Developing iOS applications on Windows 7

Hello, I’m an avid programmer who is keen to learn and keen to develop, but I’ve encountered one major issue. I can’t install or run Xcode on a Windows operating system. I was wondering are there any alternative methods to developing iPhone applications on Windows. If there are any information would be appreciated.
If all else fails I’ll download OS virtualisation software.

People say something about Microsoft and Apple and I think I have something to share with you all.
@lukehicks: I am also an avid programmer who is keen to learn and design and develop software, may be not more than you, but I am sure not less than you.
I have more than 20 years of experience in programming in Windows with C/C++ and in the last decade: C# and .NET Framework and I am also a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer for Micorosft .NET. Java and VB are the other two languages that I know well. I am also an author, writing technical books (in Persian Language; I live in IRAN); so I used to read books and articles alot.
When Apple released iPad I saw it in the TV for the first time. I thought It was a very good device for reading books, As I used to read eBooks on my PC. But I didn't want to buy an iPad, since it was expensive. So I decided to buy an eBook reader. After searching a lot and looking all the abailable devices at that time, I found iPad as a revolutionary device, specially for me as someone who used to read books alot. And It really was, as I have not take a paper book in my hands since iPad.
It is more than a couple of years that I bought an iPad; the first Apple device I have bought in my life. I have never seen any Apple devices as a buyer before. And that's it: It changed my life.
Believe it or not, having an iPad in my hands, made me so curious about developing and running apps on it. And those days I was exactly in the state you are in now.
After a few months (may be 2 or more), I lastly decided to buy a Mac. And I did; an iMac 21.5" Late 2009. Started to learn programming in the Mac environment.
But I couldn't leave all my background in Windows programming. So I brought Windows to my iMac using Bootcamp.
I don't want to say all things that happen to me, but the net result is:
Working in OS X is so much better, safer, easier, more reliable, and more joyful than Windows. I am sure you have heard about that, but you must experience it to know well. Just think why people working with Macs and iPhones and iPads, don't want to go back to Windows (or any other environment they used to work with).
For me, today:
1. I have and iMac 21.5", a MacBook Pro 17", an iPad, an iPad 2 WiFi/3G, an Apple TV 2 and NO PCs (I think these are not enough for me, but I just say this to show that I don't use Windows PCs anymore).
2. I have transfered all my works from Windows environment to Mac. So I don't have Windows on Bootcamp and not even on virutal machine.
3. All the programming I do, is in Xcode; I really don't want to go back to those days of Visual Studio (The best development environment for me 3 years ago).
After more than 20 years of working with computers, I think I am born again 2 years ago, as the meaning of computers and all my view about programming has been changed. May be it's due to the fact that I was so focused on Microsoft technologies and never looked around. In fact, I was deep in Microsoft tools and design patterns in development.
As a developer point of view, just know that there are a lot intresting things to learn in Apple way of designing and implementing software. Cocoa is a collection of very well designed object-oriented frameworks which is used to develop software on OS X. It's little brother, Cocoa Touch is used in iOS. So learning one, makes learning the other so much easier. If you come to the world of Apple, you can develop for both iOS and OS X.
There are alot of resources out there, but if you want some help to pass the learning curve, or to know where to start, you can count on me.
Sorry to talk so much. I Just want to say, If something is good, it is good. don't try to attack it without enough knowledge. Apple is selfish or not; it doesn't matter. Apple creates good products that make our lives easier.
I just recommend you and all people like you to buy a Mac.

I agree. In my opinion Sun has done a horrible job documenting all this madness for the average developer just starting out with this stuff. There is the CLDC, J2ME, Personal Java, J2ME-WTK, MIDP, MIDP-FCS ... maddness. Anyway after sorting through it all for a few days, I think the answer to your question you will need to use Personal Java for WinCE and the Sharp Zaurus, and MIDP for PalmOS for the palm. Jeode seems to be the most common and best Personal Java implementation and it is basically the JDK1.2.2 (or is it 1.1.8) that is designed to run on WinCE and Embeddix (such as Lineo on the Zaurus). You program it just like you would a 1.1.8 application and then you can test it by running pjava.exe which is included in the personal java 3.1 download from Sun. There is also a program called JavaCheck that will ensure that your app will run properly in PersonalJava. As for the Palm, MIDP for PalmOS is a 574K program that installs on your palm device. You then use the J2ME-WTK (wireless toolkit) to build a JAR/JAD file and you use the MIDP API to write the code.

  • Developing Java Applications for Windows CE

    Hello,
I hope this sub forum is right. So I must develop a Java Application for Windows CE. I read something about J2ME, but I think this is only for Mobilephone and Windows CE supports AWT. So I tried just some simple forms with J2ME.
Can anybody tell me how I develop java Applications for Windows CE? Can I use Eclipse or must I use another IDE?
Realy I developed Swing 5-6 Month but I have no idea how I develop Java Applications for Windows CE.
    Thanks a lot for helping...

The MIDP for Palm OS 1.0 requires Palm OS v3.5 or higher to run. According to your error message, the emulator is not running v3.5 or higher. Try to get hold of a ROM image with a later version. I've run it with v4.0 of the OS and it works.

  • Developing desktop applications for windows

    Hello
I am currently doing a final year project which is an encryption software for the company that i did my placement with. i have done the core part of the program but i need to know how to make it look professional. i need to be able to have it as an installable desktop application (Only for Windows), with an icon provided by me which is used when files are encrypted using the application. i have no idea how to achieve this effect and i seek knowledge.
thanks in advance for your help

There are many levels of professional software in my opinion. There is software that works, meets the requirements and doesn't crash. That's professional in the sense that it does what it is supposed to and does it well. People pay for that even if its green-screen non-GUI based. TONS of stuff still working/written for non-GUI environments and plenty pay for it.
When related to Java and desktop applications, I feel there is only truly one real way to brag you have written a professional software suite. That is when your application not only adheres to what it should do, but provides a means to extend it without having to wait for major releases, and the UI is VERY consistent, not cluttered, not tons of buttons/menus/dialogs/windows all over the place and the underlying coce of the app is truly written well to make good use of areas of Java such as resources (properly closing files when not using them, returning DB connections when done, using WeakReference of nulling out refs to objects no longer needed). It is very very easy to cause a memory leak in a java application if you do not watch at all times for object refs that are left hanging.
By extensibility, I mean providing some means of plugging in new pieces of code to enhance the product or fix existing issues (bugs) and providing a simple update facility that can either auto-update, or allow an install to add the update.
It is exactly these reasons that keep me plugging away on my plugin engine (www.sourceforge.net/projects/genpluginengine) and UI framework built around plugins. While the engine is almost done and is very similar to the Eclipse plugin engine, the UI framework will be ongoing for some time. Making a very professional read-to-run-out-of-the-box free/open-source framework built on high-quality well tested plugins is not easy to accomplish with a couple hours a week and only me and one other doing it. I would love to get more help shortly, adding tons of great features that all developers could benefit from, and soon I will start asking various java boards for help, see if anyone is interested in contributing. The goal is a professional looking, solid underlying code, well/highly tested UI framework that can be used by anyone to quickly build their specifics and not worry about the more common UI application stuff such as file i/o choosers, help, preferences, authentication, access levels/rights, views and editors, and more. With a 3rd project working to add tons of Swing UI components, the final UI framework will provide a number of high-quality components like rounded/shaded/gradient filled panels with shadowing, calendar/date pickers, wizards, and more, again all highly tested to ensure ultimate quality.
If you are interested, feel free to post back to this response with email, or join up at the above mentioned sourceforge project and start contributing to the mail list.

  • I am a beginner programmHow do I start developing mobile applications for iOS?

I want to start building mobile applications for use on my iPhone.  I have little to no experience in software development.  What do I need to do to get started?

Learning to program and then becoming familiar with xcode and objective-C is a long road to travel.  If you google for xcode tutorials and objective-c tutorials, you might find some.  Also, books is another way become familiar with programming for iOS and OSX.  Go to Amazon and search for xcode 4 and for objective-c and Cocoa programming - look for the books with high ratings.
For example, one of the links at the right lead to the following helpful post:

  • Which is Adobe product to be used for developing iPAD(IOS) applications that support PDF edit on the

    Question:
We would like to know if LiveCycle ES 8.0 supports development of applications for IOS devices like iPAD,...
Our requirement is to build applications that opens PDF on an iPAD, let the user edit and save the PDF.
If not, which other Adobe product does?
    Thanks,
    Murali

If you want to add text as comments, then a form created in Acrobat (Acroform) will work in Adobe Reader for iOS. It does not support forms created in LiveCycle Designer (XFA). There are also other PDF viewers that support Acroforms and commenting. So you don't need to create an application, just documents (PDF forms) that can be opened in an existing application (PDF viewer) that supports forms and commenting.
If you want to edit/add text that is part of the regular page contents of an existing PDF, I'm not aware of anything on iOS that does that and I don't think Adobe has anything that will help you develop an app that will.

  • JavaOne 2012: JavaFX on iOS, Android and Windows 8 Metro???

Besides wonderful demos on JavaOne 2012 I'was wondering one big thing: Where are the news from JavaOne about JavaFX (embedded) running on iOS (ready to AppStore), Android and Windows 8 metro????

Thanks Adrian for that information! Another guy who spoke with people from Oracle told us via twitter that's not a technical and not a political problem! But what you say ("management has not deciced yet...") sounds like a political problem. I can't believe that Oracle does not believe in a developer demand for iOS and android support?!
Yeeees, many many developer are looking for a good(!) technology to develop crossplatform mobile applications for phones and tablets. currently there is no really good technology. As a developer you have to decide to choose the native way - so you have to develop 3 times the same app for iOS, android and windows 8 -/ metro, or choose the HTML5 way. Web apps written in HTML(5), javascript and CSS are good for small and simple things. But the main problem with web apps is the really poor rendering performance, especially of Android devices! Developing web apps with HTML frameworks like JQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, Phonegab/Cordova and so on doesn't make much fun. It's really a hard and time consuming job to develop native looking apps with HTML5 which works performant too...
So what we really really need is a real crossplatform technology like Java and JavaFX! JavaFX for iOS, Android and Metro would be a killer technology! Java (Swing) is not really often used to develop main stream applications...Anybody know a popular application like Photoshop, Word, Firefox, Angry Bird, Evernote, ... written in Java Swing??? No, Java is only used for business applications and server code (J2EE).
So if Oracle invests many dollers in pushing JavaFX as the new platform for modern user interfaces, the most important thing - IMO - is to support modern operation systems like iOS, Android and Metro. There are so many young developers who developing innovativ apps for the iPhone - all these developers are Oracle clients of the future if they would use Java(FX)! The Java language is simple and JavaFX uses modern technologies like CSS and XML - technologies which are known by young developers.
So Oracle, please show us your stuff from your labs, publish Java embedded for iOS, Android and Metro.
The most important thing for me concerning JavaOne 2012 was any anncounement of "JavaFX on iOS, ....". But I was really disappointed to hear no single word of this topic...
So Oracle please speak to your developers and clients, speak with us and stop this annoying secretiveness...
    Best regards,
    Tobi

  • Cannot install AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application on Windows 7 64 bit

Our team is experiencing consistent failure to install our AIR-developed application on Windows 7 64 bit. It fails to install, but apparently eventually can be installed only after a complete uninstallation of AIR and subsequent install attempts are made.
The following suggestion from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403150.html has also been tried, but errors persist:
Installing an AIR application displays the error message: "Sorry an error has occurred. The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author." (Windows Vista / Windows 7)
This error may occur during installation if the user has turned off User Account Control (UAC) operating system feature and is a standard or restricted user. From Control Panel, Open UAC and enable it. A reboot maybe required, once complete, re-try the installation.
The error messages are as follows:
    Name of Our Application
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while updating the application. Try updating it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author.
    Error #0
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer from the application author.
This is a boxed product which is slated to ship very soon. The QA team is rejecting the builds because of this issue, which puts the entire project in jeopardy. Timely help is appreciated.
Here is a sanitized, excerpted section from the end of the install log (it is extremely long):

Thanks very much for keeping this issue alive.
    Let me restate the issue:
We have a AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application. Installing the application for the very first time seems to work. Any uninstall or update after that runs into issues on the problematic Windows 7 64 bit machine. The installer logs all point the finger to Windows Installer having problems writing to the temp directory.
We've gone through many, many things trying to resolve this, including resetting administrative access to the temp directory and flushing the temp directory out entirely. I'm reporting this news secondhand, so it's not possible for me to directly relate the exact measures taken, step-by-step. The ONLY thing that reliably worked for running and installing updates on this AIR application was the following:
    1) Create a new administrative level user.
    2) Log in with that user.
    3) Disable firewalls.
    4) Run the updater.
    5) Log back in as normal user, delete temporary user.
if the user account created in step 1 is not deleted in step 5 and is used to attempt a further update or uninstall, it will fail. This seems to tell me that AIR is able to utilize the temp folder via Windows Installer correctly only once. After that, it dirties this directory somehow and is unable to use/write to it, and subsequent uninstalls/updates fail with error 0.
Again, the failure all show msi issues writing to the temp directory. They result in an "Error 0" alert dialog in AIR.

  • FM Radio Application for Windows 8

I am trying to develop a simple FM Radio Application for Windows 8 phones. I found one class but it says it will not work for devices targeting windows 8. Can some one please help.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/microsoft.devices.radio.fmradio(v=vs.105).aspx

It's been a long time since I last answered an FM radio question so I might be forgetting some details but basically...
In Windows Phone 7 timeframe the FM radio hardware was part of the requirements but for Windows Phone 8 FM radio hardware was optional and, in fact, the FM Radio drivers were not available until build 8.0.10322.
I cannot recall if the restriction regarding FMRadio API for Windows Phone 8 targeted applications mentioned in the MSDN documentation, is enforced during submission to the store but I know it is possible to use the APIs in a Windows Phone 8 targeted project
during development (...requires: ID_CAP_MEDIALIB_AUDIO I believe.)

Since Forms 6 was never certified on Vista, I will assume you don't care about using Oracle Support. If that's the case, getting Forms 6 to work on Win 7 would likey require similar steps as you took to getting it to work on Vista.
At minimum, you would need to do the following:
    1. Start with Forms/Reports 6.0.8.11 (6i Release 2)
    2. Install the latest (last) patch (#17), bring the version to 6.0.8.26
    3. It may be necessary to relax or disable Windows UAC
    4. To run the executables, you have to right click on them and select Run As Administrator in order for them to work properly.
THE ABOVE IS NOT A SUPPORTED CONFIGURATION
Forms 6.x was desupported years ago. If you have not already begun to do so, you should probably be working on a migration plan in order to get you to a supported version. The latest version is 11.1.1.3, so you are far behind. All versions newer than 6.x are entirely web based. This means that you will no longer be able to use the Forms runtime on the client machines. Client machines will require an Oracle certified browser and JRE in order to run Forms. Certification information for Fusion Middleware 11 (includes Forms 11) can be found here:

  • Preventing help files being added to start menu after installing an application in windows 8.1 enterprise

    Hi Guys
when we install an Application in windows 8 family, we see that in addition of Application executable file, user manuals (.chm) and PDF & other files related to that App are added to start menu (when we click down Arrow which shows all programs) and
so the start menu gets quit messy.
is there any settings to make only applications executable file be added to start menu & prevent other types of files related to that App being added here?
    thanks in advanced

    Hi John,
This issue is related to the programs package we installed.
    • An installation package contains all of the information that the Windows Installer requires to install or uninstall an application or product and to run the setup user interface.
    • The developer can specify installation context, and based on these properties, Windows Installer automatically redirects the values of folder properties and registrations to locations.
    • The shortcut is added to the profile by these context
We could right click these file and could find out they are the shortcut mentioned above.
For more information about Windows Installer, please refer to the following article.

I have an LabVIEW project I have developed in a Windows environment.  I can create an Application (.exe) using the Build Specification -> Application Builder which works fine on the development platform.
I now want to distribute the application to a Linux Environment.  The OS is openSUSE v10.3 (with GNOME).  I have downloaded the two rpm files needed for the run-time engine and installed them, as per here:http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/97E14BA3E0C14A89862572C300567733?opendocument&node=13207...
Now, the question is; how do I create an Application in Windows which can be used on the Linux Box?  According to the Application Builder instructions, it's simply a case of removing the .exe extension in the Target File Name options, however, this gives an error "Invalid Extension."
If I do create an exe and manually remove the extention is doesn't work on the Linux enviroment (typing ./application).
Has anyone had experiance of this?
    Many Thanks for Any Help,
    Oliver

LabVIEW Run-time Engine Version 8.2.1 for Linux

The cross-platform nature of LabVIEW refers more to the code than to the executable.
LV (given the appropriate development version) can compile the same source code into a Windows (using LV for Windows), Linux (using LV for Linux) or Mac (using LV for Mac) program.
This means you will still have three versions of your program, one for each platform.
If you want to distribute VIs (without block diagrams), you will also need different versions of these as without the block diagram, they cannot be re-compiled for a new platform.
