Design Patterns used in ANT project

hi there:
I downlaoded the ANT source from Apache and I want to see some big pictures before I am buried by the source code. Like UML diagrams, Design patterns, etc. Is there any one having some good suggestions to help me understand ANT project easier?
Thanks,

The free version of Argo does not include reverse
engineering, AFAIK.v0.16.1 and the previous 0.14.1, does include reverse engineering for Class Diagrams in file->import sources.

  • Design pattern -- using the correct one...?

    I'm in need of some advice regarding design patterns in general.
    I have a prototype whereby Objects B, C and D observe Object A's attribute (let's call it theAttribute -- imaginative, eh? )
    In my system, every time theAttribute is changed, I've implemented the Gang's Observer pattern so that the observer objects are notified (...and do something with the information that Object A has changed in some way... they basically update a theTimestamp attribute when the subject's updated... but that really is beside the point right now).
    However, only ONE observer will ever be created for each observable subject.
    To my dismay, I've just been reading on the IBM Research site that the memory implications of this are horrendous (that for potentially a great many subjects only having a few observers each is bad practice) -- d'oh.
    I've looked at other ways I could achieve what I need to without the above practice, but the only things I can come up with are the Mediator pattern or the State pattern, neither of which I'm sure are ideal (the former because of I'm worried that it'd be total overkill, the latter because I don't really need dynamic reclassification if the truth's told, I think).
    Anyone got any thoughts on this? (I've considered referencing observers with their observables using a hash table but don't really wish to go down that route unless absolutely neccesary... it seems a bit like putting electrical tape over a sparking wire :) I'd rather just do it properly).
    Sarah.

    However, only ONE observer will ever be created for each observable subject.If you can absolutely, positively, definitely, mathematically, logically, legally
    and morally prove that fact, indeed, you're wasting some resources here,
    a couple of hundred bytes mayhap ...
    In the mean time, keep your Observer/Observable pattern/implementation
    or have a look at the PropertyChangeSupport class ...
    kind regards,
    Jos

  • Factory design pattern use

    Hi people, I have a question about a design I'm using.
    Lets say I have an object that can be a number between 1 and 100, or another couple of values such as not defined or implicit.
    I had a basic design that looked like this:
    public final class ObjectExample
        public static final ObjectExample NOT_DEFINED = new ObjectExample(-1);
        public static final ObjectExample IMPLICIT = new ObjectExample(-1);
        public static final ObjectExample createObjectExample(int value)
            if ((value < 1) || (value > 100))
                throw new IllegalArgumentException("Value is not valid");
            return new ObjectExample(value);
        private final int value;
        private ObjectExample(int value)
            this.value = value;
        public int getValue()
            return value;
    }Now this code does what I need, I was just wondering about the merits of using a factory method to create the objects. Why shouldn't I just move the logic of checking the value of the supplied value to the constructor and make that public?
    Basically, what I suppose I'm asking is, in this particular example, is there any need to use a "factory" method to create objects?
    Cheers, Boomah :o)

    In this particular case you could certainly put that logic in a constructor. However if you decided you wanted to use a Flyweight pattern and only have one instance of ObjectExample(1) instead of many, then you would need a factory method that created that one instance and always returned it when called with 1 as its parameter. You couldn't do that with a constructor.

  • Design Patterns that are used in standard j2se/j2ee classes/interfaces

    Hi All,
    I am understanding following design patterns (used within standard j2se/j2ee):
    Adapter
    Facade
    Composite
    Bridge
    Singleton
    Observer
    Mediator
    Proxy
    Chain of Responsibility
    Flyweight
    Builder
    Factory Method
    Abstract Factory
    Prototype
    Memento
    Template Method
    State
    Strategy
    Command
    Interpreter
    Decorator
    Iterator
    Visitor
    I want to see if/where these design patterns are used in j2se/j2ee classes/interfaces. i am looking for few examples of standard java classes/interfaces/cases where these design patterns are used by jdk developers.
    for e.g.
    WindowAdapter class is an example of Adapter DP.
    JOptionPane is an exmple of Facade DP.
    MouseListener is an example of Observer DP.
    Similarly, where can find examples of jdk classes/interfaces of the remaining DPs.
    I searched a lot of books, but they explain the DPs by creating their own classes/interfaces.
    I would like to see where these DPs are already utilised in std j2se/j2ee
    thanks,

    Then you can get the sources for the jdk and go through the classes yourself, identifying the patterns.

  • Producer/Consumer Design Pattern + DAQmx + Event Structure

    Dear community users,
    at the moment I try to implement the Producer/Consumer Design Pattern into my current project. For this purpose I am trying to make a "minimal-example" in which I use the Producer/Consumer Design Pattern for the data acquisition and analysis (display in GraphXY, calculation etc..) process. In the Producer Loop I perform the data readings via DAQmxRead.VI and in the Consumer Loop, in this example only, I display the data in a GraphXY. At the same time I want to control the data acquisition via an Event Structure, for example Start Measurement/Stop Measurement Buttons. To configure the measurement time, for example if the user only wants to measure 150 sec, I use the Time Out Event of the Event Structure. This is a technique which is often used, when data acquisition and Event Structures are used at the same time (Excuse me if this is wrong!). Due to understand the Producer/Consumer Design Pattern I looked up in the Template\Framework of LabVIEW.
    In the attachment you will find my "minimal-example", which -sadly-, not working. What should I do ?
    Thank you.

    Your VI will never stop due to the Ok Button that stops the producer loop is read OUTSIDE of the loop.  Add an event case for it.
    Move the Start and the Ok Button inside of their respective event cases.  This will allow the latch to reset when they are read.
    Change the Ok Button to a stop button.
    Use a Greater Or Equal instead of Equal for the measurement time comparison.  What if somebody randomly changes it to 0 on you?  Again, you will never stop.
    Is the DAQ only supposed to read for "Measurement Time".  Right now, it constantly reads.  So if you don't use the DAQmx Read, you will get a buffer overflow error.  You need to put the DAQmx Start Task inside of the Start event case and then the Stop DAQmx Task inside of the Timeout event case when the measurement time is exceeded.  You should also perform the read regardless inside of the Timeout event case.
    I HATE telling the consumer loop to stop by destroying the queue.  You can look data that way.  Instead, send something an empty array.  In the consumer, check for an empty array.  If it is empty, stop.  Destroy the queue only AFTER BOTH LOOPS HAVE COMPLETED.
    You should also report your errors in some way.  Simple Error Handler at the minimum.
    Since you are using Continous Samples, don't limit the buffer.  Leave the Samples per Channel unwired on the DAQmx Timing VI.

  • FIRST Robotics FRC - LabVIEW design pattern

    Can someone share his/her experience in the design pattern used in the FIRST Robotics FRC competition? Will the "producer-consumer" structure work on CRIO with LabVIEW real-time? or are there any advantages of teaching kids the design patterns (knowing we have only six and a half weeks to complete the project)?
    I have been using LabVIEW at work for a while, but never used CRIO and LabVIEW realtime. This year is my first year of being a mentor of a local high school robotics team. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Ian,
    In LabVIEW Real-Time, the producer-consumer structure is useful if you are trying to pass data from a high-speed, deterministic loop to a slow loop (i.e. one that is writing the data to a file). However, the design pattern is slightly different in Real-Time, as you will want to use FIFOs to transfer the data instead of queues. This design pattern may or may not be advantageous depending on your application. More information on this design pattern can be found here.

  • Design Pattern for ATE

    Looking for suggestions on the best design pattern (using OOP) for an automated test environment application. The current code (LabVIEW only, no Test Stand) has it's own UI and support VIs for selecting the test environment, sequence of tests to run, running a sequence, evaluating test results and outputting pass/fail reports (HTML) and test measurement result files (TDM). The intent was to give the developer a framework where he/she can concentrate on writing the actual tests. Unfortunately, in the environments where it is used, developers always find the framework lacking for their needs and so tend to have their own version by the time they are done. This thing does not scale well nor is it very flexible.
    This framework was originally written with LV 6.1. I put it in a LV2011 Project, but it won't build due to its sheer bulk so it's being run strictly under the development environment (which I hate doing). The whole framework needs a face lift.
    Any suggestions? I've looked at the AF but it seems "over-qualified" for this, plus I don't have a bunch of parallel processes in this case. Things run pretty much sequentially from the get go just by the nature of the testing.

    You could create pure virtual class that defines your test step API. Methods for the class would consist of things like setup, teardown, execute to name a few. Your developers could use this base class as the template and API for their tests. The methods regulate the format of the data exchange between your engine and their test. I would also recommend that you use packed libraries so that your test steps are basically plugins. Your test sequence would need to contain the name of the appropriate plugin to use in order to invoke the correct test step. This model is flexible and easy to extend.
    We are actually investigating using this same approach for our test system. Our current system uses TestStand and we are going to investigate TestStand 2012 ability to use dynamic dispatch to invoke our test steps. It should be interesting. We use other features of TestStand so it would be nice if we can make this work. In your case a LabVIEW only implementation should be fairly straightforward.

  • ABAP objects design patterns

    hi all,
        can any one send me the Design patterns used for ABAP objects programming in ABAP. eg mvc and sample code which uses the design patterns
    cheers

    Of course that program is not an object design pattern
    (Its just a little ABAP Objects syntax demo that I wrote  years ago
    I don't know about a list of OO design patterns implemented in ABAP Objects.
    A very simple one, a Singleton might look like this:

  • Design Patterns Web Site

    Hi,
    I was curious what everyone's opinion (or at least those who frequent this forum) was about a website explaining Design Patterns using Java.
    I was thinking about making a site which discusses various design patterns, including real-world analogies (to try and make things simple and clear), and sample code.
    i thought it might be a good idea, b/c I myself am trying to learn about design patterns (including when to use them and when not to use them)....and there is a lot of info on the web, but I learn best by example....so thats wherei got the idea for a straight forward site.
    what are your thoughts? I kind of like the style of O'Reilly's "Head First Design Patterns" as an approach. Let me know what u think..
    peace.
    craig

    wow, thats what i had in mind...and since a lot of the samples are C#...its easy to relate to java.
    thanks

  • What is recommended / preferred design pattern for Swing?

    I have been confused by the apparent variety of design patterns used when putting together a Swing GUI application. For example, one pattern does this:
    public class myclass extends JFrame {
    myclass() {
    // do all the stuff here
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // instantiate class here
    while another pattern goes like this:
    public class myclass extends JFrame {
    myclass() {
    super("title");
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // do all the stuff here
    Is there a preferred way to do this stuff, or is it a matter of personal preference?

    Hi
    I txnk there are no choice : the only valid aproach is (1)
    because :
    main is a "know" entry point just for instantiate some classes
    the event thread is alive after main is completed, so your app have a GUI elements who responds to some events via some classes (the listeners for these events).
    Of course you can add listeners at main level but, what hapen if
    you need these GUI in other app (the main func is only called when you invoke the JVM to an start class)
    Normally the JFrame have some member funct or some internals classes to respond some events (at this point there are some alternatives)
    Hope this help
    Bye

  • What Design Pattern - Change Language functionality

    On my application, I will have a series of buttons to choose
    a language. When the user chooses a language, all control labels,
    pop-up messages and others will change at the chosen language.
    I would like to do this from an OOP point of view and use
    Design Patterns. Which one would you recommend to use?
    My guess is the Strategy Pattern. Am I right?
    Thanks for any comment or link.

    The Strategy Pattern is used to swap algorithms dynamically.
    Based on user input a decision can be made to run a (set of)
    function(s). This behaviour is encapsulated in seperate objects.
    You just want to swap data at runtime. Or maybe set some
    behaviour regarding specific functions in languages like the way
    currencies are handled, measurements and the like. The latter would
    be implemented as Interpreter Pattern.
    When it's merely data that needs to changed/loaded at
    runtime, than it's more like a change of the Model in the MVC
    design pattern, using an Observer to notify all registered
    'listeners' and using a Command to get the thing going.

  • Which Design Pattern and how to design using OOP this scenario

    I am having trouble designing a module, can anybody help me?
    Because it will be hard to maintain this kind of module, I also think that this can test my skill of design pattern usage.
    Requirement
    This is basically an agricultural project (web application). I need to design a module where some calculation takes place.
    There are different crops involved like maize, tomato, okra etc. Each of these crops has different traits.
    Each trait has a measurement scale which lies in integer like 200-1000. Now let's say I have planted the crop and done measurement noted down the traits. Now I want to do some sort of measurement. Some measurements are simple and some are complex.
    Example
    Lets take an example of crop maize. I have recorded observations for 15 traits. (We'll use trait1-trait15 as examples, the actual name can be like plt_ht, yld, etc.)
    I recorded 5 observations for each trait:
    trait1 trait2 trait3 trait5 trait6..... trait15
    01,02,03,04 01,02,03,04 01,02,03,04
    User logs into system and selects his crops and enters data for these observations. I have to calculate either average or sum of the data entered for each trait.
    Complexity / centre of the problem
    So far it's simple but complexity comes when I have some different formulas for some of the traits.
    Example: trait YLD has a formula based on which I have to calculate its value, which may also depend on some other traits. Each different crop can have different traits.
    All this I am able to do - whenever user selects crop I will check for those specific traits and do calculations (if it's not a special trait then I either average or sum it, based on db entry), but there is a lot of hard coding.
    I would like to have suggestions on a better way of handling this.
    My code needs to handle both simple and complex calculations.
    Simple calculations are easy, I have take average of value entered for trait.
    The problem comes when I have to do complex calculations, since each crop have different traits with their own formulas, so to calculate I have to check for crop and then for complex trait. So I have to hardcode the trait name of complex traits.
    Can any tell me how I can design this using Java oops [?!?] so that I can make it generic?
    I have about 10 different crops. Some calculations are specific to crops, so there will be lot of code like the if below:
    hasZeroValue = (HashMap<String, ArrayList<String>>) dataValues[1];
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("MZ") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("Shelling")) {
        avg=HybridTestDataUtility.calculateAvg(traitName, dataPoint, dataTraits, traitValues,dataPvalues, dataPoint, type);
        avg=avg*dataPoint;
        traitAvg=getMaizeYeild(traitName, traitAvg, population, avg, hybrid, area);
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("OK") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("YLDGM")) {
        avg=HybridTestDataUtility.calculateAvg(traitName, dataPoint, dataTraits, traitValues,dataPvalues, dataPoint, type);
        //avg=avg*dataPoint;
        Object[] dataValues=getOKRAYield(traitName, traitAvg, population, avg, dividend,hasZeroValue,hybrid,repl);
        traitAvg = (HashMap<String, Float>) dataValues[0];
        hasZeroValue = (HashMap<String, ArrayList<String>>) dataValues[1];
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("HP") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("w1-w10")) {
        avg=HybridTestDataUtility.calculateAvg(traitName, dataPts, dataTraits, traitValues,dataPvalues, dataPoint, type);
        avg=avg*dataPoint;
        Object[] dataValues=getHotPepperYield(traitName, traitAvg, population, avg,dividend,hasZeroValue,hybrid,repl);
        traitAvg = (HashMap<String, Float>) dataValues[0];
        hasZeroValue = (HashMap<String, ArrayList<String>>) dataValues[1];
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("TO") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("TLSSG_70")) {
        traitAvg=calculateTLCV(traitName, traitAvg,dataPoint, dataTraits, hybrid, repl, traitValues, dataPvalues,50);
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("TO") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("TLSSG_100")) {
        traitAvg=calculateTLCV(traitName, traitAvg,dataPoint, dataTraits, hybrid, repl, traitValues, dataPvalues,50);
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("TO") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("YVMV_60")) {
        traitAvg=tomatoYVMVCalculation(traitName, traitAvg,dataPoint, dataTraits, hybrid, repl, traitValues, dataPvalues);
    } else if(cropId.equalsIgnoreCase("TO") && traitName.equalsIgnoreCase("YVMV_90")) {

    There are crops and each crop have traits , traits are actually a mesuremet
    scale to decide growth of a seed of a particular crop.
    This module is to for planters to observe growth of seeds sowed of certain
    crops and take down n no of observation for each trait and upload in csv format.Once they enter
    data i have to either avg out the values or sum the values or sometimes
    there are more complex function that i have to apply it may differe for each
    trait .This is the whole module about.Just to give an idea about how they
    will enter data
    Hyubrid(seed) trait1 trait2 trait3 trait5 trait6..... trait15
    Hybrid1 01 02 03 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 06 08 04 01

    HYbrid2 04 06 08 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 06 08 04 01
    Once they enter data in this format i have to give result something like
    this.
    Here avg colum does not necessaryly mean avg it can be sum or any formula
    based resutl.Hybrid is the seed for which they record the observation.
    I have shown avg column only for two tratis it is actually for all the
    traits.
    Hyubrid(seed) trait1 Avg trait2 avg trait3 trait5 trait6..... trait15
    Hybrid1 01 01 02 04 03 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 04 06 10 08 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 04 06 12 08 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 04 06 14 08 04 01
    HYbrid2 04 04 06 12 08 04 01
    Hope this clarifies atleat a but
    The data are not correctly indented but there is no way i can format it.

  • How can I develop a web application using EJB design pattern?

    I have searched over the web and found quite a lot of tutorials on how to use the EJB design pattern.
    I know that there will be a home interface, EJB object interface and a SessionBean.
    But the tutorials often only cover a single class, this made me unable to get a complete picture of how EJB design pattern can be implemented into a whole system.
    I am now required to devleop an online shopping web application using EJB and JSP page.
    I think I will need to create a lot of classes: Member, ShoppingCart, Product...etc.
    What I want to ask is that, do I need to create a home interface, EJB object interface and a SessionBean for each of these classes?
    I really need some ideas on how to develop this system using EJB + JSP pages.
    Many thanks to you all.

    For every EJB that you want to create, you will need to code a home and remote interface and a bean class.

  • Best architecture and design pattern to use

    I am currently designing a moderately sized LabView application and cannot decide on the best architecture/design pattern or combinations thereof to implement.
    The program basically polls an instrument connected to a serial port continuously at a 2-10Hz rate. When operator clicks a button to start a run, the polled data is then filtered, has math functions performed on the data, writes collected data to files, and produces reltime graphs and calculates point-by-point statistics. At the completion of a run, some additional data files are written. I pretty much know how to accomplish all these tasks.
    What is also required is main-vi front panel interaction by the operator to access a database (via a C# dll with .Net) to query for specifications to apply in order to determine pass/fail status. Setup conditions also need to be changed from time to time by the operator and applied to the data in real time (ie- a measurement offset). I have prototyped the database portion successfully thus far.
    For the main vi, I started off using the Top Level Application Using Events design pattern (Event structure within a while loop). Copious use of bundled clusters and shift registers keep the database data updated. I cannot figure out how to have the top level vi concurrently poll the serial device as outlined above. The Event structure is only active when defined control values change, and use of a timeout is no help since it prevent data from being collected while the user is accessing the database. All database and setup parameters must be applied to the data as it comes in from the serial port. Error trapping/recovery is a must.
    I believe what I need is two parallel processes running under my main vi (one for database and setup, the other for polling and data processing/display, but what would be the preferred choice here?
    Revert back to a polled loop in lieu of Events, use notifiers, occurrences, user-defined events, Producer-consumer loops?
    Its been about 3 years since I have had an application on this level (which used a state machine architecture), and a lot has changed in LabView (using 7.1 Prof Devel). I am currently having a mental block while trying to digest a lot of features I have never used before.
    Suggestions Welcome!
    Thanks.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "It’s the questions that drive us.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I suggest a (3) state machine(s) architecture. The first is the user interface. Your main VI is a good start. Another state machine handles the instrument I/O (your serial polling). The third handles all data processing. The three loops run independently. Each has a wait to allow LV's scheduler to share CPU time among the loops. I like queues or functional globals for inter-loop communications.
    This allows a lot of flexibility. Each portion can be tested alone. Each can have different timing and priority.
    Spend some time thinking about what needs to be done and plan the structure carefully before you do any coding (except for little test programs to try new ideas).
    I also like Conway and Watts "A Software Engineering Approach to LabVIEW", published
    by Prentice Hall.

  • Are there any Client/Server Application (using sockets) design patterns?

    Hi,
    The title of the post nearly says it all. I am searching for different design patterns related with the development of a client/server application. I understand that there must be any different ways on how a client/server application can be developed.
