Development or Deployment Configuration Management

Forte Users:
I have been using Forte for awhile and have experienced various levels
of pleasure and pain with regard to configuration management. I have
been witness to various strategies for keeping things clean and smooth.
I was at Forte Forum to hear talk and witness some products to help
address issue, but still have only a foggy notion about how to do things
in the here and now.
My request is to gather from some outside chatter and see what other
people are doing. How are people safely managing repositories and
classes in the development environment? Once deployed? Is there a daily
or weekly practice or checklist that addesses configuration issues? Are
people putting together automated processes?
We are actually working to integrate with PVCS today to take care of
some things, but I am really interested in knowing what is working out
there without special tools. Please reply with any insight that may be
shared.
Thanks in advance.

**Any opinions you might see up above are surely mine and USAA has
nothing to do with them.**

don't underestimate the need for cm. someone should find the time to
set the ground rules now. otherwise it's going to be a huge mess later
on. here are some things to consider:
o determine your application's package structure.
o determine your development environment's directory structure (e.g.
classes in ~/apps/classes, source in ~/apps/src ...).
o take the time to stub-out the interfaces between the different
layers of the application and your ejbs. this is really important if
you've vertically separated programming tasks and will allow each team
to write their stuff without regard to other teams. as each team
completes their slice they should fit together seamlessly as long as
the interface hasn't changed. this will take some time up-front, but
it's definitely worth it.
o if you really need to share files (veps...) setup a shared dir or
something. if you're going to share these types of files, the second
point is critical.

Just wondering if any of guys could point me to a paper, book, or any doc
that could help figure out how to organize the dev environment. We're about
5 developers and we need to setup the directories and files to be able to
share EJB jar file and simple java classes (helper classes) through
SourceSafe. We're prototyping and right now and none of us has really time
to look at the CM carefully.
I guess another complication is that we're using Visual Cafe to develop and
would like to share .vep files as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (I would hate to reinvent the
wheel...)

  • How to deploy configuration manager client package to a query based collection

    Hi
I have created one OU based collection. Now i wants to deploy client package to this collection so that the client automatically get installed, whenever a new machine added to the OU and so on to the collection.
But the issue is with configuration manager client package deployment,as we can't deploy the default configuration package to the collection(Deploy option is grayed out). For this i created a new configuration manager client package and deployed this package
    to the query based collection.
Now when a new machine added to this collection, the client did not appear to deploy on this machine. Please help

If you want all the devices in the OU to get the client, you can use a Computer Startup Script to deploy it.  Everybody just uses Jason's since it does everything and is well documented.

    I hope that helps,

  • Configuration management (LO-CM) used with Variant configuration (LO-VC)

    Hi
I am new to SAP, working with Variant configuration (LO-VC).
I wish to enforce configuration management during development of a new Variant configurator.
Would Configuration management (LO-CM) work together with Variant configuration (LO-VC)?
My expectation is that SAP Configuration management (LO-CM) will work similar to solutions like e.g. MsVisualSourceSafe, SubVersion, CVS, IBM/Rational ClearCase etc. in the software development domain.
    best regards Henrik

    Hi Amber
Thanks a lot for answer, and please apologize my late response.
I am not confused by the term 'configuration', being used in two different meanings.
    (1) Variant configuration (VC) is the dicipline of creating product variants by making a set of choises from the characteristics describing the product. A complete and consistent set of choises is a 'configuration'.
    (2) Configuration Management in the 'traditional' software development meaning: Software Configuration Management (SCM). E.g. Microsoft VisualSourceSafe, IMB/Rational ClearCase, Subversion etc. are examples of tools used for the kind of SCM I wish to apply to VC models.
My confusion is whether the SAP CM that I can read about in the SAP online help, is similar to traditional SCM, and whether it can be applied to VC models.
I wish to apply SCM to a VC model. All the objects that together make up the VC model may then each exist in various versions (version control). A complete set of the objects (in a given version) make up a configuration of the VC model.
What is achieved is : you can control the development of VC model in just the same way that all serious software is under the control of SCM. This will allow an evolution of the VC model, like e.g. version 1.0 is released in January, then version 1.1 is released in June. A major upgrade of the model may become version 2.0 in December etc. The 'source code' (the objects) of each of the versions can be retrieved at any time from the SCM system. Also with SCM several developers may work on the same VC model at the same time, and merge their individual work into the same model.
This is very different from todays VC model development. In todays VC model development, only one version exists, that is 'todays version'. Any change to the model is released immediately, and you can undo model changes only if you remember what it was like a little while ago.
We do develop and test VC models in one SAP system, and then move them to the production system. This is however still very far from the benefits of SCM.
    best regards

  • Software Configuration Management for ABAP Development ?

    Hi,
we are a software company selling a Data Capture Solution.
For this, we are currently in the process to develop an interface for transferring the extracted data into a customer's SAP R/3 system.
Since we want to develop this interface following certain software engineering principles, we are looking for a way to solve certain simple common Software Configuration Management issues, such as:
    - Object Versioning (Similar to file versioning in classic software development): That means being able to:
-- Keep track WHO changed WHAT WHEN and WHY?
-- Revert to a former version of an object (e.g. when the fix of a former defect must be revoked for some reason)
-- Keep track which changes have been made for a certain Change Request (NOT meaning SAP Change   Requests, but Change Request for our interface development)
    - Label a certain version state as 'released' or 'tested' or whatever
    - Perform a kind of 'Branching' (Classical Software Configuration Management task), e.g. when we   release a version of our interface and start the development of a new version, we must open a   'Maintenance Branch' of our released version parallel to the ongoing development of the future release.
When I say 'Objects', I mean everything being concerned when developing something within R/3; that can be ABAP programs, forms, tables (structure and content(!)), etc.
We are using an SAP System version ECC 5.0 for development; as for now, we have come to the conclusion to use the versioning that comes with the Transforms, although they do not really cover the above requirements as we would like to.
Is there anybody out there who had the same idea and solved it somehow?
My impression is that in the SAP world, classical Software Configuration Management is not a part of the way of thinking; and that development for SAP R/3 has little in common with classical software development.
But maybe there is an add-on or some hidden features of NetWeaver or anything that can solve these issues.
Hope is the last to die...
Thank you very much for any feedback,
    Regards,
    Jörg

Thank you very much for your answers!
    @Pushkar:
    No this is not exactly what I meant;
What we want to do is a kind of classical configuration management or at least version control of
development objects like ABAP programs, table definitions, table data etc. that are contained within our SAP development system.
It's not about version management of external documents imported into SAP.
I know that there is a kind of version control via Transports, but this does not cover all classical version control mechanisms; what we are missing there is
    - the possibility of reverting to an older version of an 'object'
    - Branching / Merging mechanisms
    - the possibility to choose which changes I want to release with which transform and which objects
    - view differences between arbitrary versions of an object
I was hoping there is maybe a kind of 'add-on' or maybe even a built-in tool that provides classical version control mechanisms or something similar.
    Thank you for further help,
    Regards,
    Jörg

  • Deploying Office 365 Pro Plus using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1

    Hello,
I am trying to deploy Office 365 Pro Plus to my client machines (more than 100) via. System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1. It will use one administrator account for installation. But as per the licensing, we can install Office for up to 5 PCs/Macs
and 5 more Windows tablets/iPads with one Office 365 Pro Plus licenses. If this is the case, then I cannot install Office 365 Pro Plus with one admin account to my 100+ machines, as it will violate the licenses of O365 Pro Plus.
So, what is the alternative approach?
    Thanks
    Raj

If this is the case, then I cannot install Office 365 Pro Plus with one admin account to my 100+ machines, as it will violate the licenses of O365 Pro Plus.
    Hi,
    this is incorrect.
There is no licensing restriction/control for the *installation* account at all, the licensing is related to who is *using* Office365ProPlus *after* installation is performed. This control, is implemented by the Microsoft Account, or OrgID, used to sign-in/activate
    to Office365 when *using* Office365ProPlus.

  • How do I get past ES4 Install Failure during Component Deployment in Configuration Manager?

I have done several installs of LiveCycle, but can't seem to get passed this error.  I am installing a fresh copy of ES4 on a Windows 2008 R2 server using the JBOSS partial turnkey install.  I have it configured to connect to a  SQL Server database instead of the turnkey MySql database.  LiveCycle installs and then Configuration Management starts successfully.  I am able to get past the database initialization.  The following step is the Component deployment.  All the JAR files deploy correctly, but then it hangs when trying to deploy the LCA files.  I have had a similar problem before and increasing the Transaction Timeout in the application server configuration solved it.  I increased the Transaction Timeout without any success.  Doing this a couple of the LCAs deployed while the others did not.

  • Help needed with Patch Deployment using Configuration Manager 2007

I am trying to figure out how to deploy many patches built into a Deployment Management and Deployment Packages.  For the life of me I can not find with in the program where to push the packages out to A) a group of Client, or B) a single client for
    testing.
Thank you for your input.  I am in front of the console now pulling my hair out.
    Again thank you

    Jason,
I have been doing that for 2 day now, reading the book, and technet.  This is why I came here in hopes someone could give me a better idea than what I can find else where.
Maybe someone has some ideas on a certain log file on the server or a desktop to get some ideas?
    Thank you
    Robert
Some links to step-by-step guides, should help you:

    Don,
Thank you for this info.  Very much appreciated.
If anyone else has any good info, please post.
    Thank you

  • Verifying Server Connection in Configuration Manager

I am trying to deploy ES3 on Weblogic 10.3.6 and am having a problem with Configuration Manager. When I Verify Server Connection, the CM spins for a bit then comes back with a ALC-LCM-100-011 error, Cannot Connect to Application Server.
In the CM log there is this:
com.adobe.livecycle.cdv.CDVInternalException[ALC-LCM-100-011]: Cannot connect to application server.
Application server host or port may be invalid.
Caused by: java.io.IOException: Unable to resolve 'weblogic.management.mbeanservers.domainruntime'. Resolved 'weblogic.management.mbeanservers'
I know the info is correct, in fact when I intentionally use a wrong password or account the CM immediately returns that the info is wrong.
My WL architecture has a WL domain with distributed development and staging managed servers (no clusters). The Admin server is standalone, as are the two managed servers. I am attempting to install on one of the managed servers.
    Any hints here? Thanks!

See the link http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/10.0/PrepareInstallSingle/WS624e3cba99b79e1229e967b2 12eea97f932-7ffe.html . It has the below text :-
Two primary startup scenarios are available for WebLogic:
Using Node Manager and configuring through the Administration Server (recommended)
Directly starting the Managed Servers with configurations in the StartManagedWebLogic scripts
To use the automatic configuration features of Configuration Manager (the recommended option), you must use the Node Manager and configure through the Administration Server.
If you are directly starting the Managed Servers, you can still use the automatic configuration features of Configuration Manager. However, you must manually enter the Configuration Manager changes into the StartManagedWebLogic scripts. For the appropriate steps, see Installing and Deploying LiveCycle for WebLogic .
I think, if you want to use configuration manager for authomatically configuring the managed servers, you have to supply the admin server port while verifying the connection for weblogic server.

i'm a PhD student at the [VLBA Lab in Magdeburg|http://www.vlba-lab.de/] and i would like to share my thoughts about my research topic '[Model Driven Configuration Management|http://www.vlba-lab.de/en/Home/Research/Topics/ModelDrivenConfigurationManagement/index.html]' with you. Model-Driven Configuration Management (MDCM), means using MDE techniques to implement the requirements concerning the configuration of IT system landscape and IT infrastructures.
    Problem:
While the capabilities of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) have been realized in many parts of software development, MDE support for IT system landscapes and IT infrastructures is barely adequate. Although common frameworks for Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) propose predefined artifacts and methods for this purpose, the transition between the design stage and the operating stage of software takes place manually. Time-consuming discovery procedures capture the current software configuration after the transition, store it in configuration databases and allow further analysis on the basis of reconstructed models.
    Objective:
The identified gap between EAM and IT operations shall be closed by model-driven configuration management so that
       1. the deployment of software in an IT system landscape and
       2. the configuration of the underlying IT infrastructure can be accomplished automatically and traceably during both the initial transition and later migration.
During my research i found similiar approaches for using Model-Driven Engineering techniques either for EAM or for IT operations, but not a combination of both and so my question is, if you have any expierences in using MDE for configuring your IT system landscape on the basis of EAM artifacts?
    Thanks,
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian;
Your quest seems to be very interesting.
Well I am not sure if you have SAP exprience. Well I am Technology consutant and may be I will try to make sence of your reserch from SAP point of view.
What I understand from (Model Driven arch) MDE in SAP is a traction (program) called "SPRO" . It allows you to configure the already developed allications (in ABAP). This configuration are stored in Database and then allow further analysis. As you explained.
Also a technology that might intrest you would be BC sets. It performs predefine recomended configurations for your applications and asks for your inputs if required.
Regarding your specific area of requirement i.e. automation for IT infra configuration ; i generally feel that developers always get all the tools to get their job easily done...  But administrator never get their due share of attention for ease of use of their tools.

  • Where can I find the configuration manager?

    Hello,
I have a WebDynpro project that uses a web service provided from a third party software. The web service connection requires a username and password.
I was looking how to place a property file that can hold the username and password, independent of the sca file used to deploy the webdynpro application.
I researched over the internet, and found out that this is possible by using a configuration manager. Im kinda clueless where this configuration manager is? how to put properties to it, and read the properties to a webdynpro DC project.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.
    regards,
    arnold

    Hi,
Create a property File in the folder
src\Components\<ComponentName>, via the navigator in the NetWeaver Developer studio.
    To access
// access the deployable object part of the application you are currently in.
    WDDeployableObjectPart currentAppPart = wdThis.wdGetAPI().getComponent().getApplication().getDeployableObjectPart();
// access the property file under the deployable object part.
    IWDConfiguration cicConfig = WDConfiguration.getConfigurationByName (currentAppPart, "<name of property file>");
// get the string value of the property.
    String cssKeyValue = cicConfig.getStringEntry ("<key of the property sheet>");
Rebuild and deploy the application. The property file of your application is created as a property sheet in:
    Visual Admin-Configuration Adapter/webdynpro/local/<project name>/Applications/<application name>/Property sheet.

  • SolMan and CMMI Configuration Management

    Hi
We are looking into implementing CMMI level 3 in our organisation.
One of the main points is to use SolMan for Configuration Management which seems obvious.
Does any of you "out there" have any experiences and answers/ideas to the following topics:
    - which CI's have you identified?
    - how are versions of the CI's managed?
    - how are you managing baselines and is there any demand for a baseline "rollback" in CMMI?
And how are you handling Requirements Management and Requirements Development in SAP Solution Manager? Especially the bidirectional traceability
Have you found any litterature on the subject?
Thanks in advance - all help is welcome
    Peter

I don't have a good answer to your question, but chose to reply because I'm also in search of Architectural and Operational standards and practices for WLS. Everything I see in terms of Oracle and 3rd party documentation, including the product itself, seems geared toward the developers and optimized for for their needs and desires. Precious little advice in terms of best practices for deploying and hosting production services on this platform. I'm just a lowly SA and need things explained like I'm retarded.
Obviously common sense will have to end up addressing most of this, but why must we re-invent the wheel?
FWIW in regards to your question, we don't rebuild our environments from scratch at every deployment. We don't even delete configurations and components at deployment. (Although I've heard that's a recommended practice, I never get a straight answer for "why?" From this I'm left to conclude that; what, WLS is unreliable, unstable? Until I hear a good reason why I should be deleting everything all the time I'll stick with my instincts.) As for configuration management, we're stuck in the stone age I'm afraid; although high on my list is to start reverse-engineering our prod config into scripted form so we can do just what you're explaining.
At deployment, for every object we check for it, add it if it's missing, and re-set the configs. For all application deployments we undeploy/redeploy. All in WLST scripts that live in our version repo, natch. We could be doing it totally wrong, but it works so there's little impetus to change it. We're also handling an OSB deployment in a similar fashion, but that's done with a heavily modified-for-portability import.py script w/ ant.
