Developer 6.0 & 8i Personal Edition Coexsiting

I installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition with a database and then installed Oracle Developer 6.0 on the same machine. When I attempt to install the "demo database objects" for Developer 6.0 or log on from any of the Developer module login prompts, I
can't log into the database because developer is attempting to use the version of SQL*Plus (ver. 8.0.5.0.0) located at:
D:\Oracle\OraWin95\BIN\PLUS80W.EXE
instead of the version of SQL*Plus that comes with 8i Personal Edition (ver. 8.1.5.0.0)
D:\Oracle\Ora81\BIN\SQLPLUSW.EXE
The error received from the 8.0.5.x version of SQL*Plus is:
ORA-12203: TNS:unable to connect to destination.
Directly calling the 8.1.5.x version and logging in is no problem. My
8.1.5.x database appears to be fine.
How do I reconcile this problem? I'm assuming that the use of two versions of SQL*Plus is the basis for these problems. If there are others that result from the coesitance of these two applications (8iPE and Dev60), please advise.
Thank you in advance.

I've installed the trial version of Developer 6.0, and even though the installer says Net 8 products have been installed, they are nowhere to be found in the start menu. I tried running n8a.exe in /bin directory, hoping that's the Net8 assistant, but that program just hangs.
So, in short, how do I run Net8 with Developer 6.0 trial ?
Thanks,
Stan

  • Personal edition vs standard edition

I am new to oracle and am planning on installing oracle (personal or standard) onto a standalone desktop in my cube for test and develop(and learn) on.
My company is currently using Enterprise on sperate database servers that eventually I will probably get access to as admin for database yet to designed.
So my question is why not just use standard edition for my test and development on instead of personal edit.? Since it is cheaper for standard.
Also what is min desktop necessary for a small test and devel database in either of the editions? I will be using NT 4.0.

the Oracle software that you have ,Personal Edition or otherwise has documentation about the features available in each version of the Server, enterprise, standard and Personal.
That should give you an idea whihc version is best for ur desktop.
Also you will find the system requrements for the installation .That should help.

  • Oracle Personal Edition Number Of Connections

How many connections can Oracle Personal Edition Support? We are looking to create some development test machines where we will need 10-20 connections per test server and we do not want to have to pay 10K+ per CPU for these machines.
Any idea if we can use Personal Edition to satisfy this need?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    >>Can you tel me how to increase this number in oracle 10g express???
Just modifying the processes parameter is sufficient. The sessions parameter will be adjusted automatically.
    SQL> alter system set processes=200 scope=spfile;
    SQL> shutdown immediate
SQL> startupFor more information, take a look at this [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1672879&#1672879]thread

  • Oracle Personal Edition and SQL dev. tool

I installed Oracle 10g Personal Edition on my laptop and want to use SQL Creator (SQL developer's tool/program - http://www.snefru.com/index.jsp) with it.
I'm trying to setup my SQL developers tool to connect to my local Oracle database and there is a connection wizard for the SQL program which prompts me:
    1.) "Select a JDBC driver..."
2.) "Enter Host name for the server that the database is located on...."
3.) "Enter Port number that the database is listening on...."
4.) "Unique SID of the database instance..."
How can I find out 1.) - 4.) for my specific, local database?
    Thanks in advance...

When you run SQL*Plus, what is the version number displayed:
    C:\>sqlplus
    SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.3.0 - Production on Tue Nov 22 17:11:44 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.
    Enter user-name:?
You woudl download the driver that matches with that release.
if you did the database install, chances are you already have the jdbc driver installed.
    Do you have a directry ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib ?
Do you have files like classes*.jar in that directory?
if you do you already have the jdbc driver files.

  • Difference Between Enterprise and Personal Editions?

    Hi All,
I want to install Oracle 9i on Window XP Pro. I am wondering what is the difference between the Enterprise Edition and the Personal Edition? Do they both come with the Enterprise Manager clients that I am used to using?
    Any advice much appreciated.

    Hi Alex,
You can get the information from the "doc" directory in the "disk1". If case you do not have it, I had copy it here for you. Hope it can help you to know more about the differences before choosing which one to install. I too have the tough time deciding until I came across this information.
Enterprise Edition: If you select this type, Oracle Universal Installer installs a preconfigured seed database, networking services, licensable Oracle Options, database environment tools, the Oracle Enterprise Manager framework of management tools, including Console, Management Server, and Intelligent Agent, Oracle utilities, and online documentation. It also installs those products most commonly used in data warehousing and transaction processing environments.
Standard Edition: If you select this type, Oracle Universal Installer installs a preconfigured seed database, networking services, Oracle Enterprise Manager framework of management tools, including Console, Management Server, and Intelligent Agent, and Oracle utilities.
Personal Edition: If you select this type, Oracle Universal Installer installs the same software as the Enterprise Edition installation type, but supports only a single user development and deployment environment that requires full compatibility with Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition.

  • Can't  loging to Designer Product in Oracle 8i Personal Edition

    HI YOU!
    Can you help me?
I have problems starting Oracle Designer 6.x in my pc Windows 98 and Personal Edition 8i.
I'm not in a LAN and I don't have the client installed.
I don't know the user systems for Designer, I prooved with the SYSTEM anad SYS user but I cant access to the product.
    Any idea?
    Do I requiere the client?.
    THANKS!
    DAVE.

I think you have to start again with your installation.
A few months ago, I installed Designer 6i r4.3 on my standalone Home Pc.
Installing Designer 6i r4.3 on you PC, with a local database, you need to do the following. I think it isn't difficult, but yu have to read the installation guides of these product carefully before installing!
Installing consist of the following main steps
    1. Install a certified database server, i.e. 8.1.7 or 9i. (And NOT personal 8i! You can download a copy from OTN).
    2. Install the Designer client in a DIFFERENT Oracle Home than the server
    3. Install the Designer Server on the Database server
    4. Install Developer
Do you have a PC with enough power? I need enough diskspace and memory (at least 256 MB, but 512 is much better!)

  • Personal Edition 8i

I have a question on proper installation of Perosnal Edition 8i, for Win 98. I was told that before I installed Personal Edition, I neededt to install Developer. When I went to the download page I saw that there was no Developer for Win 98, however there was one for NT. Is this what I need or am I way off. Or is Personal Edition 8i all I need for the proper setup.
When I tried to install the Persoal Edition 8i without Developer, I was getting a TNS error. I thought I setup the TNS file properly, but I guess not. Is there anything you can do to help me, like directions for proper setup. Any kind of help would be awesome. Peter

I went to the TNS files and made some changes
    po8.world =
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (PROTOCOL = TPC)
    (Host = localhost)
    (Port = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
This is the only file I changed, then I started the lintener with
    c:\ora95po\bin\tnslsnr.exe port=1521
and then started the database, when I went to connect to SQL Plus, it said It didn't connect and gave me a TNS error.
So I unistalled it and went to the registry and deleted it from there. I tried to re-installed it but it got stuck at 85% during the re-istallation.
    Any helpful hints

  • Personal Edition on Linux?

Can anyone explain why one can license Oracle Database (any version) Personal Edition on Windows Server but not on Linux? Both OSs are designed to support multiple users, are they not?
    Ref: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/editions.htm#BABDJGGI

So Oracle database Personal Edition does have meaning on Windows Server context but not on Linux Enterprise?
Many organizations I know use Red Hat Enterprise Server, or SuSE Enterprise Linux in ''dedicates user' mode. Not to mention those developers and consultants who want a supported environment for Oracle EE and *nix and have an enterprise Linux machine.
Running a single person consulting shop, I find the combination of RHES and Oracle PE totalling USD$650-700 for supported development is a lot easier to swallow than needing to go to a Oracle EE license for an added $50,000. (Too bad SE or XE do not support options like SPatial.)
Right now, the ONLY reason I have any Windows machine left in my shop is for Oracle PE.

I would like to get the latest edition of personal edition for Oracle's database product. (I am a complete and utter newbie.)
I have searched and searched and cannot find the link for a download. 11g or even 10g I am sure would be fine.
Can anyone send me a link or tell me how I can find personal edition?
For learning purpose, Oracle corp allows to all download the Enterprise Edition itself from the Oracle Technology Work. This is a free download which comes with development and sort of patch and/or bug fixes would require to purchase the paid support contract. If you are newbie , you just download the software from
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html#database
You can choose whatever edition you want to install from the installation media that you would download. There is no use as such to play with Personal Edition because many features are going to be working only on Enterprise Edition or on Standard Edition only.
Now, that said, if you want to purchase Personal Edition, this can be a very good investment as it would let you use the paid support portal MOS(My Oracle Support) as well. But as mentioned already, its only for Windows.

  • Personal Edition for Linux

The personal edition of Oracle database server is only available for the Windows platform. Given the Oracle's increased platform support and even having their own version of Linux, is there any plan making personal edition available for the Linux OS as well ?
this is not a technical question - or using XE or using OTN license for development - etc, I am simply asking if Personal Edition become available for the Linux platform. (having a 64bit and/or 32bit 11gR2 personal edition running under X distro of Linux - for example).
Maybe an Oracle employee can answer.
    thank you.

    ...Neither 10g nor 11g have a personal edition...Are you really sure ?
All of the various editions available are free to download and use for personal learning.Personal Edition is for business usage.
Personal Edition is a kind of "substract" of Enterprise Edition, same components, same core, except the license terms are very differents (the usage for business), and installation type is available only for Windows. An SR won't help for that.
Find out more in the installation type of the Installation Guide :

It has been discussed many times over here, enhancement request already submitted multiple times, suggested multiple times here or there :

  • How to connect to Oracle 8i Personal Edition from another app like TOAD?

I downloaded Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition; and the download went like a breeze.
I installed Oracle and can connect to the database using SQL*Plus without specifying Host Name.
I am very much familiar with TOAD (Tool for Oracle Application Developer). But I am unable to connect to Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition database from TOAD. I get a ORA-12541: TNS:no listener error when I give the global database name as the database name.
Can anybody help me? Your help will be appreciated very much.

SQL*PLus does not use the listener to connect to Oracle8i Personal Edition. That is why you are able to connect with SQL*Plus and not TOAD when the listener is not started.

  • Tried the link for 8i Personal Edition

I wrote yesterday that I was looking for the Oracle 8i Personal Edition download. Someone posted a link, which appeared to work at first. I clicked the link. The Terms Of Use came up and I completed it and Clicked on Accept. Then it brings up the download selection screen for 1/2 second. Then the browser displays a blank screen while it searches for a site it never finds. What is going on? I really NEED a copy of 8i Personal Edition. Any advice?

    Supporting your statement:
Oracle Database Personal Edition includes all the features and options of the Enterprise Edition. It is available for Windows only. Which I think is sad as there are developers on Linux who would not mind buying a license for PE if it was available on Linux.
(Hey Oracle ... Windows is not the only developer environment around ... hint hint)
According to the Install manual (picking on the 10gR2 install), at in chapter 3 section 4 in Table 3-2 we note the second step of install using the Database Installation CD states
    Select Installation Type
Select Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Personal Edition, or Custom. Click Next
