tracks keep coming back. The issue goes something like this:
I delete a track from iTunes. I sync with an IOS device. On sync, iTunes says there are purchased items on the IOS device not present in your library, do you want to import them? I select no, then iTunes imports the tracks anyway! Essentially the track I deleted from iTunes, gets imported back in from an IOS device, every time.
This means I face the situation of having to delete tracks from all 3 devices, to stop them coming back. Am I doing something wrong?

There is a way to do this, kindof. See my post here.
The best way to do this if you want to be able to continue updating the Apple TV with new content would be to buy an external hard disk and keep all your movies (and the secondary library itself) on that disk. Then, when you want to add movies to the Apple TV, you would just connect the external disk, open the secondary library in iTunes, and add the movie into iTunes. The setting here that you need to be aware of is the "Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" setting in iTunes Preferences > Advanced General. So long as this setting is on, any movie file that you add to the secondary library will automatically be copied by iTunes to your external drive. Once you're done syncing the Apple TV, and you verify that the movie file did in fact get copied to the external disk, you can delete the copy from the hard drive in your computer.

  • Deleting Songs From iTunes Library...and Keeping Them On Your iPod

Will this process allow me to delete songs from my iTunes library, but keep them on my iPod?
    1. When iPod is plugged in, check "Only Sync Checked Items" in iTunes
    2. Delete items from iTunes library.
    3. Add new items to iTunes library.
    4. Sync iPod.
It should keep the songs I deleted from iTunes on my iPod, right?
If you need me to be any clearer, please ask.
EDIT: If this will not work, is there another way to do this? The songs I have are taking up a lot of room on my computer.

Any auto sync method you use will delete the songs from the iPod if you delete them from iTunes.
You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the songs manually.
However, this is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.

  • Problems downloading music tracks from iTunes library to iPod Nano 2nd gen.

    Hi
I am a new iPod user and have purchased tracks from iTunes and downloaded them to my iPod successfully. I also copied some tracks from a CD to the iTunes software and the next time I synched the iPod it copied all but three tracks onto the iPod on the CD OK. Although the three problem tracks display the title etc information on the iPod they won't play at all on the iPod even though they work fine on my PC using the iTunes library. The CD is a (relatively) new one - Hank Plays Cliff. Why do some tracks load to the iPod but not others?
Thanks for any advice for a silver surfer!
    John

I recently had this problem with a Bowling for Soup CD purchased from iTunes Store. iTunes support referred me to this document for assistance http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n300766. When this did not work, they reposted the songs to my account so that I could download them again. When that still did not work, they determined there was a problem with the songs themselves and refunded my purchase price.

  • Deleting apps from iTunes Library and IOS Devices at once.

    Hi there,
I tend to delete all unneeded apps from iTunes library on my Mac, because when I delete them from there, it just take one syncing session to deleted them from all my other devices. But recently I noticed that this way is no longer helpful, now I have to delete each app on my iPhone, iPad and Mac manually. So if anyone can help me to make iTunes recur to the previous pehevior, please replay ASAP.
    Thanks.

I have the same problem! I recently decided to clean up my devices. The first thing that came to my mind was to delete an App from iTunes, sync and get rid of it on all other devices. I was surprised that it stays on iDevices evem after you delete it from iTunes. I don't want it this way. DOes anyone know of a trick that can allow me delete an app just once?
Before if you delete an App from iTunes and try to Sync an iPhone or an iPad with it, you would see a window telling you that there are items on your iphone that are not present in iTunes - do you want to copy them? Now it just "syncs" and leaves the Apps untouched. What kind of synchronization is this?

  • Delete file from iTunes Library and Computer

I convert a lot of my own TV shows for playback on iPad/iPod touch. Once I have watched the show I delete it from my library.
It used to be that when I deleted from my library, I would get a message asking if I wanted to delete from library only or from library AND computer. It does not ask me this anymore.
I went into preferences and clicked on "reset all warnings" but that didn't fix the problem. Any tips on how to restore this functionality?

What I mean is I don't want an extra copy of the file made when I add something to my library. I already have the file where I want it.
I did try your suggestion, and just as I suspected, it made an extra copy in a different location on my computer, then when I deleted it, yes, it asked me if I wanted to move it to the recycle bin, but it only deleted the copy, not the original.
I'm marking your response as helpful, as I can use it as a workaround if I can't find a better solution, but I have never done it this way before. I've always had full control over which folders my shows were in, and only one copy. And when I've deleted, it has deleted the original file, not just a copy of it.

  • Can't delete some tracks from iTunes Library

I am having trouble deleting a few files from my iTunes Library. It won't let me even change any information on the track within iTunes. Not a locked file or anything. Please help!

Try swiping across the song - in the songs tab of the Music App - from right to left - to bring up the red delete button.
Note - this is done in the. Music app. Not iTunes.

  • Delete songs from itunes library

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to delete songs from the itunes library?
The DELETE option is greyed out on the edit tab.
    Many thanks,
    Pete

Do you want to delete from iTunes or delete from the iPod? To delete from iTunes, click on the song in your library that you want to remove and press the delete key on your keyboard. To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key.
How you delete content from your iPod depends how you have it set to update:
If you are updating automatically (syncing) all songs and playlists then delete the files from the iTunes library. In the iTunes Library highlight the file and press the delete key on your keyboard. If you're updating the iPod from a selected playlist delete the song from the playlist and it will remain in the library. Next time you connect they will deleted automatically from your iPod.
If you are updating manually, connect your iPod and when it shows in the iTunes 7 source list click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the usual song list. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly as above by pressing the delete key on your keyboard.
To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, follow the instructions above for deleting from iTunes only delete from the iPod song list instead..
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod song list as displayed in iTunes then press the delete key on your keyboard: Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod

  • Delete songs from iTunes library from "recently added" playlist

can you please add a function that removes songs from both the entire library and the recently added playlist by simply right clicking a song while in the "Recently Added" playlist that has the "Delete" function. this is very simple and would make iTunes that much more user friendly.
    thanks!
i have no idea where else to submit suggestions like this, apple people aren't user-friendly enough.

can you please add a function that removes songs from both the entire library and the recently added playlist by simply right clicking a song while in the "Recently Added" playlist that has the "Delete" function
We are only other users, such as yourself.
You can send suggestions to Apple here -> http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Press *Shift Delete* to delete songs from a playlist and also from the library.
    (from your signature block)
    pc, duh
Not really "duh". I have a pc and it is a Macintosh.
The idea is to put correct info in your signature to help with problems you may be having As an example, if you had problems with your iTunes library disappearing and your signature showed "Sony Vaio", immediately we would know the Sony media software is the problem.
    why do you care
So we don't have to ask when you post a question.

  • Please help! Deleting songs from itunes library & updating ipod

Must I keep all albums I wish to upload into my ipod on my computer? I have the ipod settings set to automatic and if I delete the album from the library (completely from my pc) the next time I connect my ipod the album gets deleted from the ipod.
I tried setting the ipod to manual but then I can't figure out how to update my ipod with the songs I want to add. It really doesn't make sense for me to have to fill up my hard drive with all of this music just to keep the songs on my ipod. I really hope someone can please tell me otherwise.

If it's on Manual update, you simply drag the songs from the library to the iPod in iTunes.
If you wan tot remove music, right click on it and select Clear. Do this with the iPod selected not a playlist on the iPod.

  • Deleting podcasts from iTunes library AND iPod?!? HELP.

I have 61 podcasts on my iPod and in my iTunes library.
I didn't want them anymore, so I unsubscribed and deleted the podcasts from iTunes.
I synced to my iPod, assuming that the files would be automatically removed.
    But they weren't.
I've tried checking and unchecking "Sync only checked songs and videos" on the iPod device page.
I've tried checking "Sync all episodes of:.." and then not checking any podcasts.
It's not worked so far. My iTunes is up to date and everything..my iPod charged..
Im wondering HOW do you delete podcasts - or any other music, videos...etc - from your iPod and iTunes?
Please help! Reply soon, I'm in desperate need.
    Thanks.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
It appears that the mess resulted in the iPod seeing the computer/iTunes library as a new computer/iTunes library. If you sync to a new computer your iPod gets erased and the media in the iTunes library ends up on the iPod.

  • Delete songs from iTunes Library/Hard Drive directly from iTunes

I have my library setup so that all the music is added to the music folder and then I add to the library manually in iTunes.  I would like to go through and delete some songs from my library but I would also like them to be deleted from hard drive.  Typically I will left click the song, click show in finder, cmd-delete in finder, and then cmd-delete in iTunes.  Since I need to do this for 100s of songs in my library, it would be nice if I could directly delete from the hard drive and library inside iTunes.  If anyone knows of any features, scripts, or what have you that I could do this, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your help!
    OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 11

First you need to make sure that the music files you want to delete are in the itunes music folder (you can relocate this in the advanced section of iTunes preferences). If the files are in a different folder, deleting them will only remove them from the itunes library, but not delete the files from the hard drive.
Open itunes and select the songs you want to delete.
If you are looking at them in an iTunes playlist, then hold the option key and press the delete key.
If you are looking at them in the iTunes library, just press the delete key.
You should get a popup asking if you want to delete the song(s) from your iTunes library. If they are songs purchased from the iTunes Store, you might also get a question about deleting them from iCloud. Select delete song and you should then get another popup asking if you want to move the selected song(s) to the trash. Select delete song. Once you empty the trash they should no longer be in the finder or the iTunes library.
Hope this helps. I just tested it out with OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 11.0
