Determine the Number of Characters in a field

Hello All,
I have a program where a character field of length 200 becomes populated with Purchase Order Text. Is it possible through a function module or another option to determine the length of the field when populated? For instance, if only 125 characters are populated in the 200 character field, then the function module would return the 125 value. Thanks.

Determine the number of lines of textfield or floating field

Hi,
Is there a way to determine the number of lines of text in a textfield or in a floatingfield.
My problem is that I'm creating a form with three tables(made of subforms) underneed each other that needs to be set to hidden when the total of rows is greater than 25.
Now it would be easy to just count the rows but these rows can exist of multiple lines of text.
The fields of my row are floating fields so when the text is bigger than the displayable width the text continous on a new line in the same row. So I need to know when this happens because now I can show only 24 rows.
I tried counting the characters but this doesn't work, when there are a lot of 'i,j,l' or other small characters I can place 40 characters in my textfield, but when there are a lot of 'm,w' characters I can place only 22 characters in my field.
I also tried to use xfa.layout.h(TextField1,"cm") to determine the height of the field, but it always retuns the value -1. I get the same -1 with the y or x - position.
Does anybody have an idea how to solve this problem?

How to set number of characters in input field ?

I am creating an input field dynamically (via CL_WD_INPUT_FIELD).
I am binding the value (via BIND_VALUE) to an attribute with type CHAR30.
I want to give the possibility to enter a number with 4 digits (0 - 9999).
Is it possible to restrict the number of characters that can be entered to 4 (although the BIND_VALUE attribute has a type CHAR30, that allows 30)?
I have tried it via set_length, bind_length but it seems that the length of the BIND_VALUE attribute overrules the length information...

AFAIk you have no other option as using a NUM4 here.
Set Length just sets the lengths of the inputfield according to the current character set ... count of charcters but does not limit the value you may enter

Increasing the number of Characters in a Characteristic

We are trying to increase the number of characters in a characteristic (CT04) from 30 characters to about 50 characters. Is there a SAP OSS note that we can implement in ECC6 to enable us to make this work for us ?

Now i get your requirement.
I have seen similar arrangements being used at a project for maintaining document location in characteristics.
But they don't maintain complete path in the characteristics. They have maintained certain codes for repetitive paths.
Say you want to select path X:\Intranet\Common Folders\Documents\Store1\ , the code would be Doc_Store1. And Doc_Store1 can be stored in characteristics Values.
Another way i can think of is mainatianing 2 Characteristics. In this way you may select the path upto defined length(less than 30 chars) in 1st Characteristic(Main Path)(X:\Intranet\Common Folders\),
and remaining path in 2nd Characteristic(Sub Path)(Documents\Store1\).
And the module is Cross Application module so modifying the std field is not recommended. We had to find out work around solutions in our case and at some places inform client about its limitations.

Counting the number of characters entered into a page item

Is there a way to count the number of characters that are entered into a page item. I've got a field that can contain up to 20 characters. If 20 are entered I can do a = on my search, if less than that, then I have to do a wildcard search. I currently do a substr on the field to see if position 21 is null and position 20 is not null, then I have a 20 character field. Is there a more efficient way to do this and also is there a way to actually show the character count as the page item is being populated

Try coding the select for your search as
select ...
from some_table
where some_field like case when length(trim(:YOUR_ITEM)) = 20 then :YOUR_ITEM else :YOUR_ITEM || '%' end
Note - I included the trim() assuming blank characters before or after shouldn't count.
To show the character count as the item is being keyed-in, Google "javascript character count" for lots of ways to do this. To work these solutions into ApEx, check the ApEx help/documentation for incorporating JavaScript into your application - specifically the references on accessing page items using JavaScript.

Count number of Characters in CLOB field

I posted this on another database, but I think it really belongs here. I have a CLOB field that stores reports in HTML markup languate. Here's an example of a report.

I'm trying to provide a query that counts the number of characters that is not a HTML tag nor whitespace. I've attempted to use a combination of the length and replace function which first replace all HTML tags and whitespaces with nothing and then uses length to calculate the number of characters. Here's what the function looks like.
 length(trim (both ' ' from replace (replace (replace(replace (replace(replace(replace(replace (replace(replace(replace (replace(replace (replace(reports.report_text ,'</head>',''),'</title>',''),'<body contenteditable="true" text="#000000" bgcolor="#ffffff">',''),'</body>',''),'</html>',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'',''),'>','')))
 
For the example above, the number of characters counted in the outputs is 66, which is clearly incorrect. I need to only count these characters for the example above "thisisatestforabilateralmodifier", but there is still white space that remains after I do the sequence of replaces. If someone can help, it's be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is there a way to set a limit on the number of characters each cell will hold in numbers?

Hi there, I'm creating a CSV file via Numbers and would like to set a limit to the number of characters a cell will hold in numbers. This way, when I copy text from my source, and paste it into the numbers cell, the text will be cut off at the character limit I've placed for that cell.
Specifically, I would like my character limit per cell in a column on a new spreadsheet to be 100 characters. I have text to copy & paste into roughly 10 different cells and I'd like it to all be 100 characters.
I am using Numbers version 9 of iWork and 10.7.5 OS.

I don't quite understand what your suggestion was and before I try to figure it out and play around with numbers, I thought I should clarify further. When i wrote I want to paste the content into the cell and have it limited to 100 characters I was mis-spoken. I actually have all the content already in the columns in a spreadsheet and would now like to just limit some of the columns to hold only 100 characters in a cell so that when its a CSV file it will be accepted to the program I'm trying to upload it to.
SO does that change the way you can answer my question?
Is there a way to just limit the content currently in a spreadsheet to 100 characters per cell?

How to determine the number of pixels of a desired object within a digital photograph?

Hi everyone. I want to determine the number of pixels in an object that is part of a digital photo. I use cameras to film chunks of ice breaking away from ice cliffs or tidewater glaciers. I want to know the size of the ice chunk that my digital photographs capture. I know the width and height of the ice cliff in metres already, so I was thinking that I could convert the equivalent of 1 pixel : ? metres - this is really what I want to do. That way every time I see a chunk of ice breaking off, I can pull up the photo, outline the chunk, calculate how many pixels fill the area of ice removed by the chunk breaking off and convert to metres area 2 - thus giving me my size order. If anyone has ideas on how to do this I would really appreciate it, thanks so much community. I was thinking that Photoshop or Fireworks could help me with this, Ricky

The Photoshop help measurement page is brilliant and I think I can use the info on that page to work out my iceberg sizes. Check out the attached photo - you are looking at an ice cliff - essentially the front of a tidewater glacier that flows in the ocean. I'm a research student and I look at the process of iceberg calving - this is the term we use to define the sudden breaking away or detachment of ice chunks from glaciers that end in the sea.
I used the lasso tool to crop the area of ice lost as a single chunk of ice detached from the ice cliff. At the same time I had the histogram window open. The histogram showed me how many pixels were contained in the cropped area. What I need to do now is work out what 1 pixel is equivalent to in metres. Soon I will have a digital elevation model for the ice cliff that will offer centimetre to metre scale resolution of the surface topography - so that should really help. The photographs I have are taken every 30 seconds - which is brilliant for documenting how the geometry of the ice cliff adjusts in response to detaching ice pieces and also because the ice is moving. I am a research student in Canada, and at the time I took the photos we measured that the ice cliff was advancing at a rate of approximately 12 metres per day! That's pretty fast. The flow of the ice is a first order control on the rate of iceberg production - you are essentially pushing ice into the ocean where it breaks off. I'm having to learn everything Photoshop from scratch...so please bare with me because maybe some of the photoshop questions I ask are simple to most!
I noticed the "integrated density" function on the help sheet you suggested. This function also provides the square number of pixels contained in the cropped area I select...I guess this is similar to the histogram right?
Either way - i just need the scale conversion to go from 1 pixel : metres or cm equivalent. At that point I think I will have to manually select every single iceberg event from my time-lapse photos and do this the manual way! I have about 800 events to manually digitise and calculate the area for...

How to determine the number of messages in a queue, that ...

what's the proper way to count the number of the messages in an Advanced Queue that are currently visible to consumers?
Currently we use:
select count(*) from aq$queue_tab_name q where q.QUEUE = 'Q_NAME';
The problem with that approach:
If one consumer dequeues a lot of messages in one transaction, that change in the number of messages visible to other consumers is only made visible after the consumer issues a commit. Before the commit is issued, the above "select count(*) ..." statement (issued from a different DB-session) does not reflect the fact that one consumer consumed a lot of messages, messages that are not available to other consumers anymore (only exception: the original consumer issues a rollback sooner or later).
So before the commit is issued:
-the consumed messages are NOT visible to other consumers anymore (which is intended behaviour)
-but the "select count(*) ..." statement (issued from a different DB session) does NOT reflect that fact
So the case could arise that the queue becomes empty, while "select count(*) ..." says that e.g. 1000 messages are still in the queue.
Is there a solution to this problem?
PS: For our use-case we need these dequeue option :
dbms_aq.remove;
dbms_aq.first_message;
dbms_aq.on_commit;
Again, the queue itself works correctly, I just need to find a way to determine the number messages that are currently dequeable / visible to the consumers at specific point in time.
I couldn't find a func/proc in dbms_aq for that purpose.

Coding - returning the number of characters in a text box.

I am in the process of creating a cell phone simulation/animation in Edge Animate CC for use in a Captivate course. Basically, when a user clicks on number buttons on the virtual keypad, it displays the numbers in a text box , just like an actual cell phone would display the phone number on the screen as a caller is dialing. So, the user would click seven buttons and a seven-digit phone number appears on the virtual phone screen. This part of my animation works great and all seven digits appear, but I would like to modify the code so that a hyphen appears after the third button clicked. This way, the output better resembles an actual phone number instead of just a string of seven digits.
Here is an example of the code I currently have assigned to the #2 button on the virtual keypad:

PhoneNum is the name of my text box on the stage where the digits appear as each keypad button is clicked.

Does anyone know how I can use either JavaScript or jQuery to return the number of characters currently in the PhoneNum text box?

No problem!
Basically the thing to remember is that unless you are needing to pass html to the object, you can use text() instead. text() also gives you the raw text without any html formatting (so you can assume what .html() would return)
