Determining Image Size

Hi there,
I have a tilelist with images from flickr. if you click on
one of them, they open up in a popup.
I would like to determine the size of the big image and use a
slider to scale it.
It seems as if the size is set to zero every time I try to
scale it and so the image disappears when using the slider.
quote:
<mx:VBox width="100%" verticalCenter="0">
<mx:Image id="bigPic" source="{picURL}"
creationComplete="imageWidth=bigPic.width;
imageHeight=bigPic.height;"/>
</mx:VBox>
private function changeSize():void
//scale image with slider
bigPic.width=uint(imageWidth*hSlider.value/100);
bigPic.height=uint(imageHeight*hSlider.value/100);
Help, please!

ok, my fault cause wrong event.
Needs Event.complete!

  • Calculating image sizes for ibookstore submission

    I have the new ipad...so all my graphics look great, but I am having a hard time finding the exact method for determining image size for a book I am submitting to ibookstore. Can anyone point me to a way to calculate the best and largest images for ibooks

    For all those who are still confused by Apples image restrictions / requirements...
    In the new Template chooser after the recent updates is "Antique". This template has a Chapter background image ( the olde world print of sailing ships in blue litho print style ). This print when opened in PS is 2771 x 1506 @72ppi. 2771x1506=4,173,126 pixels.This implies  Apple supply a book which does not comply with its own requirements!
    Higher  image resolution applied to printed photo inmages, make the image sharper. If for example you wanted to print a wall poster 45inches  wide, the  image needs needs a higher resolution to cater for the size, BUT the same image used for a 45" poster will print 4.5" wide print on your own printer!
    iBA full page is deemed to be 1024 x 748. resolution from Apple is 72ppi. An image with those specifications will be OK in iPad & iPad 2 - but not so sharp on a Retina display especially if zoomed larger on screen
    Now it seems 2048 x 1496 - double the original image size is suggested for Retina.
    You  can change an image in PS i.e. 1024 x 748 and change resolution to 144. PS will double the pixel size as you change the resolution. OK, just change pixel sizes back to 1024 x 748 and reolution is now 144.
    That indicates a sharper image which will be suitable for retina display and in fact all current iPad models.
    Today my 11th photo book was notified as available  in the iBook Store, all my images were pre-formatted at 2048 x 1496 @ 150ppi.   ( 2048 x 1496 = 3.063,808 pixels!)
    During delivery there were no issues flagged and after delivery no tickets.
    So I suggest all those folk pondering images sizes follow my example, which  is now proved to be accepatble!
    One thing puzzles me though, I dont use all images as full page and  they can  be masked down to - say - 250 x 200.  Should  just  make an image to fit the size I  want to display ??

  • Determining the size of an Image

    I am running Pages 5.2 and I have a document with a whole load of images taken from photos. Usually I shrink the original images to keep the document size manageable but I forgot on some but I don't know which. Is there a way I can determine the size of individual images in the document ?

    In Pages v5.2, there does not appear any means to assess the image storage size, but File > Reduce File Size will offer a prompt stating an amount it can reduce the current selected image.
    Another approach is to select the image, and press command+C to put it on the clipboard. Launch Preview, ignore the open dialog, and choose File > New from Clipboard. You now have two choices to assess image size: 1) Use the Inspector (General Info panel) from the toolbar, or 2) Menu > Tools > Adjust Size...

  • How do I determine the size of an image ( bytes not dimensions )?

    I am working on an application which downloads images from the web and caches them for speed reasons. I want to allow the users to browse the cache and dump selected images to free up memory. Ideally I would display the image size in bytes for each cache entry, but I haven't seen any way to access this info.
    I do not want dimensions. getIconHeight() * getIconWidth() doesn't address bit depth at all, which can make a huge difference. If there was some getBytes() method I could use that, but I haven't found one yet.
    Help?

    Only if you use a stream and count the bytes. I'm loading it like this:
    ImageIcon foo = new ImageIcon( new URL( "http://foo/bar/baz.gif" ) );

  • IE incompatible ? Image size.

    Hi,
    I know very little about HTML, CSS and the like but as a photographer I upload gallery webs all the time for clients etc. I generate these in PS CS2 or iView MediaPro and then upload to my server (shared web hosting).
    With a current project requiring a 'site' type environment I decided to try iWeb. Before visiting this site please note that due to image sizes with iWeb it's a bit on the heavy side and if you're using IE on a PC BEWARE of crashes! Safari may even crash as has done with me.
    http://www.kura-images.com/camping
    Remarks and problems :
    1. As you can see my site does not resemble any iWeb template - using the 'modern' template I basically threw everything away and designed from scratch. It's a great WYSIWYG appli in that sense - no code - just drag and drop, resize, add some effects etc. I published regulary to a folder as a way of double checking but was impressed with the 100% WYSIWYG capability of iWeb
    2. Image size is a MAJOR problem. My concerns are specifically with the gallery pages generated from the photo page temps. Thumbnails at 16ko is too big and the motor that generates the large image files uses a single parameter (800pixels largest dimension) that cannot be changed in any pref settings etc. It also uses a compression factor which is a tad too high. Using Image Ready or the PS gallery web function (driven by Image Ready) I can get as good visual quality for my web-optimised JPEGS for 65% of the file size.
    Note : I tried this file swap as a test
    I changed one image in the folder for the "activités" page (activities_008) - I made a smaller thumbnail in ImageReady and created a 600pixel version of the large file; I replaced the images in the folder with these and checked the site. The thumb appears no problem in a smaller size (btw 6ko vs 16ko - that's a big diff when you apply it to 250 images !). SlideshowJS however has instructions to open the image at main size as determined by the slideshow index file creation generated by iWeb. And that's written as 800pixels. So on opening the 600 pixel image I'd replaced, slideshowJS opened it to 800pixels (not pretty). The only way to rectify that was to go into the source code in the relevant 'activités' js file, find the codeline for the image 008 and change the values manually. And I'd have to do that with 250 line of code ! That rather defeats the prupose of having a nice easy application to produce your galleries.
    3. Upload to my server via Transmit was trouble-free. No problems publishing to a non .mac server.
    4. Problem with the page titles. The names you give to pages determines the URL. Any spaces means you get the %20 thing and if, like me, you're writing in French the accents mean that iWeb has to get around the problem in a different, and not very practical, way. iWeb creates a random character line as a name, and uses that as the URL for pages where accents appear in the title. When the assets and index page are published those long character names appear on the index file and folder.
    I also think that may lead to compatability issues with certain servers.
    5. But here's the BIG PROBLEM !
    I had 4 people with PC's and IE (God bless 'em) check out the site. 2 reported repeated crashes of IE (unexpectedly quit exe. error). No problems with the homepage - just when clicking on some of the photo pages. What is really strange is that neither had problems when accessing the 'La Soirée' page, but both had problems with all the others. Apparently the crash came after IE tried to load the page, succeeded in loading a few thumbnails and then stopped and crashed 5-10secs later.
    6. EVEN WORSE !
    I have gone back to my site several times, emptying Safari cache each time, and have succeded in stalling definitively Safari's attempts to load certain pages. Just stops with partial page upload. I then have to quit Safari and re-open to be able to access any web page (even other sites). Sometimes it's OK, sometimes not.
    This site goes officially live on wednesday morning but for now it's a no-goer. Just too erratic and not IE compatible.
    PLEASE, any suggestions ?
    Many thanks in advance

    Yes, it is best to avoid spaces and accents and special characters if you can. If you must have them in your navigation links, then don't use the iWeb nav bar. Instead give your pages very short simple names with the Inspector, uncheck the box for "include in nav bar," and just create ordinary hyperlinks for page navigation. I don't know if this will help with IE compatibility, but it can't hurt.

  • Image size changes when moving an image between Lightroom and CC.

    Image size changes when moving an image between Lightroom and CC.
    I opened a .dng image in LR and then opened it in the Develop module.  I clicked on Crop Overlay and then on the ‘As Shot’ drop down menu (the lock is closed) and cropped to 11 x 17 and clicked ‘Done’-.
    I click Cntl-E and the image opens in CC.  There I click on Image > Image Size and the Image Size  is 13.288 inches by 20.533 inches.
    Why does the image size change?
    I believe there is a menu to control the size of the image and I've looked everywhere I can think of in LR and CC, I googled various descriptions and I checked two of Scott Kelby's books, but I just can't figure out how to keep the image a consistent size when moving between LR and CC.
    Help!...Please?

    The penny will drop soon or maybe the cloud will lift.
    In Lightroom all editing is undoable/nondestructive.
    Hence a crop of 3x2 is not inches, centimetres, pixels or anything else. It is jst a ratio. When a file is exported, either to PS or disk, then the crop ratio has size determined in respect of pixels and inches or cms.
    So my 6000x5000 pixel image I will crop to 3x2 that leaves (before exporting) a 6000x4000 file.
    Now when exported it can be set to export at
    100pixels per inch and will end up at 60x40" when printed.
    200pixels per inch will end up at 30x20"
    300ppi will end at 20x13.3"
    You will notice in the Crop Tool there are no size denominations such as inches or centimetres as an image file only has pixels and the determination of size is done through exporting or printing.
    Hope that helps somewhat..

  • Photo Stream Image Size to iPad

    Is there a way to set the image size dementions that are uploaded via Photo Stream to iPad?

    The image size is determined automatic. See iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
    What resolution are My Photo Stream photos?
    On your Mac or PC, your photos are downloaded and stored in full resolution. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, your Photo Stream photos are delivered in a device-optimized resolution that speeds downloads and saves storage space. While actual dimensions will vary, an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution when pushed to your devices. Panoramic photos can be up to 50 pixels wide.

  • How Image size changes when zoomed ?

    Hi,
    I am using the following method code to zoom-in and zoom-out my images.
        public void zoom(double zoomFac) {
            this.zoomFac = zoomFac;
            atx.setToScale(zoomFac, zoomFac); // global attribute AffineTrasform
            ParameterBlock pb = new ParameterBlock();
            pb.addSource(getDefaultOrjImage());
            pb.add(atx);
            pb.add(Interpolation.getInstance(Interpolation.INTERP_BICUBIC_2));
            rImage = JAI.create("affine", pb);
            repaint();
            this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(rImage.getWidth(), rImage.getHeight()));
            updateUI();
        }One can notice that I am using Bicubic interpolation for the purpose.
    I want to predict the size of Image for a given zoom factor. How can I do this?
    I've seen the algorithm of Bicubic Interpolation, but coulndt figure out how I can use its details to predict the size change of the image.
    clearly speaking if my image's
    width = 512, height = 512,
    What will be the width and height when the image is zoomed with zoomFac = 1.2
    Thank u for ur time.

  • Relation between image size, resolution and pixels

    I would like to increase the size of image by using PSE9.
    For sample existing image had: width (W) 6.073", height (H) 7.683", resolution 300, pixels W 1822, H 2305.
    A situation) when I changed the image to W 8, H10 and click on RESAMPLE the resolution on changed but number of pixels increase to W 2400  and
       H 3036
    B situation) Image size W 8, H 10 and NO ACTIVATED RESAMPLE. Now resolution reduced to 227 and number of pixel NO CHANGED from original
       W 1822, H 2305
    In my understanding if image blow up the number of pixels will be same as original and only the distance between pixels will be increase. So, resolution should
    be dropped.
    Now the question: How in sample A increase number of pixels? From where they come?
    More realistic looks sample B.
    Now other way: I used crop - make original image smaller. So, the number of pixels should degrees and resolution NO CHANGED. But PSE 9 shown number of pixels same and resolution increased.
    Is it right?
    What is wrong or right in above explanation?
    Can visible find the difference between samples A & B on computers monitor? I tried blow up sample B by 10 times and still no differences on screen,It is because resolution of monitor to low?

    A. Resample means elements adds pixels to the existng pixels to increase image size
        and\or resolution and subtracts pixels to downsize. Usually resampling to make an image
        smaller is okay, but resampling to make an image bigger can result in loss of quality.
        Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, just something to keep in mind.
    B. Leaving the resample box unchecked, elements only changes resolution (print size)
        and doesn't change the actual number of pixels (harm the image) so the image will
        be and look the same on your monitor.
    Usually a resampled image will be of lower quality than a non resampled image because
    elements has to make pixels to upsize and subtract pixels to downsize.
    Elements uses the resampling method choosen in the image size dialog to determine how,
    with one of the bicubic choices being the best for photos.
    Elements, as far as i know, uses the standard bicubic mehod for the resampling with the crop tool.

    Hi there! So I am using Lightroom 3 on a pc and I have ran into an issue when exporting images. The DPI and image size (in inches) that I am selecting during the export process. For example I just exported a collection and set the dpi to 180 and the size to 7 inches on the long edge. My exported result is 457 dpi and sized at 3200x2134 pixels.. Any ideas on why this is happening and what I can do to correct it?

    The DPI setting in a digital image has no meaning at all. You need to learn how to calculate what you need in your exported image. The only measurement in a digital image that has any meaning is the number of pixels in each direction. It doesn't matter what you set that DPI to (actually it's PPI or pixels per inch). The image will have the same number of pixels regardless of the setting. If you need an image that is 5 x 7" (for example) at 200 PPI then you would want an image that measured:
    5 x 200 = 1000 pixels
    7 x 200 = 1400 pixels
    So you would need an image that is 1000 x 1400 pixels to have a 5 x 7" image at 200 PPI. The reason your exported image had such a high PPI setting is because you specified the number of inches you wanted the image to be. And there were enough pixels in the image that it calculated out to be that high PPI setting.
    I apologize, I don't explain this very well. But you need to learn to do the math to determine how large you really want your exported images to be.

  • Image size/image quality issue

    I am creating images in Illustrator at certain pixel sizes (as determined by the person I am creating the graphics for), saving them, and then exporting them as .png files.  When the person I am sending them to tries to open the .png files they are actually opening much larger (for example, I created one at 72x72 pixels and it opened as 238x238.  When I open the file in Illustrator, everything shows the file at 72x72.  Is there a way to make sure the image size does not change when saving/exporting it or am I doing something wrong??
    Also, the person using these files is opening them in another program to add things to them/scale them down, and somewhere along the way, they are losing a lot of quality and becoming quite blurry.  Is this due to the fact that they are opening them up in a different program and resaving them?  The original files on my computer come up crystal clear in Illustrator.  Anything that has been sent back to me from this person opens blurry in Illustrator.
    Any help/advice on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!!

    Output your final PNG using the “Save for web and devices” option under the file menu. It will save as 72 dpi…..however the total pixel size of the art will be determined by your art board size.
    A screen optimized graphic can be made blurry if it is rescaled.
    Viewing your PNG in your web browser at 100% should give you an accurate visual.

  • Image size on new files

    I've recently purchased a new machine with windows vista and loaded on CS3 photoshop (which is new to me).
    My problem is when I open a new file it's huge.
    I set the size to a simple A4 and resolution 150 pixels/inch but the image size is 3.24M before I even start. I've done various tests by bringing in old images I created and they do come in at original size, it's just new files. I've gone through all the settings and everything looks normal.
    I'm really stuck with this one.

    Until you save there is no file size. The scratch file size used by Photoshop is not directly controllable. It includes history items, layers, etc., in addition to image data. The image data for an image that is, for example, 1000px x 1500px (i.e., ~1.5 megapixel), will be about 4.5 MB uncompressed in RGB 8 bit per channel (i.e., 24 bit) format. The same image, in an uncompressed RGB 16 bit per channel (48 bit) format, will take up about 9 MB. This is the full image data as used within Photoshop, and determines the size reflected in the Info screen (after being modified to account for history, layers, masks, etc.). When you save the file, it will likely be much smaller, unless you intentionally choose an uncompressed TIFF format. A compressed TIFF file will save considerable space if it's an 8-bit image. GIF (which allows only 256 distinct colors) is an appropriate format for very small images (such as thumbnails) and text/line art, and saves a huge amount of space. JPEG is used for the final version of photographic images, and it saves considerable space over the original due to compression, but its compression is lossy, PNG has the potential to trump many of these formats, because it can accommodate 16-bit images, allows for transparency, and it is lossless, but it is not fully compatible with some existing web browsers (i.e., IE6).

  • IPhoto Calendar Cover - Image size

    Does anyone know the preferred size, resolution, and/or aspect ratio for images to be properly displayed on calendar pages and covers? Specifically, I am having trouble with the cover image for the "Modern Lines" template. I can't get my image to fit properly; in most cases it is too large and I can't reduce it any further using the iPhoto contextual menu that appears. But if I reduce the size of the image in Photoshop, then iPhoto still blows it up too large, and it again cannot be reduced sufficiently.
    Some documentation on recommended image sizes and resolutions would be appreciated!!
    thanks

    Nancy:
    That particular frame is about 13.4 x 10 inches. I wasn't about to determine the exact size but that gets you very close to including all of the cropped image when the Fit Photo to Frame is not selected. You don't need to crop it in Photoshop, just crop the original in iPhoto to a Custom size, 13.4 x 10.
    As far as resolution is concerned the larger the image the better, pixel wise. So always set your camera to the largest size and quality level possible. You can always downsize but you can't upsize.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Reducing image size loses sharpness

    BEFORE YOU LEAVE WITHOUT READING THIS WHOLE THING, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP BY ANSWERING ONE SIMPLE QUESTION:
    I have a background that has 8.5" x 11" external dimensions.  In the project bin, I'm also showing a layer (with transparent edges) that I've resized to 1" x 1.5".  When I double-click the background to put it on the screen, and then drag the layer  onto the screen, why doesn't it look like a small picture on top of a big one?  Instead, it's huge, and I have to drag it down to size with the move tool!
    ===========================================================================
    And now, the entire story:
    Running PSE9 under Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
    My project is a montage of stamp-sized images on a letter-size background, as in the attached -- commemorating the woman in the centerpiece.  I've stumbled though this kind of effort before with great success.  This time the small photos are coming out blurry, and it's because this time I've done one thing differently.
    In prior efforts, I recall somehow reducing the outside dimensions of an open file to about 2" x 3" before editing and finally adding it as a layer to the big background (using Move Tool to size it to fit), although during editing I was working with a reasonably-sized image and not a stamp (probably using command +).  The images in the final version were all sharp.   On this effort, however, my aging brain did not help me remember how to do it the same way, and I ended up working with the original photo, and then when I added it as a layer, I reduced it using the move tool -- very clumsy in view of the fact that the edited layer's image seemed to be larger than the canvas I was building, and the final images were blurry.
    I started reading Help on the subject of resizing, but that was way too much information for me to absorb before the end of the new year, and I'd like to finish the work in the next few days. (The attached photo IS the current project, and I whipped it out in a day, albeit blurry.)   I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a brute-force step-by-step to do it the way I've done it successfully before.

    The answer to your first question and the big one are very closely related. When you combine images, the resolution of the bottom (background) layer determines the resolution of the entire image. This means that if you have a low-res background (say, 72 ppi) and then you bring in high-res images (say, 300 ppi) the added content will be huge in comparison to the size of the overall image. When you scale it with the move tool you aren't doing yourself any favors if you make large changes that way.
    The best way to approach this is to make sure that all your images are at about the same resolution before you start (image>resize>image size). Also, make sure your background is not at a low resolution or the end result will print badly no matter how much time you spend combining things.

  • New Image Size and Resolution in CC

    Hi there.
    Ok, maybe i'm missing something, but how do i reduce the ppi's of a given image in the Photoshop CC? Changing it in the image size, in the Resolution field, it acomplish nothing. It logs an entry in the History panel, but nothing changes in the picture. Did Adobe changed how this works, or it's just a bug?
    Thank you.

    Try setting to real-world measurement, like inches or cm.
    Hi Charles, i think that change in cm/mm/in it's the only way to change the image ppi (in my case save/resample it to 108ppi). Can you confirm that this is correct?
    Anyway when i go to image size (new panel of CC) the w/h are:
    1) grey and always set in pixel with resample flagged.
    2) always set in inches with resample NON-flagged (also if my ruler unit is in Pixel).
    (and actually that is not new behavior. CS6 behaved same way when width and height were set to percent)
    In CS6 and CC i never seen w/h in percent  - where is my error?
    Many thanks!
