Deploying an RT app with Network Variables

There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Oops - the message got posted before I even wrote it - sorry!
I'm working on a simple RT daq app that acquires 32
channels of AI and pops them into a network variable for a host program
to read several times a second. I build and deploy the app as a
startup so that it starts every time the PXI RT system boots. I
want to move the RT box to another computer that has LV, but not LV-RT.
I first tried using the variable server on the host.
The LV box boots and the app starts. I start my program on the
host, and it connects. Everything is fine.
However, to make the transition to another computer
easier, I would like to host the network variables on the RT box.
Then I don't have to deploy them to the network variable engine on the
new computer. When I write the program this way, the RT half
still boots and runs. Using the variable monitor program, I can
see that the variables are hosted on the RT box and are being
updated. So I open the host program in LV and start it. It
has to deploy some sort of connection to the network variables, so a
deploy dialog pops up. It finds out that the RT box already has
an app running and says that if I continue to deploy, that app will be
stopped. If I cancel, the host app doesn't run. If I don't
cancel, the RT app stops. I have to connect to the RT box again
and redeploy the RT app. Then both are running and I get data.
Is there a way to host the variables on the RT box, and
have the RT program start automatically on bootup, and have LV for
Windows start a program that gets the variables off the RT box from a
Windows machine that doesn't have RT?
Thanks,
Dave

• Deploying Existing Web App With New JWS

Hi all,
I've been banging my head against a brick wall for a few days on this, but I'm sure it must be something trivial. Hopefully someone here will have some advice...
In a nutshell, I'm working on an existing web application, running on Weblogic 8.1, in a clustered environment. I've added a new JWS web service which is largely standalone, but it uses controls from elsewhere in the application.
Locally, on my development box, it works perfectly - I can run it from Weblogic Workshop, and see the handy test form to run the web service, as well as seeing the WSDL by pointing my browser at http://localhost:7001/app/path/Service.jws?WSDL
However, I've now built the EAR for the whole application, and deployed it to our test environment (clustered - a mirror (hopefully!) of the production environment).
When I go to http://test-box:7002/app/path/Service.jws?WSDL I see a nasty-looking error page that looks like:
WebService ERROR
Error:
null
Stack Trace:
null
When I try the same URL without the ?WSDL on the end (so just http://test-box:7002/app/path/Service.jws), I see the nice Weblogic Web Service page, showing that it knows there's something there, but it has no content, just the 'Overview' tab, followed by:
Public Information
about Service.jws Web Service
and that's it - locally I see the same thing, but with options for viewing the WSDL and testing the service.
I'm confident that the URL is correct, because if I put rubbish in, I get a different error message.
Reading around, I've found lots of resources for 'how to deploy a web service to a production environment' for Weblogic 7, but much less for 8.1. I've seen references to jwsCompile, for example, which I think is specific to 7, because I can't find any references to it in the 8.1 docs, but perhaps that's wrong?
I'm pretty sure there's a configuration setting I'm missing, or a step in the deployment, but I'm stuck as to what it is!
Any advice gratefully received.
Edit: I should have mentioned that there are two other JWS's in the same app, both of which have the same symptoms as my new one (they've been there for a while, but are unused).

My gut reaction is that there might be an issue with the frontend settings not set up correctly, see 9.2 docs in lieu of 8.1 docs:
http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs92/webserv/setenv.html#wp220521
You should also open a support case as they could probably identify your issue quickly.

• Deploying a web app with errors

Good day,
We are migrating an older application into a WebLogic Portal 10.2 environment. We have Ant scripts to do the deployment from the command line but we want to use the Workspace Studio capabilities to deploy JSP changes to the application. The problem is that the application was architected to dynamically include JSP fragments into other JSPs. These fragments have objects defined in other JSPs and therefore show up with errors in the problems tab in Eclipse.
Is there a way to force an application to deploy even in this case or do we have to keep deploying/redeploying from the command line? This takes much longer than pushing the single files so this is why we are trying to figure out how to do it within the tool.
Thanks,
Sean

I have created a web application and have a jsp host.
I have 2 questions:
1-How do I deploy to the host. please explain. is this host a 3rd party? if so, ask them.
if the host is tomcat running on a machine that you have control of, create a WAR file and put it in the /webapps directory.
>
2-I also want to add a tomcat realm and have been
told to edit the server.xml file and web.xml file you should not edit the server.xml. just put a WAR file in the /webapps directory. no need to edit server.xml.
web.xml is part of the standard web app deployment. your app should have one, and it needs to be in the WEB-INF directory.
are these found on the host??
please offer a confused guy some helpYou should read "My First Web App" on the Tomcat page.

• How can I deploy an ipad app with preconfigured settings?

I am looking to deploy an app to an ipad cart and would like to configure the app settings prior to deployment so as not to have to set them on all ipads individually. Is this possible with apple configurator or would I need an alternate MDM solution?

you can restore a backup from apple configurator of the ipad which you've configured the app and backed up which will restore some app preferences, depending on the app
you'll have to test it to see what works
normally passwords are not copied
you can also use itunes backup as well
OSX server MDM, profile manager allows custom profiles
which you maybe able to use to configure the app and push settings out to devices
I can't remember if apple configurator allows for custom settings

• JDEV deployment of web app with custom JAAS login module fails

For the first time, I am trying to implement a custom JAAS login module.
JDEV deployment to standalone OC4J only fails when my orion-application.xml is included. The deployment fails with a java.lang.InstantiationException.
This what I have done:
1) Wrote a custom LoginModule called com.whirlpoool.sjtc.jaas.gpa.LDAPLoginModule.
2) Put it and its dependent classes in a jar named sjtcjaas.jar.
3) Put the jar in $ORACLE_HOME\j2ee\home\lib
4) Changed library_path in $ORACLE_HOME\j2ee\home\config\application.xml to
<library path="../../home/lib/scheduler.jar;../../home/lib/sjtcjaas.jar" />
5) Added an orion-application.xml to the JDEV project. (I used an Oracle How-to as a pattern, see below.)
I think I'm close but no cigar, yet. Any help would be appreciated.

• Deployment of enterprise app with external resources (binary file)

Hi. Where do I configure/add external resources (such as a text or binary file) in an enterprise app so that they will also be deployed to a WebSphere Express server? Should they be added to the enterprise app at all, or should they simply be moved up to a server directory? (I am trying to avoid a hardcoded file path in my servlet.)
I could use a properties file, but I was wondering if there is something in one of the deployment descriptor settings that would help me out?
I need one of my servlets to stream in this external binary file after the enterprise app has been deployed to a WebSphere Express server.
Thank you.

Normally, the context of the bin directory or the WASHOME will be the startup directory for the server. If you use File IO without a path it will pick it up from this directory. so u can place the file in this directory so that ur Servlet can stream the file.

• Deployment of Java App with 3rd party dll

Hi,
I am developing one application on windows environment. I am using netbeans 6.0 as my IDE. in this application I have to use 3rd party dll along with one 3rd party jar library. this jar library hides all the implementation of the native methods. So i don't have to use native methods in my application directly which means that I just need to call the java classes of the vendors jar library. I am able to execute the application in Netbeans. but I am not able to deploy the application. I want to know that how should i deploy my application which will be simple jar with vendors library and the dlls, so that user just have to run the application just through the command line( java -jar myapp.jar)

no you didn't understood the question. Wrong.
I understood the question.
You however didn't understand the response.
So let me expand on it.
The library consists of java and dlls. There is absolutely no way that it will run on a client box without the dlls. So they must be delivered in some way.
Now I suppose they could have encrypted/packed the dlls in some fashion but that isn't likely. And if it is then the java code of the library is responsible for loading them and there will be nothing you can do about it.
Excluding that.....
Shared libraries can ONLY be loaded via one of the following methods.
1. The dlls must be in the PATH environment of the application
2. The path must be explicitly provided in the application.
For the libraries you have one of the following will be true
1. The dlls must be in the PATH environment of the application
2. The path must be explicitly provided from your code and passed to the library code.
3. You must explicitly load the dlls in your code and hope that the library code is smart enough to deal with it.
For option 2 the library must provide a method for you to pass a path.
For option 3 the library code must be written to support this.
For option 1 you will need to modify the client in some way to provide for the PATH (which you can do in various ways, none of which have anything to do with Java specifically although 'WebStart' or whatever it is called might do it.)

• Read LabVIEW shared variables ( network variables?) with VB6

Hi, i need to read some LabVIEW shared variables (network variables?) using a VB6 program.
Is it possible?
I think that yes, using Measurement Studio for VB6 but I don't know how and I haven't found information in the Measurement Studio for VB6 help file
Could some one send me a program example or explain me how it is possible to read LabVIEW shared variables fromVB6?

Hello quintella,
To be able to interface with LabVIEW
Shared Variables with Visual Basic 6 you will need to use NI Measurement
Studio, which ships with examples on how to use VB6 with DataSocketing. Apart
from Data Sockets, if you are using Measurement Studio 8.1 or higer, with the
Network Variable Library introducted in NI Measurement Studio 8.1, you can read
and write to shared variables in ANSI C, Visual Basic .NET or Visual C#. (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4679)
Here you have two links where you can
find more information about how to use the datasocket option. In addition, there
are several examples included in Measurement Studio with Network Variables and
Datasocket.

• Network variables hang subvi

I have a GUI with several subvis.
I am using an LV project (LV 8.2).
One of the subvis is used to construct a GPS string and hand it over to a RT (cFP-2120) deployed serial write vi using network variables.
If I run the subvi standalone from the project with the RT deployed vi all works perfectly.
If I open the GUI from the project, it also opens the GPS subvi now.
When I run the GUI it apparently tries to run the subvi and the subvi's front becomes a blank white window with only the subvi title bar showing.
It hangs in this postion and never gets any further.
Before I implemented the network variables for the serial write, the subvi did not open on GUI launch.
Further, the two are designed such that pressing a button on the GUI would open up the subvi as a dialog. Once the stop button on the subvi is clicked it would close down. This is how it used to work before I implemented the network variables. Now the GUI won't even run.

I don't get anything when running in highlight modem, just a blank white window.
I let the original run last night while I went home. It finally had come up and was running this morning.
After days of working with bindings, etc I finally started hacking off sections of my main VI today. It eventually started working.
I apparently have too much baggage or a conflict on the main vi structure.
I'm dealing with nearly 40 indicators/controls used to monitor or modify simulation values for an avionics simulator.
Clearly I'm not being effecient in memory management.
I do have multiple while loops monitoring and sending data.

• Measurment Studio 8.6 Network Variable and Compact FieldPoint

Hello,
Looking for Vb.Net 2005 and Measurment Stydio 8.x Example illustrating how to browse multiple cFP items based on Network Variables.
Thanks

Hi,
I don't think that you will be able to get the pop browser with network variables in Measurement Studio either. The only example I could find was the project in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\National Instruments\MStudioVS2008\DotNET\Examples\NetworkVariable\Basic\vb. In this you would have to hard code the shared variable that you want to use. Also, I found this article that might be interesting to you Migrating to Measurement Studio Network Variable from DataSocke.
I do have some good news on the cRIO front though, it supports both DataSockets and OPC.

• Cannot generate network variables - used to work

After a rather extensive edit of a project I found that I could no longer do anything with network variables and every time I tried it would cause LV to exit (very quickly). I started a new project but found I could not create any network variables. When I try I get the busy pointer (hourglass) for less than a second and nothing happens. This problem has caused work stoppage on a major project. I need a fix ASAP!!!

Mr6dof,
Firstly, if this is an extreme show stopper that is costing your company a lot of money for downtown, I would definitely reccomend using our support line and calling in. However, hopefully it is not that awful.
Have you tried this on multiple computers, or just your one?
This happens with every new project you create?
When you open LabVIEW again, does it give you a crash report?
Is it just network, or all shared?

• Producer/consumer architecture over network variables with Real-Time target.

Hi all,
I am maintaining a producer/consumer data acquisition program to be deployed on a real-time target. The main code is deployed to and run on the real-time target during experiments, but was having trouble because the program was originally designed to write all experimental data to disk on the real time during acquisition, which puts the whole experiment at the mercy of the hard drive. I am now trying to rework the code so that the host takes care of logging, so that my time-critical loops don't have to wait.
I am currently using LabVIEW 8.5
I have two questions:
First, how can I programmatically call the data-logging subvi on the host so that it runs in parallel with the main vi which runs the experiment and collects data on the real-time? I have attached the test code that I have been working with to figure this out, but it does not run the logging vi continuously in the background. I am aware that there is better functionality for this in newer versions of LabVIEW, but I would prefer not to upgrade unless there is no other option. I would like to be able to run my data-generating vi and have it start the data logging remotely.
Second, is there a way in the host VI to read values off the network variable using an event structure rather than polling it for updates?
Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

VI server
Mark the target VI as served on the machine on which it will execute and use VI server Call by reference to invoke the served VI.
This used to be taught as THE way to communicate syncronously with an RT app.

• How do I change the context-root of a web app with a deployment plan?

I've been trying to figure this out for several hours.
I'm deploying a .ear file which sets the context root for the single web application it deploys in its application.xml deployment descriptor:
<application>
<display-name>MyApp</display-name>
<module>
<web>
<web-uri>MyAppViewControler.war</web-uri>
<context-root>MyApp</context-root>
</web>
</module>
</application>
I want to change the context-root from /MyApp to something else when deploying the ear file. It seemed to me that using a deployment plan was the way to do this. But when I use this plan:
<deployment-plan>
<application-name>MyApp<application-name>
<variable-definition>
<variable>

<value>foobar</value>
</variable>
</variable-definition>
<module-override>
<module-name>MyApp</module-name>
<module-type>ear</module-type>
<module-descriptor external="false">
<root-element>application</root-element>

<variable-assignment>

<xpath>/application/module/web/context-root</xpath>
</variable-assignment>
</module-descriptor>
</module-override>
</deployment-plan>
I get an error:
weblogic.descriptor.DescriptorException: VALIDATION PROBLEMS WERE FOUND
/bea/user_projects/domains/devod1/nullplan.xml:0: problem: cvc-complex-type.2.4a: Expected element 'web-uri@http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee' instead of 'context-root@http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee' here in element web@http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee:<nullplan.xml>
I looked at http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs103/pdf/deployment.pdf which says:
"You cannot use a deployment plan to change the context-root in an application.xml
file. However, if an application is deployed as a library, you can either change the
context-root through an weblogic-application.xml file or use the deployment plan
to change the context-root in an weblogic-application.xml file."
I don't understand what this means. I'm not deploying my application as a library.
Does anyone know how to change the context-root for an application?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi James,
I am quite new to Welogic if i am wrong please correct me.I have re-deployed my application (.war) with this Plan.xml
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
<deployment-plan xmlns="http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/deployment-plan" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/deployment-plan http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/deployment-plan/1.0/deployment-plan.xsd" global-variables="false">
<application-name>BrowserR08.003</application-name>
*<variable-definition>*
* <variable>*
* <name>CONTEXTROOT</name>*
* <value>BrowserWeb/servlet/BrowserServlet</value>*
* </variable>*
* </variable-definition>*
<module-override>
<module-name>BrowserWeb.war</module-name>
<module-type>war</module-type>
<module-descriptor external="true">
<root-element>weblogic-web-app</root-element>
<uri>WEB-INF/weblogic.xml</uri>
<hash-code>1231953167814</hash-code>
*<variable-assignment>*
* <name>CONTEXTROOT</name>*
* <xpath>/weblogic-web-app/context-root</xpath>*
* <operation>add</operation>*
* </variable-assignment>*
</module-descriptor>
<module-descriptor external="false">
<root-element>web-app</root-element>
<uri>WEB-INF/web.xml</uri>
</module-descriptor>
<module-descriptor external="true">
<root-element>wldf-resource</root-element>
<uri>META-INF/weblogic-diagnostics.xml</uri>
</module-descriptor>
</module-override>
<config-root>/export/home1/tecapp/BrowserR08.003/plan</config-root>
</deployment-plan>
I do not know wether i will require the other module descriptor definition in this Plzn.xml. Now when I go to following link.
Deployments --> MyApp --> Testing
It gives me following url as a test page:
http://localhost:7001/BrowserWeb/servlet/BrowserServlet
as soon as i click on to the above link it redirects me to following.
http://localhost:7001/BrowserWeb/servlet/BrowserServlet/servlet/BrowserServlet
Same if i remove these context-root part my normal Testing menu shows me following link as my webapp access path
http://localhost:7001/BrowserWeb <-- My war file name is BrowserWeb.war so it is default name of my deployed application if i am not wrong
and as soon as i click on above link it redirects me to the following one.
http://localhost:7001/BrowserWeb/servlet/BrowserServlet
It means application server know that my full web access page is with '*servlet/BrowserServlet*' because its adding it in both the cases.
What I want is a constant URL whcih does not change?
Hope this helps :)

• Network variable don't work with VBAI 2010 and windows 7

Hi,
I actually have an issue with 2 EVS 1464 (windows 7) and VBAI 2010.
I have to use network variables to allow communication between both EVS but I can't use it. My network is ok (I can make a ping betwen both equipement) but I can(t acces the network variable.
I have made a test with VBAI2011 EVS / VBAI2010 PC windows XP --> it works. (but I don't want to use VBAI 2011).
Have you got some solutions to solve my problem?
Thanks

Hello,
Here are several documents which could be useful for you :
Using the LabVIEW Shared Variable
Troubleshooting Network-Published Shared Variables
How Can I Use Shared Variables to Transfer Data from Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (VBAI) ...
You can also try something. For this, you must go to the VBAI EXE here:
For 32-bit machines:
C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Vision Builder AI 20XX\
For 64-bit machines:
C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Vision Builder AI 20XX\
Right-Click on 'Vision Builder.exe' then select Properties. Make sure that 'Run this program as an administrator' is checked.
Click OK and then try running VBAI again. You may have to re-deploy the variables in variable manager before they will properly work.
