Did I have a kernal panic?

While moving some jpeg files from one folder to another my screen had a kind of screen roll down from the top that darkened it but was transparent. A message came up in a dark box in English & 2 other languages. It said I must force a restart or shut down. I did that & all seems OK for now. I've had this happen once or twice before but that was quite a while back. Any ideas for me?
Thanks,
Harris

I have a 20" G5 with iSight and now have a Kernal Panic. I'm backing up all of my data and think that reinstalling the OS may take care of my problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea where my original OS install disk is. Any idea how I can get a new one?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.

  • Why did I have a kernel panic?

I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.

Perhaps try it again and see if it was just a bad alignment of the planets last time. You could also post more of the log to see which thread it was that actually crashed and what was happening. In the meantime this will keep you busy:

  • Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive

    Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    Hi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

  • Does Installing Windows XP stop Kernal Panics?

i just baught a MBP 2.0 15 inch last week and had to send it in for repairs because of constant Kernal panics about ever 5-10 minutes after browsing the web using safari. The panics only occured after i started using wireless. I used the computer for about 20 hours, doing everything with it, before even connecting and it worked fine. I called apple and he told me to reinstall OSX, so i did, first an archive and install, next a complete erase and install. this did not work, as the problem persisted. Keep in mind that unlike many uses who have gotten kernal panics in login and startup screen, i have only gotten them when browsing on safari, and connecting through ituness, all wireless. Apple finally told me to send it in for repair. After reading extensivly on here, ive heard so many horror stories of people getting new mbp's and still having problems. I was just wondering it getting it repaired was a better choice, and if anyone will think they can acctually fix this problem. Let me know what u think about my issues. thanks
    -Ben

Yes!! They are amazing. I had the same problem and they replaced my entire logic board so fast it made my head spin. The problem is now history and I'm a happy man. Nobody likes the hassle sending back a computer, but it is sometimes the only fix. A new logic board solved by problems. Let me say that a week later my battery died. They replaced that pronto, as well. I'm a bit of a sucker for trying the the "first" of any new product line, but I will admit that Apple has gone beyond the normal standard of customer support in fixing it. Give them a call and chill.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 2,3Ghz - Random Kernal Panics

Have random kernal panics on my MacBook Pro.. Often when useing more more than one app but it still happens randomly tho.
Have tried different harddrives, re-installed mavericks, memtest on bootable cd for 12h, smc fancontrol with higher rpm settings.
Original ram. Not that high temps.
Anyone have an idea what the issue could be?
    Sorry for my english. Thnx.

  • G4 powerbook - Kernal Panic Help please...

    Hi
It would seem reading through the posts that I have a Kernal Panic as my powerbook is showing all the signs of this problem.
I usually only use my powerbook for working, incase anything like this ever happens, but I was browsing through the games and screensavers on mac downloads and I downloaded Ifish screensaver which required something called GROWL and a widget game called MACPINBALL which also required a download and a restart straight after installation, subsequently the Panic problem started.
The Mac will not boot up for very long but I managed to trash the games and the growl application, however I think that maybe the MACPINBALL widget installed something that may be causing the problem, any ideas what this could be?
I am away from home visiting family at the moment so I do not have my Apple install disks but I really need the laptop to be working so can anyone offer me any advice? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks in advance, god I wish I hadn't installed those bloomin stupid app's.

    Hi There
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
No I do not have any external devices attached and I have managed to get into disk utility to repair the permissions, since doing this I have restarted in safe mode and It woked ok without getting the restart message for approx 15 mins. I then restarted it normally and I got the restart message straight away, I restarted and then it didnt even boot, it just made a loud and worrying whirring noise, so I have turned it off!
any more questions then please get straight back to me. Thanks!

  • I am having kernal panic problems.

I have had Kernal Panic problems over time.
It happened when I was running Second Life in my 4GB MacBook Pro.
Yesterday I had 8 GB installed (Kensington) and it has Panicked twice.
Here are my Panic Notes.  Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?
    Thank you,
    Leigh Zeitz

  • Kernal panic with OS X update

Hi all, I have a kernal panic on my MBP and have tried several things to fix it without success.
I was updating to OS X 10.5.8 via download, and after I restarted my computer as instructed, the computer shut down at approx 75% of installation. Since then I have been getting the kernal panic message with every restart. The issue continues even in Safe Mode.
The kernal panic is as follows:
panic(cpu 0 caller0x001AC125): Version mismatch between Kernel and CPU PM"!/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.15.4/osfmk/i386.pmCPU.c:651
    Debugger called: <panic>
    further down it says:
    Mac OS version:
    Not yet set
1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM (installed after market, but several years ago)
available: 6.51 GB total: 74.21 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
I tried to Archive and re-install OS X but don't have enough available memory. I can't erase and re-install at this point unless I absolutely have to.
I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point. Any help would be great.

This can be caused by having a dysfunctional system prior to updating. The usual solution is to reinstall OS X. If you haven't enough disk space to do an Archive and Install, then you have the added problem of not having sufficient free space for OS X. I would suggest you get an external hard drive on which you can backup your files. Get a larger hard drive for your omputer or look for ways to store more of your personal data on an external drive in order to free up space on the hard drive. Then erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X.

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
    An internal hardware fault
An obscure bug in OS X
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it as directed in this support article.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • 3 short tones, 3 long tones, 3 short tones after Kernal Panic

My iMac 20" early 2009 stop working after 10 days. I have a Kernal Panic and when I reboot the iMac it begin to do 3 short tones, 3 long tones, 3 short tones (SOS). Nothing on the screen. Somebody know the meaning of the SOS?

    Hi Richard
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
That should not happen to a new iMac and you do have 14 days to return or request a replacement machine no questions asked.
On the other hand if you have installed new ram, it may not be fully seated in the slots or is incompatible with your system. If your sure you have the correct ram, then try reseating it by pushing real hard on each module with both thumbs.
If not, then again without hesitation take it back to where you purchased it...
    Dennis

  • Kernal Panic, AHHH!!!!

Hello, my laptop just displayed the great: You need to restart your computer thing, and i looked it up and i have a kernal panic! (yaaaa..lol) but anyway, here is what the log said, and hope fully u can tell me what is wrong/what to do, it is a iBook G4, 512 RAM, 20GB HD, MAC OS X 10.3.9, 1.07 GHZ PPC Processor, i tried posting what the log said, and it only gave me, like have the info, so what do u do with a kernal panic, or do i have to find a way to post the info, cuz its my bro's laptop, and i copied it into textedit, then transfered it via flash drive to my lappy, so that may have something to do with it.

kernel panic can be caused by anyhting - corrupted software,
bad RAM, hard drive failing or logic board problems.

  • Stalls and kernal panics

The only discs I got with my computer was the os9 install disk. Were can I get one or get a disc image to make one? Apple has never published the AHT discs for download, as they are hardware-specific to each particular model and really don't want them distributed freely. You might see if there's a MUG (Mac Users Group) anywhere in your area and contact them to enlist some help on that front. Or take it to an Apple repair shop for a diagnosis.
I'm not good at reading logs, but I have a good idea on the first and last entries you posted. The first referenced a dependency to the USB drivers; the last one was the video card or drivers.
I'd pull all your peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse and do an Open Firmware reset. To boot into Open Firmware, restart and hold down the Command-Option-O-F keys until you get to the OF screen. At the prompt enter the following, pressing enter for each line:
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
    reboot
Run for a while and see if you still get the hangs and KP's. You can also sometime eradicate the KP's with an Archive and Install of the OS, but I'd try isolating down to your hardware config first.

  • Kernal Panic after failed 10.5.8 update. Think I have made things worse!

My daughter clicked the update button without thinking when notified of a 10.5.8 update. 2 hours later the Macbook Intel 12" was still spinning. She cancelled the update, waited for it to close down and went to bed. Next morning Kernal Panic. I have scanned the discussion pages and carried out all suggestions, reset PRAM, single user mode etc but to no effect.
Originally a second hand purchase about 2 years ago, we dont have the original Leopard installation discs nor some of the apps that came with it (CS3), but have plenty of Time Machine backups on an Iomega firewire drive.
So I used my 10.5 MacBook Pro discs and got the Disk Utility going. No disc faults and drive was SMART Verified. Hundreds of permission repairs and still Kernal Panic on restart. Using same discs I tried to Restore system from backup but drive not visible. Using Disk Utility I tried to restore using the manual option and it allowed me to drag the Backupdb file to the source drive. Being thorough I asked it to Erase and Restore.
After 15 min it had read the files, after another 14 it had verified them, then the message Operation Timed Out, could not complete. Now I have a completely wiped MacBook Drive and no way of restoring the data.
Have checked with local Apple dealer, Leopard 10.5 is no longer marketed and Snow Leopard 10.6 will not allow me to restore an earlier System. He suggested I bought a 2nd hand copy off ebay! This sounds like possibly adding to my problems.
Q1 : Can I use Snow Leopard to restore an earlier system from Time Machine on a wiped drive?
Q2 : Can I use a previously registered copy of Leopard legally if original machine scrapped.
Q3 : Could a third party repairer install a copy of 10.5.6 long enough for me to carry out a System Restore from the Time Machine backup.
Q4 : Have I completely wrecked this mac and should I start from scatch with Snow Leopard?
Any suggestions gratefully received. I am afraid to do anything else in case I make recovery even more difficult. Thanks in advance.

Had I read of your suggestion before I stupidly wiped the drive I would most certainly have given it a try. It would be my first action if i am ever in this situation again. As it is I have managed to find a resolution myself which i include here for any other folk unfortunate enought to find them selves in a similar position.
My frustration at this problem was made greater by being outbid at the last minute on a copy of Leopard on Ebay. I would never normally buy second hand software and find it incredible that Apple do not continue to sell the original product. If they dropped the price by 20% on recently updated system software they would still have plenty of customers, either in my position or 10.4 non intel users wanting to get up to date.
Anyway in a more considered moment I bought a copy of Snow Leopard on the basis that it is an upgrade to 10.5 not a complete rebuild. Sure enough after chosing the language I had the option of the Utilities menu and the Restore System From Backup option recognised the various Time Machine backups on the firewire drive. 1 hour later it was identical to the pre kernal panic episode.
Suffice to say Software Update had now been deactivated on all my Macs.
