Determine date from string

Hi, I have an application that reads in information files in text format. Each line is made up of some character delimited fields and one of these fields is a date field. This information files come from can come from many different sources and can have different formats, ie the columns in different orders and the date in different formats. The file will always be the same from a particular source so I wrote a utility into my program that you can run which lets to create a defintion file mapping the column in the file to the appropriate field, so when you import you just choose the right definition and it reads everything correctly. The problem is with the date. It can possibly come in many different formats. Is there any way to determine the date from a string if you are unsure of the format when it is accessed? So if "2004-04-15" was brought in as a string the applicaiton would know that this is year 2004, march 15. I know you can use SimpleDateFormat to parse strings into dates but it requires you to know the format first. My question is just how can I figure out this format, or at least have a nice clean way for the user to define a custom date format when they are creating a definition for their information file. Any help is appreciated.

from Europe, for instance, and you get "04.04.2004" - what date is that?I know that one! That's the fourth of April! ;-)I can't believe I did that.Don't try to get me started on all my little bloopers ;-)
Friends of mine, one from the Czech Republic and one from the US, got married Aug 8th just so the
short date would make sense to all interested parties.Fourteen years ago, people overhere (Netherlands) wanted to get married thirtyfour minutes and
sixtyfive seconds past noon on the seventh of August in nineteenninety. It would make up for a nice
12:34:56 7/8/90
I meant 04.08.2004 - that's what I meant, you see.I know, sorry for the silly joke.
kind regards,
Jos

  • Extract date from string in T-SQL

    Hi,
I am having one field(AT_TEXT) in my database that has below kind of values. I want to extract date from this string but the issue is all rows has different format.
1)One Month Lttr sent on 3/12/2009 due to
2)One Month Letter sent on 1/15/2009 due to
3)One Month letter sent on7/15/2011.The amount due             - This has no space between on and 7 and . after yr
4)One Month letter sent on 7/16/12 due to        - This has 12 instead of 2012(2 positions after 2nd slash/)
Can anyone please help me to write query to extract date from this string?
    Vicky

    Hi Jingyang
    Li,
I checked your query and it looks good but I have one issue. So when we reverse it, it looks like below and it is talking that $57.80 as a 1st numeric value and try to convert it into date and giving me error.
I realize from your query that you are trying to reverse the value and then try to find out 1st Numeric value from that string, but my whole string has another numeric value at the end, like
"One Month Letter on 1/15/2009 due to non-pmt of prems-amt to avoid DE is $57.80"
So when we reverse it, it looks like below and it is taking that $57.80 as a 1st numeric value and try to convert it into date and giving me error.
"08.75$ si ED diova ot eud tma - smerp fo tmp-non ot eud 9002/51/1 no retteL htnoM enO"
Also sometimes I have $ amount at the end and sometimes I don't have any $ amount at the end, like below,
"One Month letter sent on 10/15/2012 due to non-payment of premiums. The amount due to avoid dise"
Can you please modify your query which takes only date part not the $ amount and give me?
Thank you so much for your help

  • Parse/seperate data from string

I have a string that is returned from Google GeoCoding:
    {   "name": "193 Farrow Hill Road,Davisville,WV",   "Status": {     "code": 200,     "request": "geocode"   },   "Placemark": [ {     "id": "p1",     "address": "Davisville, WV, USA",     "AddressDetails": {    "Accuracy" : 4,    "Country" : {       "AdministrativeArea" : {          "AdministrativeAreaName" : "WV",          "SubAdministrativeArea" : {             "Locality" : {                "LocalityName" : "Davisville"             },             "SubAdministrativeAreaName" : "Wood"          }       },       "CountryName" : "USA",       "CountryNameCode" : "US"    } },     "ExtendedData": {       "LatLonBox": {         "north": 39.2357655,         "south": 39.1665921,         "east": -81.4344257,         "west": -81.5624851       }     },     "Point": {       "coordinates": [ -81.4984554, 39.2011873, 0 ]     }   } ] }
I want to be able to parse this data into variables that I can use and update a table.
I currently use ListGetAt() function and try to find common delimiters to narrow down what I am trying to parse, but this processes does not always return the results I am needing.
Does anyone know of any faster more robust way of parsing this string down to variables? And, it could be that I am not using the ListGetAt() to its full potential as well....
What I need most out of this string is in bold below...you'll notice different string lengths depending on if it recognizes the street address or not.
This is the string returned if it DOES NOT recognize the street address:
    {   "name": "193 Farrow Hill Road,Davisville,WV",   "Status": {     "code": 200,     "request": "geocode"   },   "Placemark": [ {     "id": "p1",     "address": "Davisville, WV, USA",     "AddressDetails": {    "Accuracy" : 4,    "Country" : {       "AdministrativeArea" : {          "AdministrativeAreaName" : "WV",          "SubAdministrativeArea" : {             "Locality" : {                "LocalityName" : "Davisville"             },             "SubAdministrativeAreaName" : "Wood"          }       },       "CountryName" : "USA",       "CountryNameCode" : "US"    } },     "ExtendedData": {       "LatLonBox": {         "north": 39.2357655,         "south": 39.1665921,         "east": -81.4344257,         "west": -81.5624851       }     },     "Point": {       "coordinates": [ -81.4984554, 39.2011873, 0 ]     }   } ] }
This is the string returned if it DOES recognize the street address:

That is indeed JSON, as Jochem says. You can pick out data using structs and arrays. You will know which structure or array functionality to use after doing something like this

  • Bug in "Unflatten from String" (LV7)

I have binary files with different versions of a certain datatype. When loading a file, I try to unflatten the data using the newest dataversion. If I get an error, I try the 2nd newest dataversion and so on until I found the right datatype. This methode was ok up to LV6.01.
Now I updated to LV7.0ger and I found following bug:
When unflatting certain binary datas from string I get an error msg window "Nicht genügend Speicher zum Abschließen dieser Operation". The error-output of the vi is incorrect.
Does anybody know a workaround of that bug?
You can test the bug with the attached vi. Include also the two typedefs.

    Hi,
From the LV's help: "National Instruments recommends reworking any
application that uses the Convert 4.x Data mode as a long term solution.".
Data types may vary with differenct versions of LabVIEW. So, if types are
not the same, this does not need to be a bug. Right click the Unflatten From
String, and select Convert 4.x Data. This might not work, because the data
is stored with Lv 5 or 6, but when you get it working, it will keep working
    for future versions of LV.
The attached VI shows that a sting in a cluster does not convert to the same
type string for lv4.x and lv7. Perhaps they are the same for lv4.x and lv6.
If so, using convert 4.x data would be sufficient. If not, you need to read
the data in 6, save the binary 4.x strings
, and use 4.x from then on.
You might also do the following: (also from the help) "If you use this
function to flatten data from a custom control or indicator that you saved
as a type definition, the function strips the type definition of its type
definition wrapper. If you do not want to strip this wrapper, right-click
the function and select Expose Typedefs from the shortcut menu."

I allready told this to a NI tech support in Germany. They told me,
the bug is known, but they do?nt have a workaround.
So I hope for LV7.1 or maybe LV7.01.

  • Conversion from string "20041023 " to type 'Date' is not valid.

    Hi ,
I have a table with one of the column(EmpHiredate) datatype is char(10). It has value like "20141023". I need to display this value as date format(dd/mm/yyyy) in report.
Following methods i tried in textbox expression but no luck.
    =Format(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,"dd/MM/yyyy")
    =Cdate(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value)
    Error:
[rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the textrun ‘EmpHireDate.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: Conversion from string "20041023  " to type 'Date' is not valid.
Is it possible to convert string to date using SSRS textbox expression ? Can anyone help me with the solution.
    Thanks,
    Kittu

    Hi Jmcmullen,
Found one more issue on the same. I have one value like "00000000" for the column(EmpHiredate)
    , when i use above expression values(ex:"20141023")
are displaying in dd/MM/yyyy format in report except value like "00000000" and giving following error:
[rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the textrun ‘EmpHireDate.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: Conversion from string "0000/00/00" to type 'Date' is not valid.
Even i tried to pass its original value("00000000") as below but no luck.
    =IIF(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value = "00000000","00000000",Format(CDATE(MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,1,4) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,5,2) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,7,2)),"dd/MM/yyyy"))
    Also tried this:
    =IIF(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value = "00000000","2000/10/21",Format(CDATE(MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,1,4) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,5,2) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,7,2)),"dd/MM/yyyy"))
    Please Suggest.
    Thanks ,
    Kittu

  • Determining Date Range from Pay Date Information

I have a table of employees with different pay dates because they are college interns and they leave at different dates, so their most recent pay date will be different. I have created a query to find the most recent pay date.  The pay periods are bi-weekly.
I have a table called tblPayPeriods with all of the pay dates. I have created a query that pulls the most current pay date for each intern and I want to match that pay date to the pay date of the Pay Periods table and increment back twenty pay periods.
Once I have determined the oldest pay date I want to use that range for a calculation for average hours ultimately.  I can handle the average hours part but I'm having trouble with the pay dates part of this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
Here is the SQL statement to find the most current pay date for each intern:
SELECT tblMeasurementPeriod.EENum, Max(tblMeasurementPeriod.[Pay Date]) AS [MaxOfPay Date]
FROM tblEmployees INNER JOIN tblMeasurementPeriod ON tblEmployees.[EE Num] = tblMeasurementPeriod.EENum
    WHERE (((tblEmployees.[Measurement Period])="initial"))
    GROUP BY tblMeasurementPeriod.EENum;
Here is the SQL statement using the query joined to the pay date table:
    SELECT qryFindLatestPayDateforINITIAL.EENum, qryFindLatestPayDateforINITIAL.[MaxOfPay Date], tblPayDate.[Pay Date]
    FROM qryFindLatestPayDateforINITIAL INNER JOIN tblPayDate ON qryFindLatestPayDateforINITIAL.[MaxOfPay Date] = tblPayDate.[Pay Date];
    Alicia Hunsberger

You have the Intern Last Pay Date (LPD)
You want to match that LPD to the pay date of the Pay Periods table...
** so the first question is - are you able to? what is the obstacle on this?
and increment back twenty pay periods
** is there a fixed math you can rely on, such as subtract 180 days?...will that work to determine the pay date 20 periods previously?  it would be great if the pay periods had a sequential integer in their record - - - that would make it easy....

  • Date time string from UME-SPML interface

    Hi,
I am using the UME-SPML interface to manage users in SAP UME and using AS ABAP user management as the user store for UME.
I have noticed a problem in the date time string returned in the SPML search response when I search for a user. When you search for a user, normally you get 3 date time strings for "validfrom", "validto" and "lastmodifydate".
These are what have been returned in the SPML response:
    <attr name="lastmodifydate"><value>20101019030648Z</value></attr>
    <attr name="validfrom"><value>20101019010000Z</value></attr>
    <attr name="validto"><value>25001230010000Z</value></attr>
When I check the same user with the user management administration console, I get these:
Date of Account Creation: Oct 19, 2010 2:06:48 PM (Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales))
Start Date of Account Validity: Oct 20, 2010 12:00:00 AM (Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales))
End Date of Account Validity: Dec 31, 2500 12:00:00 AM (Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales))
The timezone I am in is GMT10 (Australia Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales)) and now we in day light saving so effectively we are in GMT11 now.
You can see that the datetime string for "lastmodifydate" correctly reflects what's shown on user management administration console.
But the datetime strings for "validfrom" and "validto" seems to get the conversion wrong: both seem to be using 12 hour format instead of 24 hour format. (2010 10 19 01 00 00Z should be 2010 10 19 13 00 00Z and 2500 12 30 01 00 00Z should be 2500 12 30 13 00 00Z)(I have put in a space in the string to break up the date time components)
Anyone has any idea what went wrong here?
    Regards,
    GG

Also search service.sap.com for the term "sy-zonlo".
Personally I am a member of the [flat earth society|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_Society] when it get to this topic, because it causes no end of problems.
Most customers simply stop operations on 31.12.xxxx or before, or alternately use reporting tools to make corrections afterwards.
In the security realm, SAP also respects server side timestamp tolerances (only a few seconds are allowed).
Time is server time in my books. Some people work late, others early - and there is nothing you can control to stop a customer in the US from placing an order via a system in Japan anyway.
Anyway, this is probably a program error with the 12 hour format in the component software or possibly the API interface to user management in your release so you should open a customer message with SAP (my best guess).
    Cheers,
    Julius
