Designing Objects for a Warehouse

While building tables (Dimensional & Staging tables), i added some additional 10 FLEX_FIELDS in every table for future use without altering the tables.
Is it a Good Practise in Warehouse environment to have additional flex columns?
Any thoughts?
Thanks in Advance

I don't add columns that aren't required for delivering the solution. I do make occasional exceptions for a staging/backroom table. Additional unused (or poorly named) columns are confusing.
When you begin to use these flex columns, will you rename the columns? Would it be just as easy to add new columns as needed?

  • Data Access Object for Data Warehouse?

    Hi,
Does anyone know how the DAO pattern looks like when it is used for a data warehouse rather than a normal transactional database?
Normally we have something like CustomerDAO or ProductDAO in the DAO pattern, but for data warehouse applications, JOINs are used and multiple tables are queried, for example, a query may contains data from the Customer, Product and Time table, what should the DAO class be named? CustomerProductTimeDAO?? Any difference in other parts of the pattern?
    Thanks in advance.
    SK

In my opinion, there are no differences in the Data Access Object design pattern which have any thing to do with any characteristic of its implementation or the storage format of the data the pattern is designed to function with.
The core pupose of the DAO design pattern is to encapsulate data access code and separate it from the business logic code of the application. A DAO implementation might vary from application to application. The design pattern does not specify any implementation details. A DAO implementation can be applied to group of XML data files, an Excel-based CSV file, a relational database, or an OS file system. The design is the same for all these, it is the implementation that varies.
The core difference between an operational database and a strategic data warehouse is the purpose of why and how the data is used. It is not so much a technical difference. The relational design may vary however, there may be more tables amd ternary relationships in a data warehouse to support more fine-tuned queries; there may be less tables in a operational database to support insert/add efficiencies.
The DAO implementation for a data warehouse would be based on the model of the databases. However the tables are set up, that is how the DAO is coded.

  • Flex design pattern for BlazeDS transfer objects

    Dear Community,
I have a question regarding the nature of objects transferd from BlazeDS backend to the Flex client.
According to some adobe docs all the presentation logic should be in flex and BlazeDS should provide only services.
The question is what kind of transfer objects should be used? with what level of abstraction?
To make it more clear let's talk about a simple forum application like adobe forums.
I have created a Forum service, which returns a Forum transfer object, which has a List of Threads, with each thread having a List of Messages.
Flex gets the Forum transfer object and does all the presentaiton work.
This is a very nice seperatin of concerns architecture BUT there are two major performance issues:
    - when the forum becomes bigger the transfer object will be huge
    - the flex will use huge client resources to create the presentation of the forum transfer object.
So my question is what is your strategy/ design pattern for such a problem.
An obvious answer would be create services that include the presentation logic and use transfor objects like ThreadListPage which will include only the first 10 threads.
    Thanks in advance

I think you are going to get a few varied types of answers to a general question like this, but I will comment on a few things.  First, you should only be transmitting the data that you need to use or display to the user at the time.  If this forum was implemented in Flex (I wish) you wouldn't transfer the text for all the threads.  You might not transfer the thread text at all (just the subjects), you'd make calls back to the server to fetch that data when and if you need it.
Also, I think you are overestimating the resources required for the Flex "presentation layer".  If you think about it, these workstations we have here are pretty idle most of the time when you're at a website.  Nowadays there's plenty of processing power just sitting there waiting, so as long as your design isn't flawed the CPU or memory are rarely going to be a bottleneck with Flex.
The way I design, BlazeDS (or GraniteDS etc) should mostly just be "serving data".  There is some flexibility available, for example I don't see a problem with putting certain types of business rules (such as a limit on the number of results that can be recieved in a search) within server side code, and validation rules on the Flex side.  So there's not too many "industry standards" in Flex yet beyond maybe what's done in the various standard architectures, at least not that I'm aware of.
You might find it beneficial to look into some of the various frameworks/architectures available like Cairngorm, Mate, Swiz, and so on.  Learning how they work (looking at examples) would probably answer some of your questions too.

  • What is the best design pattern for this problem?

No code to go with the question. I am trying to settle on the best design pattern for the problem before I code. I want to use an Object Oriented approach.
I have included a basic UML diagram of what I was thinking so far.
Stated simply, I have three devices; Module, Wired Modem, and Wireless Modem.
In the Device Under Test parent class, I have put the attributes that are variable from device to device, but common to all of them.
In the child classes, I have put the attributes that are not variable to each copy of that device. The attributes are common across device types. I was planning to use controls in the class definition that have the data set to a default value, since it doesn't change for each serial number of that device. For example, a Module will always have a Device Type ID of 1. These values are used to query the database.
    An example query would be [DHR].[GetDeviceActiveVersions] '39288', 1, '4/26/2012 12:18:52 PM'
The '1' is the device type ID, the 39288 is the serial number, and the return would be "A000" or "S002", for example.
So, I would be pulling the Serial Number and Device Type ID from the Device Under Test parent and child, and passing them to the Database using a SQL string stored in the control of the Active Versions child class of Database.
The overall idea is that the same data is used to send multiple queries to the database and receiving back various data that I then evaluate for pass of fail, and for date order.
What I can't settle on is the approach. Should it be a Strategy pattern, A Chain of Command pattern, a Decorator pattern or something else.
    Ideas?

Good. At least you will not be smaking with a OPPer dOOPer hammer if I make some gramatical mistake.
You may want to look at this thread in the BreakPoint where i trie to help Cory get a handle on Dynamic Dispatching with an example of two classes that inherit from a common parent and invoke Over-ride VIs to do the same thing but with wildly varying results.
The example uses a Class of "Numeric"  and a sibling class "Text" and the both implement an Add method.
It is dirt simple and Cory did a decent job of explaining it.

Well Erland, either you calm down your manager (with a martini?) or use NO CACHE.
QUOTE: "This could cause a sequence to run out of numbers much more quickly than an IDENTITY value. It could also cause managers to become upset that values are missing, in which case they’ll need to simply get over it and accept that
    there will be numbers missing.
If you need SQL Server to use every possible value, configure a cache setting of NO CACHE. This will cause the sequence to work much like the IDENTITY property. However, it will impact the sequence performance due to the additional metadata writes."

  • Creating Multiple Resource Objects for OOTB Connectors

    All,
I am trying to create a second AD User resource object for the OOTB connector. I would like to think that the AD Connector (and all connectors, for that matter) was designed to handle the creation of multiple Resource Objects for the same Resource Types, but am I wrong? It doesn't seem like the OIM Connector can handle this easily.
Has anyone created multiple resource objects for a connector? Is this a fairly simple task, or will it require a large effort? Is it even possible? Any pointers?
    Thanks!

I will provide a little help with the duplication. I found the best way to do it is to import the original connector. Go through the different pieces making each one have a unique name, that is not part of any of the other piece names. You need to have unique names for the following:
    1. Resource Object
    2. Process Definition - Provisioning
    3. IT Resource
    4. Form - Process
    5. Scheduled Task
After you import the connector, rename each of the following to something unique. I would also update your process form to have a default value of your IT Resource, as well as your scheduled task values to point to the new unique names. Export the 5 items, no dependecies. The adapters will all be the same. Use find and replace for the values and then import the new XML. If it works, duplicate the XML for each of the new workflows you want to create.

  • XI 3.0 : Import/Export of IB: Design Objects via Filesystem

<b>Failure: "You are not permitted to delete any objects since the software component cannot be changed"</b>
Today I've tried out the import/export functionality of the integration builder design.
Therefor I've exported a whole <i>SoftwareComponentVersion</i> into a file and after that reimported it.
Everything works fully correct. But now, when i try to delete this <i>SoftwarComponentVersion</i> or any <i>object</i> within, i face the warning: "You are not permitted to delete any objects since the software component cannot be changed" and i am not able to delete it.
<b>Have you any experience dealing this problem?</b>
    <u>Thx for your answer!</u>

    Hi Friends,
I have try to do the same stuff but i could not see the objects imported into swcv.
    I did as follows:
    1. Imported swcv from sld.
    2. created a namespace
    4. created some design objects.
    5. activated the changed list.
    6. Exported the swcv in tpz file
    7. removed all the objects from swcv.
    8. imported the design objects from previously exported tpz file by copying it into the import folder at xiserver.
    9. it says objects are successfully imported and i can see the file is transfered from import folder to importedFiles folder with timestamp suffix.
but i am still unable to see these objects into the swcv.
Where i have done mistake or should i need to do something more as i wanted to test this export/import feature having only one xiserver.

  • The best AP for large warehouse deployment ?

    Hi,
    Hope you peeps can assist.
New design / installation at a warehouse....
What is the best / recommended AP for a warehouse with shelving 10m high and 1.8m appart  and a ceiling at about 11.5m? Warehouse is 129m x 97m, about  60% of the floor will be shelving and the rest offices with a ceiling of 3m.
My concern is the area where the shelving will be utilized and scanners to be used for stock control. The goods on the shelves will differ from plastics to metal in wooden crates and normal boxes.
Thank you in advance for your advice and recommendation. Please also state whether you recommend internal or external antennae.
    David

That is hard to tell you exactly what you need to do, but for that height, I would use an external antenna, the office if fine with internal.  I would use either the 3702e or 2702e for the install.  Most of my clients in the manufacturing/distribution has gone with the 3702e's.

  • Design suggestion for application-wide configuration properties

    Hello all
I am seeking opinions on how to design an application in which multiple classes have access to a common set of configuration properties that may change at runtime.
Until now, I would create an abstract class dedicated to initializing the properties set and enabling access to them from anywhere in the application through appropriate get/set static methods (most probably using an internal java.util.Properties object). Lately, my confidence in that approach seems to diminish.
So, I thought I should ask... do you see any issues with the above approach? Would you suggest any alternatives?
What I am essentially looking for here is a best practice to stick with from now on.
    Thanks in advance
    G

Or what happens if you have a plugin architecture and someone changes the root plugin directory to another directory. On the other hand, the maximum draw distance in a virtual world, an application's "skin", or a filesharing client's bandwidth limit are, in my view, properties that may very well need to change at runtime.
Seems reasonable to me. That is the easy part. The hard part is
    1. How/when do you reload
    2. How do you code your app so it gets the new values and uses themAs for 1, apologies if I haven't explained correctly: I am talking about properties that may change programmatically at runtime, e.g., by a user through a configuration dialog. Ok.
I can think of at least one way to deal with 2 (classes interested in all or a few of the properties implement some property listener interface and accordingly re-get values when notified about changes). That is how you detect it. It has nothing to do with whether the current running process is in a state that allows changes to be made.
all over the code reflects a wise design decision vs using a singleton property manager, references to a single property manager object (maybe even a java.util.Properties object) passed around through constructors, approaches involving dependency injection (not relying on any framework though), or else.Depends on the application. For example with a distributed system propogating the changes correctly so systems are not out of sync can be problematic.
Depends on the context in which your user makes changes. If it is an admin then it has the same context has if you were using a file. In that case I would use a singleton.
If it is a user changing part of the system, then you can't use a singleton. In that case you would need a context object from which other code derives the configuration values it uses. That is a one layer hierarchy and of course more levels require more complexity via a context object for each level.

  • What is the location for the swatches file in the illustrator product part of Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium for windows (date and lenght)? File that manges its funcionallity.  Thanks

As per adobe agent chat representative, the following question is posted on the fórum to obtain an answe from adobe.
What is the location for the swatches file in the illustrator product part of Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium for windows (date and lenght)? File that manges its funcionallity.
    Thanks
    <moved from downloading,installing,setting up - kglad>

Illustrator is not working as it should...
I want them to compare the original size and date of creation with what I have installed on my computer... I have installed several times with my original CD and I tried once downloading the files from the adobe site (using my own license). I suspect the files has been modified or renamed on my laptop by an external unauthorized user causing the malfunction of the application.
Customer services does not support CS3 anymore and the updates / patches in the adobe site does not solve the problem... They redirect me to the forums for support...
Presently, my problem is that after creating a swatch and drag it to the swatch panel, it does not fill as it should a new form... Now, after deactivating and activating my license the swatch seems to fill the new form but when the filter that the swatch has is persistence in the next filling object created even though a different color is being used as a fill (X)... Help in the creation of a swatch over the internet just complicate the issue.
That's why I would like to know whether updates on my product are being received or files are being replaced without my knowledge...
    Thanks...
PS Do you know how to contact a staff adobe employer on the forums?
