Deploying Windows 8.1 on Mac Pro's Late 2013 model

Hi!
I am trying to figure out how to use MDT to deploy Windows 8.1 on the new trashcan Mac Pro's.
This is what I've done so far.
Disabled the default Format and partiton step with the property DONOTFORMATANDPARTITION=YES just to get rid of errors at the end, i have alos tried to remove the Volume entries in this step with out the above mentioned property.
In this step i have also set the Disk type to GPT and checked the Create Extra 'Active' Partition
Created a custom answer file to diskpart with the following command
sel dis 0
sel par 4
format fs=ntfs quick override
active
exit
Running my custom diskpart step after the default one.
Changed the default Install Operating System step to install on disk 0 partition 4.
All seems to work fine until the computer reboots and i should start windows to continue with the deploy.
Instead of booting windows it boots into OSX.
I've tried to change the start disk with the OS utility, but it gives the error "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk."
Ive tried the exact same thing on a older Macbook Pro, and this works flawless. It seems that Apple dropped some legacy support in the new EFI firmware on the new Mac Pro.
If i try to use bless with the --legacy parameter it tells me "Legacy mode is not supported on this system". I used legacy to boot windows on the older Macbook Pro.
Anyone got this working or have any suggestions?

Solved it!
It's not nice, but hey it works.
Here is how i did it.
I scrapped the idea of using any form of script (Applescript) or other custom stuff.
Instead I just fooled Boot Camp Assistant to think inserted a "BootCamped" USB even tough I inserted the LiteTouchPE_x64 based USB. The only files/folders Boot Camp Assistant looks for seems to be.
$WinPEDriver$
BootCamp
BootCamp\BootCamp.xml
setup.exe
autorun.inf
So just create the folders $WinPEDriver$, BootCamp
Create an empty BootCamp.xml file inside the folder BootCamp
copy setup.exe from the Windows media. (Might work with an empty txt file renamed, havent tested)
copy autorun.inf from the Windows media. (Might work with an empty txt file renamed, havent tested)
Start Boot Camp Assistant, uncheck the first 2 boxes and leave the one about creating a partiton.
Desiced on the BootCamp partition size.
And then next next finish :)

  • Is it possible to install Thunderbolt port on a Mac Pro (not the 2013 model) ?

    Hi,
i found something here in the forum but i can't really understand if is possible or not to install a thirdy part pci or something card that give the thunderbolt port to the older Mac Pros.

thanks, what a shame.... now would be awesome to take a 12 core mac pro monster from previous generation, maybe is not an option in long period investment.

  • Mid 2010 Mac Pro vs Late 2013 Mac Pro

    Hi folks,
I am currently running an late 2009 8-core MacPro and an late 2013 quad-core iMac. I mainly use After Effects, Final Cut Pro and Cinema 4D for TV and internet motion graphics. While 3D (espescially with v-ray) is getting more relevant in my daily work I would like to upgrade my Mac Pro to a faster system.
The Cinema 4D community can measure the render speed of a system with a tool called Cinebench. Today I compared the specs of these two:
12-core Mid 2010 2,93 GHz MacPro with two X5670 processors and the new
    12-core Late 2013 2,7 GHz MacPro with E5-2697v2 processor.
The 2010 one has a cinebench score of 1400 and the 2013 MacPro has 1600. So they seem to be very close.
Are there any reasons to spend 2-3000 Euros more for the new Mac Pro when Thunderbolt is not that important and the speed of an GeForce GTX 680 is enough compared to the FirePro cards????
    Thanks for your input....

Do I have to swap the mainboard too? Or are the sockets the same for the old Nethalem Xenon and the newer Wesmare one???
You DO NOT have to swap the logic board.  The 2009 and 2010 Mac Pros use the same hardware (main board included).
The 2010 simply has a modified boot rom firmware that accomodates the Westmere 6-core CPUs and faster ram.
The only thing preventing you from using those Westmeres in your 2009 is firmware.  Not hardware.
It should be mentioned that swapping CPUs in a 2009 dual-socket Mac Pro is trickier than the single.  Apple used CPUs without the lids (Integrated heat spreaders).  Your replacement CPUs will have the lids creating a differenc in height when attaching the heat sinks.
You'll need new thermal padding and you will need to be very careful when tightening the bolts.  Many use washers to prevent over-tightening, though some suggest it is not necessary.
There are guides online for this procedure.  A bit more of a sweat than the single-socket version where CPU is a simple drop-in replacement.

  • Install Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro 13" late 2013

    Hi
I'm trying to install windows on my mac since 2 days.
The version of OS X i'm running is yosemite. The version of windows  i bought from the microsoft store is an iso version of windows 8.1 Professional.
This is my procedure to install windows:
    1) open boot camp and select all of checkbox
    2) in the next page i select the iso of windows and insert my usb 3.0 Kingston DataTravel 16gb
    3) bootcamp downloads all the necessary
    4) when it asks me to choose the size of the windows partition i move the indicator to 100gb
    5) bootcamp reboot my mac, in this moment i don't know what to do. i hear the sound but my mac show a black screen for a long time. After 3 hours of black screen i decide to shut down it. if i press the power button the mac starts but after few minutes it shows me a black screen with this message:  No bootable device -- insert disk and press key.
Why does it happen? i have a usb in my port.
If i start my mac and press the option button, after the mac shows me the boot page, i insert my usb and it show me (MAC, recovery, windows and uefi).
if i select uefi, my mac shows me this page: http://i62.tinypic.com/n6tlb6.jpg and if i try to install windows 7 i have the same problem.
How can i fix this issue?
    Please help me guys

Maybe people have found a solution already but yesterday I managed to install Win 8.1 as a BootCamp on my new 15" retina MBP.  I followed the steps John Guo described but with a couple of changes as his approach failed for me.
    1. Make sure you are starting from a single partition.
    2. Create the Windows install USB from the ISO and also allow BootCamp Assistant to create download the drivers - but untick the option to install windows.
    3. Open Disk Utility and create a new partition and format as MS-DOS (FAT) rather than leave as free space.
    4. Restart your Mac and use the option to boot into the Windows part of the USB not the EFI-boot.
    5. Follow the install
    6. When it comes to the drive selection select the FAT drive. Windows installer will say it cannot install here as it needs to be and NTFS partitiion (in previous atempts I always got the message to say the partitiion was using GUI partition table so could not install even though it was formatted to NTFS).
    7. The format to NTFS should work fine and install proceed.
    8. When the installer reboots the machine you will need to use the boot option to ensure you boot back into Windows.
    9. Once installed the bootcamp driver install runs automatically and for me all drivers run fine even the NVIDIA, which I've seen some people mention having issues with.
I was inpressed with Windows automatically scaling the text to 200%, which meant it was using the full 2880x1800 resolution so everything was crisp but the windows and text was scaled nicely. I changed this 150% to give me some more real estate.
I'm guessing that by formatting the new partition as FAT it creates a MBP within the new drive that is writable by windows but I'm not a windows guru so this is a guess. But anyway, this work perfectly.
    hope this helps some people.

  • Resolution issue with macbook pro 13 (late 2013) and dell u2711

I have a Dell U2711 (native resolution 2560x1440) that I use without issue with a macbook pro late 2007 (running 10.10.x), various iMacs and Macbook air 2011 running 10.10. When I say without issue, the display works at its native resolution.
Last week we got a MacBook Pro 13in, late 2013 model.
If I connect this macbook via either thunderbolt connection to the u2711 using either DVI port on the dell, the maximum resolution that I can use is 1920x1080. I am using apple mini displayport to DVI adaptors (I have tried 2 different ones and 2 different DVI cables, with no improvement). Clicking option + scaled in sys prefs does not give the native resolution as an option.
However, I just discovered that if I use a DVI to HDMI adaptor and I connect the macbook to the display I get the full native resolution without issue (2560x1440).
I have zapped the pram, powered down the display etc etc etc and it made no difference.
I would prefer to use the mini DIsplayPort to DVI adaptor rather than HDMI, any suggestions appreciated.
    TIA.

  • Trying to install Windows 7 on my mac pro

Trying to install Windows 7 on my mac pro.  I'm running 10.6, I have boot camp 3.04 and after I partition and install the disc (using 32bit) it restarts automatically and freezes on a black screen.  I have updated my software so what should I do?  Thanks.

A., Use 64-bit for sure. You have too much RAM and hardware and VRAM
    B. Put Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1, you have a dual processor you need Pro.
    C. A dedicated drive for Windows.
    D. At least 50GB
    E. most important, pull all drives out and leave in just the drive Windows will install onto.

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
Windows does not understand it is a guest on your Mac, and throws garabge wherever it pleases.

  • Problems installing Windows 7 on the Mac Pro 3,1

I am having huge issues intalling WIndows 7 on this Mac Pro. I bought 2 new SSDs one for OSX and one for Windows. OSX is running great and i ran bootcamp assistant and selected the second SSD and chose to use intire drive and rebooted to start the installation. Everything starts but installer gives an error saying it could not be installed on that drive. I searched the forums and found that you have to remove all ither drives while installing windows so i rebooted and tried again and everything went fine. once everything was done, all updates installed, bootcanp drivers instelled etc I shutdown and pluged the othe drive back in and windows never booted again. I removed all drives but the windows drive and same thing, no boot. I have erased the drived and gone through the whole process several times with same results everytime.

Well I finally got it running smooth again, turns out that one of the windows updates changed the way the licensing works and for some odd reason it no longer works on Mac, go firgure lol. I ended up giving my windows 7 license to a friend who just built a PC so it worked fine for him but I am out $139 .
To get it working again I had to take my Mac Pro to work and let the IT guys install the Enterprise Edition and activate it againist the companies activation server. Works great now but it means I will have to take it to work every 6 months now for activation
I wish Microsft would stop making things so hard for us Mac guys.

It sounds like it is time to restore from the backups you made just before making the disk changes.
You can re-partition and restore your backups.  If you didn't make backups first (you were warned that it might damage things and to make sure you had a good backup) then you will need to repartition everything and reinstall from scratch...

I have contacted Apple Support team. They have tested the hard disk while booting from Mac OS and all the reports showing as hard disk is fine. Then I thought might be it was some virus and removed the Bootcamp partition and re-installed Windows 7 Operating System. But once updated Windows 7 with latest updates. This message showing again.
Would you please help me out to fix this issue. Anybody faced similar issue?

Now the big question is : Why I've this type of issue with 2 MBA and 1 Macbook pro 15".
Their configurations are the same : windows 7 with truecrypt.
Maybe Windows drastically reduces the lifetime of the Apple SSD drive.
The 3 Mac are used for less than 6 month !!!!

  • I have Windows 8.1 installed on my Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) and it keeps on crashing with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD error

I have Windows 8.1 installed on my Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) and it keeps on crashing with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD error. Is this an issue with the bootcamp driver not compatible with Windows 8.1? or is there something I can do to fix this.
I also keep getting WHEA-Logger Event-ID 19 warning events in the Windows Event Logs with the following details.
A corrected hardware error has occurred.
    Reported by component: Processor Core
    Error Source: Corrected Machine Check
    Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
    Processor APIC ID: 3
The details view of this entry contains further information.

likely win8.1 dont have official bootcamp support yet
1/3 of my logins into win8.1 result in a fatal bluescreen
was the same deal when I installed win8 before official support
and when the drivers with official support was released the issue went away
