Desc table_name statements no longer running in sql developer

simple desc statements like desc table_name; used to run in sql developer however they no longer work.
It was working a few days ago and now the same statements dont return any results. The tables exist as I can run select statements fine just not desc table_name;
Any ideas how this can be fixed?

I haven't had problems with the "desc table_name;" functionality for a long time - do you know of anything that has changed since they were working a few days ago?
If you run the following query with :1 being the table owner and :2 being the table name, do you get the columns listed?SELECT t.column_name "Name",

  • Calling from the application Slow vs. Running through SQL developer Fast

    Alright, we write many applications that make use of calling stored procedures in packages to return data. This is the only time i have ever encountered this issue and have not been able to pinpoint the cause.
    This application is very data-centric and is filled with calls to stored procedures and I would say about 80% run fine as in the time required to run is about the same as in SQL Developer maybe just a little slower due to the amount of data that may be returned to the application. The other 20% run horribly slow from the application and run lighting fast in SQL Developer and i cannot figure out why.
    I have traced the code right up to the .Fill on the Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataAdapter and that is where it just holds either for a long period of time or just forever, some of these i haved waited hours for and they have not finished running.
    For Example: I created a new page in the project and it makes a request through the use of ajax, when the request file is reached it performs two stored procedures from the same package (the only two procedures in the package). Both procedures take in three varchar2's and have an in out cursor, the cursor is returned into a datatable in the VB. The first query runs in a couple seconds returns the correct data etc. The second query, which takes .2 seconds on average to run from SQL Developer, just runs and runs and i have never actually even waited for it to finish because it takes so long. The specific example i am trying only returns 1 row with 7 columns, so there is not a large amount of data being passed back.
    I have seen this sort of thing happen on occasions, but everytime it was usually because the package was not compiled and was waiting on a view to finish before compilation and after killing the view it was fine. But this issue seems to happen randomnly with certain procedures and not others all in the same package.
    This issue happens on the same procedures everytime which would lead me to believe it is the procedure, but running them in SQL Developer shows me this is incorrect because they run exceptionally fast in some cases. I even went so far as to restart the entire database just in case there was some sort of lock causing this issue but this did not fix the issue.
    I have verified parameters, cursors, debugged the procedures, stepped every line of code, tried deleting and readding the oracle.dataAccess reference. I can't seem to figure this one out.
    It is causing alot of wasted time because i am forced to wait a horribly long time for these queries in order to test. If anyone has any clues, hints, or ideas as to what this could be please let me know! If the same issue exists when the application is moved into production it will be unnacceptable and the application utterly unusable.
    Thanks in Advance for any help!

    Hi,
    This is consistently reproducible with the problem procedure/operations? Total WAG here, but I've seen cases where having support for distributed transactions enabled causes the database to disable certain optimizations. Try setting Enlist=false in your connection string.
    Otherwise, I'd recommend enabling 10046 database trace and client side sqlnet trace to capture the problem behavior for further investigation. Oracle support can certainly give you a hand with that if needed.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

  • Create trigger not audited when run from sql developer Version 3.2.20.09

    Creating or editing a trigger is not being stored in the audit table when run from sql developer.
    Here is a sample script to show the issue:
    Grant Connect,create table,create trigger To testuser Identified By testuser;
    create table testuser.testtab(t1 number);
    Select Count(*) From Dba_Audit_Trail Where Owner='TESTUSER';
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER testuser.testtab_bi_trg BEFORE
      Insert
          ON testuser.testtab FOR EACH ROW
    begin
      null;
    end;
    Select Count(*) From Dba_Audit_Trail  Where Owner='TESTUSER';
    drop user testuser cascade;
    If I run the script from sql developer the CREATE TRIGGER statement does not get audited.
    If I run the script from sql plus or All Arround Automations PL/SQL Developer the CREATE TRIGGER statement does get audited.
    If I edit the trigger from sql developer the CREATE TRIGGER statement does not get audited.
    If I edit the trigger from  All Arround Automations PL/SQL Developer the CREATE TRIGGER statement does get audited.

    Have you tested my script? Does the "Select Count(*) From Dba_Audit_Trail  Where Owner='TESTUSER';" increment by 1 after each of the ddl statements or only after the Create table statement.
    Your question doesn't have ANYTHING to do with sql developer and should be posted in the Database General forum
    https://forums.oracle.com/community/developer/english/oracle_database/general_questions
    Yes - and it works just fine once you ENABLE AUDITING. Your scripIt  does NOT include the statements or code used to ENABLE auditing and, specifically, enable auditing for triggers.
    Auditing doesn't just 'happen'; you have to enable it and you have to specify any non-default auditing that you want to perform.
    Have you read any of the extensive documentation about auditing to learn how to use it?
    See the Database Security Guide
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e16543/auditing.htm
    Also see 'Auditing Functions, Procedures, Packages, and Triggers
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e16543/auditing.htm#BCGBEAGC
    And see the AUDIT statement in the SQL language doc for how to specify auditing of specific operations.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_4007.htm

  • All of a sudden my Enter key no longer works in SQL Developer.

    All of a sudden my Enter key no longer works in SQL Developer. I don't know how I managed to disabled it. Can anyone tell me how to re-enable it?
    I already tried the following:
    - I closed the application and re-opened it. - It didn't work
    - I re-started my machine. I didn't work
    Help! Thank you

    The same thing has just happened to me and this was very useful to correct the problem --- but now I am wondering why or how this happened. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't make any setting changes so why did I lose the Enter action?

  • Can extensions made in JDeveloper also run in SQL Developer?

    Hi Guys,
    Just wanted to ask,
    can extensions made in JDeveloper also run in SQL Developer?
    Also would like to ask, if you would like to sell your extension, does Oracle provide payment gateways, of some sort?
    Thanks for all your replies in advance.
    4 Eyes.

    This is a non-authoritative answer to your first question. I've used the extension developer kit in JDeveloper to create an extension for SQL Developer. I have not written an extension for JDeveloper, but I have looked at the sample programs that came with the kit. As far as I can see, the main difference is a few changes that need to be made in the extension.xml file - these mostly tell the IDE where to hook your extension.
    So I believe that it is theoretically possible to write an extension that works in either tool, but you will have to package the two extensions slightly differently. That said, I have to note that the documentation for either sort of extension is mostly in the form of examples. Until Oracle documents this better, it is probably going to take a good deal of trial and error to get it working.

    Around a month ago, a similar question appeared on Jeff's block... look for checkText in http://www.thatjeffsmith.com/ask-a-question/
    There was no resolution there, so (as the SQL Developer code in that area has not changed) I would tend to think it might have something to do with
    1. Your Locale affecting the Formatter class's parsing of that pattern; or
    2. A bug in the jdk version in use, probably also related to the Locale.
    I recommend upgrading to the latest jdk1.7.0_xx update.  If that does not solve the issue, then try changing the Locale.

  • Running Oracle Sql Developer under Red Hat 5

    Hello,
    I am trying to run Sql Developer but get those various errors (oracle 10g is installed and works).
    Am I trying to execute the wrong thing?
    [screen print|http://metalray.redio.de/dokumente/sqldeveloper.JPG]

    ok it was the wrong file. the right one is
    '/opt/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper.sh'
    which is then asking me for the pathname of J2SE, which is the java virtual machine I guess.
    typing in
    '/usr/lib/jvm/java which is then extendet to '/usr/lib/jvm/java/bin/java' does not work
    (although this directory exists)
    Any suggestions?

  • My arrow keys and backspace no longer works in Sql Developer

    In the work sheet of Sql Developer it is not allowing me to use my arrow keys or backspace key, I can use these keys in the result section but not in the worksheet section. When I use the arrow key it scrolls the page but the cursor stays in the same spot. My scroll lock is not on as these functions work everywhere else. I have looked at short cut keys to see if I hit smoething but not finding anything. Any ideas?

    This is a known problem practically impossible to reproduce reliably.
    It was not reported on the latest releases of SQLDeveloper, so if you are on an old release you might consider switching to the latest one.
    The workaround for the problem in older version requires you to load preset values for the shortcut in
    Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load PresetMind this will erase all your user defined shortcut keys

  • SQL Developer Locking up/Unable to Cancel long Running tasks

    I have had the same problem with a number of versions of SQL Developer (and version 3.2.09). It occurs when trying to cancel a long-running PL-SQL Function or procedure that has been started by 'Run' in SQL Developer.
    Select Terminate in Run Manager does not stop the job. Nor does trying to exit SQLDeveloper; it asks whether I want to kill the job; then doesn't kill it and doesn't exit either.
    Trying to save modifications to anything the process depends on results in SQL Developer locking for ~20 minutes.
    I have to resort to getting a DBA to manually kill the process at the server.
    Is there any possiblity of a workaround or a way of making the PL/SQL not lock so it can be terminated please?

  • Long running scripts

    Hi all!
    I am looking for a script with which i will be able to anlayse the long running pl/sql or sql -scripts.
    Is there another method except using dbms_application_inf.set_session_longops. May be there will be something like v$sqlara.
    I will be thankfull for any information
    Mehdi

    Welcome to the forums!
    Based on my experience you should be able to read a spooled SQL*Plus file while it's being written to. Maybe there is some oddity in your particular environment that is preventing that from happening.
    An alternative would be to wrap each SQL statement using spool so you have one result per file. Then if you need to you can concatenate all the files together at the end.

  • Long Running Reports

    I'm now writing some reports that are slow running. I've tuned the sql, however because the volume of data being returned and the complexity of the report queries the reports will likely never run faster then ~30 seconds.
    I'm using the ApEx advanced reporting (BIP) and ApEx version 3.0.1.
    What are some thoughts on how to best implement long running reports?
    Thanks,
    Todd

    Hi Dimitri,
    You asked...
    What happens when you run the report directly from BI
    Publisher?There are several reports from one application. I've run the report queries in OEM SQL Tuning Advisor and tuned them.
    I have not seen a noticeable difference in run times between submitting the reports from APEX or running them from BIP. The queries for these reports have the same run time when run through SQL Developer.
    The slow run time of the report queries can be traced to poor table design. The application is a bit of legacy application with the front end now being rewritten using APEX. The poor table design issues are magnified by the volume of data. I have plans to partition one of the transaction tables.
    Prior to rewriting the user interface in APEX the application was written in Oracle Forms. When written in Forms the application was a bolt-on to the Oracle applications. In that environment users could submit reports to the run in the background (via Concurrent Manger) then the report output was viewed later following the completion of the report.
    I'm pursuing a similar solution as the concurrent manager in Oracle applications but available in the APEX, BIP environment. The reports do run between 30 seconds to 1 minute which is to long for the users to wait on the submitting page. Any thoughts on how it is possible to run these long running reports without tying up the user’s page?
    I'll investigate dbms_scheduler and BIP APIs. I know BIP also has a scheduler available but I do not know much about it.
    Thanks,
    Todd

  • AUTOTRACE stats different in SQL Developer vs SQL Plus

    Using SQL Developer 3.2.20.09, database is 11.2 on Linux. I'd like to know why I get different stats when using AUTOTRACE in SQL Developer vs SQL Plus. If I do the following in SQL Developer and in SQL Plus I get a very different set of stats:
    set autotrace on
    select * from emp;
    set autotrace off
    I run this with "run worksheet" in SQL Developer and I see this set of stats:
    Statistics
    4 user calls
    0 physical read total multi block requests
    0 physical read total bytes
    0 cell physical IO interconnect bytes
    0 commit cleanout failures: block lost
    0 IMU commits
    0 IMU Flushes
    0 IMU contention
    0 IMU bind flushes
    0 IMU mbu flush
    I do the same in SQL Plus and I see these stats:
    Statistics
    0 recursive calls
    0 db block gets
    7 consistent gets
    0 physical reads
    0 redo size
    1722 bytes sent via SQL*Net to client
    519 bytes received via SQL*Net from client
    2 SQL*Net roundtrips to/from client
    0 sorts (memory)
    0 sorts (disk)
    14 rows processed
    A very different set of stats. The stats in shown in SQL Plus seem to be much more useful to performance optimization over the one shown in SQL Developer. Why the different set of stats for each? Thanks.

  • Long running database call

    Hi
    I have a scenario where a call to PLSQL is taking about 15+ minutes to complete.
    Calls to database through database adapter is a sync call in BPEL, so yes the timeout is making the transaction JTA inactive.
    I understand that increasing the transaction time out is not an option as the time to complete might vary based on amount of data to process.
    What are the best practices for designing this scenario?
    Every Little Help
    Kalidass Mookkaiah

    This is not a very good pattern as you have no viability of the second BPEL process, if this never gets invoked the first process will be none the wiser.
    Plus how does your second BPEL process kick off the long running PL/SQL, once it gets invoked you still need to call the PL/SQL. How is this achieved using this pattern?
    If you want to call a long running PL/SQL it can be achieved with AQ and correlations.
    1.) Create an async BPEL.
    2.) Invoke an AQ adapter that places a message on a request queue with a correlation id, so you need to use correlation sets.
    3.) You setup your PL/SQL to subscribe to this queue, so when a message is posted the PL/SQL is invoked.
    4.) Once complete it places the result on a response queue using the same correlation id
    5.) Your BPEL process is listening for that correlation id on the response queue. (I like to respond with the status of the PL/SQL)
    6.) Always best to have a pick activity after the receive so if the response is not within a timeframe you can implement some error handling.
    cheers

  • SQL script runs under SQL Devoper, will not run under UNIX, SQLPlus

    I have a sql program I developed under the SQL Developer tool and it runs fine. I have ftp'd the sql to the Unix server and I am trying to run the same program under SQL Plus in unix. The program echo's back the line number that is the last line number in the code before the 'Exception' code in the program and it goes out into never never land.
    I can't figure out why this runs under SQL Developer but will not run under SQLPlus in Unix. Any ideas would be appreciated!!!!

    Assuming that the ftp process did not append any invisible characters(which it usually does) at the end of each line,
    did you put the '/' symbol at the end of your program before running in sql*plus
    something like
    begin
    end;
    /
