Designer to Data Modeler - triggers

Hello,
Our client still uses Designer to design it's database model and is considering an upgrade. Since the last version you can import your repository from Designer to Data Modeler. When you start selecting your objects before import, you can't seem to select your triggers.
After the export the triggers are not in the physical model at the table.
Was anyone successful with this feature?

The documentation of Data Modeler indeed says to import triggers (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/datamodelerfaq-167683.html#designer).
I use the import functionality from Designer often, but never the triggers are included. I extract the triggers as plsql modules and do not store them in DM.

To create referential constraints or not while designing a data model...

Hi,
If I were to design a data model involving some tables which tend to grow fast and huge, which option w.r.t creating referential constraints (foreign key constraints) between tables is advisable - to create or not to create?
Assuming that there are no specific requirements to implement referential integrity (though it maybe implicity stated). I know that creating referential constraints might maintain data integrity but on the other hand, it might be a bottleneck in some data-intensive queries/operations involving huge tables.
In other words, what factors should we consider while deciding on to create referential constraints or not in a data model?

Hummm, are you sure ? I'm not convinced that foreign key constraints can cause a bottlenecks while querying the database. Why ? Otherwise, DML statements can be affected by some constraints and indexes ... in some systems for example perform data loading in a Data Warehouse, DSS Systems, etc....

Help me in design of data model for flatfiles

hello Guru's,
my client is implementing FI in ECC still they are in realization. then my client gave me FI flat files and told me to extract those into BI. those flat files consists of profit and loss statements with actuals and budget data and balance sheet statements with actuals and budget in addition to these there are forecast files.
can you tell me what are the questions i have to ask user? and please sugest me some designs

Tks for ur appreciation for me.
In my opinion, you have to understand first regarding the what purposes from the are. Then u learn the relationship among the data; it's purposes is to define dimension / master data.
(You can ask to ur user regarding the data itself: What the relationsionship is in among those data? What's the purposes of data itself? What's the full cycle of that business ?? )
Then u have to define whether it uses ODS / Info Cube. You can decide it by knowing whether the data is detail data / summary. If it's detail you can choose ODS, and Cube for summary one.
I just gave u the highlight point, for the detail u can see on this refrence.

Help me in design of data model for flat files

Hello guru's,
                    my client gave me excel spreadsheets and told to analyze what are the things i have to look into those. and also my manager introduced to one of the finace user . what are the questions i have to ask user regarding those files. the excel spreadsheets contains actual data, budget data and forecast data.
                    one more thing SAP FICO in ECC is in realization phase. my manger told me that you have to map all G/L accounts and Costcenters with R/3 because there excel spreadsheets have different format.
          send me what are all questions i have to ask user? there are no documnets also so can you please tell me what are all documents i have to prepare like func spec or tech spec?

OBIEE Best Practice Data Model/Repository Design for Objectives/Targets

We are faced with a design question that has become somewhat difficult and we need some help. We want to be able to compare side-by-side actual measures with their corresponding objectives/targets. Sounds simple. But, our objectives are static (not able to be aggregated) with multi-dimensionality and multi-levels. We need some best practice tips on how to design our data model and repository properly so that we can see the objective/target for a measure regardless of the dimensions that are used in the criteria and regardless of the level.

- Right now we have quarterly objectives set using 3 different dimensions. So, if an author were to add one or more (or zero) dimensions to their criteria for a given measure they could get back a different objective. They could add Dimension1 and get 99%. They could add Dimension1 and Dimension2 and get 98%. They could add all three dimensions and get 97%. They could add zero dimensions (highest grain) and get 99%. Using our existing structure if we were to add a new dimension to the mix the possible combinations would grow dramatically. (Not flexible)
- We would like our final solution to be flexible enough so that we could view objectives with altogether different dimensions and possibly get different objectives.
- We currently have 3 fact tables with 3+ conformed dimension tables and a few unique dimension tables.
Could anyone share a similar situation where you have implemented a data model structure with the proper repository joins to handle showing side-by-side objectives/targets where the objectives were static and could be displayed at differing levels with flexible dimensions as described?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi..yes this suggestion is nice...first configure the sensors(activity or variable) ..then configure the sensor action as a JMS Topic which will in turn insert the data into a DB..Or when u configure the sensor action as a DB..then the data goes to Oracle Reports schema..if there is any chance of altering the DB..i mean if there is any chance by changing config files so that the data doesnt go to that Reports schema and goes to a custom schema created by any User....i dont know if it can b done...my problem is wen i m configuring the jms Topic for sensor actions..i see blank data coming..for sm reason or the other the data is not getting posted ...i have used a esb ..a routing service based on the schema which i am monitoring...can any1 help?

How to load data and design data model

Hi,
We have data in excel(size is appx. 60 MB) of 24 month, excel has column like Year, Month, Region, Affiliate KPI and their value.
How can we load excel data into dashboard and design the data model?
Please find the attached file for reference.

File is corrupted, you can import the excel into dashboard using import button.
Design you need to come up with your navigation first and what you need to display in dashboard. If possible explain that we can help you better on this.

How to rename a View Link in a data model?

In JDeveloper 9.0.3, I create a simple BC4J project with a master and a detail. The business components are properly created.
When I try to design the data model for the module, I am able to link the view for the master and the view for the detail, there is no problem to rename the view objects that I select in my data model, but I found no way to rename the view links used between the view objects.
I always get an automatically generated name, like "FkForeignDetailLink1". This is what I see in the data model, and also in the structure of the module, in the "View Link Members" section.
I am able to modify the properties of this view link, but not its name. Am I missing something?

to clarify... In the AM wizard, you are trying to rename the instances of view objects and view links?
If so, you are right, there is no way to rename view links on that panel. We are working on a better way to do that for the next release. The only way I know of to rename the view links is to shut jdev down and edit the XML for the application modele. This can be dangerous if you get it wrong, so make a backup before attempting this. The hint with renaming things OUTSIDE JDeveloper, I already know, but I don't like much.
As for the AM wizard, I just noticed that I cannot do it inside. But that's no problem for me, as lots of details cannot be done inside the wizard, but there is a way to customize them afterwards. My real problem is that didn't find ANY way of doing it.
A question for you if I may. Why are you renaming the view link instances? I though most users would use the detail view instance directly. The detail view instance would in turn look up the appropriate view link into, what ever its name was. The only place where I saw the bad view link names displayed in JDev was the Structure pane of the AM, under View Link Members. But there is no way to modify them there. As for the detail view instance, I didn't find a place to get to the view link at design time (in 9.0.3.988).
Could you be more precise, please?

Simple Data Model or Load in BI 7.0

Hi there, please help me this to be clear and firm up the data model.please answer step by step eg 1,2 3,
1. I am trying to load the two purchasing cube 0pur_c01 and 0pur_c02 from the data sources scheline 2lis_02_scl and 2lis_02_ITM and 2lis_02_hdr
2. Now question is that i see confusion here to load and design the data model. please tell how
option 1. create transformation from data source 2lis_02_scl to infosource 2lis_02_scl and then create the transformation from infosource 2lis_02_scl to cube 0pur_c01 and the repeat same thing for other data source
now create IP from DS to load PSA and create the DTP to load the from DS to CUBE
3. nOW I SEE peoploe making transfer structure for IS 2lis_02_scl AND connect to DS 2lis_02_scl and then going to cube and creating UR from IS 2lis_02_scl TO CUBE like in 3.5 WHY THis is needed now in BI 7.0??? if we are going by transformation FROM DS TO IS AND IS TO CUBE AND THEN DO THE DTP
Please clarify the right approach to solve the requiremnt

Migrating SAP BW into Oracle data model

We have a requirement where the exisiting data from SAP BW needs to be migrated into Oracle. Since I do not have any prior SAP BW experience, I wanted to ask the forum on what their thoughts are in converting the data model from SAP BW into Oracle. Would that be straight forward conversion for the fact and dimension tables into Oracle or are there certain things we need keep in mind while designing the data model in Oracle. For ex: indexes, keys, attributes etc if they are handled any differently between the two systems.

ERwin will not give you the functionality to derive the logical data model from SAP BW automatically, however Saphir from Silwood Technology (www.silwoodtechnology.com) does allow you to extract the detailed metadata from the SAP BW system ( as well as from other major standard or customised ERP applications - SAP itself, Oracle, Siebel, Peoplesoft and JD Edwards). Once this information is brought into its own repository, Saphir provides a range of powerful search and view capabilities to allow you to isolate the data you are interested in and then export that information to ERwin (or any other leading Modeling tool).
Saphir will provide you with details of the relationships and detailed definitions within SAP BW.

OBIEE Data Modelling queries

I am trying to create a data model for the OBIEE reporting from a source database.
I have a fact table that looks like the below
Fact-Key Customer_id Facility_id market_value_amt Coll_key Guar_key Derivative_key

In the above fact table for a given fact key i can find the correspondign customer details by using the customer_id by joining it with the customer dimesnion table
I can get the facility details by using the facility_id and joinign it with the facility dimension table.
But the coll_key,guar_key derivative_key are all from different tables.
Any one row in teh fact table will have only oen of the keys coll key or guar_key or derivative key populated.
When a row has a coll key value populated i will use the key to join with the coll_attr tabl to get collateral related values.
If the guar_key table is populated i will use that key and joion with the guar_attr table to get guaranter related details.
The problem with this model is tommorrow if there is another type that is added say equity, then to get th attribute details i will need another column added to the
fact table called equity_key and i will use this key and join with say the equity_attr table to get the values.
Is there any other way to design the data model for these kind of data.

By looking at the data and fact table i can say that you need to have one key in the fact instead of different keys for different types.

Fact-Key Customer_id Facility_id market_value_amt Type_key(example)
1 10 100 10000 300
2 20 100 10000 100
3 30 100 10000 200
All the tables can join using the same key and you wont need to add another column for equity.

SQL Developer with Data Modeler, No Design Menu Option

Using SQL Developer 3.0.04 Build MAIN-04.34 with Data Modeler. I have created a logical design and wish to forward engineer this to a relational model.
I cannot seem to find the Design Menu option to use the >> Engineer to Relational Model option which is available under the Design Menu on the Stand Alone version of SQL Developer Data Modeler.
Have checked the following locations:
Tools -> Data Modeler
View -> Data Modeler
File -> Data Modeler
Right Click on my Logical Design
I have ensure that all my entities have the Engineer To property set to a valid Relational Model.
Is this a bug or am I missing a menu option / configuration setting?

Publish data model with designer

Hi,
so far I used ERwin for data modelling. ERwin can generate HTML output consisting of the graphical data model plus hyperlinks on the tables. If you click on a table a report pops up with all details, e.g. table and column comments.
I find this very useful to publish the data model.
Is there something similar available with Oracle Designer?

If you have any recent release of Designer installed, then you have the ROB automatically installed. Select your Start menu in Windows and then navigate through your menus to the Designer sub menu and you'll see a link for setting up the ROB.
The ROB was made available as part of Designer from March 2003. The lastest release of Designer, viz Designer 10g (9.0.4.4) and the equivalent 9i and 6i releases, all now avialable on OTN, have additional support for the ROB. This offers the ability to save and ERD or Server Model Diagram directly to the ROB.
You do need to add the "hotpost" functionality manually. The ROB help gives a step by step apporach on adding these hotspots. There are a number of demos on the Designer demo page on using the ROB and configuring the App Server to use it. http://otn.oracle.com/products/designer/demos.htm

Generation of DDL similar to Oracle Designer (Data Modeler 3.0 EA1.)

Hi,
Will the production version of SQL Data Modeler allow the creation of separate DDL files similar to that which Oracle Designer does? For example, I can create a sequence number generator in Data Modeler (DM) and then make a call to that in an Object Type method. However the DDL file that is generated by DM has all DDL in one file. This would allow to take dependencies were taken into consideration, that is create the sequences before object types, packages and tables, then object type bodies, package bodies, etc...

At this stage we do not support multiple files. We do plan to do this in the future. However you can work around this by repeating the DDL generation for the different objects types you want to have files for.
