Desktop application-components

Dear all,
How can I create a desktop icon upon whose double click, a login screen like gtalk appears.
I want this login screen to communicate with Tomcat server. So which would be the best Java component that I should adopt. Kindly help.
If there is any working demo/ sample code of the same, please provide the link also,if possible.
Thanks in advance for all the valuble suggestions and help.
Regards,
Anees

Are giving away dukes on vague answers? If so, use swing:
use a JFrame (see GridLayout or GridBagLayout for component disposition),
some (I guess two) JLabels, one JTextField for username and one JPasswordField for password,
one JButton for the actual action.
Use HttpURLConnection to communicate with Tomcat
Create the icon as a .bat or .sh if it is for your PC only, or do a Java Web Start application if you have to distribute it.
I do not think you will get better hints, but you can try giving me dukes, 2 can suffice, and see if anyone follows for the other 8.
Bye.
P.S.: why don't you use an HTML page?

  • Populating dynamic components in a remotely connected desktop application

    Hii Javaties
I develping a desktop appliaction, which will remotely connect to internet.
My requiremnets for the project are
1)- Combo boxes, lists are dynamic(they need 2 be populated from databse).Since user will not be always connected to internet , so i need to devise some other way 2 do this .
the solution tht i m thinking upon is tht , the comboboxes ,lists will be populated fom XML file tht will be stored in user P.C(rather tht this file will be in jar file of the desktop application).
So now whenever user has access to net, then he can click on a menu
button (UPDATE FILES), so tht he can get the latest copy from the central server .
In the central server , the data will be stored in an RDBMS , and this data will be sent 2 the application on client computer as an XML file.
and this will rewrite the (XML)files , tht the appliaction needs for poplulating Combo boxes and lists.
2)User needs to transmit data back to central server remotely.
I plan to use XML for this.
    Now My questions are -------
    1) Is this approach Correct ?
    2) if the data is large , is it wise to store it as an XML file
    3) How 2 go abt it.
If anythng is not clear , plz tell me ?
U can also click on the link below to see the original question posted by me
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=734442

I don't understand why you need xml for jcombobox content? A flat file for each combobox will serve its purpose quite well.the contents of combo boxes will be fetched , from a repository (XML) file, which will contain data from database.
This repository can be aslo updated by connecting to server, and updating it with new data from database.
If u still have dobt do tell me .?

  • How to add a CSV file to a desktop application and access it?

I'm writing a desktop application for looking up phone numbers (this numbers are stored in a .CSV file). Where should I put the file in the project and how to access it? I intend to put it in the project and open it in a buffered reader!

The best place to put application data is probably user.home, as described in the [Store Application Settings and Components|http://sdnshare.sun.com/view.jsp?id=2305] post at SDNShare.
If those listings are still messed up, try these alternate renderings of [AppStore.java|http://pscode.org/fmt/sbx.html?url=/test%2FAppStore.java&col=2&fnt=2&tab=2&ln=0] & [AppStoreDemo.java|http://pscode.org/fmt/sbx.html?url=/test%2FAppStoreDemo.java&col=2&fnt=2&tab=2&ln=0].

  • Google-Suggest in Swing Desktop Application - Possible?

    Hi All,
I am building my first Java Swing Application. Apologies in advance for any stupid questions I ask w.r.t. Java Swing concepts.
I am building a Billing Desktop Application using Java Swing. My backend is a Microsoft Excel. My clarification are:
*1. I have a set of values in a combo box listed below a jTextField. The values have to be displayed on the Screen as and when the user gives some characters as input. In short, something like a google-suggest functionality.*
*2. Generate pre-defined set of jLabels and jTextFields on the click on a jButton*
If this is too much to achieve with Java Swing, I would highly appreciate if you can share any other means to achieve this.
    Thanks,

  • Java or C++ for desktop applications

    Help needed!
We are a team of 5 programmers in a state agency who deal with federal contracts. About 70% of the applications we build are desktop applications. One of the team members strongly believes that learning C++ instead of Java would strengthen our positions. He strongly believes that Java is not cut out for desktop applications and Java is ideal only for web applications. None of us are very familiar with C++ and so we are intending to take classes in C++. (We are all Visual Foxpro, VB group currently). I have one year of programming with Java (web applications) I still don't want to give up on Java that easily. Well my question is - Is that member in the team right in saying that Java is for web and not for desk top. Can any expert give me a good comparison and so we can move on the right track.
Thanks for the help in advance!
    suman

Java can work fine for a desktop application, don't listen to him. Here's what you've got to consider:
    1. Tool set: One strength of java is its strong set of standardized tools. You can probably find great sets of C++ tools too, though, but this is a major factor.
    2. Speed of development: This depends somewhat on the strength and maturity of the toolset you are using, but in general, I think that java is faster to develop for 3 reasons: (1) because it smoothes over some of the inconsistancies between systems - you don't have to get as involved in the gritty details. (2) Java can often tell you exactly what line number your program is bombing, and in every case, it will give you a specific message about what kind of error you had (nullpointer, array out of bounds, etc vs 'Syntax Error') (3) Garbage collection
    3. Familiarity with language: Obviously if you've got to learn something new, that takes time.
    4. App performance: Java is probably going to be bigger, in terms of what has to be installed on the machine in order to run your app, and marginally slower than C++. It will almost certainly require a lot more memory to run well. Before you freak out about it being slower than C++ though, you should consider what kind of performance your app needs. If it's doing 3D rendering, C++ is probably going to be better. If most of it is UI components, and the back end processing is not that intensive, Java could be what you want

  • Developing desktop applications for windows

    Hello
I am currently doing a final year project which is an encryption software for the company that i did my placement with. i have done the core part of the program but i need to know how to make it look professional. i need to be able to have it as an installable desktop application (Only for Windows), with an icon provided by me which is used when files are encrypted using the application. i have no idea how to achieve this effect and i seek knowledge.
thanks in advance for your help

There are many levels of professional software in my opinion. There is software that works, meets the requirements and doesn't crash. That's professional in the sense that it does what it is supposed to and does it well. People pay for that even if its green-screen non-GUI based. TONS of stuff still working/written for non-GUI environments and plenty pay for it.
When related to Java and desktop applications, I feel there is only truly one real way to brag you have written a professional software suite. That is when your application not only adheres to what it should do, but provides a means to extend it without having to wait for major releases, and the UI is VERY consistent, not cluttered, not tons of buttons/menus/dialogs/windows all over the place and the underlying coce of the app is truly written well to make good use of areas of Java such as resources (properly closing files when not using them, returning DB connections when done, using WeakReference of nulling out refs to objects no longer needed). It is very very easy to cause a memory leak in a java application if you do not watch at all times for object refs that are left hanging.
By extensibility, I mean providing some means of plugging in new pieces of code to enhance the product or fix existing issues (bugs) and providing a simple update facility that can either auto-update, or allow an install to add the update.
It is exactly these reasons that keep me plugging away on my plugin engine (www.sourceforge.net/projects/genpluginengine) and UI framework built around plugins. While the engine is almost done and is very similar to the Eclipse plugin engine, the UI framework will be ongoing for some time. Making a very professional read-to-run-out-of-the-box free/open-source framework built on high-quality well tested plugins is not easy to accomplish with a couple hours a week and only me and one other doing it. I would love to get more help shortly, adding tons of great features that all developers could benefit from, and soon I will start asking various java boards for help, see if anyone is interested in contributing. The goal is a professional looking, solid underlying code, well/highly tested UI framework that can be used by anyone to quickly build their specifics and not worry about the more common UI application stuff such as file i/o choosers, help, preferences, authentication, access levels/rights, views and editors, and more. With a 3rd project working to add tons of Swing UI components, the final UI framework will provide a number of high-quality components like rounded/shaded/gradient filled panels with shadowing, calendar/date pickers, wizards, and more, again all highly tested to ensure ultimate quality.
If you are interested, feel free to post back to this response with email, or join up at the above mentioned sourceforge project and start contributing to the mail list.

  • Industry Standard - Desktop Application GUI

How can i make my desktop application's GUI look the same on different screen resolutions. Would it require me to change the screen resolution when the app is loaded (it is being deployed from JWS)? Or is there a better way? Im not too keen on changing the screen resolution (if its possible) because some screens change shape and all kinda weird things haha
Question is what is the most commonly used method of making the GUI layout appear similar in different resolutions?
    Thanks in advance, Nick!

Otherwise, sure use the IDE if it saves you time. It wouldnt hurt to learn some basic GUI skills though.++
I like Netbeans' gui editor. It's just like any other IDE feature, it saves you time by doing the routine things for you. Creating a new JFrame is like using a boilerplate template for a class, dragging components around is like refactoring your code. And just like any other feature, if you don't understand the code underneath the editor, it's much less useful. I've never created any gui with it (at least any that was worth mentioning) that didn't require tweaking of the code after the editor's work was done.

  • JavaFx Script for Development of Enterprise Desktop Applications?

    Hi,
we are currentlich developing a rather complex business application using Swing. Now the JavaFx stuff seems to get up to speed and we are thinking about changing to build the Gui based on JavaFX.
The enterprise frontend would be a more or less full-screen application, with many masks to enter data into. The backend is a glassfish bean architecture based on WebServices.
Is it now the time to go that way? I dont see any usable design applications to integrate many Swing components - and JavaFx Components seems not existing to support all that listbox, treeviews, keyboard focusing stuff I need here...
I am not very happy about coding all the dialoges per hand as it seems to be the way now...
What do you guys suggest? Skip it for now? Or go the hard way as an early adoptor to find all the bugs and problems we somehow managed to get working already in Swing?
    Regards

    Hi,
I've been trying to write a new desktop application using JavaFX and its pretty tough going with what's available in the API at the moment. The 1.0 release is obviously focused more on RIA, which is perfectly understandable considering the market space they are trying to enter and the fact that if you want to write a desktop application you can always use Swing. I think right now it would be suicide to recommend to your employers that you switch to JavaFX.
The main problem is that JavaFX does not currently have all the standard components you would expect to be able to choose from in order to capture and display data. However, there is always the option of taking whatever Swing component you want to use (e.g. JTree) and wrapping it in the JavaFX SwingComponent class. There are some good examples of how to do that on this wiki page: [http://jfx.wikia.com/wiki/SwingComponents] . But my feeling is, if you're going to build your application out of Swing components wrapped in JavaFX classes then you might as well just write the application in Swing.
I think that right now its too early for JavaFX enterprise desktops but I do believe that one day they will supersede Swing. JavaFX has so much potential. It will eventually be able to do everything Swing can do and then so much more. And I think Sun will have to start focusing on the desktop market quite soon. They are competing with Flex in the RIA space but Flex has good support for data tables etc and I see a lot of projects going with Flex when they might have otherwise gone with Swing.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

what is the best approach to have the same app on mobile.
Should i have at have another app on Jquery Mobile.
    Thanks,
    Bala

    Hi Bala,
Do you want to create Jquery Mobile application UI within your desktop application??
Yes means, follow the below steps,
Go to Shared Components-> Under the User Interface section-> Select User Interface Attribute.
Under the User Interface section-> Click on Add User Interface button to create Jquery mobile UI.
Then You have to create a navigation bar to switch over from desktop to Jquery mobile UI.
You can refer sample application which is using both Desktop and Jquery mobile UI.

  • Error Installing Adobe Air from Story Desktop Application Installer

This is truly driving me nuts already.
Every time I try to install the Desktop Application from the Story website, it says I must install Adobe Air. So I click Install, it shows the progress bar to 100%, then errors out with a window. The window header reads "Adobe AIR Installer" and the main section of the window reads "Couldn't write the application to the hard disk. Please verify the hard disk is available and try again." - There is a Retry and Cancel. Retry does it all again with same results.
No, I had no previous versions of Adobe Air. So I tried installing AIR direct from the Adobe website, and it installs fine. So I go back to the Story webpage and try installing the Desktop Application again and the exact same set of events as described above happens. I uninstalled the AIR install, tried again, same result.
I had Production Premium CS3 previously, and installed Production Premium CS5 UPGRADE. All the programs in the suite work like a charm!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with 208 Gig free on my C drive, as well as over 500 gig free spread out over two other drives. 8 Gig memory, and two Nvidia Qadro FX 3500 video cards (If that matters at all). Full admin rights to the PC, not limited in any way.
A quick Google search shows plenty of other people having the same problem,  just no known fixes I've found!
