Determing DBA vs IMP_FULL_DATABASE in 9i vs 10g

Is there a difference between 9i and 10g in the way they each determine whether a user has DBA with regards to importing an export that was exported by a DBA user?
The reason I ask, we have an export that was taken from a 9i database using a 9i client where the user had the DBA role. When we go to import this file we are successful importing using a user that only has connect and im_full_database IF we are importing into a 10g database. If we try importing into a 9i database with a user having just those same 2 roles, we get the error: IMP-00013: only a DBA can import a file exported by another DBA
This is expected but I was curious about the fact that 10g seems to be a little more lenient with regards to whether the importing user is a DBA than 9i is.
Were there any known changes to this feature between 9i and 10g?
Tina

Yes, actually I did and it was successful. At the time I posted I had only tried it importing into a 10g database so I was taking our customers word for the fact that it didn't work.
But you are correct... I installed 9i client and imported into a 9i database and it works fine for me as well. I'm having the customer check nls settings on the client, even though I don't know why that would give a 013 error.
I've just been told that the customer does have access to a DBA user on the database so why he is not just using that and going forward I do not know. Admittedly it is an odd problem but it could be something unique to that particular database.
The export file does have raw data types in it. It also has a date column and some number columns but none of the actual number values have decimals. (thus my thoughts towards the nls settings for number)
NUMBER(9)
VARCHAR2(80)
VARCHAR2(80)
RAW(2000)
RAW(2000)
NUMBER(1)
DATE
NUMBER(9)
This is the command the customer used to create the user to import with. Let me know if you see anything that stands out that might be causing a problem. One of our other engineers says she tried this exact command to create a user and then used it to import successfully, but I did not try it myself.
CREATE USER TEST

ALTER USER TEST DEFAULT ROLE NONE;

GRANT CREATE SESSION TO TEST;

Thanks so much for your responses,

    Hi,
    First of all, you better created a new thread for this question, but still an attempt to answer your questions:
    Sizing is a very delicate task. It will be very difficult to size only on database size and # concurrent users.
    What anyone in this business would need to know is the processor architecture (Intel/Sparc/Power/etc.) and speed, the type of OS, etc.
    The best thing you can do is go to your hardware provider and see if they have anything like a sizing questionnaire to fill in (I know IBM, HP and Sun -at least used to- have them) and send it back to them to come up with a sizing estimate for you.
    It is generally better to have the Concurrent Manager away from the database tier. You can consider separate Concurrent Manager nodes, or include them into your application tier nodes.

  • DBA role

    Hi
    DB 11g
    One user has GRANT ANY ROLE privilege, and when it's trying to grant "DBA" role... it's throwing insufficient privilege... where in case of ' IMP_FULL_DATABASE" & " SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE" it's went fine... why not DBA role .???

    Hi,
    It seems that there is a little confusing among some Oracle documentations. According to [url http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76956/privs.htm#15013] Managing User Privileges and Roles since Oracle 8i documentation, the roles CONNECT, RESOURCE and DBA are automatically defined for Oracle databases as part of database creation. On the other hand, there is a note:
    "Note: The previous three roles are provided to maintain compatibility with previous versions of Oracle and may not be created automatically in future versions of Oracle. Oracle Corporation recommends that you design your own roles for database security, rather than relying on these roles"
    Now, according to [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/network.102/b14266/authoriz.htm#i1007401]Oracle 10g documentation:
    "5.2.7 Predefined Roles
    The following roles are defined automatically for Oracle Database:
    * CONNECT
    * RESOURCE
    * DBA
    * EXP_FULL_DATABASE
    * IMP_FULL_DATABASE
    These roles are provided for backward compatibility to earlier versions of Oracle Database and can be modified in the same manner as any other role in an Oracle database.
    Note: Each installation should create its own roles and assign only those privileges that are needed, thus retaining detailed control of the privileges in use. This process also removes any need to adjust existing roles, privileges, or procedures whenever Oracle Database changes or removes roles that Oracle Database defines. For example, the CONNECT role now has only one privilege: CREATE SESSION. Both CONNECT and RESOURCE roles will be deprecated in future Oracle versions."
    In resume, the CONNECT and RESOURCE roles will be deprecated in future Oracle versions, but there is nothing about DBA role.
    Cheers

  • Please Guide...OCA/OCP For ADMIN DBA

    Hi dear Friends,
    I need some guidence regarding the OCA and OCP track. I am working as a technical consultant and my area of working is sql plsql forms reports , Apps etc... I have done my Engineering in Computer Science and MBA in Information Systems.. and i prefered/fwded for a functional consultant.. but ended up in the technical field(it was toughtime to get a job,recession or whatsoever reason.. i got it last december). Though i dnt prefer to be a Technical person in the long term, i had the DBA dream in mind and with the thinking that a good DBA has to have good technical knowledge i'm in this field.. Now i'm preparing for my OCA and OCP and planning to complete both by next april or may and move to DBA side(Admin not developer DBA). I choose Oracle Database 10g: Administration I 1Z0-042 and Oracle Database 10g: Administration II 1Z0-043 for OCA and OCP and the preliminary i'll choose any sql as it'll be easy for me, since i'm working on that.. I already read the sybex admin 1 material and found its easy.. also 'll get a copy of 10 g database by this weekend(both linux and windows), I had RHCE 3 certification, which 'm planning to update to 5..
    I would like to know how easy/difficult the path to become an OCP(later try for the nxt level) and the kind of preparation needed.. Any input on how to prepare and is it ok to write in 10-g or is it possible to write 11-g(easiness) aftr prep with a 10-G database... 'm very clear on my track that i dnt want to be on the developer side...
    awaiting your experiences and valuable suggestions
    thanks and regards

    You are studying for professional certifications and if you wish to avoid problems you should really get into the habit of using professional term that don't bring the certification program into disrepute:
    Extracting from the link I gave ...
    >
    Utilize study methods that work for you. We suggest that these might include:
    * Practice Exams – look for legitimately available practice exams or sample questions*
    If you are professional and mean practice tests then say practice tests or perhaps even better authorized practice exams or authorized sample questions
    IMHO The term dumps is promoted by cheaters and disreputes as shorthand for braindumps and other unauthorized training material.
    Use of the correct terminology is a great help on keeping one right on [The route you choose|http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/2009/05/the_route_you_choose.html] and enables a proper professional approach to certification.
    (The other way could lead to a ban from certification exams and existing certification exams being nullified).
    I realised there is probably a very bad culture and pressures in some some circles and educational institutions with regard to dumps and other unauthrorized learning material and material in breach of copyright ..... studying for professional certifications one should aim to practice a higher standard of professionalism.
    Rgds -bigdelboy.
    PS: Okay Okay - bigdelboy knows bigdelboy spends most of life trying to seem like an unprofessional or semi-professional scruff/layabout himself with weird humour sense ...( but bigdelboy does care passionately about backups and things.)
    PPS: why oh why does this forum have a tag of dumps ? .... its a free world I guess .... least some of it is.

  • App. server Certification for OCP DBA

    Greetings !!!!!!!!!
    I am OCP Database Administrator in 10g,9i,8i and now I am planning to take the certification in App Server.
    Can someone please tell me which exam should I write to get app server certified?
    Do I need to write two exams or only with one exam I can get the app server certification?
    Thanks in Advance !!!!!!!!!!
    Regards
    null

    There are two exams to get OCP Application server 10g DBA similar to the OCP Database 10g exams. The exam names are
    Oracle 10g Application server Administration I
    Oracle 10g Application server Administration II
    If you clear the first exam you get 'Oracle Certified Associate OCA' certificate and after clearing the second exam and attending a Application Server Administration training from Oracle University will fetch you the 'Oracle Certified Professional OCP' certificate.
    This is similar to the Oracle Database 10g OCP DBA program.

    Could i use this tutorial for Oracle 9i?, i think that the tool for administration is diferent.
    I'm sorry for my english, but i'm spanish.
    Thank you.

    Ahora entiendo, no creo que exista un manual 2 day DBA para 9.02, pero aqui encontraras manuales que te puedan ayudar...

  • Database roles

    Hello, please i have a question:
    Is there any way to find out roles that belong to database only?, e.g.: EXECUTE_CATALOG_ROLE, GATHER_SYSTEM_STATISTICS, etc, because if i query dba_roles table, it selects all the roles including application ones.
    Thanks in advance.

    Each database version may have its own predefined roles, these cannot be derived from DBA_ROLES,only from documentation. For 10g:
    5.2.7 Predefined Roles
    The following roles are defined automatically for Oracle Database:
    CONNECT
    RESOURCE
    DBA
    EXP_FULL_DATABASE
    IMP_FULL_DATABASE
    These roles are provided for backward compatibility to earlier versions of Oracle Database and can be modified in the same manner as any other role in an Oracle database.
    Note:
    Each installation should create its own roles and assign only those privileges that are needed, thus retaining detailed control of the privileges in use. This process also removes any need to adjust existing roles, privileges, or procedures whenever Oracle Database changes or removes roles that Oracle Database defines. • Ctx_doc.snippet increase the number of occurrences returned

    Hi everybody,
    I am pretty new on Oracle Text so please be merciful :)
    I am on Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 and I need to provide my users with ALL snippets found in a text, but it seems that CTX_DOC.SNIPPET restricts the number of snippets occurrences (I will exemplify it later).
    The question is: is there a way to increase the number of results/snippets returned by CTX_DOC.SNIPPET ?
    In the example that follows, I create the table "mysearch" and an index of type CTXSYS.CONTEXT, then I run the final SELECT query with CTX_DOC.SNIPPET() to obtain a list of most relevant fragments.
    If you run the query - see the column "SNIPPET" - record #6 is returning only the first 4 occurrences. In this case (especially because is a single row) I would expect to find all 6 occurrences instead of 4.
    Again, if looking to record #7 I have only 3 occurrences.
    Then for record #8 I have only 2 occurrences.
    I know that CTX_DOC.SNIPPET retrieves the "most" relevant fragment, but I would like to obtain the full list of fragments present in the indexed text. Is there a way (or an alternate method) to accomplish what I like to do.
    I have also noted that CTX_DOC.MARKUP can be used on the same index to retrieve the full text "marked-up" with my query terms, so I know Oracle has indexed the text somewhere, I need only to get it out !
    Any help will be very appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Luigi

  • LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not set!

    I am working my way through a dba book and have succesfully installed 10g on OEL 4
    I am now trying to create the database and on starting the oracle instance I get this error:
    Cannot determine all dependent dynamic libraries for /proc/self/exe
    Unable to find dynamic library libocr10.so in search paths
    RPATH = /ade/aime1_build2101/oracle/has/lib/:/ade/aime1_build2101/oracle/lib/:/ade/aime1_build2101/oracle/has/lib/:

    Unable to find dynamic library libocrutl10.so in search paths
    Unable to find dynamic library libocrutl10.so in search paths
    The strange thing is that when i issue echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH I do get the path that I set:

    I have not tried to create a database yet but will try now,

    just want to make sure that this will not cause a problemSo just try it. If it does cause a problem, you'll know it. If it does not cause a problem, you'll know it. What's the worst that can happen? Whether it works or not, you'll learn something, and that is your self-admitted objective - to learn.

    Dear all:
    This is the question
    Was it an upgrade for 10g ocp ?was it need hand course ?You are a 11g DBA OCP. You do not need to take this exam.
    This exam is for 10g DBA OCP's to achieve 11g DBA OCP.
    The pre-requisites for achieving 11g DBA by this route are ( Prior 10g DBA OCP plus 1z0-050 pass). (The link by 'orafad' is useful and authorative).
    However the link http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=198 is possibly not useful when visited from http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_exam_id=1Z0_050.
    For upgrades http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=44 (Already certified ... upgrade my certifcation).
