Deleting archives with RMAN when physical database is in place

hi all,
i want to backup and remove archvie logs using RMAN on one of my system which is having a physical standby database.how can i ensure RMAN backup and delete only archive logs which are shipped to DR site(physical standby database).when ever i fire my rman script it should delte only the archvies which are alredy shipped.i appreciate your valueble inpus in this regard.

Archived log deletion policy enhancements
When you CONFIGURE an archived log deletion policy, the configuration applies to all archiving destinations, including the flash recovery area. Both BACKUP ... DELETE INPUT and DELETE ... ARCHIVELOG obey this configuration, as does the flash recovery area. You can also CONFIGURE an archived redo log deletion policy so that logs are eligible for deletion only after being applied to or transferred to standby database destinations. You can set the policy for mandatory standby destinations only, or for any standby destinations.

    I have this setting on one database: 10.2.0.3 on linux x86
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
    When a backup occurs, i issue the following at the end:
    delete noprompt obsolete device type disk;
    Which delete an old backup and old archivelogs on the server.
    Situation: It happen rarely, but still, sometimes, I have to manualy delete archivelogs to make space.
    Here is what i do: Ensure that the archivelogs which I am about to delete are backed up.
    Then I issue the following Rman command:
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    delete noprompt expired archivelog all;
    which tells Rman that the archivelogs are not on the os anymore.
    Is there a way to delete archivelogs with rman or oracle, not manually on the os?
    note: i do not want to delete a backupset will doing so.
    This is temporary solution. More disk space is comming and new backup scenario will be in place for this database.

    Exists many ways to make this, as:
    DELETE NOPROMPT FORCE COPY OF ARCHIVELOG ALL COMPLETED BEFORE 'SYSDATE-1';
    or
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG all DELETE ALL INPUT;
    or
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG all NOT BACKED UP 2 TIMES DELETE ALL INPUT;
    ...

    We are planning to setup a data guard (Maximum performance configuration ) between two Oracle 9i databases on two different servers.
    The archive logs on the primary servers are deleted via a RMAN job bases on a policy , just wondering how I should delete the archive logs that are shipped to the standby.
    Is putting a cron job on the standby to delete archive logs that are say 2 days old the proper approach or is there a built in data guard option that would some how allow archive logs that are no longer needed or are two days old deleted automatically.

    Still it is on 9i, So you need to schedule RMAN job or Shell script file to delete archives.
    Before deleting archives
    1) you need to check is all the archives are applied or not
    2) then you can remove all the archives completed before 'sysdate-2';
    RMAN> delete archvielog all completed before 'sysdate-2';
    As per your requirement.

    2) Delete archivelogs on my STANDBY server only when these logs are sucessfully APPLIED to the database?

    My database is running in archivelog and I am using RMAN to back up the database to a SBT device (tape). The question that I have is if I do backup database plus archivelogs and this backupset is wriiten to tape can I then delete the arhivelogs from disk? On the same note when I do incremental backups can I then delete all archivelogs on disk if the backupset set is written to tape.

    I want to delete the archive log files on the phsical standby database when they were applied. The archive log files are in the flash recovery area. So i used

    Does rman delete the archive log files immediately when they are applied or when the disk space becomes scarce?

    They're marked as reclaimable when applied, so they're still on the disk but when the flah recovery area will become full they'll be deleted to give space to the new one, and so...

    I am trying to learn oracle dataguard and as part of the process learning creating standby database.
    Platform : Sun-Fire-V250 Sparc, Solaris 10
    Database Version - Oracle 11R2
    I am creating standby database on same server, so directory structure is different.
    Following the instructions on Oracle site I managed to create a functional physical standby database. But I am not able to create standby database using RMAN. These are the steps that I followed-
    1.Set up all necessary parameters on primary database as done while creating physical standby database manually, eg setting force logging, creating standby logs etc.

    Archive files of the current incarnation, since I successfully created standby database are shipped but yet to be applied - am I right?
    Then my final question is, when will these archives be applied to standby database?

  • Need help with rman basics

    Hi,
    I would like to take hot backup of our database with no catalog. I created two folders in the local disk Backup and archives. The rman backups are stored in this folder and archive are stored in archive folder.
    Suppose server A has all the RMAN copies (backup available on other machine) and it got corrupted. I want to restore it on other machine.
    I have few doubts:
    1) Do i need to create same structure for all the database files in other server like the folders Backup,Archives and oracle home.
    2) Do i have to copy all the files in Backup,Archives folders to their corresponding folders in other machine.
    Can i restore the full database from here. I tried using similar scenario,but i had missing archives.
    3) When the database is in archivelog mode and the online backup is being taken, the modifications done to the database are stored in online archive files. My question is suppose i switch the database in noarchivelog mode and start the database, do i still need recovery?

    3. If a media failure occurs while the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you can only restore the database to the point of the most recent full database backup. You cannot recover transactions subsequent to that backup. To restore a database operating in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you can use only whole database backups taken while the database is closed. Therefore, if you decide to operate a database in NOARCHIVELOG mode, take whole database backups at regular, frequent intervals.

  • Appying patches when Physical standby in place.

    Kindly suggest steps for patch application /application upgradation. We dont have any replication tool.What is the standard process to sync standby after patch upgradation . Is there any alternative of rsync/rdist utility.
    Is it possible that after applying patch in Primary, On Standby we have to apply as it is, with no Database inclusion as the standby database will be in mount state and will not available for making database changes.
    How to find which files to be copied manually to sync the standby with Primary. Will this method reliable?
    Apologies to ask many questions but i found no single document covering this detailed process.

    Reconfigure the Standby Middle Tier File Systems

    perl adcfgclone.pl atTechStack <INST_TOP>/appl/admin/<Standby CONTEXT_NAME>.xml
    To complete the configuration of environment run AutoConfig using the following commands:

    adconfig.sh contextfile=<INST_TOP>/appl/admin/<standby context>.xml run=INSTE8
    AutoConfig will report errors regarding to database connection, these errors can be ignored as the database is unavailable.
    Step 4.4.11 - Reconfigure the Standby Database File Systems
    If you had to synchronize the apps utilities on the database server in the prior step, you should also reconfigure the database server. As the ORACLE user on each database node of standby database tier, first stop the listener if it is running, then execute the following commands:
    cd <RDBMS ORACLE_HOME>/appsutil/clone/bin
    perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack <RDBMS ORACLE_HOME>/appsutil/<Standby CONTEXT_NAME>.xml

  • Delete archivelogs using RMAN

    Hi,
    I usually delete archivelogs with RMAN with command as "DELETE ARCHIVELOG ALL COMPLETED BEFORE 'SYSDATE -1' if i have to clear the archivelogs to freeup space from the FRA.
    My question is if i delete the archivelogs-does this deletes the records from the catalog also(I think so) if backed up to tape.In that case the catalog doesn't have info for these archives even if they are on tapes,correct?
    So in case of recovery how can i restore them?

    The RESYNC CATALOG that may be part of your backup script or implicitly executed by a Backup would synchronise from the control file to the catalog schema (repository).
    I don't think that you can selectively decide what to not resync.
    You can query RC_ARCHIVEDLOG (the STATUS column) in the repository and in V$ARCHIVED_LOG (which is against the controlfile)
    i) before the DELETE executed by RMAN and
    ii) again after the next BACKUP which does a RESYNC to see if changes are reflected.

  • When to delete archive logs- using rman 10.1.0.5

    I am using rman to backup my database(10.1.0.5) along with backing up the archivelogs delete input. The retention of the backup is set to 1. I am backing the datafiles and archivelogs to disk /backupdata. I noticed that the /backupdata is filling up with a lot of backup archivelogs. Since the retention of the database is set to 1, does that mean that rman will also clean the archivelogs in /backupdata too? What I am asking is, since the retention is set to 1, does rman automatically determine witch archivelogs in the /backupdata to delete if rman determines that the archivelogs is not needed to satisfied the retention 1 condition??? Thank you in advance.

    rman won't automatically purge your backups. Retention policy can be defined to be 1 (what?) redundancy copies or recovery window?
    You may have defined, let's say 1 redundant copy, which means you must have at least one backup to consider the other obsolete, and you will keep one redundant copy. The other backups are not automatically deleted, they are just marked obsolete, and you can delete them.
    I suggest you to manually purge your backups, as they will fill up your storage. issue, from a recovery manager session:
    rman> report obsolete;
    rman > delete noprompt obsolete;
    rman> report obsolete;
    The delete noprompt obsolete will physically purge all backups reported as obsolete by the first command. You can confirm actions from the last command.
    I suggest you to perform a periodic task to purge obsolete backups, schedule last command, it can be done once your regular backup ends.
    If you have Enterprise manager DB Control console enabled, it can be scheduled using the internal scheduler, and it can be monitored from within EM.

    I'm in 10g on Linux. I want to create a standby database on another Linux server. I did not find a clear procedure to create it in Oracle® Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide 10g Release 2 (10.2) Part Number B14191-02
    and niether in Oracle® Data Guard Concepts and Administration 10g Release 2 (10.2) B14239-04
    In the last one chapter 3 sends you to F appendix and F appendix says do nothing before having than all in chapter 3 :
    In F.1.1 page F-2 it is said :
    See Chapter 3 for a complete discussion of physical standby database preparation,including initialization parameter settings. You must perform all necessary preparation tasks described in these chapters before RMAN can successfully create the standby database files and mount the standby database.
    Any way I'm looking for a procedure or clear article to create it.

  • RMAN in 10g database deletes archivelog files before standby receives them

    Hi all,
    We currently have problem with our Oracle 10gR1 database on Windows 2000 server in that the RMAN backups on the primary database delete archivelogs before the standby database can receive current and new archivelogs from primary database. What happens is that RMAN backs up the archivelogs and deletes them from disk before the archivelogs are sent to the standby. The standby then looks for these archivelogs on the primary but is unable to locate them. Whenever this happens, the production database (primary) hangs and we have to restart the instance on the primary. We have our Data Guard setup in maximum performance mode so this should not happen.
    As a short term fix, we have changed the backups to have RMAN backup and delete the archive logs 15 minutes older than current time so that the standby can receive the logs and not have problems. Besides this fix is there a long term solution to the problem or is it a bug in Oracle 10g? The issue came up after we upgraded from 9i to 10g and never saw it before in 9i with RMAN and Data Guard physical standby databases.

    and this is to my understanding irespective to retention policy...unfortunately report obsolete does not report applied archived logs as eligable for deletion.
    How this works in your case?

  • Can you help me? I meet some errors when I do incomplete recovery with RMAN

    In recover step, There are following errors:

    1. Should I restore archive log files generated on July 16th back to orignal archive directory in order to avoid to recover failure?
    2. Or Should I add the command "sql 'alter system archive log current'" in the backup script in order to avoid to recover failure?

    The database is ok when I try to do incomplete recovery database that was fully backed up on July,16th,2004. The database is oracle 8.1.7 and is in the archive mode:

    I repeat my questions:
    1. Should I restore archive log files generated on July 16th back to original archive directory in order to avoid to recover failure?
    2. Or Should I add the command "sql 'alter system archive log current'" in the backup script in order to avoid to recover failure?

    You are correct. In RMAN8i, you should add the "alter system archive log current; command before you backup the archive logs.
    You are running into the case where Oracle needs additional redo to make the database consistent that was located in the current online log at the time of the backup.
    If you set UNTIL TIME to an earlier time does the recover work?
    In Oracle9i, if you issue the command, "backup database plus archive logs", RMAN will automatically archive the current online log before performing the archive log backups.
