Did I brick my USB drive?

In Windows I unplugged my USB stick without unmounting, even though it has non-backed-up important information on it (in other words: I'm stupid, please save me from myself).  Now I can't seem to get any system to detect it.  When I plug it in on Arch I get the following in dmesg:

Does anyone have a way I can recover at least some of my data?
Thank you so much for any help.

If it worked on all your machines and now doesn't work on any then it's probably a hardware or firmware failure. And it's not like "only" your files are corrupted and can be partially recovered; it seems that the device can't even finish registering with the USB bus. I think it may be screwed up for good.

Do you have old kernel logs? Did the same messages appear in the past?
This 255 here is very suspicious. It suggests that the stick may have been in the process of overwriting some internal configuration data and it just managed to erase the flash memory holding them, but didn't finish programming it with new values. Now all bits read as 1, which confuses the device and/or USB host so badly that they can't talk to each other.
If this is the case, the only hope is in accessing the flash memory directly using some other controller and either guessing what has been overwritten and fixing it or trying to rescue data from the raw flash. It's not exactly easy, I have never done that and I wouldn't even know where to start without having the stick in my hands, but there are data recovery companies that may be able to help for some (likely serious) $$.

  • Global reset of file / folder permissions on a USB Drive

I just migrated to a new MB Pro. I now have an issue with file permissions on my USB drive that I use for Time Machine and some other external data. I understand (sort of) why the permissions are messed up, because you're forced to come up with a new user name when you migrate your data and applications. That being said, I just want to globally reset / update the permissions on my USB drive and it's data so that I'm the owner; and I can read and write. And I want to save all my data.
I've started this process going from the "get information" screen, so I think I know how. But it's been running forever. Isn't there some type of universal setting for a drive or does it just need to crunch thru every single file and directory?

Whatever you've done already it's the wrong thing to do. You cannot arbitrarily change permissions on every file on your backup using the Get Info window. The result will be a complete screwup of all the file permissions on your backup. You will manage to make a simple problem into an unsolvable one.
Next time you should ask first before you act rather than after when you cannot go back. Since you did this to your TM backup drive about all you can do at this point is erase the drive and start your TM backups from scratch. Of course this doesn't resolve anything for whatever you tried to migrate to your new computer.
If you migrated your old Home folder to the new computer then first be sure the account has admin status, then log into the account. You should then have full access to all your restored files. You can then delete the other user account.

  • How to stop importing from usb drive going into root ITMS directory

First time I imported, everything was fine. I was trying to get rid of some duplicates and got rid of one of the main subdirectories (I had "Itunes Music" folder with two main subdirectories, let's call them "Laptop" and "Desktop." I noticed I had many duplicate artists from these, so I deleted the "Laptop" directory. Naturally, all these showed up with asterisks on iTunes. With no easy way to delete them all (can't sort based on asterisk, apparently), I removed EVERYTHING from my Library and attempted to copy over from the USB drive again. This time, the contents of "Laptop" went into the root "iTunes Music" folder (so there were now ~50+ folders including the "Desktop."
This isn't working for me, since my objective is to get rid of the duplicate work (duplicate tracks I can somewhat stomach, but I also have some duplicate "Artists" which is driving me crazy). I removed everything from the library, deleting it all (~30+GB) and deleted all of the subdirectories from the iTunes Music folder.
When I went to reimport it all again. I dragged the "Laptop" folder from Finder on the USB drive into the iTunes Music directory again (as I did the first time), recreated the and everything continues to populate the top iTunes music folder. Is there any way to stop this? I want the "Laptop" folder to stay in it's subdirectory structure distinct and separate from the "Desktop" folder so I can ensure I am not unnecessarily increasing my structure.
One easy (though extremely tedious) alternative could be to import the folders one at a time... but I'd really like to avoid that. But for my first mistake, this wouldn't have been an issue. I haven't changed any settings on iTunes, so please advise!

I have duplicate (different) stuff on the laptop versus desktop but some unique to each (and all kinda scrambled up). I first started importing on my old G3 ibook. It was slower and chugged harder and some are at really low bitrate, for example, and also lack album art. My XP desktop was made for gaming and is much more powerful, so I always did high bitrate and was much more careful to do all the album art, etc.
Now I'm trying to consolidate it all on my new MBP... Mostly, though, it's a mess and I've been putting this off for years and it's mostly my fault. My biggest gripe is the large number of duplicate tracks. I can live with these when they're from different albums (compilations mostly), but not when one is a lower bit. I imagine I'm gonna be doing it the hard way, one album/artist at a time...

  • USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

    Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

  • USB Drive not showing up at all, not appearing in disk utility either

Hi, I am having a problem getting my USB drives to show up at all, namely my iPhone. When I plug my iPhone in, iTunes recongizes it, but I am unable to get it to appear in Finder, Desktop, or Disk Utility. I tried it on a Windows PC and it works perfectly fine. I am also having issues with USB thumb drives. However, my western digital external HD works fine.
Very strange problem, anyone have any solutions?

    Now don't do that.
My only other thoughts on this was that there is something wrong with the cable or jack in your macbook.  You said the iphone mounted in a windows pc.  So it looks like the cable is ok.  That may mean the jack has problems.  On the other hand you also say plugging in the WD external works through that jack.  So the cable and jack look ok.  So much for that thought.
I also would suggest a pram reset but I doubt that would have any affect.  Or is that why you did when you said you "flashed" pram?

  • How to change mount options on an install usb drive ?

    Situation:
    I did create an USB drive with three bootable partitions;
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Yosemite”, created with the ‘createinstallmedia’ command
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Mavericks”, created with the ‘createinstallmedia’ command
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Mountain Lion”, created by restoring the /Install OS X Mountain Lion.app/Contents/Shared Support/InstallESD.dmg image within the 10.8 Installer app
Everything works fine, and I can select any of the three boot volumes in order to boot and install a computer with 10.8, 10.9 or 10.10.
    Here are my two questions:
    1. When booting with the Startup Manager, I can see the three boot volumes on the USB stick listed as startup options. When the first two are named “Install Yosemite” or “Install Mavericks”, the Mountain Lion one appears as “Mac OSX”. Is there a way to change this value / string ?
NB: renaming the Mountain Lion volume on the USB drive using the Finder was done, but does not change in the way the volume appears in the Startup Manager
    2. When connecting the USB drive to a running OS X system, all volumes mount well, but the Mountain Lion one automatically opens a Finder window. Is there a way to change this behaviour, having the volume mounted, but preventing this Finder window to automatically open ?
Read about the 'bless' command, but I am not sure this could solve the issue, as my Install Mountain Lion drive is already bootable and working ...

I haven't had chance to test but bless looks promising…

  • Unable to Load USB Driver in LV for Total Phase's Aardvark I2C adaptor

I have tried to instal Total Phase's Aardvark I2C USB driver for LabVIEW on two computers and two versions of LV (8.5 and 7.1) without success. The Windows driver seems to be working fine as their command center gui terminal-esque program works without a hitch, but the LV DLL doesn't seem to work.
Attached is the very simple vi to find connected Aardvark USB devices (aa_find_devices). It always returns the same error code, 8002, which resolves to:
    AA_UNABLE_TO_LOAD_DRIVER
    -2
    unable to load USB driver
    From their documentation: http://www.totalphase.com/docs/aardvark_datasheet/sect005/#s5.9
This looks like perhaps the LabVIEW DL, "aardvark.dll" maybe having a versioning issue. So my question is this: Using LabVIEW, how does one debug dll dependencies and resolve issues like this? Do I need the source code for the lib?
     Cheers,

    Dear Joe,
Let me start off by apologizing for the inconvenience you
have gone through.  I am an engineer at Total Phase.  We are
working on fixing this issue for our next release of the
Aardvark LabVIEW Driver.  This forum post was only brought
to our attention today.  In the future, you can also let
Total Phase know about these kinds of issues by emailing
[email protected]  We are very responsive through
    email or phone.
The problem you are experiencing has to do with versioning
issues between our DLL and USB driver.  Specifically, DLLs
before v5.xx must use the older version of our USB driver.
By replacing the DLL from our latest version of Control
Center, you have effectively upgraded the DLL that the
LabVIEW driver is using and made it compatible with v2.xx of
    the USB driver.
The most likely reason that smercurio_fc did not see a
difference between the DLL in Aardvark Control Center and
the LabVIEW driver is because he is using an older version
of Control Center and correspondingly an older version of
    the USB driver.
The reason that we have not packaged the LabVIEW driver with
latest DLL is due to the fact that a few functions have
changed their function prototypes (for example aa_open_ext
and aa_spi_write), and the VIs have not yet been updated
accordingly.  Although updating the DLL solved your USB
driver issue, it introduced this new issue.  If you try to
use these certain VIs, LabVIEW will error out.
We are currently working on updating the LabVIEW drivers to
work cohesively with the new DLL and USB driver, and this
should be available soon.  If you need immediate
availability to the functions with new prototypes you will
have to change it manually.  The other recommended option is
to simply revert back to the DLL that is packaged with our
LabVIEW driver and downgrade the USB driver back to v1.xx.
I will make sure to post again once the update is released,
and I once again apologize for the inconvenience.
    Best regards,
    Etai

  • How can I move my ITunes library (on MAC) to a USB Drive? I have around 22GB in the library.

I have around 22GB of music in my ITunes library on my MAC and would love to be able to transfer it to a USB drive. I tried to transfer it to a 32GB drive and I receive a notice stating that the drive is too small. Why is that? Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

As for space, what and how were you trying to move?  If you used this drive before, did you empty the trash when it was connected?
A 32GB drive?  Sounds like a flash drive to me.  I don't know I'd trust one of those, and certainly not without regular backups.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Can't access the Time Capsule Drive and attached USB drive

I bought the 3 TB Time capsule a couple of months ago.  I am using it as my wireless router for a cable modem and have attached a USB drive (seagate) to the TC.  I use the TC drive for time machine only.  It worked well at first, for about the first month.   Now I have trouble accessing the TC drive as well as the USB drive.  The router function works perfectly fine.  The drives show up in the Finder under Shared but  cannot connect.  Time machine does not back up because it says the back up drive is not available.  In disc utility, the base station shows with the correct name, but I can't access it. It asks for a pasword but does not respond, so I cannot reboot it from my computer.
If I restart the TC (power off and on), it works fine, I can access both drives.  However, this problem recurs, sometimes within a few days.  I have also noticed, which may be related, that when I enter time machine (when everything is working fine), some of the back-ups are blank.  There is a date and time but no actual back-up.  Not sure if this is related.
I'm runing Mavericks 10.9.2 on an older MacBook, 15" late 2008 with 2.4 ghz dual core.

    Hi Bob,
I updated Mavericks but still had the same problem, so I did a hard reset on TC, although I held the button for over 5 seconds and the amber light was flashing rapidly, it acted like a soft reset.  Still no change so I rebooted my laptop.   Still had an excellent internet connection but in AirPort utility, the TC is grayed out and says device not found.  Light on TC was amber.  So, I tried a hard reset again, but the light wouldn't flash at all.  Unplugged it and after pluggin back in, acted like a hard reset.  I restored previous settings and it is fine for the moment.  Will keep you posted if it recurs.  Hopefully it will not with updated Mavericks, but I get the feeling the problem may be the TC.

  • I would like to recover my bookmarks from my old hard drive that I now have as an external USB drive. The old OS was Vista; the new is Windows 7.

I recently had a new hard drive installed on my laptop; this hard drive has the Windows 7 OS on it.
At the same time, I had my old hard drive mounted in an SATB enclosure so that I could use it as an external USB drive. [I stupidly did not export my bookmarks before doing all of this]
Everything seems to work fine [I can see all of the files], but I cannot find out where my bookmarks are stored on the old hard drive.
Is it possible to find them and get them transferred over to the new hard drive??
    Thanks!!

Bookmarks are stored in a file called places.sqlite inside the profile folder. You can copy that file from the old profile folder into your current profile folder. For details of how to find the profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles or http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
You can recover more than just the bookmarks - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile

  • Bootcamp Blue Screen of Death.. Apple USB Driver ?

This started to occur to me after I upgraded to the Leopard
    drivers for Bootcamp.
I have seen this occur two times while booted in Windows XP.
Both after I left the machine idle for a long period of time..
    about 3-4 hrs.
    1) Conditions - machine is idle.. the screen energy saver is on
and the monitor is in low power/sleep mode.
    2) Conditions - both times occured when i had no internet access
connected. It occured when I took my imac to a location where
i dont have the wifi access as usual at my home.
    3) Conditions - i did have the trial of Parallels 3.0 installed
but i dont use it nor did i purchase the full version.. i need
to uninstall those components from XP still.
    4) I think in both instances Autodesk Inventor 11 was running.
The 2nd time it was, i dont remember the first time this crash happened.
I have installed all the latest service packs of this software on
    the system.
    5) Windows XP SP2, FAT32 partition, 32 GB on my iMac harddisk.
    6) Error - Windows Blue Screen of Death... i caught it only momentarily
as the machine goes into automatic reboot. I did catch USB DRIVER
    in the most recent crash.
    7) Error - Upon reboot, the machine asks to send the error report
to Micosoft. I cant because I dont have an internet access. It did
say that Windows rebooted due to a serious error and asked to send
    the info back to MS.
    8) Error - i was able to screen shot a bit of the error report
but i cant attach a jpeg of the window to this post unfortunately.
Any insight would be appreciated on this.
    Edgar

okay.. i have recreated this hard crash for a third time:
it is definitely the USB Drivers used... blue screen of death states:

    other notes:
i had no other applications running when the system crashed this third time.

  • Apple mobile device USB driver is missing and cannot be installed

    Hi,
My iPod nano (6th gen) is not recognised by iTunes but is recognised by Windows sometimes (once in 2-3 attempts).
Every time I connect my iPod to my laptop, a window pops up saying "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...".
I looked through apple support page and narrowed down the cause to the driver.
Apple mobile device USB driver does not show up in Device Manager.
However iPod does show up under Portable Devices as a camera when iPod is recognised by Windows.
I tried reinstalling Apple Mobile Device USB Driver as it was shown in the support page (right click on iPod in Device Manager>update driver software>...).
This did not work (gave me an error saying "the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device...".
So I tried another method I found online; extract iTunes installer (itunes6464setup.exe), extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi in it, and use the files in it to update driver.
This gave me the same error.
It seems that a Windows driver is installed for my iPod (WPD FileSystem Volume Driver); when I opt for "search automatically" in Uptade driver software, this driver shows up with the message "the best driver for your device is already installed".
Also, my iPod is shown in Devices and Printers with an exclamation mark (when I connect my iPod to my laptop, the exclamation mark shows up only after I click OK on the message window "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...")
Troubleshoot showed "Windows is uninstalling this device (Code 21)".
I'd appreciate it if someone could help with the situation.
I'm using Windows 8.1, iTunes 12.1 for Windows 64bit, and iPod nano 6th gen.
I haven't connected my iPod to my laptop for a long while, but I recall connecting an iPhone to my laptop a while ago and it was recognised just fine.
After that I updated my Windows from 8 to 8.1, but I don't think it has anything to do with the problem as my iPod wasn't recognised by iTunes before and after the update.
    Thank you in advance!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases. Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

  • Can't access a USB Drive connected to Time Capsule from a Windows PC.  Apple Care can't/won't assist.  HELP!!!

Trying to get my Windows 7 PC to access the USB Drive that is connected to my Time Capsule.  I have a Fat32 Formatted USB drive connected to a 2TB Time Capsule and I'm trying to get access to that drive from a Windows 7 PC.  I've attempted to map the network drive (based on some 3-4 year old articles I could find online) but any time I access a file from the PC, the Time Capsule "freaks out" and disconnects all connections to it which forces me to unplug it to restart the Tim Capsule.  I'm at a loss now as to what to do.
Spent a few hours talking to Apple about this and much more.  Apple Care can't or won't help with this particular problem (the guy I talked to, as nice and helpful as he wanted to be, had no experience supporting their hardware in a Windows environment).
Someone has to know how to fix this so, PLEASE, help if you can!

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
    Good luck.

  • USB drive connected to airport i cant see it??

Hello all, i have an airport extreme. network is all setup fine. I have a USB drive connected to the airport setup for timemachine backups. What i would do is turn it on every week for the day and all my mac would backup to it. Last night i turn it on for my backups and none of my macs seems to be able to find it. Well today right out of the blue the imac suddenly sees it and runs a backup. But i cant see it with the macbook pro. I double checked the setting on the airport and dont see anything out of place. I can however see the drive in finder but when i click on it system tells me it cant connect. Any suggestions?

it's not new. this information has been available for some time.
    Now this worked perfectly
it did (and does) so for many users. it just means is that, if you run into problems (as you do now), there will be no support from Apple.
I now have to physically connect my usb drive to each of my computers to have them back up?
