Dialog modality

Hi! I'm having a problem concerning dialog modality..I'm working on a game which is run in a JFrame. In this game, I use several dialogs to request user input etc, and I want these dialogs to behave like they were modal. Unfortunately, if I actually make them modal, they are useless for me, since that blocks the thread that is running the renderer for that dialog (that is, the thread that continously updates the dialog visuals - this is a very custom dialog). It's also blocking threads that are sending input to these dialogs in addition to the user (over an network connection). My workaround so far is to make the dialog regain it's focus every time it loses it, but that's not a very nice solution; it creates flickering in the dialog, and that's something i realy would like to avoid. So does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate som help here!

Thanks for the tip! I tried a demo for the project though, only to discover the same flickering in the dialogs and frames when I try to click anywhere outside the them. But I realized that was not the case for windows, so that may be the solution for me...AndI'm also going to take a closer look to the PMM-solution you suggested. Thanks!

After a little bit of Window-research, I have found out it doesn't fit my needs, so I'm pretty much left off where I started. And I think I'm using a concept like the PMM already, as my input handler does nothing if there are any active dialogs (all components in the JFrame are custom, so they are easy to control). Therefore, the only problem is (still) that I would like to stop the JFrame from gaining focus at all, instead of just returning the focus to the dialog when it's necessary. (since that causes flickering). This is of course not a big deal, but I'm just curious if anyone has a solution to it...

Suggestion: Please make the Combine Files dialog modal to the Acrobat application instance.

I often combine files into a PDF with Acrobat (XI). It is annoying that the main Acrobat window is shown while the Combine Files dialog window is open. I often review other PDF files during the process of selection for later combination. It happens far too often, that I accidentally close the Combine Files instance main Acrobat window during the process and subsequently lose the already specified file selection. I would suggest to make the Combine Files dialog modal for the Acrobat instance so that users would have to close the Combine Files dialog first, before closing the instance. I would appreciate this in a future update. Thanks a lot.

in : help --> settings --> F4-help we need to set the parameter "Display" to "Dialog(modal)

Setting the Dialog Modal

Hey guys,
I have a small problem here.
I have a frame with some buttons in it. On click of the buttons I get a dialog popped up.I have to make the dialog modal to the frame from which it has been popped up.
I have two Options here
1) I have to call the setModal function of the JDialog and make it modal.But this will fail when the user presses alt + tab. when this is done the frame and the dialog will not appear as a pair.
2) I have to pass the parent frame to the class which pops up the dialog and call the constructor ( JFrame frm, boolean true)
Is there any method other than the option 2 where the modal property can also be set and at the same time the dialog and the frame( owner ) appear in pair ????

A Dialog modal only to (a) specific InternalFrame

Is this (http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip89.html) really the only ( / easiest) way (in ... 1.5?) to make a ((J)OptionPane) (J)Dialog (or (J)InternalFrame, maybe later on...) "modal" only to it's (parent) (J)InternalFrame (semimodal?) ?
(I can't read most of the found forum threads ("Error: - Thread ... could not be loaded from the database. - Please try searching using our search facility", as if I wouldn't have just done that, and I can't seem to find the appropriate feedback function!). )

For no apparent reason at all, started only sending messages as text messages. If I tried to send a text as an iMessage, I would get a prompt with an option to send as a text message. I went to an Apple store and found out that somehow I'd been signed out of iMessages. Try this. Go to settings > messages, then make sure you're signed in. If that's the issue, and you log in with your Apple ID, it may take a few minutes to activate.

Set the dialog modal window width + height

hi ,
i tried to set the width+ height using
window.dialogWidth , innerWidth , Width that come from a java code
but without success.
only the dialogWidth seemed to change somthing but it wasn't
to the size that i passed , for value of 400 for example it changed
the width to almost all the screen.
Please advise .

GUI hangs after it fail to pop up a modal dialog

Hi everyone! I have a swing application that will pop up a log off confirm dialog (modal) when the user click on the "log off" button. It works fine for about 8 hours. Then when I click on the "log off" button, the dialog never pop up and the GUI is freezed, which means it does not react to user mouse click anymore, like a hidden modal dialog is in front. But actually there is no hidden dialog.
At the same time, my windows XP freeze also. I cannot even open a folder. Then I kill the winrunner, and the XP is able to open a folder, but my GUI is still freeze. No exception behind and all threads are running. I can use some test script to control the GUI, but somehow it just never react to user click.
Does anyone encounter the same problem and know the possible reason?

I have noteiced this as well in an application that I have created...however, my app doesn't freeze and the OS still runs (Win 2000). I suspect that your problem might be that you aren using the SwingUtilities.invokedLater() or SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait() methods to update your GUI. I am using them and still having some intermitten problems. Hope this helps you...if you have a solution for me, let me know.

now the modal shows up, change the field and click on save
click on ok (for the alert) and then click on Save invoice
you will remain on the same page
now click on annuleren
and then click on edit on the first line (200900017) again
then click on memo again, you will see the memo has not been changed

The issue is that creating a modal of a region lifts that region from the HTML. Just have a look at the DOM when you run your page and not the source html, because that does not reflect changes to the dom made on page load. This means that your memo-field is removed from the FORM-tags, and effectively won't submit to session state. The item is not processed when you submit the page! You can track that through debugging your page. Memo is not saved and not processed.
Trying to save the value to session state is not enough, it doesn't really matter in this case. The moment you submit the page, the session state will get overwritten by the submitted values of the items.
So what i did:

<li>use your templates better. Why would you wrap a region in div tags? Change or add a region template to be div tags. You can then easily assign a static id to this region, and target it. This will save you from wrapping wrapped wrappers (cause that is what the generated code looks like in the end).</li>

[JS] [CS3] UI Modal Dialog Layering

I have a dialog with a list of objects, sort of object manager, with a typical New/Edit/Delete set of buttons. I'm showing this dialog modally. Now, the New/Edit buttons are supposed to open modal edit dialogs on top of this window. And they apparently do, but some kind of a bug or lack of knowledge on my side makes this work not exactly right. The problem is layering.
Imagine this: I open a New/Edit dialog, then switch back to another application (which is something a user may do), and when I return back to my script, the editor is hidden behind the manager dialog, allowing me to click New/Edit buttons again.
Thus, I was even able to open several instances of editor dialogs, until I finally I added code to prevent this. But still the interface problem remains: the editor dialog floats under the manager window - and this is contrary to the UI convention of modal dialogs.
Is this something you guys are facing too? What am I doing wrong?

You will probably need to force your windows to a specific location on the screen to prevent overlap.

Focus Problem -- Two Non Modal Dialogs

Hi ,
In my applet, when user does something which is not allowed, I display an error message box (JOptionPane dialog - modal).
There is another dialog box (non modal) that user
can open to view search results and put it aside the
applet window to do some parallel work.
Now when error message dialog appears, the search
dialog box also pops up even if the user
has put this behind the applet window (by clicking browser window or applet, the search dialog goes behind the window).
Can you please let me know, how can I get rid
of this search dialog (non-modal) popup. I mean
search dialog should remain open but should not
come infront (ie should not get focus) when modal
error message dialog pops up.
NOTE: I don't want to make search dialog
a modal dialog.

Thanks for the reply michael. I forgot to mention particularly during my post that i am facing this problem on Solaris system. Running the same application on windows is working fine. I can't make other non-modal dialogs visibility to false because they should be visible on the screen all the time throught out the application life cycle and making it visible/non-visible doesn't get sense in my application. Does anybody is facing the same problem with Solaris system? Plz help.

yeah do a restriction and in the restriction screen fill in the variable to be restricted on and save and run query and this dialog screen will pop up

Why are my LabView Dialog Boxes no longer modal when using the Example LabVIEW Operator Interfaces?

I have a step in my sequence that pops up a modal LabVIEW dialog box. My LabVIEW vi uses the TestStand - Start Modal Dialog.vi and TestStand - Stop Modal Dialog.vi as described in the example and it works as advertised when I'm using the TestStand Development environment however when I use the sample Operator Interfaces distributed with TestStand the Dialog boxes lose focus. I have the VI Properties->Window Appearance set to Dialog and have followed all of the instructions I could find for making a dialog modal. I've also reviewed all the documentation I could get my hands on including previous posts on this board and didn't see anything obvious.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I may be missing? Has anyone else experienced this problem and come up with the solution?
I am using LabVIEW 8.0 along with TestStand 3.5.

Running the example modal dialog in the teststand3.5 examples folder and using labVIEW8.0, I notice that when the Dialog is displayed its not active, but it is modal to the OI. Clicking on the Dialog panel makes it active. If you try to click on the OI panel behind, you can not. Is this what you are seeing?
I am using the Full labVIEW IO as supplied with TestStand and the example VI in the modal dialog folder is as supplied.
The LabVIEW Adapter is still configured to use the active labVIEW developement environment.
If I run the same example, only this time using LabVIEW7.1, the Dialog panel is active.
There is a patch to take it to labVIEW8.01, at this moment in time I am not sure what the update fixes.
There does seem to be a problem with TestStand3.5 (engine) and LabVIEW 8.0.

Jquery Modal Dialog - passing item values

I know...there are a lot of information about how to implement modal dialog form.....but I cannot find an answer on how to deal with my situation.
What I am trying to achieve is to create a form in apex page, assign items to this form , add Jquery script to the page header where I am going to call this form into modal dialog ..... fill out items in modal dialog and when click on "Create" - insert value of the items into my table.
Yes, this is common thing to do (like here http://shijesh.wordpress.com/2010/04/10/jquery-modal-form-in-apex-4 )....but I am trying to find a way where I don't need to create function for my "Crete" button which will call OnDemand Process. Anyways, here is what and how I am trying to do this and please correct me where I am wrong.

So, and here is my question. I don't want to use any OnDemand Process, I would like dialog window to pass values to my regular procedure in my page. If you click on Open Modal, it will open my form in modal dialog window, on create it will send "CREATE" request to my procedure which will insert data into table....but it unfortunately it will insert only NULLS into my table (only ID column will have data as it has trigger/sequence). So, click Create and then refresh the page.

Can the File.browseForDirectory dialog be made modal?

This dialog is non-modal, inconsistent with the modal dialog launched with File.browseForOpenMultiple. Our application presents both options, the ability to select files (browseForOpenMultiple) and a folder (browseForDirectory). The non-modality of the directory choice dialog presents a number of problems:
First, while the directory browser dialog is displayed, it's possible to reselect file/folder browse options to launch a second dialog. This results in an exception.
Second, our app can simulate a modal directory browser dialog by disabling the app window (addresses the first problem), but then the directory browser dialog can be lost behind another window, presenting the user with a mysteriously unresponsive application.
Is it possible to make the browseForDirectory dialog modal?

I don't know if you can turn the dialog off, but the fact that it is happening at all is flagging that something bad happened in the previous build. The only time the recovery dialog comes up is if LV crashes and leaves VIs is an uncertain state.
