Deleting Files in MacBookPro - Yosemite sending "FREE SPACE" to "Other"

I have the weirdest problem.
I'm running a Macbook Pro Late 2013 with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
The MAC came with a 500GB SSD Drive.
I have about 60GB of free space on my Mac. I need to restore a large file that is about 60GB.
So I thought to myself, "I'll just delete files I don't need".
I went ahead and deleted a parallels VM that was about 60GB in size. But I was shocked when I checked "About this Mac": no free space had been added!
I went ahead and did all the usual stuff. Empty trash, restart the MAC, repair permissions using "Disk Utility", restart the mac again, - but no matter what I did, I could not get the 60GB of free space from the file I had just deleted.
I downloaded OmniDisk Sweeper and Disk Doctor, but none of these applications where able to either get my 60GB back, or at least point me to where the 60GB has gone.
So I decided to disable my time machine. This usually gets rid of the backup cache. "About this Mac" showed that I would get about 50GB free space by doing this. After doing this, I was shocked to see that my free space had only changed negligibly - from 60GB to 64GB. Deleting 50GB of backups only added 4GB to my free space.
However during all of this, I noticed my "Other" data in "About this Mac" had grown considerably from about 90GB to about 206GB. It seems to me that all that space I have free'd up has somehow gone into the "Other" category instead of going to the "Free Space" category.
Please note my trash can is completely empty, and I have repaired permissions using Disk Utility at least twice with no effect.
I need to get my free space back so I can restore my virtual machine and get back to work.
Please help!!!

How much space does it say is available when you click on the HDD icon on your desktop COMMAND + I?
Hoe does this compare with OmniDiskSweeper?
You might have to reindex Spotlight  if you are seeing inconsistent amounts.
Ciao.

I have deleted pictures and files to free space on my mac book air.  It did not free space and the backups file shows that even deting files it did not help.
Please let me know how to delete the files on backups folder.
    Thank you,

    Have you emptied your trash?
    Finder Menu > Empty trash…
That will remove the items that were on the internal disk & were in the Trash.
What is the backup you are talking about? Is this a Time Machine backup?

  • HT201250 Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

    NO!
Time Machine is not an Archival Backup. It will keep files for a while, but if it needs the space, it will delete files that no longer exist on the hard drive.
Get a couple external drives and move the files to both of them.

  • Cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.

cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.  i have no 'other' things on my phone and have never had this problem before. I believe this may have come from upgrading to ios5.

Connect to iTunes, then click the Restore button. When asked, choose to set up as a new phone. After it finishes, right click on the name of the iPhone in the list on the left side of the iTunes window and choose Restore from Backup. Do this BEFORE you sync and after restoring.

  • After deleting files, I still have no disk space

I had completely clogged my Mac HD with video files, so it was no wonder I had 0kb disc space left. But after I moved them to an external drive, finder is still saying there is no disc space. I have tried the following:
    1. first moved around 11 GB of video files/iMovie and Premiere project files from the Movies folder to my external hard drive
    2. restarted and shut down the computer several times. I expected to get a message having to do with File Vault so I could free up space that way, but no such message appeared and the computer just restarted or turned itself off each time.
    3. Emptied the trash, which seems to have freed 440MB.
    4. Ran the periodic daily, weekly, monthly system routines in terminal
    5. In Disk Utility, Erased free space
    6. In Disk Utility, verified disk
    7. In Disk Utility, verified file permissions.
I don't know what else to do! I expected moving the video files to free up the disk space and Finder still says I have none. Help?

    Hello,
A Sparse image is a type of disk image file that can be created under Mac OS X using Disk Utility. Encrypted sparse image files are used to secure a user's home directory by Mac OS X's FileVault feature. So if you use File Vault, you need that file.
Also, if you know the names of the video files, do a Search in Spotlight to see if there are any on the drive that Disk X might now have found. If you aren't sure of the file names, you could try .mov
It depends on the software you used to create those video files with to start with.
The light just went on over my head. If you used the apple+delete shortcut to delete the files from their original location after moving them to the external drive, that doesn't send them to the Trash in software such as iMovie. Launch iMovie. Go to File/Empty Trash. Anytime you delete files using iMovie, you have to delete them while using that application within that application. When you delete files in iMovie, it doesn't send those files to the Trash in the Dock, but in it's own app... just a temp memory cache if you will.

  • Deleting Files dosen't give me the space I need.

Hello there, I was recently cleaning my Mac of junk files around 10-30GB worth of space then I noticed when I checked the info for my Machintosh HD the space used by my system is still the same even after I deleted them already. Also when I'm deleting a file it always ask me for a password and it never goes to the trash bin, it instantly vanishes.
I've tried using Disk Utility to "Erase Free Space" but It's still the same. Before using Disk Utility my remaining space is 28.5 GB and afterwards its still the same.
I've read that if the Disk Utility dosen't work it only means my HD is corrupted or there is something wrong with it. Any thoughts about this?
I would really appriciate all suggestions.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Not enough free space - any other tips?

    Hi,
Recently upgraded from Tiger to 10.6.1 (fresh install), and I'm having an issue trying to run a first Time Machine backup. Have searched this topic and found some information, but nothing that has fixed this problem yet.
I reformatted an older 500GB drive specifically to use as the Time Machine backup drive. The system drive of my MacBook Pro is also 500GB but has about 70GB of free space. When I try to launch a Time Machine backup, I get an error telling me:
*Time Machine could not complete the backup.*
*This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 509.77 GB but only 501.21 GB are available.*
This doesn't look right to me.. When estimating the backup size in the Time Machine pref pane, it says that the estimated size of a full backup is 429.24, which seems exactly right seeing as there's 70GB or so of free space on the system drive. Also in the same pane, all of the external firewire drives connected are already selected to be excluded from the backup, so it can't be trying to include them.
I read somewhere here that sometimes a simple restart will sort this out, but it hasn't helped here. I realize I should probably have a larger drive than 500GB to use as a Time Machine for a 500GB system drive, but it seems like it should be at least working to start off with.
Anyone have any idea what's going on and what I can do to fix it?
    Cheers

    To add to Boyd's comment...
A good rule of thumb that I've always followed when setting up people with Time Machine is you want at least double your source drive. Especially when you're the type of person that likes a lot of archives or is constantly adding and removing content. At minimum, you want the "next step up" drive. In the case of a 500GB internal, I'd recommend a 750GB at a minimum (or a 1TB).
Theoretically, you could wipe the drive and start again with a new 10.6.x backup. But I'm unsure if the archives and such from your Tiger volume are important.

  • Deleted 75GB of files though it did not free space on drive?

I deleted over 75GB of files from my Macbook Pro (my iPhoto database) and when I Get Info on the hard drive it does not show that it freed up space, this is after I emptied the trash. Any ideas why?
    Thanks.

iPhoto has it's own trash. You need to empty that. Right-click on the Trash "album" and select Empty Trash.
Or, select the Trash, and then click the Empty Trash button in the top-right of the window.

  • Should I Delete Old or Empty Catalogs to Free Space on Hard Drive?

Somehow I ended up with three catalogs in LR 4 -- Catalog.lrcat, Catalog-2.lrcat and Catalog-3.lrcat.   My original catalog in LR3 was Catalog.lrcat.  When I upgraded to LR4, Catalog-2.lrcat was created, and this is the catalog that I use.  I'm not sure how Catalog-3 was created, but all of the images are grayed out and have question marks on them.
I would like to free up some space on my hard drive by getting rid of -- deleting -- Catalog (104MB) and Catalog-3 (103MB).  Is this not recommended?  And exactly how do I go about deleting a catalog?

Here's one way to do it (year-by-year archives):
    * select the year's photos
    * choose export as catalog:
export to whereever you'd like to keep such stuff.
    Here's another way:
    * simply copy your active catalog folder to whereever you'd like to keep such stuff (exit Lightroom first).
The first way, you'll have multiple archive catalogs, one for each year. You'd never fall back to one of these, but you may import from them.
The second way, you'll also have multiple catalogs, each will be bigger by amount added since last archive... Again, you are unlikely to fall back to one of these, but you could, especially if you save xmp too, in which case you could recover most work by falling back to most recent archive catalog and read xmp metadata for all photos edited since then.
Different folks like different strokes - if you invent another scheme you prefer - do share it. For example you may want to archive just the lrcat file (e.g. as backed up by Lr), or maybe the whole cat folder (except for previews). Also, you may want to archive other user files too, e.g. as backed up by "Aux Backup" plugin. Note: if you use the first approach, you can backup photo source files in with the archived catalog (which is one reason I recommend it - a catalog with no photo files is about as much fun as a dead puppy...). If you use the second approach, you'll need a different plan for saving associated master image files (lest your archived storage grow like streganona's spaghetti pot ;-}).
    Hope this helps,
    Rob

  • Deleted Files disappeared from external drive but space is still occupied ( iMac )

    Hello all...
    I have this problem.
Whenever I delete items from my external hard drive, using iMac (running mavericks), the files disappear from the drive window but their space will be still occupied. if i format the drive using my mac, everything will disappear & the whole drive capacity would be available for use.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Luk

Unless you empty the trash while the external is attached, the files will remain in the trash. You will gain back your space after you empty it.

  • Deleting BLOB columns doesn't return free space

After building a file upload/download app in HTMLDB, I found that the space doesn't seem to get released again after deleting a row from the upload table. Is there any specific purge procedure I must run, or any call to the DBMS_LOB package in order to get the space back?
I didn't find anything useful in the documentation (any documentation, not the HTMLDB docs ;-)).
Thanks in advance and a happy new year to everyone,
    Holger

    Hello Joel,
thanks for your reply. It's a custom table with following layout:
    FILENAME VARCHAR2(4000),
    DESCRIPTION VARCHAR2(4000),
    ID NUMBER NOT NULL,
    BLOB_CONTENT BLOB,
    MIME_TYPE VARCHAR2(4000),
    UPLOAD_DATE DATE
When I check the "Detaile Tablespace Utilization Report" in HTMLDB, I don't see a decrease of used space though a record with a large file has been deleted.
I followed the howto to create an upload/download application in HTMLDB and then added a page to be able to delete records...

  • Help please - message after using the Erase Free Space function in Disk Ut

Please help. I've been using my Mac Mini for 6 months and decided I wanted to securely erase previously deleted files, and found the Erase Free Space facility in Disk Utilities. So I chose the option "7-pass Erase of deleted files", and left my Mac Mini to do its business.
At the end, I got the message that my startup disk is full, but ignored that message because I understand that's normal when free space has been deleted.
After doing a Restart, things seem to be running smoothly, but I have a Warning message which reads
Warning. The following disk images failed to mount:
    Image: EFTFile1.sparseimage Reason: corrupt image.
What does this mean, please, and what do I have to do, if anything?
I'm completely new to this, so please explain clearly.
    Thanks everyone!!

Hi again, i've resolved the problem, thanks. It was my inexperience that was helping confuse the issue.
Sorry to have taken your time. Thanks again for your input.

  • How to free space on an imac hard drive

My imac is showing that the hard drive is full however, I have tried several times to delete files, movies, and pictures to free space and its still shows zero space is available. Yesterday i freed 4.4GB and this morning when I turned it on its back to zero space available. Any ideas on what the problem could be would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Do you use the mac's mail application?  If you do open up finder, then go to the menu bar and click go, then hold down option, and a hidden folder called "library" should appear in the drop down box.  Click it.  Find a folder called mail and click once on the folder "mail" then press and hold command and click the letter "i" on the top right of this little window it will give you a size, how big is it?

  • Deleted files still taking up space

    Hi all,
I've done a search and can't find answers or figure it out. I'm manually managing my iPod through iTunes since I don't want everything to be synched. I've manually deleted various files on the iPod through iTunes, including all video files. Yet in the summary, iTunes still lists my iPod as having 3+ GB of video, even though I've verified there's no video left. I've even deleted a lot of audio files, but iTunes still keeps saying my iPod is full. It's as if my deleted files are still taking up physical space even though I've deleted them. Is there an [empty trash] icon or command I just can't find?
    Thanks!

    Thats it! You're a genius!
The KEY point here is this:
Just like in Itunes, the Music Library and Playlist are two different things.
Just because you delete a playlist, doesn't mean you deleted it from your library.
So, all of this time, I was deleting whole playlists or a few songs from the playlist by highlighting and Edit > Delete. So visually, they were gone. However, everything is still in the library. Every song I ever added since I bought the ipod was still there!!
    SIMPLE DIRECTIONS:
    1. Connect Ipod
    2. In Itunes: Device > iPod > Music - you will see the long list. Manually checking and "sync" does not officially remove it from the ipod (at least not in my case). I manually DELETED them by highlighting and Edit > Delete.
I immediately checked my ipod summary and yes, the space was free!!!!!!!!!!
