DHCP question on VPN to ASA 5520

Our VPN uses the Microsoft VPN client to connect to an ASA 5520 running 8.0(3). Clients get address from our internal DHCP server. How do I get the ASA to send the client computer name in the DHCP request, rather the the group name and some number it appends to it? This is an issue for us because those entries show up as "rogue" registrations in DNS, because they don't match our naming structure.

Make sure if the client is forwarding it's name in the DHCP messages. Parameters can't be added at ASA.

    I would pay close attention on bandwidth more than anything else, it would all depend on what type of traffic the 100 RA mobile users will be using at any given time that be traversing a 1meg pipe, for example 1 single RA user may copy 1 gig file from corporate server or vise versa which can saturate that pipe. You would have to create some sort of baseline on all link points before RA implementation to sort of get you a picture of current link utilization to plan accordinly and worry about bandwidth performance and plan accordingly.

    This topic has been beat to death, but I did not see a real answer. Here is configuration:
    1) 2 x ASA 5520, running 8.2
    2) Both ASA are in same outside and inside interface broadcast domains – common Ethernet on interfaces
    3) Both ASA are running single context but are active/standby failovers of each other. There are no more ASA’s in the equation. Just these 2. NOTE: this is not a Active/Active failover configuration. This is simply a 1-context active/standby configuration.
    4) I want to share VPN load among two devices and retain active/standby failover functionality. Can I use VPN load balancing feature?
    This sounds trivial, but I cannot find a clear answer (without testing this); and many people are confusing the issue. Here are some examples of confusion. These do not apply to my scenario.
    Active/Active failover is understood to mean only two ASA running multi-contexts. Context 1 is active on ASA1 Context 2 is active on ASA2. They are sharing failover information. Active/Active does not mean two independently configured ASA devices, which do not share failover communication, but do VPN load balancing. It is clear that this latter scenario will work and that both ASA are active, but they are not in the Active/Active configuration definition. Some people are calling VPN load balancing on two unique ASA’s “active/active”, but it is not
    The other confusing thing I have seen is that VPN config guide for VPN load balancing mentions configuring separate IP address pools on the VPN devices, so that clients on ASA1 do not have IP address overlap with clients on ASA2. When you configure ip address pool on active ASA1, this gets replicated to standby ASA2. In other words, you cannot have two unique IP address pools on a ASA Active/Standby cluster. I guess I could draw addresses from external DHCP server, and then do some kind of routing. Perhaps this will work?
    In any case, any experts out there that can answer question? TIA!

    Wow, some good info posted here (both questions and some answers). I'm in a similar situation with a couple of vpn load-balanced pairs... my goal was to get active-standby failover up and running in each pair- then I ran into this thread and saw the first post about the unique IP addr pools (and obviously we can't have unique pools in an active-standby failover rig where the complete config is replicated). So it would seem that these two features are indeed mutually exclusive. Real nice initial post to call this out.
    Now I'm wondering if the ASA could actually handle a single addr pool in an active-standby fo rig- *if* the code supported the exchange of addr pool status between the fo members (so they each would know what addrs have been farmed out from this single pool)? Can I get some feedback from folks on this? If this is viable, then I suppose we could submit a feature request to Cisco... not that this would necessarily be supported anytime soon, but it might be worth a try. And I'm also assuming we might need a vip on the inside int as well (not just on the outside), to properly flip the traffic on both sides if the failover occurs (note we're not currently doing this).
    Finally, if a member fails in a std load-balanced vpn pair (w/o fo disabled), the remaining member must take over traffic hitting the vip addr (full time)... can someone tell me how this works? And when this pair is working normally (with both members up), do the two systems coordinate who owns the vip at any time to load-balance the traffic? Is this basically how their load-balancing scheme works?
    Anyway, pretty cool thread... would really appreciate it if folks could give some feedback on some of the above.

    VPN is connected successfully. But not able to ping any remote ip or fqdn from client pc. But able to ping ASA 5520 firewalls inside interface.     What about translating the traffic on the local ASA (Active unit) for traffic received from the VPN tunnel to the internal interface IP address? You can try something like nat (outside,inside) source dynamic obj-VpnRemoteTraffic interface destination static StandbyIP StandbyIP

  • Cisco ASA 5520 Site-to-site VPN TUNNELS disconnection problem

    Hi,
    i recently purchased a Cisco ASA 5520 and running firmware v. 8.4(2) and ASDM v. 6.4(5)106.
    I have installed 50 Site-to-Site VPN tunnels, and they work fine.
    but randomly the VPN Tunnels keep disconnecting and few seconds after it connects it self automaticly....
    it happens when there is no TRAFIC on, i suspect.
    in ASDM in Group Policies under DfltGrpPolicy (system default) i have "idle timeout" to "UNLMITED" but still they keep disconnecting and connecting again... i have also verified that all VPN TUNNELS are using this Group Policie. and all VPN tunnels have "Idle Timeout: 0"
    this is very annoying as in my case i have customers having a RDP (remote dekstop client) open 24/7 and suddenly it gets disconnected due to no traffic ?
    in ASDM under Monitoring -> VPN .. i can see all VPN tunnels recently disconnected in "Login Time Duration"... some 30minutes, 52minutes, 40minutes and some 12 minutes ago.. and so on... they dont DISCONNECT at SAME time.. all randomly..
    i dont WANT the VPN TUNNELS to disconnect, i want them to RUN until we manually disconnect them.
    Any idea?

  • How to change VPN peer address on ASA 5520

    Environment:
    ASA 5520 running 7.2(1)
    IPSEC L2L VPN established using Wizard.
    The IP address of the remote peer needs to change. Using ASDM, I cannot change the Tunnel Group name (which is currently the peer address). I can change the peer address in the IPSec rule, but is this all that is needed?
    Do I have to add a new tunnel group using the new peer address for the name? If so how does this relate to the other objects that are required for a VPN?
    When you create a VPN using the Wizard, it creates multiple objects that are hard to track when changes are required. Is it best to delete all of the current VPN objects and create a new config using the wizard again?
    Is it better to make the changes using the CLI? What lines need to be changed for the peer address when using commands?

    Is it better to make the changes using the CLI?
    - I would always recommend it, but if you don't know it you have no option.
    Add new tunnel-group with group name as new peer address, same key etc. Add new peer address to peer settings under edit ipsec rule. Then you should be able to remove the old tunnel group. Hope this helps you, been a while since I did it this way.

  • What is the Cisco ASA 5520's VPN ustility like?

    Hi, I have a Cisco 3015 VPN concentrator, the Web admin tool is really good. We are getting a 2 Cisco 5520 soon in failover mode and I wondered if I should move my site-to-sites to the ASA 5520 and if so how good it the tool for the ASA VPN's as I not seen it yet?

    The VPN capabilities of the ASA are very similar to that of the concentrators. Much of the management interface will have the same look and feel on both appliances. Migrating your L2L VPNs is a matter of preference and will depend on your topology. For me, I prefer to terminate my L2L VPNs into a DMZ and use the ASA to permit/deny traffic into my LAN.

    while migrating from a VPN Concentrator 3000 to ASA 5520 (IOS 8.0.4), we'd like to put all VPN-related configuration settings in an openldap server (2.3.27).
    We have trouble finding ways to put group settings, LanLists (as they were called on the Concentratror, or ACLs) and Lan2Lan configurations in LDAP.
    Authenticating users through openldap works, and there seems to be a aaa-server command "ldap-group-dn-base", but it seems this is only used in conjunction with Active Directory, while we only use openldap.
    Furthermore, ACL's seem to be indices refering to ACLs locally stored on the ASA: how to put the complete ACL in LDAP?
    Preferred LDAP configuration:
    VPN-users: ou=users,dc=vpn,dc=COMPANY,dc=com
    VPN-groups: ou=groups,dc=vpn,dc=COMPANY,dc=com
    VPN-L2L: ou=lantolan,dc=vpn,dc=COMPANY,dc=com
    How to refer the ASA to an entry in ou=groups,... from an entry residing in ou=users?

    Thank you. I did find the attribute map option, but the manuals and explanations that describe this feature all refer to group-settings (ACLs etc) that are _already configured_ on the ASA. They refer to a groupname or ACL-name that is "known" in the ASA configuration.
    What we'd like to do is put -all- possible group, ACL, lan2lanlists, data in ldap. So when a user authenticates:
    1. his user-credentials are checked against LDAP and relevant configurations (using attribute maps) are loaded into the ASA
    2. his group-credentials are checked against LDAP and relevant group-configurations (using attribute maps) are loaded into the ASA
    3. possible lan/network-lists to which his group-information refers, are loaded from LDAP into the ASA.
    Perhaps I'm missing something, but I've found only ways to put the _name_ (/ID) of these settings in LDAP, referring to settings/configurations already existing in the ASA. I'd like to put _all_ the settings/configurations in LDAP as well.

  • Connectivity Issue between ASA 5520 firewall and Cisco Call Manager

    Recently i have installed ASA 5520 firewall, Below is the detail for my network

    The users and the IP phone are getting IP from the DHCP server which configured on cisco 3560 Switch.
    the Default Gateway for Data user is 10.12.10.2/24 and
    for the voice users is 10.12.110.2/24
    now the problem is that the users is not able to ping 10.12.110.2 call manager. please if somebody can help in this regard. i will appreciate the prompt response against this issues.

  • RA VPN on ASA and Split Tunneling

    Hello Forum,
    I'm having an issue with RA VPN and split tunneling. Our company doesn't allow split tunneling.
    I have the following....
    ASA 5520 - ASA Version - 8.0(3)
    Group Policies defined for different groups. My test group, I thought I disabled split tunneling but they are still able to surf the net.
    For Split Tunneling Policy...
    Inherit is unchecked
    I have "Tunnel Network List Below"
    Testing_splitTunnelAcl is my acl. I have a bunch of host IPs in the list. I don't have any or 0.0.0.0 in the list.
    But they can still surf the net.
    I would like to block access to net. No hairpinning or internet u-turns.
    How do I do this?

    What does your Testing_spliTunnelAcl have?
    To disable split tunneling, your Testing_spliTunnelAcl should only have this...
    access-list Testing_splitTunnelAcl standard permit any
    ...which means all traffic will be encrypted and will be sent to ASA no matter what. If you add any IP Address, only those traffic destined to the IP Address in the list will be encrypted and send to ASA, everything else will go to internet from the client.
    It may be confusing but try and see what happens.

    Im in the middle of configuring Ip Phone SSL VPN through ASA, got stuck on authentication.. When I enter username and password on the phone screen, i get "Username and password failed" message on the screen. However, in ASA logs I see the following line

    Hi,
    If you're not using certificates in client authentication then the SSL handshake will complete before the user is requested to authenticate with username/password.  If this authentication request fails you will see the SSL session terminated immediately following this failure (as in the logs you provided).  Notice the 5 seconds between the SSL session establishment and termination, this is most likely when the user is being authenticated against the aaa server.  If the phone is failing authentication against an external aaa-server you'll want to investigate the logs on that server to determine the root cause of the failure.  The ASA can also provide confirmation of the authentication request/reject with the command 'show aaa-server'.  If you want to see what's going on at an authentication protocol level you can enable several debugs including "debug aaa authentication|common|internal' and protocol specific debugs such as 'debug radius user|session|all' or 'debug ldap'.

    Hi,
    The setup is usually pretty easy
    First you should create a Standard ACL that defines the networks which are found behind the VPN connection from the users perspective. In other words the networks that need to be tunneled.
    For example if your LAN networks was 10.0.0.0/24
    access-list SPLIT-TUNNEL standard permit 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
    Then you would need to configure some additional things in your VPN client connections "group-policy"
    For example
    group-policy CLIENT attributes
    split-tunnel-policy tunnelspecified
    split-tunnel-network-list value SPLIT-TUNNEL
    The above would essentially handle the Split Tunnel portion of the configurations. The "split-tunnel-policy" command specifies how the network selection for the VPN is handled. It might aswell be configured to specify Full Tunnel or to simply Exclude some networks. The "split-tunnel-network-list value" command tells the ASA the networks used in the Split Tunnel (the ACL we created)
