DFSr supported cluster configurations - replication between shared storage

I have a very specific configuration for DFSr that appears to be suffering severe performance issues when hosted on a cluster, as part of a DFS replication group.
My configuration:
3 Physical machines (blades) within a physical quadrant.
3 Physical machines (blades) hosted within a separate physical quadrant
Both quadrants are extremely well connected, local, 10GBit/s fibre.
There is local storage in each quadrant, no storage replication takes place.
The 3 machines in the first quadrant are MS clustered with shared storage LUNs on a 3PAR filer.
The 3 machines in the second quadrant are also clustered with shared storage, but on a separate 3PAR device.
8 shared LUNs are presented to the cluster in the first quadrant, and an identical storage layout is connected in the second quadrant. Each LUN has an associated HAFS application associated with it which can fail-over onto any machine in the local cluster.
DFS replication groups have been set up for each LUN and data is replicated from an "Active" cluster node entry point, to a "Passive" cluster node that provides no entry point to the data via DFSn and a Read-Only copy on it's shared cluster
storage.
For the sake of argument, assume that all HAFS application instances in the first quadrant are "Active" in a read/write configuration, and all "Passive" instances of the HAFS applications in the other quadrants are Read-Only.
This guide: http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/29/deploying-dfs-replication-on-a-windows-failover-cluster-part-i.aspx defines
how to add a clustered service to a replication group. It clearly shows using "Shared storage" for the cluster, which is common sense otherwise there effectively is no application fail-over possible and removes the entire point of using a resilient
cluster.
This article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_061 defines the following:
DFS Replication in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2 includes the ability to add a failover cluster
as a member of a replication group. The DFS Replication service on versions of Windows prior to Windows Server 2008 R2
is not designed to coordinate with a failover cluster, and the service will not fail over to another node.
It then goes on to state, quite incredibly: DFS Replication does not support replicating files on Cluster Shared Volumes.
Stating quite simply that DFSr does not support Cluster Shared Volumes makes absolutely no sense at all after stating clusters
are supported in replication groups and a technet guide is provided to setup and configure this configuration. What possible use is a clustered HAFS solution that has no shared storage between the clustered nodes - none at all.
My question:  I need some clarification, is the text meant to read "between" Clustered
Shared Volumes?
The storage configuration must to be shared in order to form a clustered service in the first place. What
we am seeing from experience is a serious degradation of
performance when attempting to replicate / write data between two clusters running a HAFS configuration, in a DFS replication group.
If for instance, as a test, local / logical storage is mounted to a physical machine the performance of a DFS replication group between the unshared, logical storage on the physical nodes is approaching 15k small files per minute on initial write and even high
for file amendments. When replicating between two nodes in a cluster, with shared clustered storage the solution manages a weak 2,500 files per minute on initial write and only 260 files per minute when attempting to update data / amend files.
By testing various configurations we have effectively ruled out the SAN, the storage, drivers, firmware, DFSr configuration, replication group configuration - the only factor left that makes any difference is replicating from shared clustered storage, to another
shared clustered storage LUN.
So in summary:
Logical Volume ---> Logical Volume = Fast
Logical Volume ---> Clustered Shared Volume = ??
Clusted Shared Volume ---> Clustered Shared Volume = Pitifully slow
Can anyone explain why this might be?
The guidance in the article is in clear conflict with all other evidence provided around DFSr and clustering, however it seems to lean towards why we may be seeing a real issue with replication performance.
Many thanks for your time and any help/replies that may be received.

Hello Shaon Shan,
I am also having the same scenario at one of my customer place.
We have two FileServers running on Hyper-V 2012 R2 as guest VM using Cluster Shared Volume.  Even the data partition drive also a part of CSV.
It's really confusing whether the DFS replication on CSV are supported or not, then what would be consequence if using.
In my knowledge we have some customers they are using Hyper-V 2008 R2 and DFS is configured and running fine on CSV since more than 4 years without any issue.
Appreciate if you can please elaborate and explain in details about the limitations on using CSV.
Thanks in advance,
Abul

  • Disk replication for Shared Storage in Weblogic server

    Hi,
Why we need a disk replication in web-logic server for shared storage systems? What is the advantage of it and how this disk replication can be achieved in web-logic for the shared storage which contains the common configurations and software's which will be used by a pool of client machines? Please clarify.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I am not the middleware expert. However ACFS (Oracle Cloud File System) is a clustering filesystem, which also has the functionality for replication:

  • Configure replication between directory server 5.1 and 5.2

we have two directory servers running on different machine 5.1 and new 5.2. All database have been successfully backup and restore from 5.1 to new 5.2. In this scenario, we would like to setup 5.1 and new 5.2 D.S as multi-master replication.
As described in the sun Documentation, we have copy few ldif file from new 5.2 to 5.1 so that both schema are up to date.
The new instance of 5.2 is running fine. However, on the other hand, 5.1 has a problem to start the server as show in the following below.
    # ./start-slapd
[31/May/2005:14:07:43 +0800] dse - The entry cn=schema in file /usr/iplanet/servers/slapd-ifpdev02/config/schema/50ns-admin.ldif is invalid, error code 21 (Invalid syntax) - object class nsAdminServer: Unknown required attribute type "nsServerID"
[31/May/2005:14:07:43 +0800] dse - Please edit the file to correct the reported problems and then restart the server.
Any help from you guys are greatly appreciated.

I recommened that you read the Release Notes of DS5.2, there are some notes on Replication between 5.1 and 5.2.
    ===
In Directory Server 5.2, the schema file 11rfc2307.ldif has been altered to conform to rfc2307. If replication is enabled between 5.2 servers and 5.1 servers, the rfc2307 schema MUST be corrected on the 5.1 servers, or replication will not work correctly.
    Workaround
To ensure correct replication between Directory Server 5.2 and Directory Server 5.1, perform the following tasks:
    * For zip installations, remove the 10rfc2307.ldif file from the 5.1 schema directory and copy the 5.2 11rfc2307.ldif file to the 5.1 schema directory. (5.1 Directory Server Solaris packages already include this change.)
    * Copy the following files from the 5.2 schema directory into the 5.1 schema directory, overwriting the 5.1 copies of these files:
    11rfc2307.ldif, 50ns-msg.ldif, 30ns-common.ldif, 50ns-directory.ldif, 50ns-mail.ldif, 50ns-mlm.ldif, 50ns-admin.ldif, 50ns-certificate.ldif, 50ns-netshare.ldif, 50ns-legacy.ldif, and 20subscriber.ldif.
    * Restart the Directory Server 5.1 server.
    * In the Directory Server 5.2 server, set the nsslapd-schema-repl-useronly attribute under cn=config to on.
    * Configure replication on both servers.
    * Initialize the replicas.

  • 10g RAC on varitas Cluster Software & Shared storage

we are in process of making 10g RAC without using Oracle Clusterware , we will be using Varitas Cluster software and varitas shared storage , I am looking for some quick notes/article on setting up/Installing this RAC configuration.

Step-By-Step Installation of 9i RAC on VERITAS STORAGE FOUNDATION (DBE/AC) and Solaris
    Doc ID: Note:254815.1
These are the notes i was looking for, Question is Only the RDBMS version will be changes , all other setup will be same as mentioned in Notes, and DBA work will start from creating DBs, right?

  • Qmaster Compressor and Shared Storage

I've got Qmaster working on my compressor encodes and everything is working fine. What I want to know is whether there is a way to cut out the extra copy of data for the encode. All of my machines in the cluster have the same shared storage mounted on the desktop, but still my jobs get copied first and then encoded.
Is there anyway to configure qmaster, compressor and the cluster machines so they all use their local path for source files? And avoid the extra copy of the source files to the controller system?
    Thanks in advance.

You want to make sure in Compressor, under Preferences, the Cluster Options field says Never Copy Source to Cluster. Assuming you have all of the correct permissions set and have the Shared Storage configured properly then it should work. "Should" being the key word.

  • Does Hyper-v HA need shared storage?

I have a server running Hyper-v 2012 server. On this hyper-v host I have 1 DC and 1 DHCP server running. I don't worry too much in regards to fault tolerance with these servers. I have two other DCs running on physical servers and if DHCP goes down, it only
takes minutes to install DHCP elsewhere.
My company is now looking into virtualization and would like to start virtualizing more servers, servers that are critical and does need some type of HA and/or FT.
We are a SMB (~20 servers. mostly server 2008) company. For our most critical server, the longest it can stay down is 1 hour. So our recovery time should be less than 1 hour.
With all this said, what would you recommend in terms of building a virtual environment. Would using hyper-v replica be enough or would HA have to be implemented? If HA is implemented, and I imaging that the hyper-v hosts need to be in a cluster, would we
need shared storage (SAN) in order to use HA and/or FT?
Please let me know if you need more information.
    Best regards,
    Alex

I would recommend using a cluster setup for High Availability. Of course, that would require a shared storage. Ideally, you need to have a SAN for its performance. However, with Hyper-V 2012 and higher you can use SMB 3.0 for the shared storage instead.
    More details here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
Of course, it remains better to have a replica too if this is possible.

  • No shared disks visible in the Cluster Configuration Storage dialog

When installing the Oracle 10g clusterware the "Cluster Configuration Storage" dialog shows no shared disks.
    We are using:
    Windows 2003 Server
    HP Eva 4400

    Hello,
all disks in cluster are visible from all nodes (2 of them).
We tested it with unpartioned and partioned disks (primary and extended). No way to make them visible for the OUI.
Automount is enabled in Windows like required from Oracle.
Besides, we are using Standard Edition. Therefore we have to work with ASM.
    Any more information needed.
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi,
As far as I know there don’t have the log replica function between failover cluster node, if you want to have the Unified log management you can refer the following related

  • Windows 2003 Standard Edition (Cluster Configuration Storage page)

I am trying to install RAC R2 on windows Server 2003 (Standard Edition). I am using FireWire 800 SIIG to connect to Maxtor OneTouch III External HDD.
When installing cluster Services, i do not see the Cluster Storage Devices. When i go to Computer Management, i see all the partitions of the raw device.
One "Cluster Configuration Storage" page, the Available Disks show no partitions.
Oracle installtion documentation says "On the Cluster Configuration Storage page, identify the disks that you want to use for the Oracle Clusterware files and, optionally, Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS) storage. Highlight each of these disks one at a time and click Edit to open the Specify Disk Configuration page where you define the details for the selected disk"
In my case, i do not see any disks. What am i missing?
    Any Thoughts. Please advise
    Thanks

You have a more fundamental problem, Firewire disks will not work for RAC on Windows. The storage needs to be shared, Firewire disks can't be shared on Windows. On Linux, Oracle took the open source firewire driver and modified it to allow more than one host to connect. On Windows the driver is closed source so they can't do that.
I presume you are wanting to try-out RAC on Windows, If so another solution may be to download one of the many iSCSI Servers that are available. Microsoft ship an iSCSI Initiator for Windows, this allows you to share a 'block device' which is what RAC needs - then you can choose your RAC Database storage method of choice, ASM, OCFS, RAW. I prefer ASM

  • Advantages of Shared Storage in SOA Cluster

    HI,
Enterprise deployment guide ( http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15523_01/core.1111/e12036/toc.htm) , installing binaries in shared storage.
We have NAS as shared storage.
My Question is what are the advantages/disadvantages of installing binaries in shared storage?
One advantage i know as mentioned in the guide is that, we can create multiple soa servers from single installation.
    Thanks
    Manish

It has always been my understanding that the shared storage is prerequsite, not a recommendation, meaning if you want a cluster configuration you must have shared storage. I have done a quick look through the EDG can't can see any reference installing binaries on a non-shared storage.
I'm not 100% on this but I don't believe the WLS and SOA home are used during run time. The run time files used are in the managed server location, e.g. user_projects. By default this sit in the WLS home.
Also don't know much about shared storage, e.g. NAS over SAN but if you already have NAS, this seems to be the logical choice.
    cheers

  • 10g RAC on varitas Cluster Software and Shared storage

    1. Install oracle binaries and patches (RAC install)
    2. Configure Cluster control interface (shared storage) for Oracle
    3. Create instances of oracle
These are 3 things i am wondering how to handle, I did all these on Oracle Clusterware , but never on Veritas Cluster ware ...all these 3 steps are the same or different. In someone can help..

How we can do this while using varitas cluster software
    1. Install oracle binaries and patches (RAC install)
    2. Configure Cluster control interface (shared storage) for Oracle
    3. Create instances of oracle
If we install RDBMS 10.2.0.1 with standard installer it will catch the vcs and when we will be running dbca it will ask for RAC db option?
what is Configure Cluster control interface (shared storage) for Oracle??

  • Sun zfs storage cluster configuration problem

    Good day, friends!
    I've a very strange problem.
Got two zfs storage *7320* controllers and want to make a cluster. according to manual I should make several clicks to do this, but...
first appliance is configured the second is showing in console :
This appliance is being configured as a member of a cluster.
Please wait while initial configuration takes place.
    Initializing cluster ...
for five days!!! i've rebooted the second appliance - no change, still initializing.
    Can anyone help? please!!!

I've seen this a bunch of times on our storage. The basic problem is that the head you want to cluster is already "configured". This doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong! The usual problem is that someone did the "initial configuration" on both heads. However, it can mean that something may have gone wrong in the initial cluster configuration.
The only way to get past it that I've seen is to add "-c" to the kernel line in Grub when it comes up from a reboot. This does a full factory reset again. So when Grub comes up before the device begins the rest of the boot process, press "e" to edit, then scroll down to the "kernel" line, press "e" again to edit that line, add " -c" to the end of the kernel line, press "escape", then press "b" to boot.
If this seems complicated, contact Support.oracle.com to have a tech do it for you. It's straightforward if you're already familiar with Grub, but not so much if you're not.

  • Configuring SMTP Namespace Sharing between two Exchange Forests on the same LAN

Hi guys, really hoping that someone can help me with configuring SMTP Namespace Sharing between two Exchange Forests on the same LAN.
Basically, I have created a new forest and installed a new exchange organisation in this forest.  Both forests are located on the same IP subnet and a two way trust has been created between the forests.  Federated sharing has also been configured.
I can use ADMT to migrate the user and computer accounts to the new forest and also migrate test mailboxes over.  Ideally, I want to be able to do the mailbox migrations in stages so will need to be able to have mail flowing between the two forests.
I have read over the following article (http://ibrahimnore.wordpress.com/2012/09/06/configuring-smtp-namespace-sharing-between-two-exchange-forests-part-2/)
which is good but it's demonstrating over the internet, can anybody advise how this can be achieved on the local LAN?
    Any help greatly appreciated :-)

    Hi Gilliano,
Thanks for correct link. I must say this is a very good article indeed, I read the entire article and if you go to the 3rd part of this article, please note the text "DOMAINC.COM is configured as Internal Relay Accepted Domain on both the domains"
This is exactly what I asked you to check. Personally, I understand the method described in this article will work but its very complex to manage and administer, while the easiest option is to configure internal relay at the first place and no need to make
so many DNS changes and customizations to your environment.
The solution really depends on what your requirement is - Since you mentioned that you are migrating stuff over from source to destination - I feel this article is too complex for your situation and not really worth (for your requirement). The setup described
in the article is an excellent choice if you are planning to keep both forests alive for longer duration due to several reasons like compliance or company mergers and so on...
please let me know if my explanation is not clear enough.. we can even even have a one-on-one email conversation too!
    All the best!
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. Regards, Siva
