Desktop profiles, deploying new services, and existing users

On our development box, I have one user, uid=mcoarr, that was created soon after the portal server was installed. So I started deploying services to this organization and they were not being made visible to the user's desktop. More explicitly, I was defining a channel, and then adding that channel to the available and selected list for the MyFrontPageTabPanelContainer.
So then I created a new user, uid=mattcoarr2. Immediately that user saw the appropriate services on the desktop (that is, the new channel that was defined).
Upon making additional changes to the desktop (adding more channels), uid=mattcoarr2 picks those changes up, but uid=mcoarr does not see any modifications.
Anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening?

Ok, if you want all the details. . .
We have have the root organization, o=mitre.org, and we also have a suborganization o=yahoo,o=mitre.org. Ldap authentication is only setup on the yahoo suborganization. Membership authentication is setup on both orgs.
Here's where I think the user profiles actually reside:
* uid=mcoarr,ou=People,o=mitre.org
(I'm not really sure how the mcoarr user account is being mapped to by ldap authentication configured under the yahoo suborganization)
* uid=mattcoarr,ou=People,o=mitre.org
* uid=mattcoarr2,ou=People,o=yahoo,o=mitre.org
For the yahoo suborganization, looking at Authentication | Core, there is an attribute called "People Container for All Users". My understanding of this is that the user is authenticated by any of the various authentication mechanisms (ldap or membership in my case), and then the user's profile is looked up from this location. For the yahoo suborganization, the value of "People Container for All Users" is "ou=People,o=yahoo,o=mitre.org".
BTW, I am logging into the yahoo suborganization and to the base organization with the following urls:

Brand new MBP and the user directory is corrupt?

hi, i just installd my new MBP and did a sync of my G5 settings (all except bookmarks) added a few things to my desktop and when i rebooted the desktop was cleared and the home directory was missing "Movies" "Music" "Pictures" in the left most column. all that is left is "Applications" and my user home symbol.
i tried to create a new user and when i did so was given a message that the "home" folder could not be located. weird.
anyway. i also installed a canon IP4300 driver. can anyone tell me what may be going on? do i need to erase the drive and do a fresh install?
UPDATE: i see what happened! the User directory somehow got into the Applications folder! no idea how. but i can't seem to get it out. can anyone help me out?

Open the Applications folder and drag the Users folder inside to the top level of the hard disk; you may need to press the Command key when dragging the item and/or provide an administrator username and password. When done, log out and back in. If only the home folder is present in the Applications folder, move it to the Users folder. Rename existing items as needed.

New Service and misinformation

I called several weeks ago to establish Verizon triple play for the first time. The representative assured me that I could seemlessly keep my landline number. The tech came out and did a great job setting everything up. However, my daughter couldn't reach us on our landline line. I realized it wasn't taking incoming calls. I called Verizon to discover that the rep that set up our install never requested our landline # and Verizon had provided us with a new #. If I want to go back to our original landline #, Verizon will charge us $22 (never was told about a charge) and there will be several days before it can be accomplished. The representative that I spoke to today was very abrasive and said that was all she could offer me. Said all supervisors were in a meeting but I could wait on hold for 60-90 minutes at least. I waited over 45 before I told her that I would call back. (Employee ID Z605181/Katie) It is shocking to me that Verizon made a mistake and now I am being penalized. While that original representative clearly dropped the ball, Verizon could have offered to waive the fee or to offer me a free service or gift card or something to compensate me for the delay and unknown charges. Unfortunately, this second representative didn't seem to care about me as a customer. When I told her that I was nervous about Verizon's customer service after these two phone experiences, she didn't seem to care...said I have 30 days to decide if I want to cancel my service and return to my previous provider. It is unfortunate that she only wanted to get me off the phone and did nothing to make me excited about my transfer to Verizon today.

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Please go to your profile page for the forum, and look in the middle, right at the top where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". is possible configure the security policies (profiles), i mean password length, history, failed login attempts for SYS and SYSTEM users in oracle 10g.
What will happen if both users blocked ?? the service would be affected ???

New MBP and existing network

Hello All,
I've just migrated from a G4 PB 1.5 to a new MBP and, while I can log into the existing WiFi, I can't see any of the other nodes on the network. I have my wife's MP Black and a Mini acting as a HTPC/Server. I just migrated through using the assistant and didn't change any of the settings yet.
The Mini is sitting headless downstairs so I used to log in remotely using Chicken of the Sea VNC. Now it no longer is visible, nor do the computers show up via network.
It's been a while since I set this network up and I know that 10.4.8 has altered some of the security. What do I need to tweak??

A router separates two LAN networks and creates two broadcast domains. The standard Microsoft workgroup browsing will only list what is inside your LAN and never something outside or across a router.
If you want to access what is on the other side you must manually enter the share with its IP address. If the computer you want to access has IP address 192.168.100.12 then you enter \\192.168.100.10\share.
But as you want to be able to share freely inside your LAN anyway, I would suggest you set up the WRT as wireless simple access point. That way, you only have a single LAN and a single broadcast domain and thus you can find all other computers if you check for other workgroup computers. Instructions how to set it up as access point are here.

New database for existing user?

am I right saying that a new schema in Oracle involves a new user to create?
Say I've got my user already and I just want to create a new schema for this user.
How can I do it?

In my understanding this means that if I wanna create two databases (collection of tables), which are called 'schemas' in Oracle I also have to create 2 database users.Yes. But these will be logical database schemas. Not end user schemas. For example, you can create a HR schema for a Human Resources database. You can create a MARKETING schema for the Marketing database. (yes, you will use the CREATE USER command to create these 2 logical database schemas - and you would use the same command to create a user schema, developer schema, or any other type of schema)
The HR schema can be specifically setup for the HR database requirements. A space quota of 10Gb. The ability to create tables and stored procedures and views.
Likewise, the MARKETING schema can be setup specifically for marketing. They may need a 50Gb space quota. This database may use object relational features and also need the rights to the SQL advance data types. Etc.
If you want to use the HR database, you can logon as the HR schema. If you want to use the marketing database, you can logon as the MARKETING schema.
Or you can create a user schema - and for this schema user to select tables from the HR database, the HR schema needs to grant specific rights (like select, update, delete and insert) to the user schema on those tables.
Do not let this confuse you. A schema can be many different things, depending on WHAT it can do and HOW it is used. And both these you determine when creating the schema and its rights and its contents (if any).

Deploying new portal and its effect on the old desktop

I have an application which has few .portal files which are then converted to desktop in production through admin portal.
Now i changed my source code and create a new ear file and deploy it in the prod environment.
1) What will be the effect of the new deployment and changed codebase for the underlying .portal file on the old desktop created.
2) Do i need to create the desktop again everytime i deploy a new update ear file?
3) what if i dont update?
Any documentation pointing the specific exact anwers to above questions.

When you say changed code base do you mean you have added /removed books /pages? If so these wont be picked up by the deploy
1) None , deployment does not affect the desktop created.
2)No , you only need to modify the desktop if you want your changes to be picked or if you want to make changes manually.
However your best bet is to use propagation to make the changes

even if you create a new desktop based on a .portal which has changed , then you are prompted what you want to do, and you can decide accordingly (e.g. choosing replace affects the already created desktop)

Its easier to test out the changes on a staging server and propagate the changes once your sure everything works. Note that so far propagation has never worked correctly all the time so backup everything (including the embedded LDAP)

Desktop view from new FCP 5.1 user

New user, Mac Pro, first Mac. FCP desktop view in disarray. No timeline present, Canvas and Tool Bench greyed out and missing. Tried to fix with window/arrange/standard. No luck. It worked properly when I first used it. FCP tuitorial lessons coming next week. Any advice on how to rearrange into standard window?

Well, your last post said that you didn't even have the timeline so you're getting there.
In the browser window, you should have a list of captured clips and any sequences you've created. If you have a timeline open, then there must be a sequence icon in the browser. The icon looks like a small blue and yellow square. (The timeline is a sequence)
If you have a timeline open and still don't see the canvas. Go to the window menu and select it or drop a clip in the timeline and the canvas should appear.
PS. Might be time to get out the manuals for a late night read.

Generate Quota for New Hire and existing employee

I need your help/suggestion in the enclosed issue.
The scenrio is that an emaployee (exisiting) is entitled for all the absence quota at the beginning of a year(i,e, on a calendar year).I am using TM04
However,the employees who join in the mid of the year should get absence quota on a pro-rated basis.
For example: If an employee(exisiting) is entitled for 12 days of Annual Leave in a calendar year.
If a new employee joins the company in the month of Feb.He/she should get on a pro-rated basis i.e. he/she is eligible for 11 days of Annual Leave in all.
I tried few changes in t559l table and set the base entitlement to accural period,in selection rule the accural period is Daily,in accural entitlement it is checked on pro-rated basis,but this doesn't help.
If you have a PCR/schema for this please share.
Please suggest.

This knowledge base article is the AppleID Faq...I recently changed my AppleID password, not the ID iteself, and the passward was synced across all devices.
You cannot consolidate AppleIDs so you have to just establish one that will be used for all activities. And keep in mind, app purchases are tied to the AppleID used for the purchase so updates have to be made using that ID.

Understanding Workspaces, Deploying new Apps and Upgrades

I'm learning Oracle Apex, and finished some OBEs about it. I'm very excited about the platform, and liking very much. But a lot of questions come to my mind.
If I understood it, a Workspace, is a "place" to develop some apps, and encapsule it, and from this workspace, I can export an app to deploy on another server, but, I don't see any options about what tables need to be exported.
In one workspace/schema, I can have more than one app, and I don't see where you define wich tables belongs to each app.
I don't see either, how an upgrade works. If I have deployed an app on a customer, and I need to upgrade it, upgrade of the database, without losing data is automatically?
Another thing I don't understad very well, is about runtime installation.

If you change the structure of your database objects with your application upgrade then you need to upgrade the database objects in order for the application to work. Whatever application features depend on the database changes will not work.
Another thing I don't understad very well, is about runtime installation.Runtime installation basically does not allow any editing of the application definition once it's installed. You need to keep an independent location where you do your application development/modification. Deploying to a runtime application is not reversible, meaning you can't change it to an editable application once you've set it as runtime only.
