Need Help Deploying Creator Project with Derby as Embedded
HI,
I have developed a web app using creator and the derby database instance that runs within creator. Now I want to war up the app and include the derby db as an embedded database. I have included the derby jar file in my lib directory and have created a new datasource with the derby embedded driver for testing. I cannot seem to get the db to run as embedded. My data source is setup as follows:
dataSource name="DerbyTest3"
driverClassName="org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver"
url="jdbc:derby:../sample"
validationQuery="select * from "
username="dbadmin"
password="7237EACC50DB74EF"
/>
The sample database was copied from the creator source tree and inserted under WEB-INF
When I try to connect I get the following error:
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the web application. Please review the following stack trace for more information regarding the error.
Exception Details: org.apache.jasper.JasperException
java.sql.SQLException: Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Connection could not be allocated because: Database '../sample' not found.
Possible Source of Error:
Class Name: org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper
File Name: JspServletWrapper.java
Method Name: service

any help greatly appreciated.

garffOne of our developers mentioned this, but it's also in the derby ref manual for the SQLException you're getting:
http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.2/ref/rrefattrib26867.html
sounds like you needed to append
;create=true
to the JDBC Url...

Edited by: js0n on Nov 14, 2007 1:13 PMI face same problem,,
the reason behind it is the user and password for the connection should not be blank...
and I resolve it in this way
1. Go to Source Packages > META-INF
2. Open persistence.xml as plain xml
3. Change the value of the following properties to any thing except blank one of them should be blank thus you got the exception
<property name="toplink.jdbc.user" value="app"/>
<property name="toplink.jdbc.password" value="app"/>

CR4E 1.0 - need help to setup derby driver
Hello!
Im trying to follow Getting Started Guide and on the page 11 I see "Go to Database Explorer". CR4E doesn't have this view.
I go to the "Window -> Preferences ->Connectivity - Driver Definitions" and add a record for Derby Driver 10.1 (Derby Embedded JDBC Driver), as mentioned in Guide, add two jars as driver files (derby.jar and Xtreme.jar from <CR4E folder>\plugins\com.businessobjects.crystalreports.samples_1.0.4.v1094\SampleDatabases), set connecton URL as "jdbc:derby:classpath:/Xtreme;create=true", DB name as "classpath:/Xtreme" and user id set as "bobj".
After that in "Data Source Explorer" I've created a new record for Database with type "Derby Embedded Database". Ping test was successful. But after connection I don't see any schemas. And in Eclipse dir file "dreby.log" has been created with following record:
2009-03-05 09:20:28.250 GMT:
Booting Derby version The Apache Software Foundation - Apache Derby - 10.1.1.0 - (208786): instance c013800d-011f-d5ef-102b-000002537450
on database directory classpath:/Xtreme
Database Class Loader started - derby.database.classpath=''
How to setup derby driver properly? Can anybody help me? Is there anybody who successful followed this Guide?
Help will be appriciated.
Regards, LevHey Lev,
I have not done much with Derby so cant help on that side, but for the Data Source Explorer issue, if you go Window >> Show View >> you should be able to get to the DS Explorer that way (From the CR perspective)
Hope that helps abit.
Does the "Sample Reports" not already come with Derby connections setup, maybe look at their
settings. But as I said I have not played around with this type of connection, sorry.

Please give me a suggetion..aamirym wrote:

However I would be really surprised if Derby came anywhere to even close to the performance of Oracle/MS SQL Server for all situations.
So if you picked Derby inappropriately for the needs of the business then you have a problem. -

Help me find out the error in my first hello application
Hello every body !!!!
I am new to JEE.I am competent on JDK and also have worked on Tomcat JSP,servlet.
But i am having problem running my first JEE programme.
I have Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 with NetBeans 6 on WinXP.
I have used NetBeans 6 hence those comments are there.
Below are the code i have used:
In the hello-ejb module i have following Bean and remote interfaces==>>>
package hello;
import javax.ejb.Stateless;
@Stateless
public class HelloBean implements HelloRemote {
private String name="Yoodleyee";
public String sayHello() {
//return null;
return "My Name is "+name;
// Add business logic below. (Right-click in editor and choose
// "EJB Methods > Add Business Method" or "Web Service > Add Operation")
package hello;
import javax.ejb.Remote;
@Remote
public interface HelloRemote {
public String sayHello();
In the Hello-app-client module i have main()==>>
package hello;
import javax.ejb.EJB;
public class Main {
@EJB
private static HelloRemote helloBean;
* @param args the command line arguments
public static void main(String[] args) {
// TODO code application logic here
System.out.println("Hi "+helloBean.sayHello());
since this program does not require deployment descriptor and also NetBean creates its own deployment discriptor hence i have not written any.
While the BUILD is successfull.But when Run this application I get deployment error.I am pasting the error stack below:

Problem with Java EE 5 and derby
have a problem with the database connectivity in the examples of Java EE 5, I have the NETBEANS 5.5 with Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9, and with the derby database.
I just try to run my application, but there is not connectivity with the database. I review all the configurations and step to follow to run the examples, and does not even work.
The server.log, show this:

And the table exist in the database.
Some body can help me?
Thanks.You probably made the same mistake as I did and added the tables manually to the "sample" database instead of the "sun-appserv-samples" database.

When I connect to the Derby database in Eclipse using the embedded driver, I can successfully drag and drop tables to create a report. This driver uses the derby.jar file and has no package sealing violations popping up.
<br/>
<br/>
When specifying a driver for a new derby database in Eclipse, the default Derby client driver expects to use the derbyclient.jar driver file. If I only specify this as the driver file this is the error I get:

The error I initially posted resulted after I added the derby.jar as a driver file in addition to the derbyclient.jar, which I don't think is supposed to be done now that I am thinking about it, but I did it because of the class not found exception above. Is this perhaps simply a bug that it is trying to utilize the derby.jar embedded driver when the client driver should be used instead? Or am I doing something wrong myself?

HOw to create a foreign key in Derby netbeans 5.0
I am trying to create a primary key in my database/web java application. I am using netbeans 5.0 and java vr5. I have put the following line in the DERBY SQL editor:
ALTER TABLE staff ADD CONSTRAINT staff_fk FOREIGN KEY (staffID) REFERENCES staff (staffID);
this returns Error: staffID is not a colum in Table of VTI skill
However I have got a staffID Column in the table. Is this a BUG in netbeasn 5.0 or am I doing this incorrectly please can anyone show me a way round this problem. Iam suppose to use CMP or something please help.
thanks in advanceALTER TABLE "staff" ADD CONSTRAINT "staff_fk" FOREIGN KEY ("staffID") REFERENCES "staff" ("staffID");

How to insert a java object int derby database
hi,
i have a problem , ie..i want to insert my java object int database derby.and also i need to retrieve that object from database whenever i need. Any body help me to do that in derby...
ThanksOr you would design a table where the columns of the table correspond to attributes of the object. Then you would make a row by writing out the attributes to the columns they correspond to.

I am currently migrating from MySql to Derby.
I have been developing a MRPII package for a while now and whilst my classes worked with MySql I am finding difficulty with implementing them using Derby.
I have developed a GUI interface for MRPII functions and use a Database Interface class to connect to the database.
The Database Interface class gives me the capability of reading and writing from a database.
I extend this capability to sub classes ie part, customers, suppliers, work orders.
The problem I have is with the ' "+standardCost+" ' type statements. In MySql, the database engine recognises that the standard cost variable is a double though using Derby I get the following Errors.

Executed statement INSERT INTO part VALUES('BUDGET500', 'PENTIUM','76.0', '86.0','EACH','MP','7','33')
The only solution I see is giving each subclass of Database Interface the individual capability within that class to connect to the database and use prepared statements.
Does anyone know if Derby has the capability of processing the updates using a similar format as shown in my code.

JimI am currently migrating from MySql to Derby. Dear God, why?I am using the embedded functionality.

and whilst my classes worked with MySql I am
finding difficulty with implementing them using
Derby.That suggests that your Java code relies too heavily
on MySQL features. You didn't make your code
portable enough.
I have developed a GUI interface for MRPIIfunctions
and use a Database Interface class to connect tothe
database.
The Database Interface class gives me thecapability
of reading and writing from a database.
I extend this capability to sub classes ie part,
customers, suppliers, work orders.
The problem I have is with the ' "+standardCost+"'
type statements. In MySql, the database engine
recognises that the standard cost variable is a
double though using Derby I get the following
Errors.Right - you're counting on something that might not
be true for all databases. MySQL appears to be doing
an implicit conversion from string to double. Bad
idea.
SQL Exception: Columns of type 'DOUBLE' cannothold
values of type 'CHAR'. In Save Data errorcode30000
SQL Exception: Columns of type 'DOUBLE' cannothold
values of type 'CHAR'. In Save Data errorcode30000

VALUES('BUDGET500','A1',
'100.0','50.0','1.0','100.0')
Executed statement INSERT INTO part
VALUES('BUDGET500', 'PENTIUM','76.0',
'86.0','EACH','MP','7','33')Do you use PreparedStatements to escape strings and
dates for you? If not, you're in for a bumpy ride.
The only solution I see is giving each subclass of
Database Interface the individual capabilitywithin
that class to connect to the database and use
prepared statements.I would not have a single database interface. Each
class has its own requirements. How can a single
class know about all of them? Better to break your
persistence layer into several interaces, one per
persistent class.That is what I thought
>
Does anyone know if Derby has the capability of
processing the updates using a similar format as
shown in my code.I think your code is in trouble, Jim.Probably so, thought a redesign is not so much of a problem now as I am a bit more experienced than when I started out.
>
You don't use prepared statements, which would help
with your portability issues.
You have SQL embedded in the objects. I'd move it
out into a separate persistence layer.
You might want to read about Hibernate, an
object/relational mapping layer. You've got objects
and tables. Hibernate tools or Middlegen can
generate the XML mapping files for you. Once you
have those, you'll find that Hibernate will make
porting to another database a lot easier. It can be
as easy as changing configuration files.
I'd also look into Spring. It has some great
plumbing to help you deal with databases and lots of
other stuff.

} // end of database InterfaceI developed this code about a year ago and maybe it is time to simplify it.
With MySql I could create an instance of Database Interface or use one of its subclasses and perform any function on the database by calling its methods.
maybe it is time for a redesign!

Anybody who can help me? I really need your help
I've tried to execute J2ee tutorial examples.
I don't know why this sample didn't execute...I've already finished to set up J2EE and enviornment variables.
I was trying this part from j2ee tutorial titled as "Packing Web modules".
Whenever I type "asant create-war" to make web modules in command window. I always got error.
Packaging Web Modules(From J2ee tutorial for your information)
A web module must be packaged into a WAR in certain deployment scenarios and whenever you want to distribute the web module. You package a web module into a WAR using the Application Server deploytool utility, by executing the jar command in a directory laid out in the format of a web module, or by using the asant utility. This tutorial allows you to use use either the first or the third approach. To build the hello1 application, follow these steps:
In a terminal window, go to <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/.
Run asant build. This target will spawn any necessary compilations and will copy files to the <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/build/ directory.
To package the application into a WAR named hello1.war using asant, use the following command:
asant create-war
This command uses web.xml and sun-web.xml files in the <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1 directory.
To learn how to configure this web application, package the application using deploytool by following these steps:
Start deploytool.
Create a web application called hello1 by running the New Web Component wizard. Select FileNewWeb Component.
In the New Web Component wizard:
Select the Create New Stand-Alone WAR Module radio button.
In the WAR File field, enter <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/hello1.war. The WAR Display Name field will show hello1.
In the Context Root field, enter /hello1.
Click Edit Contents to add the content files.
In the Edit Contents dialog box, navigate to <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/build/. Select duke.waving.gif, index.jsp, and response.jsp and click Add. Click OK.
Click Next.
Select the No Component radio button and click Next.
Click Finish.
Select FileSave.
A sample hello1.war is provided in <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/provided-wars/. To open this WAR with deploytool, follow these steps:
Select FileOpen.
Navigate to the provided-wars directory.
Select the WAR.
Click Open Module.
I guess this step is for checking my system about setup information. I not sure how to change it.

Is there anyone who can tell me how to change it? I really need your help....
Thank you in advance.ok,
First of all make sure your tutorial folder is installed from the root:
C:\javaeetutorial5
or
D:\javaeetutorial5
it makes things so simple.
Secondly:
set your jee tutorial home
JAVAEE.TUTORIAL.HOME =
C:/javaeetutorial5
Thirdly: check in:
C:\javaeetutorial5\examples\bp-project
make a copy of the build.properties.sample save it as build.propropties, as a property file,
edit the properties file as in:
build.properties
As follows:
# uncomment the property javaee.home, and add the path
# to your GlassFish Java EE 5 SDK installation
javaee.home=c:/Sun/SDK
javaee.tutorial.home=c:/javaeetutorial5
# Uncomment the property j2ee.server.username,
# and replace the administrator username of the app-server
javaee.server.username=admin
# Uncomment the property j2ee.server.passwordfile,
# and replace the following line to point to a file that
# contains the admin password for your app-server.
# The file should contain the password in the following line:
AS_ADMIN_PASSWORD=admin1234and so fourth. Some of the settings as the application server name is all done for you
and then test it again.
Take care of editing the property file. It can give you headache.
Note also that this is for application server 9.1 - JEE5.

String driverName = "org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver";
Class.forName(driverName);
String url = "jdbc:derby://localhost:1527/table name";
String username = "username";
String password = "password";
connection = DriverManager.getConnection(url, username, password);you need to make sure that you have the derbyclient.jar file in the librarie for your project.
