Development Performance Guidlines

Could you please send me information if you know about guidlines for J2EE developers regarding performance.
We will develop client desktop application running in browser and communicating with application server BEA WebLogic.

do you mean tips for better performance?
Yes:
use the business delegate pattern
use the session facade pattern
avoid lots of round trips (it's better to send a small number of large messages than a large number of small messages)
have the client keep track of most/all of the application's state
use lazy-instantiation or proxies where appropriate
Read:
Patterns of Enterprise Applications (Fowler)
J2EE Design Patterns
EJB Design Patterns
the GoF patterns book
Best Practices:
write your code to be maintainable and very loosely coupled
have a DBA tune your table structures and SQL
use a performance tuning tool to spot performance troubles
tune those areas specified by your tool (the loosely coupled nature of your implementation should allow you to make these changes rather easily)
don't pre-emptively tune: you'll spend too much time chasing things that aren't actual performance problems.

  • LR3 "Extra Processing in Develop" Performance Problem

I have been investigating a specific LR3 performance problem.  It may explain a small subset of the problems people have reported in the "Why is LR3 So Slow?" thread.   I'm starting this thread to focus on this particular problem.  I hope others will confirm/refute/refine my findings.
    The Problem
In Develop, when I make an adjustment, normally the following happens: The CPU usage (as shown in Activity Monitor's bar graph) jumps to between 50 and 75% for all four cores, the updated image appears, and the CPU usage settles back down.  This all happens in less than half a second.  Note: this is with the image at the Fit size.  However, sometimes I instead get the following after an adjustment: the CPU usage jumps to 50 to 75% for all four cores and the updated image appears as usual, however, instead of settling back down, the CPU usage jumps up to 90 to 100% for all cores and stays there for 3 to 5 seconds before settling down. Thus it appears that LR is doing some kind of "extra processing" since a lot of computation is happening AFTER the updated image has already appeared.  I will refer to this problem as "EP".  Obviously, when you are getting EP, editing in Develop becomes very balky.
Dependency on ratio between image size and displayed size
It appears that EP only happens when the displayed size of the image (in Fit zoom level and perhaps also Fill zoom level) is above a certain percentage of the actual image size (as currently cropped).  Evidence: When editing full 21MP 5D2 images, I don't experience EP.  If I crop the 5D2 image fairly significantly, then I can get EP.  When editing 10MP images from my Canon S90, I usually get EP for landscape orientation pictures but not for portrait orientation pictures (since in Fit mode, landscape images display at a higher zoom level than portrait images).  If I am getting EP, I can eliminate it by sufficiently reducing the size that LR is displaying the image by resizing the LR window smaller, opening additional panels (I normally edit with only the right panel open), displaying the toolbar, etc.  It appears that EP is enabled when the displayed image is about 50% or larger w.r.t. the actual image (as currently cropped).  For example, EP becomes enabled when a 3648 pixel wide S90 image is displayed at least 17 and 7/8 inches wide on my 100 ppi monitor (i.e. about 1787 pixels).
Dependency on HOW an adjustment is invoked
Even when the displayed image size is large enough w.r.t. the actual image size to enable EP, whether you get it on a given adjustment depends on how you invoke it:
    - If you CLICK (i.e. press the mouse button down and quickly release it) on the track of one of the sliders (a technique I use often to make big jumps), EP will happen.
    - If you press the mouse button down on a slider handle, drag it to a new position, and quickly release the mouse button), EP will happen
    - If you press the mouse button down on a slider handle, drag it to a new position, but continue to hold the mouse button down until the displayed image is updated, EP does NOT happen (either before or after you then release the mouse button).
    - If you highlight the numeric field at the end of a slider and use the arrow keys (possibly along with Shift) to increment or decrement the value, EP does NOT happen.
    - EP will happen if you resize the LR window such that the displayed image size is above the threshold.  (In fact, I determined the threshold by making a series of window width increases until I saw EP indicated by the CPU bar graphs.)
    - EP can happen with local adjustment brush applications, but as with the sliders, it depends on HOW you perform the brush stroke.  Single click and drags with immediate mouse release cause EP, drags with delayed mouse button release don't.
    - Clicking an earlier History state causes EP
    - More exploration could be done.  For example, I haven't looked at Graduated Filter and Spot Removal adjustments.
    My theory of what's happening
With LR2, my understanding is that in Develop mode when the displayed image is below 1:1 zoom level, after an adjustment is invoked, LR calculates the new version of the image to display using a fast, simplified algorithm that doesn't include the more computationally intensive adjustments like Sharpening and Noise Reduction (and perhaps works on a lower rez version of the image with multiple sensels binned together?).  It appears that in conditions described above, LR3 calculates the initial, fast image update and then goes on to do the full update of the image, including the computationally intensive adjustments.  Evidence:   setting Sharpening Amount and Luminance and Color Noise Reduction to zero eliminates EP (or reduces the amount of time it takes to be barely noticeable).  I'm not sure whether the displayed image is updated with the results of the extra processing.  I think the answer is Yes since when I tried an adjustment of changing Sharpening Amount from 0 to 90, the initial update of the displayed image showed sharpening but after the EP, the displayed image was updated again to show somewhat different sharpening. Perhaps Adobe felt that it would be useful to see the more accurate version of the image when it is at or above 50% zoom.  Maybe the UI is supposed to cancel the EP if you start to make another adjustment before it has completed but the canceling doesn't happen unless you invoke the adjustment in one of the ways described above that doesn't cause EP.
    Misc
    - EP doesn't seem to happen for Process 2003
    - As others have mentioned, I'm surprised that LR (both version 2 and 3) in 64bit mode doesn't use more available RAM.  I don't think I've seen LR go above 4GB of virtual memory or above 3GB "Real Memory" (as reported by Activity Monitor) even though I have several GB free.
    - It should be obvious from the above that if you experience EP, there are workarounds: reduce the size of the displayed image (e.g. by window resizing), invoke adjustments in ways that don't cause EP, turn off Sharpening and Noise Reduction until the end of editing an image.
    System specs
First generation Intel Mac Pro with two dual-core CPUs at 2.66 Ghz
    OS 10.5.8
    21GB RAM
ACR cache on volume striped across 3 internal SATA drives
LR catalog and RAWs on an internal SATA drive
    30" HP LP3065 monitor (2560 pixels wide)
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

I'm impressed by your thorough analysis.
Clearly, the programmers haven't figured out the best way to do intelligent caching and/or parallel rendering at a reduced size yet.
In my experience reducing the settings in the "Details" panel doesn't help.
What really bugs me is that the lag (or increasing lack of interactiveness) depends on the number of adjustments one has made.
This shouldn't be the case. If a cache is produced then every further adjustment should only cost the effort for that latest adjustment and not include adjustments before it. There are things that stand in the way of straightforward edit applications:
If you work below 1:1 preview, adjustments have to be shown in a reduced form. If you don't have a way to faithfully mimic the adjustments on the reduced size, you have to do them on the original image and then scale down. That's expensive.
To the best of my knowledge LR uses a fixed image pipeline. Hence, independently of the order in which you apply edits, they are always performed in the same fixed order. Say all spot removal operations are done first. If you have a lot of adjustment brush edits and then add a spot removal operation, it means that all the adjustment brush operations have to be replayed each time you do a little adjustment on your spot removal edit.
I believe what you are seeing is mostly related to 1.
I also believe that the way LR currently handles a moderate number of edits is unacceptable and incompatible with the notion that it is usable in a commercial setting for more than trivial edits. I suspect there is something else going on. If everyone saw the deterioration in performance after a number of edits that I see, I don't think LR would be as accepted as it is. Having said that, I've read that the problem of repeated applications of the adjustment brush slowing LR down has existed for a long time. I truly hope that this doesn't mean we'll have to live for it for the foreseeable future.
There are two ways I can see how 2. should be addressed:
combine the effects of a set of operations into one bitmap operation. Instead of replaying all adjustment brush strokes one after the other (speedwise it feels like this is happening), compute a single bitmap operation that combines all effects.
give up the idea that there is an image pipeline with a fixed execution order.
Some might argue that the second point is at odds with the whole idea of parametric editing, but I dispute that. Either edit operations are commutable in which case the order is immaterial, or they are not. If they are not, the user applies the edits in a way as he/she sees fit and will thus compensate for any effect of a changed ordering.
N.B., currently the doctrine of "fixed ordering of edit applications" results in the effect that even if you convert an image into B&W all your adjustment brush edits that applied colour tints will still show through. Reasoning: The user should be able to locally tint a B&W image. I agree with the latter but this could be achieved by only applying those tinting brush strokes that were created after the B&W conversion. All the ones that happened before should only be used to obtain the correct luminance values for the B&W conversion but obviously they shouldn't cause tinted areas.
The above example demonstrates to me that users naturally expect operations to occurr in the order they have been introduced, not in a fixed predefined order. If that principle were followed, I see no reason why the speed of a single edit should depend on the number of edits that were done to the image before.
I hope the programmers can (and the management wants to) address the performance issues. While I find LR usable for pretty modest edits, in no way the performance on my system approaches that would I would expect from an industrial strenght application.
P.S.: Your message reminded me of the following: When I experience serious lag with LR showing the strokes I make with an adjustment brush, it helps to pause a moment after the first click before one starts moving. This allows LR to catch up and then one can see the effect of the application pretty much interactively. Otherwise, there is terrible lag and the feedback where you have brushed an effect comes way too late.

  • Recently Developed Performance Issues

Three days ago, while watching a video on Hulu.com in full screen, my MacBook Pro running OX 10.4.11 locked up. The screen became slightly distorted with purple stripes. The entire OS was unresponsive: I was unable to exit out of full screen on the video, was unable to open the window to Force Quit and was forced to do a hard shut down by holding down the power button.
I was able to reboot the system and things operated normally for roughly a day. The issue occurred again, and I had to force a shut down again by holding down the power button. This time at the grey start up screen, a darker overlay loaded saying the computer had to be restarted and to do so by holding down the power button. Upon doing this, the message appeared again. This processes repeated several times - sometimes including the purple streaks across the screen - until I was able to load the operating system normally. It was then that I attempted to open Safari, and the streaks returned, the OS locked up and the only way out was a hard reboot again. Finally I was able to access the OS successfully and things continued to work normally until I was watching another video, when the same OS crashing occurred.
The next time I successfully loaded the OS, I attempted to run Disk Utility, but this immediately led to the same locking up as before and included at least once the same purple streaks on the monitor.
Per suggestion of another topic, I booted up from the install disk and ran a Hardware Test. But the initial and extended tests revealed the following error code:
    4YDC/1/40000003:Video Controller
I then did a Safe Boot, which after some time loaded the OS. There I attempted to run Disk Utility. I was able to repair the drive permissions, but when I attempted to verify the disk I received the following error message after the status bar filled up:
    "First Aid Failed.
Disk Utility stopped verifying volume because the following error was encountered:
The underlying tasks reported failure on exit."
As a result of the failure of verification, I am unable to repair the disk using disk utility. The verification did report one error:
    "Invalid directory item count
(It should be 39 instead of 38)"
Upon attempting a normal restart out of the safe boot, the circle at the gray loading screen stopped spinning and locked up. After a hard reboot from that point, the OS loaded normally. I then attempted to load up Safari (I was successful) and visited several webpages. Upon loading up iChat, the system locked up again (without any discoloration on the monitor) and I was forced to perform a hard reboot. However, the system loaded up normally again, and I was able to load Firefox and get to this page to write up this post.
    Some information on my machine
17 inch MacBook Pro purchased in June 2007
    Running OSX 10.4.11
188 GB HD, 74.86 GB free
Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Boot ROM version: MBP31.0070B07
    SMC Version: 1.16f11
I performed the most recent system update earlier this week and have had no other issues with the machine up to this point. When I had the initial problems, it seemed like my system was especially warm, but it's difficult for me to verify that at all. Any thoughts on what my problem might be would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to try and figure out what the issue is before trying an Archive & Install (and would like to know if my available HD space is sufficient to take that step)
Thank you all for any help.

Hello capbarclay, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    4YDC/1/40000003:Video Controller
If AHT finds an error then it's likely believable, seems you have a Hardware problem. I'd run the extended test again.
As a result of the failure of verification, I am unable to repair the disk using disk utility. The verification did report one error
Run it from the Install Disc again until you have no errors. Do not attempt to use it in any other way until you get no errors.
I'd like to try and figure out what the issue is before trying an Archive & Install (and would like to know if my available HD space is sufficient to take that step)
You do have enough Free Space to A&I, but I would not attempt it until the Disk is known to not have any errors.

  • Development, Quality , Production server

    Dear Experts,
I am new to SAP HR , Can some one help to understand the following terms.
    1. Development server , where it has more clients. I am not able to understand it , like why it is being used.
    2. Quality server - What is the purpose of it ?
    3. Production server - what is the purpose of it ?
As a SAP HCM Functional consultant, what is our role in this 3 server ? If we need to make some changes where we need to do the configuration ?
    4. Also please let me know what is Transport request ?
Waiting for the valuable reply from you experts.
    Regards
    Bala

    Hi Bala,
In the Development system the SAP ERP is being configured: Customizations are done by the different processes consultants, developments are done by the programmers, etc.
The main system is the Production system - this is the system where the end-users work.
The end-user are required to perform checks and quality-assurance processes before the different programs and table are transported to the production system - these checks are performed on the Quality Assurance (QA) system.
Each system may have several clients, E.G., the Development system has the main client (usually its 100) - in which the consultants and developer perform the configurations, and another client (e.g. 110 or 120) - in which they can test the configuration.
Each system usually sits on different server. This is the call of the organizational IT department and the BASIS system. They will tell you how to logon to each system.
The transport request, his name suits him, is being used to transport customizations and developments from client to client and from system to system.
    Regards,
    Liran

  • Suggestion for oracle developer 2.0

could oracle developer add some new feature to monitor the oracle performance.are there any tools anybody used to monitor the oracle performance, please give me some advice, thanks.

You can make feature requests on the SQL Developer Exchange (see the link at the top of the forum).
SQLDeveloper already has support for explain plan, tracing and profiling which are most of what you need for development performance testing in development. There is also a plug in from 4th Elephant which does some instance monitoring.
I would be strongly opposed to bloating SQLDeveloper with performance monitoring features. Oracle Enterprise Manager provides all the performance monitoring you could need. There are also a number of third party tools, but I don't know enough about any of them to recommend any of them.

  • Personnel Development - View Assignment

    Hello,
Using Personnel Development/Performance Management, I am trying to assign a View to the rest of the managers, rather than just my specific user.  Is there an easy way to accomplish this?  When I save a view, only User is available in the Assignment section.  Is there a way to get Everyone in the list as well?
Any help you can provide will be useful.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Martin,
Thanks you very much for the assistance.
    The client wants employee development:
Short Term & Long Term Dev Plan for Employees.
Track & Monitor the progress of employee.
Profile Matchup against positions to determine skills & knowledge of the employee.
Training plans to adress the individual dev needs.
These are few of the needs, but i dont think we have all these available in Talent.
    Please guide.

  • LR4 performance technique

I have found that develop performance is good if I turn "off" detail and lens corrections on a macbook pro running win 7.  This works for the current image, but when I move on to the next, LR resets the detail and lens corrections panel to "on".  It is a pain to turn the detail panel off for each successive image.  Is there a way to make the panel on/off setting sticky?  This would allow me to assign detail and lens correction settings on import, and then temporally disable them while I make tonal and colour adjustments.
Am I correct in understanding if you leave the detail and lens correction settings at default this is the same as turning them off?

Develop slider performance is slow if I make any sharpening adjustments other than the adobe defaults.  No matter what the sharpening settings are, turning them off gives the same performance as using the adobe default settings.

    Hi,
You can try a simple reset on the printer
remove power cord from the rear of the printer  (unit is on), press cancel button and plug back the power cable and keep holding the cancel button. Leave the cancel button when the LEDs does not longer blinking/flash.
also you can reinstall the drivers if the reset doesnt help.

  • Where should I put things on my new computer

Since I've been running LR (currently 3.6) under Windows XP on a 6 year old HP desktop with an AMD dual core processer I just purchased a Dell XPS 8500 and plan to install LR 4.1 and move my catalogs and images to this new machine.
The machine came with a 1 TB SATA || hard disk, and I've installed a 240 GB SATA III SSD and installed Windows 7 on it.  I currently have my images on an external 1.5 TB eSATA hard disk connected to the old computer, and expect to connect it to new computer the same way.
Currently (in LR 3.6) I find I spend most of my time in the library module culling images and selecting a small number to develop.  I generate 100% previews for a shoot, and then switch between grid, loupe, and compare views, frequently zooming to 100% to check and compare critical focus.  Since I develop a much smaller number for photos, and typically do pretty minimal processing, don't spend as much time in the develop module.  Assuming that I'll do the same thing in LR 4.1, my top priority is library and performance, particularly when zoomed to 100%, and secondarily develop performance.
My question is, to get the best performance, where (on  the SSD, internal hard disk, or external hard disk) should I
    install LR 4.1
    store my catalog(s)
    store the Camera Raw cache
    store my images

hopefully the rest of the community responds with some of the specifics you are asking, but take a look at

  • Career in SAP - PS at the age of 42. Advice needed.

    Hi,
I need some suggestions as I am considering making career transition to SAP u2013 PS. I live in the US so I will be pursuing my career in this country. Hereu2019s my background info:
I am a PMP certified and ITIL V3 Foundation certified Sr. Project Manager. I am 42 years old and I have over 15 years of IT experience. Also, I started working on my PMI-Agile certification (PMI-ACP). I work as a consultant.
My expertise is in managing from small to large development and functional projects, process improvement, data management, data strategy, liaison between IT staff and business clients, process Improvement, Software Development Life Cycle, Risks and Issues management, Business Analysis, Software Requirements, Technical Solutions, Time Estimating, Work/ Resource Breakdown Structure, Project Scheduling and Budgeting, Strategic Planning and Solutions, MS Project etc.
Prior to project management, I had strong technical background in Data warehouse, data migration, Database architecture, design, development, performance tuning etc. primarily in Oracle and SQL Server, Business objects, UNIX etc. I have around 13 years of Oracle and Unix experience.
After discussion with several training institutions, they said that SAP u2013 PS is the best option to start SAP career. My questions are:
    - Is it good idea to make a career transition to SAP at the age of 42 in USA?
    - I am at a senior level of my career. Will I be considered an entry level if I start SAP career or will my prior experience be given some credit?
    - My goal is to continue consulting for a few more years and then take a permanent (non- consulting) career. I want to stop travelling on the job. I know a few SAP professionals and they all have a travelling job. Are there good positions in SAP (Manager or director level) that do not involve a lot of travel?
    - Other than SAP-PS, what other functional areas of SAP will be worth looking into?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

It is never too late to start over or make a transition in your career. I know somebody who at 40 transitioned from a manufacturing area to become a BASIS consultant.
I am at a senior level of my career. Will I be considered an entry level if I start SAP career or will my prior experience be given some credit?
With your kind of experience and background, you will fit the bill of a Project Manager. Good knowledge in SAP PS will just be a "good-to-have" item on your resume.
My goal is to continue consulting for a few more years and then take a permanent (non- consulting) career. I want to stop travelling on the job. I know a few SAP professionals and they all have a travelling job. Are there good positions in SAP (Manager or director level) that do not involve a lot of travel?
Yes most SAP Consultants travel a lot. But it depends on the kind of organization you work for. A purely consulting company will demand frequent travelling. But if you work for a product company or if your company is the "client" then the travel is minimal.
Other than SAP-PS, what other functional areas of SAP will be worth looking into?
As I said earlier, you do not have to get your hands dirty with the various modules in SAP. For your experience you can oversee the work done by others. But yes, always better to have a good command in the module. PS module is one of the most robust and "complete" modules in SAP. It is probably the only module that is in some way or the other connected to all the core modules in SAP - MM, SD, FI, WM.... you name it.
So to sum up, if you have a great command over PS, then you pretty much know a thing or two (considering the oceanic size) in SAP.

    Hi SDNs,
I am working for ESS/MSS for ERP2004 system to NW2004s system.Afer importing the business packages to portal, I got only the following roles for ESS and MSS.
    Employee Self-Service:

    MSS: MyStaff:
Overview | Attendance | Personnel Change Request | Recruiting | Reporting | Headcount
    MyBudget:
Overview | Monitors and Reports | Equipment | Planning
According to the Worksets i got it, i couldn't find, Training and Development activity, Performance Mangement in both ESS and MSS.
    How do I achieve this?
We also have a requirement of OH & S to be integrated to ESS.
Please suggest me to integrate this activities.
    Your help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sireesha.B.

    Hi,
Training and Development, Performance Management are not available in the latest versions of ESS and MSS.
You may have to use the old Business Packages to incorporate this, the only difference would be that those pages would be BSPs.
Please refer to the following threads:
    ESS/MSS with my SAP ERP2005
    Are there Appraisal for ESS
BSPs for Performance Management - Response Appreciated.
